A Tragic Love StoryGrainne, the daughter of an Irish war lord who was to wed the giant Fionn MacCool, leader of the warrior band the Fianna, but instead, she ran off with Diarmuid, a young Fianna warrior.

The tale begins at the wedding feast, a celebration of Grainne and Fionns engagement. During the feast, Grainne sees Diarmuid, the young, handsome Fianna warrior, and falls in love with him at first sight.

She decides to run away from her wedding to Fionn, with Diarmuid. She dispenses a magical potion and puts the guests at the celebration to sleep.

She asks Diarmuid to run away with her but his loyalty is to Fionn and the Fianna. Grainne was determined and put a spell on Diarmuid that causes him to fall in love with her forever. The lovers run away. Fionn was in hot pursuit.

Using all of the different nooks and crannies Irelands landscape has to offer, they manage to evade Fionn. Over time the giants rage subsides and a half-hearted reconciliation takes place.

Fionn allows the couple to live in peace for a number of years. One day, while wandering through Sligos wilderness near Benbulben, Grainne and Diarmuid come across Fionn who invites Diarmuid to a wild boar hunt.

It had been prophesized that Diarmuid would be killed by a wild boar, but despite the prediction, he accepted the invitation. Diarmuid and the boar engaged in what is described as an epic battle and Diarmuid emerges the victor, killing the boar but not before sustaining a fatal wound.

The only person that could cure the dying Diarmuid was Fionn.

A drink of water, cupped from the hands of the giant, would have magically restored the warrior back to health.

In spite of the pleas by Grainne, and the members of the Fianna, Fionn refused to help Diarmuid.

The pleas of Grainne and other members of the Fianna continued but by the time Fionn changed his mind, it was too late.

Diarmuid lay dead on Benbulben. According to the folk tale, Grainne later took her own life.

Drumcliffe ~ Sligo CountyWe left the roadside where we had been taking photos and listening to Pauls tale and headed into the village of Drumcliffe.

While visiting Drumcliffe, I learned an enormous amount of the areas history and being a writer I found it exceedingly

interesting, so pardon if I bore you with a bit of it.

In 521, Saint Colmcille was born in County Donegal. Born to a chief who was related to several princes who were reigning in Ireland and Scotland, Crevan (his baptised name) went to Moville to study to become a member of the priesthood.

Crevan earned the nick name Colmcille, which means Dove of the Church, while studying in Moville.

(Reportedly he spent all of his free time in

the Church, studying the Blessed Sacrament.)

He became an ordained priest in 546 and founded his first monastery in Derry. In all, over 17 years of preaching in Ireland, he founded 30 churches and or monasteries.

The monastery in Drumcliffe was founded in 574 by Saint Colmcille.

Saint Colmcille was a reknowned scribe who trained his monks to become experts and it is the Colmcille Monks who created the Book of Kells which is considered to be Irelands finest national treasure.

Drumcliffe has a rather unique place in history as it is the place where the very first copyright violation was fought over.

St. Colmcille is reported to have borrowed a very valuable Psalter manuscript from St. Finian.

A Psalter is the 150 Psalms from the Bible composed into its own book separate from the Bible.

When the manuscript was returned, St. Finian discovered it had been copied without permission.

Saint Colmcille was of the frame of mind that the word of God belonged to everyone.

Saint Finian believed his work was intellectual property.

High King of Tara, Diarmuid, heard Saint Colmcilles case. He ruled that the book copied by Colmcille belonged to Saint Finian. To every cow, its little cow, that is its calf, and to every book, its little book (copy). Because of that, Colmcille, the book you copied is Finians.

St. Columbas Church & W.B. YeatsFought on the slopes of the Benbulben Mountain, the Battle of Cooldruman also known as the Battle of the Books was fought and as many as 3,000 died.

Colmcille won that battle but did not assume the role of High King. He left Ireland to do penance for the lives that had been lost and became known as the Apostle of Scotland for building some 56 churches and schools.

Drumcliffe is also the final resting place of Irelands most famous of poets, William Butler Yeats.

Laid to rest at the St. Columbas Church of Ireland (Columba is the alternate name of Saint Colmcille), Yeats actually died in France.

His great grandfather had been the rector of St. Columbas church at one time. His father was a lawyer and a world renowned portrait artist, John Butler Yeats. As a child, W.B. Yeats spent much of his vacation time in Sligo County although he was educated in both Dublin and London.

