I am positive that I am not alone in re-evaluating my dreams - of examining them to make sure they align with your core values

Other times well you just know that what you are doing does have value and meaning for others

It is those times that we small business owners and every human being out there lives for

I have been utterly blessed

11 years ago I had a dream of creating a clearinghouse of information for riders - a place that would help them make the most of their riding season to feel connected as brothers and sisters of the family ldquoWindrdquo and to get the support and help they needed to live their dreams

I am so humbled by the team that has gathered around me - those whose ideologies dreams and needs seem to be parallel to mine

There is Ali - the amazing woman who waltzed into my life to save my web site from an unscrupulous web designer and who has grown and learned and become one fabulous web designer not to mention a valued friend

Alirsquos hubby Don who pitches in with Data Entry and Calendar management

And Darryl the American rider who has been helping us with layout for the past two years

We now add Brent Schultz also from Ladysmith BC to our web development team and he is already proving himself to be a valuable asset

Stephanie Arnold-Coffin has begun helping me out with administrationand how much help that has been I can not begin to tell you

Without these people I could not do what I do I could not be living the dream I doAnd all of the above people know that I am

rooting for them in their dreams and as long as our dreams remain parallel - well - then we are all working for what we want out of our lives - our own dreams

Then there are the people of the community - the volunteer reporters the people who share what is happening in their lives their communities and help us feel connected to each other

This is our Anniversary - our Birthday if you will - and it is going to be an amazing year filled with giving and sharing and riding and I canrsquot wait to take you all on this journey with me - the meet you hug you share the highway share your communities and a bit of our souls with each other

11 yearsthat have been filled with good times bad times and in between times11 years - none of which could have happened without you

Itrsquos a party and you are all invited

The very first contest involves my ldquoPublic Personrdquo page I have a lot of people asking to be my friend on Facebook and my personal Belt Drive Betty page is at the limit of 5000 So the new Belt Drive Betty ldquoPublic Personrdquo page was created to make it so I can connect with as many people as possible I had set it up months ago but ndash never published it ndash OOPS

Itrsquos published now and I am asking that those of you who would like to please like that page and once you do you can take part in this simple contest

Way back before he and I had kind of lost touch with each other Larry used to send me some of his poetry to share with those who read the Busted Knuckle Chronicles

Well life happened time passed and one day out of the blue Larry was back in my lifeItrsquos funny how bad pennies and friends do thatin and out of your life and you pick up where you left off without missing hardly a beat

Larry sent me his book ldquoAsphalt Rangerdquo to review and one as a gift for our Beat the PMS Blues Online Show lsquonrsquo Shine as a prize

For a long time Larry - the ldquoIronhorse Writerrdquo dreamt of having a book of his American free verse rider poetry published

Well his dream has come true

He has this book that is about 170 pages long Itrsquos filled with poetry from as far back as 1998 Itrsquos written in chapters and every chapterrsquos name makes you think of the different stages in life our interests and how they change over time The one constant through it all the love of the open road and the wisdom it has to share with each of us

ldquoWith the CD version (entirely recorded by Larry) once you get through the credits for the publishing house it was pleasant to listen to as it truly carried the cadence each poem carriedrdquo

To read his poetry on onersquos own (without benefit of the CD) well that is a whole different experiencehis poems hold the rhythm of life of the road in them and your soul really identifies that

They are poems filled with tidbits and pearls of wisdom and whimsy

I found some of his poems profoundly moving

For me ldquoBasically Blackrdquo was such a poem Itrsquos simple and honest clarity speaks straight to your heart

Another poem that I found particularly poignant - one that moved me deeply was ldquoBrotherhoodrdquo

His depiction of two old soldiers old road warriors one dead the other left behind and a lifetime of memories shared in only a few linesthe ending of that poem had a lump in my throat and a tear in my eyes

Poem after poem he takes you on a ride - and you know this man has ridden all of his life has felt experienced tasted - become - the rhythm of the road

The ldquoAsphalt Rangerdquo by Laurence P Scerri published by Flash Productions is a book that I think many a ride will appreciate Itrsquos honestjust like the road

My hats off to you brother of the family Windyou are living that dream

Recently Irsquove been given a very good reason to think about what I would take and why if I were to take a trip abroad to do a motorcycle touring package the specifics will come out later but Irsquove done some pretty hard

thinking about it

You figure 2 weeks one rider per bike and Irsquom figuring on only being able to count on panniersidebags and maybe a top bag to haul everything I needhellip overseas in a strange land where I might not be able to get my favorite things This by the way is a thing which makes me really happy I quit smoking because taking enough Canadian smokes for that long might have forced me to leave the extra undies out

Planning to do something like that takes forethought and consideration and maybe a bit of sacrifice it wouldnrsquot be like a regular vacation where you can haul six suitcases and every comfort of home the concept here is minimalist focusing on comfort and rideability The plan Irsquom going with is bed and breakfast style vacationing so camping gear wonrsquot be an issue and Irsquom sure that I can find a spot to do a bit of laundering here and there so that should simplify things

