Q’s Chunk of the Road By Quentin Kerfoot

The power of community is evident as this initiative ramps up.

This summer Fort Langley is hosting the first annual Ride into History, to make homelessness history.

This event promises to be a 3 day party for a worthy cause. Taking place July 27 – 29, you can ride or drive to the festivities while raising awareness and money for the Salvations Army’s Gateway of Hope Program.

Some months ago, local business owner Mark Smith of Western Power Sports approached Mayor Fassbender with an idea for a motorcycle

ride in the Langley’s and valley.

He was searching for a worthy cause to align this event with. It took but a few moments for Fassbender to suggest the Gateway of Hope Program, Continued on Page 2...

helping people at risk regain a sense of purpose and move forward with their lives.

Above: Lisa Torikka

On hand for the press conference was Lisa Torikka, homeless for over 10 years on Vancouver’s east side. Addicted to heroin & cocaine, she sold drugs and ended up incarcerated.

At rock bottom she discovered the Gateway program and with their ongoing support she is drug free, has completed a cooks training program and food safe course.

Lisa is working 3 jobs and now has her life on track.

Without their help she feels she would probably be dead.

There are many more success stories like hers as a result of this excellent program.

The success of this fund raising event will ensure this worthy program continues to convert the homeless to self supporting community members.

Fort Langley is the Traditional land of the Kwantlen Nation and the birth place of BC. So what better place to kick start a program which provides new starts for the homeless? They were on hand to sing the Kwantlen Journey song.

Realising that bikers like to acquire stuff, they wanted to create a logo to be something that people would want to buy and take pride wearing

for years to come.

Thursday’s press conference saw the unveiling of the official artwork for the event by local Kwantlen artist, Brandon Gabriel.

THE YIDDISH ZODIAC

The Year of: CHICKEN SOUP1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991,

2003You’re a healer, nourishing all whom you

encounter. We feel better just being in your presence. Mothers want to bring you home

to meet theirchildren -- resist this at all costs. Compatible with Bagel and Knish.

EGG CREAM1908, 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992,

2004You’ve got a devious personality, since you’re

made with neither eggs nor cream. Friends find your pranks refreshing; others think you’re too

frothy. Compatible with Blintz, who also has something to hide.

CHOPPED LIVER1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993,

2005People either love you or hate you, making you

wonder, “What am I, chopped liver?” But don’t get a complex; you’re always welcome at the

holidays! Bagel’s got your back.

BLINTZ1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994,

2006Creamy and dreamy, you’re rightfully cautious to travel in pairs. You play it coy, but word is that, with the right topping, you turn over morning, noon and night. Compatible with Schmear.

LATKE1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995,

2007Working class with a grating exterior, you’re a real softie on the inside. Kind of plain naked, but when

dressed up you’re a real dish. Compatible with Schmear’s cousin, Sour Cream.

BAGEL1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996,

2008You’re pliable and always bounce back, although

you feel something’s missing in your center. If this persists, get some therapy. Compatible withSchmear and Lox... Latke and Knish, not so much.

PICKLE1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997,

2009You’re the perfect sidekick: Friends love your salty wit and snappy banter, but you never overshadow them. That shows genuine seasoning from when you were a cucumber. Marry Pastrami later in life.

SCHMEAR1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998,

2010You blend well with others, but often spread

yourself too thin. A smooth operator, you could use some spicing up now and then. Compatible

with Bagel and Lox. Avoid Pastrami -- wouldn’t be kosher.

PASTRAMI1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999,

2011Brisket’s hipper sibling, always smokin’ and ready to party. You spice up life, even if you keep your

parents up at night. Compatible withPickle, who’s always by your side.

BLACK AND WHITE COOKIE1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000,

2012Kids love you, but make up your mind! Are you black or white? Cake or cookie? You say you’re

“New Age,” all yin & yang. We call it“bipolar.” Sweetie, you’re most compatible with

yourself.