Yeats not only won a Nobel Prized for his

literature, but is considered to be the foremost literary figure of the 20th century.

In spite of winning the Nobel prize in 1923, his greatest accomplishments as a writer did not come until AFTER the award. Some of those works are The Tower, written in 1928 and the Winding Stair written in 1929.

The slide show above gives you a feel for the church and the graveyard.

St. Columbas is ornate and yet not. For example, the stained glass windows are exceedingly plain while the marble work is ornate indeed. The organ is very ornate and draws the eye immediately as does the magnificentinlaidwallontheoppositeendof the church. Continued Next Page...

St. Columbas Church & W.B. Yeats

WB Yeats was highly involved in the Literary Revival in Ireland and was one of the founding members of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

He became a member of the Irish senate and served two terms in that role. His contributions to nationalistic pride in Ireland are many.

The Church of St. Columba is absolutely stunning. Built in 1809 using some of the stones of the original monastery.

In the photo to the right is a relaxation area that was built by the Drumcliffe Development Association and created by Jackie McKenna in 2002.

    The engraved words are:

HAD I the heavens embroidered cloths,Enwrought with golden and silver light,The blue and the dim and the dark clothsOf night and light and the half light,I would spread the cloths under your feet:But I, being poor, have only my dreams;I have spread my dreams under your feet;Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

He wished for the cloths of Heaven W.B. Yeats 1899

In fact, one of the few Celtic High Crosses and part of the original round tower from the monastery are still standing. Local folklore states that the round tower will finally collapse fully when the wisest man in the world passes under it.

After spending some time in the church and the graveyeard, we headed into the restaurant/gift shop for some lunch.

There were a good number of people availing themselves of lunch and consequently there

was a line up, do before I even ordered my coffee and soup, I decided to wander across the lane and check out the art gallery.

The gallery is attached to the only home on the property and there was this gorgeous cat in the window that I managed to catch a perfect shot of.

The gallery was nothing fancy, mostly prints laid out on a table for sale and a small

number of pieces on the wall. Most were abstracts and not exactly to my personal taste, but I did find a gorgeous pencil drawing copy of W.B. Yeats and for 3 Euro, the artist, Tom ORourke even signed the back of it for me.

My curiosity satisfied, I went back to the Tea Shop and ordered a bowl of carrot soup for

lunch. It was so flavourful that I could have gone for another bowl but opted instead for a piece of carrot cake!

We did a little shopping in the gift area of the Tea Shop, Paul gifted me with a CD of Sligo area poetry where all of the poems are recited by locals and a gorgeous Writers of Ireland calendar that now graces my office wall. The peotry on the CD coupled with the calendar are very inspirational to me.

We walked out to the motorcycles and got ready to ride towards the Ceide Fields.

Our next stop along the way was to be the village of Killala.

The weather alternated between beautiful and sunny and overcast and cloudy, but the temperature stayed pretty constant, around 70 degrees. It made for pleasurable riding through a varied landscape.

As we headed through the town of Ballina, it tried to rain on us, but it was a half hearted attempt! The sky was filled with heavy clouds that were interspersed with big blue patches!

    Killala

By the time we got to Killala, we were under brilliant sunshine. We had ridden through some very pretty country to get here and it was time to take a break and snoop around a bit.

Killala is a beautiful coastal community where fishing is as abundent as the history!

Killala dates back to the time of St. Patrick, 442-3 and holds one of the best examples of an Irish Round Tower. The very fact that this community has a round tower, means that is was a very important church based centre.(Ecclesiastical centre).

The tower itself stands some 85 feet tall and is visible from every point in the community.

The community was home to a pair of great battles whose results shaped Irelands future.

During the Rebellion of 1798, the United Irishmen had invited the French general, General Humber to Kilcummin in County Mayo. Reportedly, Irish volunteers flocked to join with the French and on September 23rd,

Killala1798, they defeated the British Army.

The town came but under British rule only 32 days later when the British defeated the Rebel Irish forces.

The film, The Year of the French based on the novel by Thomas Flanagan, was filmed here.

Although we did not have time to stop to see them, there are many other interesting ancient sites to visit in this small area:

1 - Rosserk Abbey (founded in 1400 AD as an early Franciscan Friary) 2 - Moyne Abbey 3 - Rathfran Abbey (Dominican Priory 1274 AD)

    4 - Meelick Castle 5 - Humberts Rock

If I was to return to Ireland, this is one of many spots that I would want to spend time filming and documenting. It is utterly gorgeous.