Naturally the very first step is to ensure that you have the proper documentation and appropriateIrsquod plan personally 3 changes of clothes

from the skin out and I never travel without a few extra socks and undergarments so those would probably sneak in Toiletries of course and if you have prescription medications itrsquos best to take all you need and a couple of days extra traveling with TOO many extra meds will be frowned on however Waterproof tough containers required too

When you travel abroad if yoursquore booking with a tour company yoursquoll need to make the decision whether you want to pay to haul your own riding gear over or take the chance with rental gear and herersquos where Irsquom personally torn I love my gear but I have different gear for different riding too I canrsquot take it ALL nor would I expect to

So I can rent gear appropriate to the location riding weather and safety laws trusting the local experts to help outfit me and somehow that seems like a smarter option I can take key stuff (my VEST good gravy I canrsquot go moto-touring in some strange land without THAT) but the bulky things might have to stay back So of course now I get concerned about a helmet Theyrsquore so personal do I really want to wear a helmet that uncounted others have been in control of I know that the tourism company will make sure theyrsquore completely sanitary and clean but my worry centers more about safety what if the guy three rentals ago dropped the helmet but no visible damage occurred How often are they replaced Questions that need to be asked I guess but in the end yoursquore going to have to decide if the comfort of your very own lid is worth the cost of transporting it over In all honesty I havenrsquot decided yet but I have some

After that you have to consider the tourist gear cameras computertablet devices cellular communications (Europe especially is pretty much light years ahead of North America in this if you have a phone that takes a SIM card yoursquore pretty much good to go with pay as you use type service) and the appropriate power adapters for all of these devices as well because North America is pretty much unique in our power outlets If you have electric heat

riding gear and hope to use it yoursquoll need to talk to your tour provider about what kind of power options are available on their bikes and ensure that itrsquos compatible (fortunately most motorcycles run the same 12volt negative ground type systems but best to be sure)

All that being said donrsquot over pack Most simple things like toothbrushes and toothpaste can be found nearly everywhere so extras arenrsquot necessary If yoursquore riding in a foreign land yoursquore hopefully going to spend some time looking at whatrsquos around you so a set of shoes good for walking will be essential if yoursquore like me your riding footwear at home is both waterproof and comfortable so maybe yoursquod consider taking that I will be therersquos not a chance Irsquom putting feet into rental boots a less than pleasant past experience with borrowed footwear made sure Irsquoll never try that ever again Not only that I happen to feel that those boots with the carbon fibrecomposite shanks and protective toe caps are not only safe theyrsquore super comfortable to ride AND walk in and theyrsquoll serve me better than any other shoe out there I think gloves might be the same I want to try them out here at home before counting on them for warmth and dryness across the pond and theyrsquore small and light

Rain gear Irsquoll rent it not only do I not care to haul mine on an airplane itrsquos not the best part of my riding gear so Irsquoll go with what the locals recommend That also saves me about fifteen or twenty pounds of leather Irsquod love to haul my leathers but theyrsquore not going to be the most practical for the style of riding Irsquom contemplating Irsquoll probably even go for one of those fancy armored all-weather riding rigs because Irsquom one of those that believes that if yoursquore warm and dry yoursquore safer as a rider than if yoursquore cold andor wet

And lastly A good riding partner The trip that is being considered wonrsquot actually include my wife as much as Irsquod love to share it with her (Shersquoll probably go to Hawaii I donrsquot think shersquos going to cry) I have some good friends that Irsquod love to share a trip like this with but I think yoursquoll agree (when you find out later) that the riding buddy on this trip is not only solid but a quality rider and entertaining as hell After a long rainy day in the saddle when yoursquore trying to warm up and relax over a hot meal and a brew you need someone who will laugh at things with you when you need it and make you laugh off the others when you canrsquot get it going by yourselfand Irsquoll have thatMore on this will come out as the plans solidify but trust me faithful readers yoursquoll be along for the trip in a big way and Irsquoll share every minute I can with you all

Is it a sin to fall in love with a nun

There is nothing wrong with falling for a nun And for the most part itrsquos not a sin to fall in love but what is a sin is not to try a Nun at least once in a life time Some would argue that falling for a Nun is a big no no in godrsquos eyes Oops Sorry I think some of you may

have the wrong end of the stick Allow me to explain

A lemony sun percolates through the mist on to a bird of prey above the steep vine-lined slopes We are in the Rhine Valley home of fairy-tale castles chocolate box-style chalets and Blue Nun

Self-guided wine tours fulfil the sensual travellerrsquos desire to feast eyes and taste buds - and discard brain cells - in the same trip Taffy and I are on the trail of Germanyrsquos much-maligned former party favourite which is battling to get back in fashion in the UK Comments from friends such as lsquoI keep a bottle in the fridge to tackle red wine stainsrsquo donrsquot help But with cheap direct flights on Ryanair to Hahn gateway to the Rhine and tales of fantastic scenery food and wine (not things Germany gets much of a good press for) our curiosity gets the better of us