KNISH1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001,

2013Flaky on the surface, you’re actually a person of depth and substance. Consider medical or law

school, but don’t get too wrapped up inyourself. Compatible with Pickle.

Avoid Lox, who’s out of your league.

LOX1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002,

2014Thin and rich, you’re very high maintenance: all you want to do is bask in the heat, getting some color. Consider retiring to Boca. Compatible with Bagel and Schmear, although you top them both.

Murphy’s Law? No. Mother in law’s Choice

Alexis, a young man, excitedly tells his mother he’s fallen in love and that he is going to get married. He tells her, ‘Ma, I’m going to bring over 3 women and you must try and guess which one I’m going to marry.’

The mother agrees. The next day, he brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them

down on the couch and they chat for a while.

Later, he says, ‘Okay Mother dear, guess which one I’m going to marry.’

She immediately replies, ‘The one on the right.’

‘That’s amazing, Ma. You’re correct. How did you know?’

The mother replies, ‘I don’t like her.’

A Legal LessonA lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff’s deputy. He thinks that he is smarter than the deputy because he has a better education.

He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the deputy’s expense. The deputy says, “License and registration, please.”

“What for?” the lawyer asks. The deputy says, “You didn’t come to a complete

stop at the stop sign.”

The lawyer says, “I slowed down, and no one was coming.”

The deputy says, “You still didn’t come to a complete stop. License and registration, please.”

“What’s the difference?” the lawyer asks. The deputy says, “The difference is that you have to come to a complete stop. That’s the law.”

The lawyer says, “If you can show me the legal difference between slowing down and stopping, then I’ll give you my license and registration and you can give me the ticket. If not, then you let me go with no ticket.”

The deputy is fine with this. “Exit your vehicle, sir,” he says. At this point, the deputy takes off his gloves and starts slapping the lawyer. “So,” he says, “do you want me to stop, or just slow down?”

The mortgage

penalty box

The potential cost of lending and blending

When you apply for a loan, the goal is to get the lowest interest rate possible. This logic also applies to mortgage loans. But is it always a good idea to refinance to get the lowest rate?

It’s almost guaranteed that you’ll run into

pre-payment charges that could offset any gains you might expect.

Why do I have to pay a pre-payment charge for refinancing my

mortgage? When your mortgage lender provided your fixed-rate loan to you, they matched your loan against a funding source that was available to them.

For example, if your mortgage term is for five years, the funds may have been sourced from the five-year term deposit of another client. Your lender has the obligation to pay the term deposit holder the agreed rate of interest for the entire five years. If interest rates have declined during that period and you seek to refinance your mortgage loan, your lender will not be able to replace your paid-out mortgage at the same rate, but will still have to pay the term deposit holder at the agreed interest rate.

The pre-payment charge is intended to compensate the lender for income they have lost and other costs associated with the early payout of your mortgage.

What kind of pre-payment charges can I expect to pay?

All major banks and mortgage lenders typically levy pre-payment charges of either the greater of 90 days interest or the Interest Rate Differential (IRD). The IRD is essentially the difference between your contract rate of interest and the lender’s current interest rate for the term remaining on your mortgage loan (re-investment rate). If mortgage rates for the term remaining on your mortgage are higher than your contract rate, the 90 day interest charge will generally apply. If interest rates are lower, the IRD will typically apply. The amount of the charge can be large, depending upon the difference in rates and the size of your mortgage. It’s a good idea to consult your mortgage lender and ask for a direct quote prior to making a decision to payout or refinance your mortgage loan.

When can it pay to refinance my mortgage?

If you are within the first three years of a five year term, the impact of blending your existing mortgage interest rate into a new rate and extending the term portion of your new loan may prove to be a wash “ no win, no loss.”

However, it is possible to take advantage of a lower rate if you are planning to refinance and add significantly to your mortgage amount. In this situation, the new, lower rate would apply to all of the “new money” portion and the extended term portion of your new loan. The effect is that your blended interest rate becomes significantly lower.

Refinancing your mortgage might be the right cost-saving move for you. But to be sure you’re getting the best value, talk to us first.