Ceide FieldsWe headed up the coast 8 kilometers or so and were treated to a most amazing seascape.

The multi colored layers of the Minaun (Minnaun) Cliffs cast against the rough seas caused by high winds were truly impressive.

We pulled into the visitor centre at the Ceide Fields and then walked across the road to go take some photos. Even though it had become very windy, we were all drawn to the water it seemed.

After about 15 minutes, we headed into the visitor centre where I interviewed the manager, Gretta Byrne.

Gretta was absolute gold to interview. She was eloquent and knowledgeable and she was very passionate.

The Ceide Fields are the oldest known measured out farm fields in the world.

They date back to before the Egyptians built the pyramids!

Well over 5,000 years old, these ancient farm fields and their fences remained a total mystery until 1930 and the magnitude of their existence wasnt to be known for a further 40 years!

Local school teacher Patrick Caufield took note of the stacked stone walls he uncovered while cutting peat from the bog here. 40 years later, his son who became an archeologist, Seamus, began studying the stone walls and discovered their true meaning. Some 5,000 or more years ago, this region was settled by a group of peaceful farmers who all seemed to work together. Stone walls dividing out measured fields, dwellings and megalithic tombs.

At one time this region had been heavily forested with Scots Pine, the same as the one in the middle of the visitor centre. The pine tree in the visitors centre had actually fallen over into the bog and eventually was swallowed up. The bog preserved it and when it was uncovered, it was dated to 4,300 years ago.

Today, there isnt a tree to be found for miles in this part of County Mayo!

No one is sure of why thisregion was abandoned. It is assumed that as the climate in the region changed

and became less use of the bog that was forming, the inhabitants migrated elsewhere.

After we left the visitor centre, we headed towards Ballycroy National Park.

The scenery alternated between the pastoral rolling hills and valleys of farm land and impressive seascapes. It seemed you never knew what to expect from one curve to the next.

We travelled through Kiltane and by the time we got to Mallarany, it had become even windier as we rode along and so the decision was made that we would ride to the Burrishoole Friary and then to the B & B we were to stay in at Westport.

The wind was particularly hard on Stephanie and her swollen left hand.

Burrishoole FriaryRiding along the coast meant the terrain was varied. One moment it was water on the right and hills on the left, then you were riding in near flat terrain and then you were climbing mountains. It was incredible in spite of the wind!

We arrived at the Burrishoole Friary (Abbey)and my breath was completely taken away.

Riding into the place was so beautiful that I turned around and rode back in by myself so I could truly capture this place.

This place is enchanting, haunting and absolutely filled with rich, rich history.

Although used by many the term Abbey to describe this place is inaccurate. The Dominican order for which this Friary was founded did not have abbots.

Although founded in 1469 by Sir Richard de Burgo, the friary did not actually have the

    Popes permission to build it.

The permission and forgiveness by the Pope came in 1486.

They Friary had a very rough history because of the regional turmoil. Several times the Do-minicans had been expelled but they kept re-turning. In 1652, Sisters Honoria Bourke and Honoria Magean, both over 100 years of age, we tortured by English soldiers, they escaped

but were later captured during the month of February, were stripped naked, had their ribs broken and were left to die.

Friar Manus Sweeney is buried between the walls of the Friary. In 1799, he was hanged

by the British forces for the role he had played during the French backed rebellion in 1798.

In spite of the violence and atrocities that took place or that are connected to this site, it is a peaceful and mystical place.

I could have spent a day photographing this place. The ruins are spectacular and the graveyard is filled with head stones dating back hundreds of years.

With the ocean as a backdrop, the small boats dotting the inlet, the place is eerie and yet...man I hate trying to describe emotions that are so complex!

After I got done doing some video and

photos, I headed back to where our bikes were parked only to be told that the tide had come in so fast our bikes had to be rescued!

With one last look over my shoulder at one of the most painfully pretty places I have ever seen, we were off towards Westport and our B & B for the next

    two days, the Cillcoman Lodge.

    This country is so beautiful.

Ireland as I was fast learning, has it all.

Great riding, amazing history and scenery and incredible food, drink and hospitality.

The Cillcoman Lodge B & B provides fabulous amenities and a warm and inviting atmosphere.

We were never destined to hook up to ride together though we tried!