Since Roman times the Rhine Valley has produced grapes on every spare acre In June 2002 Unesco designated the Upper Middle Rhine

Valley a World Heritage Site - definitely time to pay a visit Blue Nun Liebfraumilch (angelrsquos milk) was the UKrsquos top selling fruity white in the Sixties and Seventies only to become chief whipping girl of the Eightiesrsquo new wine snobs You know who I mean - we all know at least one - yes Irsquom talking about you Louie who and others dismissed it as a sickly meacutelange bland predictable and classless on the palate with hints of Abigailrsquos Party and a nasty suburban finish Although currently enjoying an upturn in sales its damaged reputation is hard to shift Curse those French wine snobs

According to many a wine critic Blue Nun has always been a superior Liebfraumilch - faint praise damned by the rider that this is akin to being Saudi Arabiarsquos finest downhill skier

The Langguth estate bought the brand in 1996 and its rejig of the standard Blue Nun - lowering the sugar content - has proved a success with UK sales tripling in five years to about 12000 bottles a day The grapes for the standard Blue Nun are grown by 200 vintners in Swiss Rheinhessenin a flat region dotted with the occasional tiny hillock

As my lifelong friend Sister Taffy a Catholic nun and I make our way along the German countryside the Honda GL1800 hums a quiet constant harmony It makes short work of the kilometres leaving us rested and able to enjoy to landscapes that stretch out before us

The first port of call on a whistlestop two-day tour is the estate of Michael Moebus head of the Blue Nun co-operative in Siefersheim We start by sipping their Sekt (German sparkling wine) while looking over the rolling plain with the occasional hamlet and the distinctive angular steeples poking towards the autumn sun The harvest is getting under way with machinery taking the place of basket-laden handpickers

The Sekt is made solely with Sylvaner grapes untypical in a region dominated by Riesling Dry and crisp with a hint of chloroform it seems an odd choice of drink for elevenses Taffy and I stumble out from a traditional Rheinhessen lunch - pumpkin soup lamb and fruit heavily garnished with local herbs and estate wines There is a light Weisser Burgunder for starters a punchy Portugieser - a type of grape nothing to do with Portugal - light red with the main course and coffee with dessert Unlike spitting wine experts wersquove been glugging away heartily so the coffee seems like a lifesaver

motorcycle Taffy recalls that the reason the burghers of nearby Hamelin would not pay off the Pied Piper for removing the townrsquos rats was the size of his fee lsquo And half the money would replenishTheir cellarrsquos biggest butt with Rhenishrsquo So effectively it was for love of Rhine wine (Rhenish) that Hamelin lost all its children

Locals and holidaymakers stroll and cycle along the river bank Huge barges head from Switzerland to Rotterdam and the North Sea White towers thrust through the trees while restored thirteenth-century weigh stations converted into heritage sites sit stolidly in the centre of the river

Soon we cross the ridge which separates the Rheingau and Mosel valleys descending towards the smaller River Mosel This tighter valley has birds of prey of all kinds - red kites kestrels and eagles - hovering over the vertiginously banked vines lsquoHow do they harvest these grapes on such perilous slopesrsquo we ask

lsquoBy not drinking before they startrsquo replies our guidebook Cheeky but makes sense

We take no such precautions Dinner is taken in a wonky Fachwerkhaus (wood beam and plaster) restaurant in Traben-Trarbach home of the Langguth estate We kick off with a flute of the

Blue Nun Sekt Apparently they do an lsquoeditionrsquo of this with 22-carat gold-leaf flakes floating inside ldquoFranklyrdquo Taffy admits shersquod take any solid they offer - ldquoI must either eat or fall asleep at the tablerdquo Fortunately a delicious salad laced with cured Bavarian ham and cheese and nose-twitching vinegary dressing turns up along with our quarry

So in the warmly glowing upper room of a seventeenth-century Traben-Trarbach restaurant rather than amid the harsh snobbery of London how does the revamped Blue Nun taste The great French proverb sums up my addled thoughts as the liquid trickles down my throat lsquoNothing equals the joy of the drinker except the joy of the wine in being drunkrsquo That could have been an Irish proverb as well

To accompany the skillet of pork in cream and mushroom sauce and Schupfnudeln (Swabian noodles) we try Blue Nun Merlot (peppery) and Riesling (lemony) - all of which leave a warm feeling in the stomach Then as the conver sation turns to dinner-party failures - and having never held one in my life - Taffy and I decided we had better try the standard Blue Nun again to get to grips with it properly And again and again until it has truly got to grips with us

Taffy and I lsquotryrsquo the sweet amber Eiswein with pudding Apparently it is made by crushing frost-frozen grapes thus concentrating the sugarfruit content - although Irsquod believe anything by this point I resolve that when we get home I will suggest my friends get a cheap flight hire a car (with a teetotal friend driving) and get drunk in beautiful Rhineland - which probably wonrsquot cost much more than a night out getting drunk in London Trust me on that one