Yes, we do mortgages too!Come see us for advice and information on selecting the right mortgage at the right rate.

Yamaha Teams Up with Motopark!

For Immediate Release – Yamaha Motor Canada and Motopark have joined forces to give riders the full off-road experience at Canada’s longest serving motocross facility, with Yamaha now being the exclusive rental bike at the famed track.

Riders can rent a Yamaha of their choice at the Chatsworth, Ontario track. With trail bikes as small as the electric starting TTR50E all the way up to the YZ250F for the more experienced motocross rider. Iain Hayden and Zeb Dennis, Motopark’s President and

head instructor, will be on the championship winning YZ450F for teaching, racing and of course, just having fun.

PR Specialist and Race Director Bryan Hudgin said “Yamaha always looks to be involved at the grassroots level. What excited us about Motopark is the facility and the opportunities riders have here.

Riders can come for the weekend and take lessons or riding schools, while having accommodations available as well. Iain’s made some big changes to the track and it’s been for the better. If you’ve never rode before, Motopark is a fantastic place to try a

Thunder Lizard Lips OffBy R. Jeff LeGrand

I ride with the

Motorcycle Ride for

DadIt’s a beautiful thing, this nice weather, this motorcycling opportunity.

I honestly thought I might achieve a sunburn in April! I’ve really enjoyed riding so far this season, as I’m sure the rest of you are doing.

But every time I pull the bike out and look her over for spring, changing oil, checking and changing fluids, etc, etc, I go past all the Ride for Dad stickers and stuff, and I remember... not only do I have fun, I manage to do some good with my bike. That just doesn’t suck.

I try not to harp on the Ride for Dad thing.. it would be too easy to talk about it constantly, update you all on the minutiae of organizing the event, but you’d be sick of it by Ride Day. However, I do enjoy the work I do with them, and I love the event, not to mention respecting the cause and the charity.

Some of you will recall that I had a scare with Prostate Cancer last year... which naturally made the cause more dear to me. And I know that there are those out there who have taken something away with them to help them in their own battle against the disease.. and if I’ve helped you at all, if I’ve made you smile at a bad time, or kept you from feeling alone for one minute, then every ounce of the hundreds of hours of volunteering

has been put to good purpose.

The Calgary edition of the Ride for Dad is June 16th this year. Once again, the City of Calgary, our many supporters and volunteers, Law Enforcement, the venues.. they’re all coming together to try and make this one even bigger and better.

Bill Brooks will be our Celebrity Ride Captain, and that’s not to mention our huge top level sponsors, like communications giant Telus and media giant Belt Drive Betty! (Belt Drive Betty is a MAJOR national sponsor, and I’m not kidding. We love you, Renee!)

We’ve got a great day lined up, starting out from the Max Bell Arena, (our starting point and home base for the past several years,) then heading out on the actual parade.. which, for the second year in a row will feature a chance to be part of shutting down the Southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail for about a quarter of an hour. Last year I had to forgo the parade, and I didn’t get to participate in that bit of fun.

This year?

I made sure I have enough help to be able to ride.

Then, the poker run, through various parts of the area around Calgary, and featuring an all new

route this year, and this runs about 2 hours (at the speed limit. we endorse safety!)

We end up at the Springbank Park for All Seasons again, just south of Calaway Park.. and if you haven’t seen that place, you owe it to yourself to check it out.. amazing venue, and they treat us so astoundingly well!

There, we’ll have the live music, auctions, food, comedy, and the big draw for the West Jet prize... which is again an amazing return trip for two anywhere they fly! (Tickets are available from your Calgary Ride for Dad Executive.. look for us in the community).

If you want more details, route maps, info on our amazing musical act this year (we’ve really lucked out) or anything else, please visit http://www.motorcycleridefordad.org/chapters/calgary or connect with us on Facebook through Calgary Motorcycle Ride for Dad.

We’d love to take this ride and make it truly huge, and I love meeting readers and riders from all over.Continued On Page 16...