(Sindi and two others in her party had also booked with Celtic Rider).

I was shown to my room on the second floor by Bernard and was deeply appreciative of yet another B & B with a private bath and a generous sized room.

I dropped my gear and flopped on the bed to test it out - mmm, I was going to sleep well, I knew it!

I had the lamb served with steamed vegetables. I wished I could describe just how tender and juicy the meat was and the carrots TASTED like carrots.

My lord it was wonderful to eat it this country.

The food is so flavourful, eating out everyday was a pleasure, not a chore that must be endured!

We didnt dally long, as we wanted to go into Westport and see what the town had to offer at night.

I could not believe the people out in the streets.

Every pub it seemed was filled to the rafters! There was a stag and stagette taking place and people were carrying around blow up

dolls and dressed in all types of costumes, it was hilarious!

After drinking in a little of the nightlife we hopped a cab and headed back to the Lodge.

As predicted I slept like a log, but I was up and at it early as I had to switchcameras for charging and tag video and photos.

At breakfast the next morning, Stephanie

expressed concern over her hand and whether or not shed be able to pull the clutch in or not.

We all packed up and headed towards Connemara National Park and Kylemore Abbey.

It wasnt very far up the road before Steph pulled over and said she just couldnt do it.

A discussion ensued roadside and it was decided that Steph and Paul would head back to the B & B so she could repack things and have the bike picked up by Pauls son Liam.

Joe had agreed to pack Stephanie, but it would mean shed only be able to carry a small amount of gear spread over two bikes.

Siobhan, Joe and I headed off to Kylemore Abbey and Steph and Paul turned back.

Theyd catch up to us later in the day.

The ride to the Abbey was windy and overcast and by the time we got to the Abbey it was

Heading to Connemarra & Kylemore Abbeyraining fairly hard. There were a few tense moments where the wind was pushing pretty hard and I was leaning with all my might to stay on the road. All I could think was its a good thing Steph didnt try to push herself any harder than she had.

There was a wonderful moment where we pulled over to go see a waterfall and Joe called to a horse out in the field and the horse came right up to him.

We decided to go and explore the Abbey, church and grounds and have our lunch later in the day so that Stephanie and Paul could join us.

As we walked and read the various panels of information about this place, I have to tell you I was moved. The story and history of Connemara National Park and Kylemore Castle/Abbey is an emotional one. And one Ill tell you, next week! BDB

WHATS ON YOUR TOP TEN LIST?

Ive been planning some big road trips this coming summer and through this process, I couldfeel the excitement building already and the adrenalin rush starting to percolate.

So I began asking myself, just what is it that I love so much about riding? After awhile I realized that I could really come up with a Top Ten list. How about you?

    Heres mine:

    # 10 Just love the feel of my bike when I kick itintofirstgearforthefirsttimeonanygivenday and I hear that sweet sound of stage one pipes.

#9 When I get up to highway speeds and put my boots on the highway pegs.

#8 The scenery. Be it mountains, rivers, oceans, lakes.

#7 The aromas that we experience on our bikes, that wed never smell in our cages.

#6 That magical few minutes just before the clouds burst and we get rained on... the surrealsense of riding into a storm and that acrid, cold dew-like smell in the air.

#5 I love exploring new places, especially

twisty roads Ive never before seen.

#4 The people I meet on road trips are always ahighlightforme...whodhaveeverfiguredthat the common interest of motorcycles breaks down walls unites so many different types of people and personalities?

#3 Summertime road trips where the mercury is pushing 90o or more and sleeveless shirts are the order of the day.

#2 Riding with friends is something I never take for granted.

#1 When riding outside city limits I absolutely treasure my happy place where I get lost in my surroundings and I talk to God and praise him a lot.

I think you get the picture... Im passionate about riding for sure, but my #1 passion is my faithin Jesus Christ and my relentless efforts to introduce bikers everywhere, to my Jesus.

In our Owners Manual for life, we read in John 3:16

For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son; that whosever believes in him,

shall not perish but have eternal life.

This is one of the most popular and well known verses in the scriptures, but did you really knowthesignificanceofthisoneverse?

Now read this one more time, but with a little commentary.

A casual remark (thats a lady bike) inspired the question: Why dont women have their own motorcycles? Why should we make due with small mens bikes painted pink? AKA My Two Bits Worthby Belt Drive Betty

Defending your position in Australia, California and Grande Prairie AB...On Tuesday, Campbell Newman announced that his government would look at rescinding the Anti Bikie Laws in 2016. According to the article from Yahoo News 7, Newman claims that was the plan all along.