Cometh the dawn cometh the hangover - a simple matter of the body not containing enough coffee All thoughts of touching alchohol again go Our motorcycle helmets feel tight on our pounding heads The doctor orders a brisk walk around the vineyards of the Langguth estate first with the lemony sun percolating through the mist and_ you get the picture

Suppliers are the lifeblood of companies We rely on the free

flowing of parts and material from our suppliers to our doors to do our work You can imagine how frustrating it is after having parts on back order for three months to get an update from your supplier saying the next ETA is another six months

away My customer wants to finish his bike get it up and running but he has been patiently waiting for me to get his parts in I scramble calling my competitors

I end up referring my customer to someone else who has the parts in stock on the shelf

For the most part my supplier is pretty good at keeping parts in stock Where things break down is when the parts are for a vintage bike when they are not for a simple Evo based Softail build New products new bikes styles and trends come along You donrsquot want your shelves empty but you donrsquot want to fill the shelves on a part that is gamble to find fate picked the long draw My suppliers have their own suppliers the manufactures who build and package the actual part Some factories only run certain parts at certain times some are

closed for months at times as everyone tries to keep the doors open in the long run during this recession

I can only hope my customer is satisfied that I was able to locate an alternative I lost out on this sale but hopefully he will remember me next time he needs a part

Well folks here comes something you never saw coming Exactly that Coming out party yep mine I have been deep in the closet for many years only it is not the ldquoClosetrdquo most people think of

Ground Hog Day Bill Murrayrsquos Dark Humour about waking up day after day to the same nightmare sequence If I had to describe PTSD ( Post

Traumatic Stress Disorder) that might be the simplest Day after day night after night a confusing mess of anger inappropriate reactions no feelings fear flashbacks anxiety panic attacks depression and agoraphobia all mixed in for really good measure It is like a buffet of mental health disasters Pick as many from the list as you would like and if left unchecked you will probably get them all battle addictions destroy your family life your career alienate your friends and become socially dysfunctional and we have not even got to the violence

That was the executive summary of about 26 years of hell and on Groundhog day 2013 I had my coming out party I met with a close group of family and friends many of whom had known I had issues many suspected others knew they were to close to the epi-center of the melt down

So if you have not figured it out I have some real serious mental health issues It is time to talk about it February 12th was Bellrsquos Letrsquos talk about it day It is a good start but guess what It is that hellip a start We need to talk We need to get out of the shadows Ok not we me I hellip Enough

So why this year Why after 26 years What

changes things so drastically Well the short answer Thai Thai Lady yellow lab brown eyes Dudley nose floppy ears and slobbery kisses and my service dog Psychiatric Service dog Heavy label though it fits

So with our Editor and this publication as media sponsor I am taking a really long walk to sanity and you will now get to follow along with me as I try and execute on one simple plan 505050 I am going to be doing a series of long walks an average of over a half marathon a day starting in Eastern Passage Nova Scotia The end point will be Ottawa 50 service dogs in 50 days for 50 vets with mental health issues

There is many details to be worked out we are currently short a motor home a road captain and a few motel rooms a little bit a food some good weather and good fortune So as we undertake this journey together I want you to contemplate

one thing It is a very simple question and it begs an answer It is the million dollar question that is driving this It cuts and cuts deep We will save the question for another issue it is complex There have been great minds who have been debating it for a very long time

But know this My dog saved my life my marriage and my relationships with my kids Not bad considering I only got her 6 months ago and that is another whole story just know we are a long way from Kansas now Dorothy

So why do you want to follow along My story has nothing to do with combat and everything to due with horrific hand to hand fighting with the Grim Reaper You will get to come along on a strange journey one in which I hopefully I get further down the road since it is a Long Walk to Sanity

Clothing choices are rarely neutral and our inner secrets can be read in our choices Coco Chanel once said lsquoIf a woman is badly dressed itrsquos the dress wersquoll notice but if she is impeccably dressed itrsquos the woman herself wersquoll noticersquo

To take the article a little further and more specifically I want to focus on women

It has long been said that clothes make the man But it seems that what women wear can give a powerful insight into who they are too

Clinical psychologists - yes those people have claimed for years that our wardrobe decisions tell others about the secret desires that we are trying to hide

Too much cleavage (BC Premier Christy Clark knows what I talkingrsquo about) suggests you are power hungry and keen for control while over-the-top jewellery implies you are insecure and may have financial difficulties

What if I said Your clothes reveal what is really going on internally Your thoughts and feelings are laid bare in the closet and you just have to look for them

Now there are always plenty of wardrobe consultants who would tell you what and what not to wear as they describe the errors women typically make when buying clothes

Many women fall into the trap of only buying designer labels wearing office clothes all the time or simply buying too much

Another typical problem is getting stuck in a style rut defined as having not changed your look for the past five years or more Thatrsquos right those 80s headbands