The Magician and the parrot

A magician worked on a cruise ship. The audience was different each week, so the magician did the same tricks over and over again.

There was one problem. The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shouting in the middle of the show “Look, it’s not the same hat!” or, “Look, he’s hiding the flowers under the table,” or “Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?”

The magician was furious, but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captain’s parrot.

Then the ship sank. The magician found himself on a piece of wood in the middle of the sea with, as fate would have it, the parrot. They stared at each other with hatred, but did not utter a word. This went on for a day and then another and then another. Finally on the fourth day, the parrot could not hold back and said, “OK, I give up. Where’s the F#$%K*@g ship?”

From the Depths of File 13...

This has been a wild and woolly week for myself and our little team but also in the news.

On the team front, our new Rider Friendly U™ is getting ready to

launch with it’s first training courses for hotels and motels! The course is taught in a series of really short modules with questions after every module, once the whole course has been taken, the staffer of the hotel/motel will be given a Rider Friendly U™ Certificate, saying they have passed the course in how to be Rider Friendly® as it pertains to hotels and motels.

Over time we will be adding other modules for campgrounds, B & B’s, gas station/convenience stores and different kinds of attractions.

We are also working on our upgrading our classified ads, Rider Friendly Business Association® online phone book, riding club modules and the Canadian Riders Support Network, Newspaper Subscriptions and more! The new Busted Knuckle Chronicles© online should be going live soon as well - yes, we have been a busy bunch and it shows no sign of letting up any time soon!

In the news, well, let’s just say it’s been a busy and strange week. We have seen Brett McCormick break his neck in a crash in Holland, the Saskatchewan native and Superbike Champion is said to be doing well.

Then there was an article from TMZ all about how MTV and Rob Dyrdek, Fantasy Factory host and owner of Young & Reckless clothing are being

sued by the Hells Angels.

Here’s why they are being sued:Yah think the Angels may have cause to be pissed that not only was their Death Head - a REGISTERED Trademark was blatantly copied, BUT it was also allowed to appear on MTV - I wonder if MTV is going to fire their legal council - I also wonder if Mr. Dyrdek is going to find himself jobless & business less? The next burning question I have - HOW MUCH MOOLA are the Angels going to end up netting from this major faux pas? The defence fund will get a nice little shot in the arm I think! Stupid is as stupid does I guess!

Another tid bit in the news that is going to be interesting to follow is all about a traffic stop in Waynesville MO., Where in four soldiers who belong to an AMA sanctioned 3 piece patch holding club called the Underground Riders MC.

They have filed a formal complaint over a roadside check that took place April 14th.

Begin Quote: The soldiers allege that during the traffic stop, an officer used a cell phone to take pictures of their faces and their patches.Marcum, president of the club, said he was told to hold his vest up so photos could be taken. The soldiers also allege that information was passed on to their chain of command implying they are engaged in gang activities.

Marcum and the other soldiers deny that accusation.

Marcum said he felt as if they were targeted because they were bikers and the feeling was reinforced by the behavior of the officer they filed the complaint against.

All four soldiers said the officer was abusive, insulting and threatening. A video taken by the soldiers on a cell phone is difficult to make out the images due to lighting but the audio indicates the officer referred to the soldiers as “trash” and told them to stay out of his town. End Quote.

Which leads to the next article that appeared in the news regarding police officers.

This one out of right here in Canada! The Toronto Star article deals with how few times officers who lie, fabricate and or conceal evidence are actually reprimanded.

The Star investigation turned up 120 officers who have been accused by JUDGES, of outright lying and misleading the courts and that most of the officers involved have gone unpunished.

Now there are some who think that because there are some 89,000 police & peace officers in Canada that the number is insignificant, but remember, this is only one report. If you go the RCMP Watch - Who’s Holding them Accountable site - or in our news feeds on www.beltdrivebetty.com under Good Cop or Bad Cop No Donut section of the Law & Politics News Category, you will see that there are many, many more cases that what the Star uncovered.