Begin Quote: Premier Campbell Newman on Tuesday said his government intended to repeal tough legislation targeting outlaw motorcycle gangs after a three-year review. End Quote

Also out of Queensland comes an article from a formerseniorpoliceofficerturnedlawyer, whorecommends that motorcyclists videotape their encounters with police as it puts them in a much better position for a half decent stop.Begin Quote Adam Macgill said video

evidence would show alleged targeting of innocentriderswasnotafigmentofthesepeoples imaginations, following the case of a Wynnum motorcyclist whose encounter with police has been viewed more than 487,000 times on YouTube.....

He (Macgill) told Fairfax Media it was unlikely motorcyclists pulling out cameras would reduce the chances of being stopped by police, but if you know youre on video, you play cricket with a straighter bat. End Quote.

Australia is the only democratic country in the world that does not have a Charter of Freedoms and Rights and as a result, there is very little for protection for the average rider from the anti bike laws.

If it really was the plan of Queensland Government to repeal the laws after the three-year review, why has he waited until now to announce that? Did the YouTube video from

the rider who was stopped over 21 times have anything to do with Newman making that announcement? I guess well never know.

Some positions simply cant be defended and harassment like the rider in the video has experienced is one of those.

By making that announcement, I wonder if Newman is hoping that people will look at the Anti Bikie laws and think - Short term pain for long term gain. What do you think? Id dearly love to know.

Also in the news today, comes word of a massive rally in California at the state capitol.TheMotorcycleRiderUnificationRallywasheldto protest the diminishing of freedoms and rights by motorcyclists as well as the NHSTAs push for conspicuous clothing among other things. The riders gathered at the rally represented every kind of rider from Hells Angels and outlaws to the independent. Every race, every brand and pretty much every kind of patch was on hand.

These people are defending their right to ride, to be a part of the motorcycle community and to do so peacefully.

It would sure be nice to see Canadian bikers get together in this fashion to protect our rights and freedoms that are diminishing just as fast here, as they are south of the border.

I wonder if I will live long enough to see that become a reality.

There is also an article on a man who is now doing jail time over a little ride he took with his son. The father took his 22-month-old son for a motorcycle ride and coming around a corner lostcontrol.Bothofthemwentflyingabout50feet, neither of them was wearing a helmet, according to the police the man panicked and locked up his front brake. The child died as a result of head injury and the man was charged with aggravated child abuse among other things.

According to the article Moore defended his actions-BeginQuote:Mooretestifiedhedtaken his toddler and older sons for dozens of rides without trouble. End QuoteThe man was sentenced to one year in jail.

Where do you stand on this issue, what do you think of his defense? Should he be in jail?

So heres where things stand with my defense:

Mylawyerhasfiledmystatementofdefenseinthe Sturgis North, Ray Sasseville, Joan Hansen lawsuit. Ali has added my statement of defense documents to the Belt Drive Betty defense page. Because of the support of this community, I haveroundedthefirstcornerinwhatcouldprove to be a lengthy court battle. I say lengthy because the lawyer from the other side has been replaced by Ray until a new lawyer comes

    on board.

Not only has it been a very humbling experience to have to ask this community for help, but it was also very humbling to talk to my banker and to be reassured that this situation would not affect my business loan. When she read the lawsuit document, she couldnt believe that a lawyerwouldactuallyfilethiskindoflawsuit.

Because 4 of us are sharing the same lawyer, I have been told that a realistic goal for my defense fund would be $15-$20,000 if this drags out at all.

These people have nothing to stand on, the lawsuit against me is groundless, frivolous, a nuisance, an enormous drain on time and resources - but I have to defend myself and go through this exercise.

Id counter sue if there was actually a hope of collecting, but based on the Michael Smith win, I wont bother. I fear I would just be throwing more good money down the tubes.

I am looking forward to my day in court though. ThefightwasbroughttomeandIwontbackdown and because of you, I dont have to.

From what I read on the VancouverMotorcycle show website, its a good thing that I havevolunteersrunningmyboothinVancouver,as those who are suing me will be there.

To those who have already donated to the Belt Drive Betty defense fund, I want to thank you

from the bottom of my heart. I still have a ways to go, but with your help I know Ill get there.