Meanwhile wearing too much jewellery could be an attempt to tell others you are rich but actually implies that you are having money problems

Cleavage-exposing clothes such as those favoured by actress Christina Hendricks are about feeling powerful and in control and ndash perhaps unsurprisingly ndash knowing people will be looking at you Irsquom a personal fan of Christina

Women who button up their clothes are actually telling their boss that femininity means weakness not power while high heels can make women appear less intelligent but also inspire confidence by making the wearer as tall as their male colleagues

And if you often find yourself in jeans and trainers with unkempt hair beware

be overly identifying with motherhood and suppressing other parts of yourself possibly out of guilt or exhaustion

A young girl choosing a short skirt could be an attention seeker while an older woman doing the same is having difficulty accepting that she is a grown-up

All of our behaviours from the food we eat to the men we date are motivated by internal factors

Why is it any different with the clothes we buy and the way we buy them All you need to do is track your shopping habits or note the styles in your wardrobe to identify the patterns

It is then that you can make real change and find a wardrobe to match the new and improved you

To get yourself out of a fashion rut mix things up introducing contrasts such as a gold belt for an all-black outfit or something that makes a statement such as bright heels

Now one thing that really helps us girls is to go on a media diet to restrict their exposure to images that damage their self-esteem Out grow fashion magazines with pictures of airbrushed size-zero models which tell us yoursquore not good enough Horse Hockey

Ladies we are manipulated all the time - encouraged to buy the clothes someone else loves and told to choose a famous role model and observe how she dresses

We can do better than that and why Because we are worth it

ldquoItrsquos Only Februaryrdquo is at war with ldquoItrsquos Finally Februaryrdquo

The snow has turned to rain amp the runoff is making little rivers down the driveway

It is not so subtle in some spots amp in others one doesnrsquot see the little caverns amp tunnels under the ice

The beauty of winter wonderland is now becoming a dirty grey muddy mess

And the days are still so long but yeah itrsquos Only Feb

Then the sun comes out amp all is forgiven oh sweet Itrsquos Finally February

Our faces look upwards amp we soak it all in like needy children

We hunger for more amp our spirits fall as quickly as the clouds cover the sun again

And we remember what time of year it is

It is easier somehow for me to not worry about riding when it is December or January for the most part you simply just Canrsquot

But in February I am torn between Desire amp Distaste

The weather is so unpredictable the mud is everywhere the ice is still holding onto the ground with its tenacious little claws amp oh look Itrsquos gonna snow again

But then in that moment of absolute brilliance the sun reaffirms itrsquos own particular brand of hope again amp one sees the beauty of the blue sky amp bare pavementand the mind shifts gears to bike prep

And the hands grab a raincoat again

It may Only be February but itrsquos Finally here

BCrsquos autopsy rate woefully low

Itrsquos an astonishing fact in these murky times that only 11 of the corpses police deal with are autopsied This canrsquot possibly be adequate A glance at autopsy rates elsewhere confirms this suspicion Among developed countries 50 is about average In Sweden itrsquos nearly 90

The low autopsy rate means that murders then go undetected and unsolved

Why canrsquot more bodies be autopsied It boils down basically to a question of staffing Experts are few and thinly scattered across the country and BC as of right now only a handful are fully qualified to perform autopsies and even less of those are professors of forensic medicine for whom doing autopsies is a sideline Some prefectures have only one qualified medical investigator Any serious reform will involve first of all a vigorous program to train the necessary personnel in sufficient numbers

If one were to choose a single core responsibility of the Province it would probably be the prevention of violence Protecting people from homicide could not be more intimately related to the origins of and the justification for government So how come we donrsquot talk much about how poorly or well we are doing at it In the early 1960s it was typical for Canadian police to solve 90 to 95 per cent of all murders The figures for recent years after a long and steady decline are generally below 80 per cent in one year 2008 the clearance rate dipped to slightly below 70 per cent

Numbers released in June by the CCJS show that Canadian investigators enjoyed a good performance in 2010 by recent standards clearing 753 per cent of homicides A homicide is normally ldquoclearedrdquo by laying a charge against a perpetrator or by the mere identification of one for cases in which no arrest is possible (murder-suicides or self-defence killings for example) An odd feature of the decline in

This is not necessarily bad news We want murder files to be closed by the police through legitimate means with the suspects identified accurately Perhaps the 95 per cent clearance rates of the mid-1960s reflect a pre-Charter of Rights era in which it was easier to finagle a truncheon into the investigative process But there is no sharp change in the data that one might associate with a more active rights-oriented judiciary and contemporary cops donrsquot like to lean on the Charter as an excuse

In fact the homicide of a woman has 16 times the likelihood (expressed in odds) of being cleared as that of a man and that of an Aboriginal victim has 18 times that of a non-Aboriginal one Plug situational factors into the model however and the race and gender effects disappear