On top of the deceiving the courts complaints levelled by the Star, there are hundreds of female police officers who are suing the RCMP over sexual discrimination. There are literally hundreds of officers on trial for everything from drinking and driving to spousal abuse.

Now don’t get me wrong, I get that these are human beings, I get that they have not, from everything Continued on Page 22 ...

I read and hear, had the most extensive of training, and I would NOT want their job for all of the tea in China, HOWEVER, they signed up to serve and protect, they singed up knowing that they would be held to a higher standard than the rest of society and yet, time after time we hear about how the top brass does not discipline their officers, the internal investigations seem to be a disaster and the judicial system appears to be broken. What are the answers, well I have none, but I do have a ton of questions - how about you?

In Australia a veteran’s group is disgusted with the new Anti Bikie laws and says that it is a kick in the teeth to the 110,000 service personnel who have lost their lives in the name of freedom.

Begin Quote: “It’s very embarrassing to sit there and watch politicians talk about freedom and respect and the memory of our fallen soldiers and for them to be involved in radical legislation like this.”The VMCWA, which has about 25 members, is a social group for former members of the Australian Defence Force.

“We do a lot more than just ride bikes - we’re active in the community, do community service work and fund raising events,” said Mr Buchanan, who has served in the Royal Australian Navy and as a reservist.

He said the laws would do little to curb the activities of criminal organizations and he feared some groups and organizations could be unfairly hit by the legislation.

“Will it stop organizations such as ourselves from meeting? That’s the intention of these laws and that’s the end result of what they want to do,” he said.

“It’s law and order propaganda by the WA Government, it’s what it can turn into and evolve into that’s the biggest concern.

It’s not hard to meet expenses, they’re everywhere.

“These laws are wide sweeping, they’re not just for bikies.”

Attorney-General Christian Porter said the Criminal Organization Control Bill aimed to destroy the core operations of outlaw motorcycle gangs and other criminal organizations in WA.

He said there was “no conceivable way” the laws would affect groups which did not engage in criminal activity.

“This legislation provides the right balance in terms of giving our police and justice system the tools they need to fight organized crime, as well as ensuring groups who do not engage in criminal activity are not caught by the anti-association provisions,” he said.

Under the legislation, members of a group could be banned from associating once a court had declared the group a criminal organization.

Lobby group Search for Your Rights spokeswoman Pearl Lim described the laws as draconian and said they did not contain enough checks and balances to prevent an abuse of power.

“These types of laws have not been proven to work in any other jurisdiction, including NSW and Queensland,” she said.

“They are overly restrictive and harsh and when association can even include the sending of a Christmas card, it should be a concern.” End Quote.

There are many more articles that have been in the news feeds all in the same vein as these, bad/knee jerk reaction laws that take away freedoms, bad judgments by many from law enforcement to business people...I guess, we are all just humans but I really do wonder at what’s going on out There...things appear a little crazier than normal!

I would love to hear your thoughts on all of the

topics that I have brought up - it is only through sharing ideas and having sincere and thoughtful dialogue that we might find some solutions to the challenges our community and humanity face.

Until next week, I am your editor, Belt Drive Betty.PLEASE RIDE SAFELY - we have already lost enough lives of riders this year and the season hasn’t officially even begun yet!

A Ground Up Build

There is a lot of satisfaction building a motorcycle from the ground up.

There is no blueprint, no plan, (and often no instruction with parts) for how the

bike goes together.

You get carried away during the mock up as hours slip away. It is late at night and everyone else has turned in for the day, you’re in the garage elbow deep in your build, a neglected beer on the workbench, AC/DC’s “Ride On” comes over the stereo.

Your dog twitches chasing a rabbit in his dreams by the door. The smell of oil and gasoline in the air, the hum of a welder waiting to lay down a bead as soon as you get everything just right. It is these hours, days, even months that we spend mocking up the bike to make sure everything is just right for when everything finally comes back from painting, plating and polishing that we relish.

But the day comes when everything has to go together one last time. It is never as simple as slipping everything back into place.