To those thinking about donating, I ask you to consider either subscribing to our newspaper or advertising with us if you are a rider who owns a business. When you advertise with us, you help the Busted knuckle Chronicles to spread thenewsfartherafield.

Hi My name is Shawn Lee and I own S & S custom Tattoos in Edmonton, Alberta and would like to say hey hows it going and let you know that S & S is looking to put together a ride this summer for charity.

The charity we will be supporting is the Ronald Mcdonald House, I have included the rough draft of the route and with Ron-ald Mcdonald House loving the idea, we just have to put everything into motion. We are looking to do a 7 - 9 day rideEdmonton,ABtoVancouverisland,BC and back with the hopes of picking up riders along the way and having returning groups from different locations so that not everyone has to do the whole ride ....... but will keep all informed as to when, right now the depart date is for the morning of August 2nd, 2014.

We are going to be setting up a website for the ride with lists for everyone to choose there route as well as setting up a donation link for the charity.

Also currently we are looking for sponsors as well to help make this happen and to help take away some of the costs if not all costs to riders.

So if anyone has any ideas let us know and hope to see you and your riders out there with us to hopefully make this one of the larger rides put on every year.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and hope you will join us this year and the many more to come

Sometimes, listening to the wind pushpastthetallfirintheforestbehind me, I think sounds like rushing water, cascading down the mountain..wild, free, but with purpose...

Sometimes I hear the wind rushing past my face when I take a corner just right, & I think it feels like silk, caressing my skin softly, gently, but with intent....

Sometimes, I see the water far below the road Im on, & watch it foam & spray over giant rocks that try to impede it & I think it must sound like the roar of agreat&fiercewind, tryingtoescapetheconfinesof the sky....much like my bike as I throttle to try & outrun the road some days...

Sometimes the lull of a still pool of water is enough to bring me to a stop & as the engine noise fades from the air, the water is already trickling gently throughmyfingersinquietcontemplationoftheartof being still...

Wind & water give me strength somehow. They lighten my soul on days where I have felt defeated.

I am of both elements & I thrive on them; they are essential to my wellbeing.

Riding provides both for my pleasure,... my sanity.

And sometimes I think out loud..How does it get any better than this?

How do you know who to trust?

A little boy walked down the beach, and as he did, he spied a matronly woman sitting under a beach umbrella on the sand.

He walked up to her and asked, Are you a Christian? Yes.

Do you read your Bible every day? She nodded her head, Yes.

Do you pray often? the boy asked next, and again she answered, Yes.

Withthatheaskedhisfinalquestion. Will you hold my quarter while I go swimming?

    Hes my brother...

A mother was preparing pancakes for her sons,

Jimmy 5, and Johnny 3. The boys began to argue overwhowouldgetthefirstpancake.

Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson. If Jesus were sitting here, He would say,Letmybrotherhavethefirstpancake,Icanwait.

Jimmy turned to his younger brother and said, Johhny , you be Jesus !

    No Shoving

A little girl, dressed in her Sunday best, was running as fast as she could, trying not to be late for Bible class.

As she ran she prayed, Dear Lord, please dont let me be late! Dear Lord, please dont let me be late!

While she was running and praying, she tripped on

a curb and fell, getting her clothes dirty and tearing her dress.

She got up, brushed herself off, and started running again.

As she ran she once again began to pray, Dear Lord, please dont let me be late...But!--please dont shove me either!

A 10 year old said I dont need a bath, cant you just Febreeze me.

Upon asking one of her preteen daughters to unload the dishwasher after dinner, the teenager asked her mom if there was anything less strenuous that she could do!

    ItsaboutOURRIGHTS

This time of year is hard for those of us that ride. We are often cranky, miserable and starting the countdown in days, hours, minutes and seconds till we can ride again. We can be found looking at motorcyclepartsandwaitingpatientlyforthefirstSwap Meet to happen. We work, look after our families, spend time with friends, talk about the rides we are going to do this coming riding season and dream of when the weather is barely warm enough and the roads are dry enough to ride safely again.

What we often arent doing is paying attention to what is happening to OUR RIGHTS as a motorcycle community. At least, this has been pretty much the history of what has happened in Saskatchewan until last February. Heck, in February 2012 our only license issuer (SGI) proposed an average increase of 30% to OUR COMMUNITYandWEasindividualridersDID NOTHING. Thats right NOTHING.