For persons killed at home versus those killed elsewhere the odds ratio is a whopping 24 For rural homicides versus urban itrsquos 19 And the method of killing makes a big difference Compared to handgun homicides long-gun killings have 22 times stronger odds of being cleared beatings and stranglings three times and stabbings 38 times

Although the rate of homicide has been declining over the past 20 years quite significantly the unsolved murders have risen

To be sure if BC and Quebec have cleverer better-organized gangs than everyone elsemdashwhich seems possible even likelymdasha logistic regression model that treats all gang murders the same would fail to capture that (Regression is in general a finicky procedure)

There is too much information available online and by watching crime TV that empowers those with murder in their minds to cover their tracks Our system only because of staffing is allowing more murderers to get away with it

Have you ever felt like life has you on a treadmill that is going faster and faster almost out of control Has someone in your family recently lost their job Are you struggling with family conflict Or are you a single-parent working harder and harder trying to make a difference in your childrsquos life These are difficult issues that at times may involve weighty decisions As your head swims in clouds of indecision what can you do to keep your head above water Perhaps you just need to stop and smell the roses

ldquoStop and smell the rosesrdquo is an expression that means to physically and mentally slow down and stop in order to appreciate the smaller things in life that bring joy to your heart Those ldquosmaller thingsrdquo are not inconsequential or valueless items Many times the smaller things are what actually prompted you to make major decisions or to prioritize items in your life Recalling things that help you touch base with life could be as simple as a babyrsquos smile or observing a breathtaking sunset There are many ways to smell your roses Perhaps a day for yourself at the spa a nature walk or just sitting

and going through old photo albums will stir your senses For me all those work I mostly tap into my love of motorcycles and go for a ride

To touch base with those roses in your life you may want to take a break from your regular routine For instance a mother might be overwhelmed by her household duties by placing an unrealistic burden on herself and family by insisting on an immaculately clean home However when she takes time out of her routine to visit an old friend that recently has lost her child in a car accident she sees things a little differently I speak from experience on this example

Reflecting on my friendrsquos loss essentially stopping to smell the roses results in the realization that a clean home means nothing without a family to live in it Her family not the house should always be the priority Now the pressure of keeping a perfect home is no longer an issue Although this is a

fictional example I think you get the point

I am also a firm believer in walking to alleviate daily stress A regular walking program can reduce your stress hormones blood pressure and overall mood The best part of walking though is seeing up close the things you donrsquot see when driving Walking is a great way to stop and smell the roses While walking along a country path I recently saw two deer a groundhog a black squirrel three cows and two horses There was a certain tranquility amidst the thickets of green leaves and trees that daily life was missing Stopping to smell the roses did not get rid of my problems However it has contributed to an inner calmness and a clearer focus on what really is important If I can get that from walking then I had better invest in a better pair of walking shoes

just for youbull How much time is built into your week for reflection and for rechargingbull We live in a world where we tend to feel guilty for doing nothing and cram so much into our lives that we leave no time to truly relax and reflect Start giving yourself permission on a regular basis to sit and do nothing more than just think Itrsquos only when we get off the treadmill of stressed-out and busy that we can start to hear our intuition and life begins to flow Some exercises

bull Take half a day or a day off to just reflect Enjoy it Do the activities in the other freebie articles vision values and spend some time figuring out what is really important to you and what is just mere clutter

I am currently evaluating my activities based on the following 4 quadrants and you might find them useful too

bull Things that I love to do that also make me money spend the most time here

bull Things that I donrsquot much like to do but are a necessary part of my business (eg they make me money) look for opportunities to delegate set up systems that get them done quickly with less effort

bull Things that I love to do that donrsquot make me money (passions time out contribution) enjoy them and donrsquot feel guilty spending some time here

bull Things that I donrsquot like to do and donrsquot make me money (time wasters shouldsrsquo) kick to touch Note You can replace money with any other measure you wish to use contribution health just use your common-sense to tweak where necessary

bull Make a list of 10 daily pleasures that would bring you joy Start incorporating these into your life including any that feel far too indulgent We only live once after all and I know I certainly wouldnrsquot want to go out having denied myself simple pleasures because I was just too busy

bull Remind yourself that therersquos plenty of time to get everything important done I am effortlessly achieving all that I need to todayrsquo Reframe how you think about the day and how busy itrsquos going to be and yoursquoll find that suddenly miraculously days just seem to get easier and less busy

The Justice Ministry in BC has issued an unusual public warning about a female high-risk violent offender whorsquos been released from jail 23-year-old Kayla Bourque plans to live in Vancouver

In September 2009 Bourque was convicted of killing animals causing unnecessary pain and suffering or

injury to animals

In March 2012 she was found guilty of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose but charges of possessing child pornography were stayed She was sentenced to one month in jail and three years of probation

She expressed an interest in harming other people The branch said Bourque has also offended violently against people is being closely monitored by authorities and has 46 court-ordered conditions she must follow Among thoseBourque has a curfew from 6 pm to 6 am and isnrsquot allowed to access social networking sites