There are always changes, always extra care not chip, scratch or dent. Build up of paint, powder coat and other finishes.

You have to carefully grind away, sand away so that it will go back together just as it did hundreds of times during mock up.

That is where I am now in my build. After years of collecting parts, mock-ups, changes, and

modifications my bike is back from paint and I’m in the midst of final assembly.

For the most part everything has gone together as planned. My only hic ups the first day was forgetting to install the drive belt with the swingarm belt – ironic in the fact I was taking pictures of the process for an article I’m planning on writing.

Step one. Make sure to install the drive belt with the pivot. So as I moved to put on the rear tire I was sent back to square one. With my belt woes were the expected build-up of paint on some bolts and frame holes.

Still after a handful of hours I had a rolling chassis with my motor and transmission in place.

That is where my second day started wrong. As I bolted on the open primary motor plate I checked the final drive belt to find it was dangerously close to the build-up of paint on the swingarm.

Simply repositioning the spacers shifted the belt over enough to clear only to discover that it now interfered with the lower transmission plate.

Neither was a problem during mock up but now I am scrambling to thread a belt through a narrow

passage with out damaging paint.

I’ve managed to get clearance on the transmission plate by lowering my suspension. It is a frustrating way to spend an evening especially after double and triple checking during mock up.

But it is one of the things that gives a satisfaction that I can’t explain.

-bad Uncle Monkey

SISTERS OF ST.FRANCIS HOUSE OF PROSTITUTION NEXT RIGHT; his instinct gets the best of him and he pulls into the drive....

On the far side of the parking lot is a stone building with a small sign next to the door reading: SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS He locks his bike, climbs the steps and rings the bell....The door is answered by a nun in a long black habit who asks, “What may we do for you, my son?”....

He answers, “I saw your signs along the highway, and was interested in possibly doing business.”....

“Very well, my son. Please follow me,” ....He is led through many winding passages and is soon quite disoriented....The nun stops at a closed door and tells the man, “Please knock on this door”....

He does as he is told and another nun in a long habit, holding a tin cup answers the door.....This nun instructs, “Please place $100 in the cup, then go through the large wooden

Race with a Harley

I raced a Harley today and after some really hard riding I managed to PASS the guy. I was riding on one of those really, really twisting sections of mountain road with no straight sections to speak of and where most of the bends have warning signs that say “MAX SPEED 50 KPH”.

I knew if I was going to pass one of those monsters with those big-cubic-inch motors, it would have to be a place like this where handling and rider skill are more important than horsepower alone. I saw the guy up ahead as I exited one of the turns and knew I could catch him, but it wouldn’t be easy. I concentrated on my

braking and cornering. Three corners later, I was on his mudguard. Catching him was one thing; passing him would prove to be another. Two corners later, I pulled up next to him as we sailed down the mountain.

I think he was shocked to see me next to him, as I nearly got by him before he could recover. Next corner, same thing. I’d manage to pull up next to him as we started to enter the corners but when we came out he’d get on the throttle and out-power me. His horsepower was almost too much to overcome, but this only made me more determined than ever.

My only hope was to out-brake him. I held off squeezing the lever until the last instant. I kept my nerve while he lost his. In an instant I was by him. Corner after corner, I could hear the roar of his engine as he struggled to keep up. Three more miles to go before the road straightens out and he would pass me for good.

But now I was in the lead and he would no longer hold me back. I stretched out my lead and by the time we reached the bottom of the canyon, he was more than a full corner behind. I could no longer see him in my rear-view mirror.

Once the road did straighten out, it seemed like it took miles before he passed me, but it was probably just a few hundred yards. I was no match for that kind of horsepower, but it was done. In the tightest section of road, where bravery and skill count for more than horsepower and deep pockets, I had passed him.

Though it was not easy, I had won the race to the bottom of the mountain and I had preserved the proud tradition of one of the best bits of Brit iron.