We only noticed in the spring of 2013 when we went to plate our bikes for the riding season. That was the history of us, the motorcycle community of Saskatchewan, noticing what SGI wasdoingwhenitwastoolate.Wecomplainedbut we did nothing when we had the chance in February April 2012. Why? Because NONE

OF US were paying attention. We didnt care, we werentinvolved.Afewtriedtowarnusbutwedidnt pay attention and simply did nothing.

That is, until February 2013. Even then, had SGI asked for another 30% averageincreasewouldwehavenoticed?Perhaps.

Perhaps not. Who knows what would have happened. We do know what DID happen.

SGI asked for an average increase of 72.6% and forthefirsttimesince2007wewokeup.SGIhad been lightly tapping us since 2007 with rate increases: 15% in July 2007; 25% in November 2009;and30%inAugust2012.andWE DID NOTHING.

Our rates went up by an average of 100% since 2012, at the same time next to nothing was done to create awareness or improve the safety of riders. Pretty one-sided and obvious that increasing rates was having zero impact on the real issue accidents and increasing claims.

It took SGI asking for an average of 72.6% increase to our rates, in February 2013, for us to start fightingforourrights.Untilthispointwejustcomplainedandrodeorwesold.Whatwedidntdo up till this point is stand-up for OUR RIGHTS.

Let that sink in for a moment

A whole community of riders that prides itself on standing up for the rights of others did nothing for themselves. WE DID NOTHING FOR OUR RIGHTS. Dont think our government didnt notice this.IttookSGIfinallyslugginguswitha2x4increase

of 72.6% for us to wake up and start fighting for ourselvesFOR OUR RIGHTS. We didnt waittillthawtodemonstratebyridingitwouldhave been too late. Instead, thanks to the media and a Facebook group page called Saskatchewan Motorcycle Owners Against the SGI Rate Increase we grabbed our own 2x4.

From the Facebook Group Page we formed R.A.G.E. Riders Against Government Exploitation.

    Volunteerswereaskedtostep-upandorganizethefight.Theydid.

With a solid Strategy and Action Plan things moved at a speed no one was prepared for. We rallied together UNITED and made sure each of our individual voices were heard. We all worked together for OUR RIGHTS.

The most wonderful thing in all of this is that R.A.G.E. didnt go away after the Rate Review Process ended. We have kept in contact with SGI, have been watching on behalf of the Motorcycle Community of Saskatchewan for OUR RIGHTS.

    Sothetimeisheretostand-upandfightforourrights again. WAKE UP!

Recommendations resulting from the Motorcycle Review Survey will be presented to the provincial government soon. Our government will be discussing what changes should be made to make us safer, to keep our rates in line, and what is best for the motorcycle community as a whole.

THESE ARE OUR RIGHTS! Do we want to leave the decisions up to those who would have let the average 72.6% increase go through? HELL NO!!! WAKE UP!

Thepoliticalprocessmeansweneedtodonowwhat we did for the last Rate Review. We, the motorcycle community of Saskatchewan need to stay UNITED and make our individual voices heard again. This time at all levels of our Provincial Government. How?

R.A.G.E. is organizing two Public Information Sessions to review the SGI Motorcycle Survey Results and Recommendations. We will be talking R.A.G.E. Strategy, Tactics and Action Plan so that once again our voices are heard

As the local thermometer dips below -56 I cant help but think of warm places.

At that temperature even winter sports and recreation grinds to a halt. Not many people hit the snowmobile trails or the slopes at that temperature.

It is all about survival. The slightest mistake could mean life or death. While I think nothing of riding in the summer without a helmet and in blue jeans and a muscle shirt, trips outside this week meant every part of skin is covered.

I watch the newscasts for across North America amused at the extreme cold they are dealing with. I think about taunting my new neighbours from Ireland by asking if they want to go out for ice cream or if I could at least bring them a Slurpee back on my next run. Poor souls. I havent seen them since the mercury dropped below freezing back in October.

I have friends who scold me for not liking winter. Warm sweaters, warm cups of cocoa by a roaringfire, yeslifewouldbeperfectifthatsallwinter was.

Unfortunately life goes on as it always does. There is food to get, snow to be shovelled and jobs worked to pay the bills. Ive done my share of days in 50 to 60 spending three hours in the howling wind unloading fuel. You can actually see the cold in the air. Some of my fortunate friends have long scurried off to