Bourque is also forbidden from possessing any weapons including knives or other bladed instruments except to prepare food and must stay away from people under age 18

The petite 130 pound woman studied criminology and psychology at Simon Fraser University last year

Prof Rob Gordon who heads the criminology department at SFU said the university called police after another student told a teaching assistant that Bourque mentioned some of her crimes and that she may have spoken about her fantasies of killing a homeless person

Bourque was admitted to the psychiatric unit at Burnaby General Hospital before being convicted of killing animals and jailed he said

Bourque was adopted as a child from an orphanage in Romania and lived in Prince George before moving to Burnaby to attend university

But herersquos the thing -

Individuals become killers when they become so frustrated and the rage inside them becomes so intense that they finally take out their hurt on other living beings Serial Killers usually feel incapable of dealing with everyday situations They may have deep seated issues with authority and feel that they have been badly treated or treated unfairly This leads to a growing anger which may manifest itself in the act of killing the type of person who they feel has caused them trouble - who is the source of their problems They may start with animals and find that the act of killing gives them a sense of power which they often donrsquot have and gives them relief That relief is short lived and leads to further killings Moving from animals to humans quite often happens They are all to some degree mental ill and need help to find other ways of dealing with their feelings of inadequacy

Kayla Bourque has an ldquoescalating criminal historyrdquo Quite clearly she is a disturbed young lady and is obviously in need of help So of course our system abandons her I dare say we have learnt little from the Missing Womenrsquos Inquiry and even when an individual Kayla is identified as a high risk she is not helped and will not be until she actually kills a human-being

The opening chapter of Heavy Duty Attitude is prefaced with a newspaper clipping in The Guardian dated 15 May 2009 about the fatal stabbing of a nightclub ldquosecurityrdquo guard and another about a retaliatory biker brawl on June 8 The first book in The Brethren trilogy is immediately tied to the first when Iain Parke a journalist for The Guardian and author of Heavy Duty People gets invited to meet with the new president of The Brethren MC

The writing is convincing Obviously the real-life author is a rider and intimately familiar with outlaw clubs but the first-person technique of assuming the main character role and inclusion of a real bookmdashHeavy Duty People ISBN 9780956161512mdashinto a work of fiction becomes only the first step in blurring the line between fact and fantasy The story is action packed the plot tight and the reader doesnrsquot know what is going to happen next There are opposing sides and shifting alliances both inside the club and out combined with that of an unknown player and a journalist caught in the middle Like any good mystery or spy thriller there are unexpected twists and you feel like you can almost but not quite grasp the thread running through the story as suspense builds towards the climax

British 1er clubs formed a bit later than those in the US but the author follows

the historical timeline for the consolidation of independent clubs into chapters of international organizations and creates an amalgam from various incidents during the ldquobiker warsrdquo of the last couple of decades In reality over a 150 people died in the conflicts between the Hellrsquos Angels and the Rock Machine in Montreal the Hellrsquos Angelrsquos clubhouse in Copenhagen was attacked with an anti-tank rocket and AK-47rsquos in 1996 the Warwickshire chapter of the Outlaws MC gunned down a Hells Angel member in 2007 and there have been car bombings Iain Parke fictionalizes all of these events and brings them together to create a very compelling adventure story that smacks of authenticity

This is the second book in The Brethren trilogy The first was Heavy Duty People a novel so convincing that it has frequently been reviewed as being a biographical novel based on prison interviews with former Brethren president Martin ldquoDamagerdquo Robertson Although the second book is a sequel and certain elements and characters link them each stands completely on their own and each has a distinct style of writing In fact I read the second before opening the first The final book Heavy Duty Trouble has been released and it doesnrsquot disappoint Personally I recommend ordering all three books and setting aside some personal time ndash you wonrsquot want to put them down

BMG Pioneer Pants Cold Weather Comfort Without WiresReviewed by Ken Aiken

When the weather is cold and nasty but you still want to ride yoursquoll probably wish that you had a pair of BMG Pioneer pants to slip on BMG stands for British Motorcycle Gear and riders on the other side of the pond get plenty of damp chilly days that would strand most Canadian riders in the garage The solution is proper gear that keeps you warm and dry

Pioneer pants are rated all-season but even with the zip-out Thermolite layer I have to classify them as being 3 season simply because I canrsquot imagine wearing something this warm during the summer However during those long months between September and May the Pioneer pants are as good as any electrically heated gearmdashperhaps even better since they donrsquot drain the battery and therersquos no umbilical cord tethering you to the bike

Testing them during October (without the liner) wasnrsquot quite enough so I wore them x-country skiing and snowmobiling With the liner I was comfortable at -27degC (-16degF) with a strong wind blowing I think this is good enough for 9999 of motorcyclists I rode in the rain but not for hours of the heavy stuff nor did I slide down pavement to test the abrasion resistance - therersquos a limit as to how far Irsquoll deliberately test gear

Pioneer pants are constructed of 500-denier Cordura nylon with reflective Lumidex on the

outside of the upper thigh and 3M reflective piping on front pocket and cuff zippers They have a hydrophilic membrane between the liner and outer fabric that allows water vapor to escape but doesnrsquot allow water through its molecular structure There are thigh and knee pockets for Knox Traumalite armor (included) and a double layer of Cordura on the seat and knees The fly is gusseted zippered and has a storm flap with Velcro The cuffs have 12-inch YKK zippers and Velcro cinch straps with D-rings The snap waist has an elastic belt with two cinch straps Two zippered slash front pockets a rear zipper for attachment to BMG jackets and a belt D-ring for clipping keys or sunglasses The Thermolite liner zips to the pants at the waist and cuff straps with metal snaps secure to loops Pioneer pants are available in waist sizes 23-46 and inseam 28-37 inches Black is the only color option

I especially like gear that can also be used for other things As such I have to classify these as being motorcyclesnowmobileski pants that are suitable for any cold wet activity thatrsquos not aquatic This product is a very good design that uses excellent materials and has fine workmanship Itrsquos made in China which explains why such a quality product can be sold for only $229

Oil and bug-stained they no longer lie flat but thatrsquos okay because over the years theyrsquove become like a second skin You might loan your jacket or give the shirt off your back but your gloves are contoured to your hands alone My cherished pair is nothing more than tough ranch gloves of elk hide sewn together with the addition of a simple metal snap at the wrist Not so good for cold-weather riding though

Imagine a pair of ranch gloves designed for cold-weather motorcycling touring Line the gloves with knitted 100 pure merino wool and add a windproof fabric sandwiched between the wool and deerskin back of the glove Add an oversized gauntlet to prevent frigid air from rushing up your jacket sleeve and a wrist strap Just in case cover the knuckles with a strip of TF3 foam armor and partially reinforce the elk hide palms with a second layer Since these are motorcycle

ldquoBroke down on the side of the highway

bluesrdquoHard to imagine any rider with a few years under their belt who hasnrsquot found themselves in the unenviable position of being left standing and staring at their ldquoriderdquo parked on the

shoulder of the road while contemplating their next move

I remember my first bike an 84 Yamaha 1100 that was a great bike for its vintage but was known to have inherent electrical problems hence my introduction to the ldquoBroke down at the side of the highway bluesrdquo Back in the day of my 84 I made good use of my BCAA roadside (towing) membership and it paid for itself many times over

When I purchased my first Harley ( 2005 Softail Deluxe ) I figured my break down days were over with but to my surprise I picked up a nail in my tire and sat on the side of the highway on a beautiful sunny Sunday afternoon waiting a couple of hours for my good old reliable roadside assistance pals to show up Turned out they sent a regular tow truck (after having clearly requested a truck with a hydraulic deck) and so I waited another hour and a half for the 2nd truck They had the idea to simply pump up the back tire and follow me which they did for about a block then blasted off to their next emergency And as Murphyrsquos law kicked in the tire went absolutely

flat after the 3rd block

Another two hours later in the twilight of the day the 3rd truck rolls back to greet me on the side of the road and you guessed it it was the first truck again Not the flat deck For austerity sake lets just say that when the 4th truck came to finally get my bike loaded onto the deck the atmosphere wouldnrsquot have been rated PG or family entertainment

And of course there are the breakdowns that seemingly happen at the absolute worst times like in the middle of a thunder storm or when its 99o in the heat of the day and of course the ldquorush hourrdquo special Everyone driving by has to get into the act with their two-cents worth Thank goodness most other bikers will show common courtesy and lend a hand or a word of support when the see a fellow rider broke down

The interesting paradox here is how those of us who ride naturally expect there will be times when for one reason or another we will experience a break down on the side of the road It may not necessarily be our bike but rather a bike in the group we may be riding with This is pretty much a ldquogivenrdquo

And so why should it seem such a surprise when in our personal lives we experience a break-down of something in our personal lives Such as a marriage a family relationship ndashson or daughter- or perhaps a health issue a career gone off the rails or maybe the consequences of an addiction

The key difference here is that when we call a towing company to come and pickup our bike and rescue us from the side of the highway its something pretty much every rider would do Yet when our personal lives leave us stranded on the roads of life I wonder how many people turn to God

Our ldquoowners manual for liferdquo ( the living WORD of God ) is full of promises and one of them is that God will never leave us nor forsake us Another is that he hears us when we cry out to him Another promise is He is an ever present help in times of trouble

The next time you find yourself with a challenge in your life that is stressing you out where you feel there is nowhere to turn and no way out remember there is a loving God our Father in heaven who is available 247 and he is wanting to rescue you from whatever might be troubling you

I am positive that I am not alone in re-evaluating my dreams - of examining them to make sure they align with your core values

It is those times that we small business owners and every human being out there lives for

I have been utterly blessed

I am so humbled by the team that has gathered around me - those whose ideologies dreams and needs seem to be parallel to mine