I will always remember that moment. I don’t think I’ve ever pedaled so hard in my life. And, some of the credit must go to Raleigh cycles, as well. They really make a great bicycle...(Unknown author)

Our Nation’s Pride: Canada’s Peacekeeping Efforts

by Elizabeth Miller

Canada has been known as a peacekeeping nation since 1947, when the United Nations was first formed. For over fifty years, Canadian Forces have been teaming up with 185 countries to help maintain world peace.

Canada has been involved in every UN peacekeeping mission since it was first started, which is the record. Canada has also been involved in seven peacekeeping missions that the UN hasn’t organized. Canada, as a nation, is very devoted to peacekeeping, and that makes me proud to be Canadian.

Peacekeeping is defined as, “the nonbelligerent use of military force to assist warring parties in reaching a settlement.” Peacekeepers have many different operations that they perform, such as protection of civilians and maintaining supplies. They also can provide humanitarian relief, monitor human rights practices, and supervise elections.

The United Nations is an international organization of countries created to promote world peace and cooperation. The UN was formed after the Second World War ended, in 1947. It was put in place to help develop good relations between countries, promote cooperation in solving the world’s problems, and encourage respect for human rights. In 1994, the UN had gone on 35 peacekeeping missions. The UN settles disputes peacefully; they don’t use force against other countries, and they won’t help any nation that opposes the UN.

The Canadian Force’s most important

responsibility is to defend Canada if it is ever under a military attack. The Canadian Forces help our Canadian citizens whose lives are in danger due to an environmental disaster. They help maintain order if there is a riot or any civil unrest within Canada’s borders. The Canadian Forces defend Canada’s borders and they patrol Canadian waters. They are also the people who go on the peacekeeping missions.

Canada has shown many times that it is a peaceful nation and doesn’t think differences should be resolved by war. We have shown this by all the time and money that we put into the UN and our peacekeeping efforts. We have lost many good men due to our effort of peacekeeping. We need to keep concentrating on world peace, and try to obtain it. To do this, the whole world needs to be committed to fighting against war.

When I think of Remembrance Day, I think of all the soldiers who have died, trying to keep the peace. It makes me think of all the soldiers who are trying, right now, to make peace between nations.

This Remembrance Day, there will be still more to remember. American “friendly fire” killed five Canadian soldiers this year. Veterans, who have been to war, know what it is like. They understand how important it is to establish peace so we won’t have another war. Veterans do their part to stop war and promote peace.

On Remembrance Day, we not only need to remember those who have lost their lives, but also those who still want world peace and who are doing something to get it.

A Cop’s Perspective: Cool Cops Out,

Bad Cops InBy William Perry

I don’t know how the police saga is playing out in the rest of the country, but Quebec has dominated local news reports for weeks.

And, as is common with police brutality (or should I say involuntary abuse) cases, the aftermath in Quebec has culminated with good old fashion riots. You see, I understand there will be fault on both sides.

Naturally of course, the actual rioters consist of a mix: a few over-privileged, some genuinely struggling students, anarchists and those ever-present opportunists whose motivation for rioting lay more toward scoring notches on their idiot sticks rather than any actual outrage concerning the perceived injustice. But with all the excitement, one lingering question still comes to mind: whatever happened to cool cops?

You know the kind who would visit your elementary school class when you were a kid and hand out free candy or if you were lucky enough, let you hold their gun or wear their hat. Whatever happened to those cops?

Sometimes it can seem like the only ones left completed their training a Shawshank.

The Stanley Cup riot trials got me thinking about

how much power police officers can have over us citizens, even those on legal footing, eg: right to assemble. There are many things cops have the right to do that seem downright unfair, and I don’t mean just commandeering liquor. There are some of the oddest overbearing police powers in this country. I can give you my list of four. Why only four of them you ask and not a traditional number like five or six? Because a list of four is irreverent and an attention grabber, as evidenced by you reading this entire column. So you are likely thinking: Is it OK to monitor Police? Thinking of course you want to get them honest and law abiding.

You bet!

I understand your reluctance not believing me, particularly given the Conservative’s approach to creating community spirit. Here in BC, the land of the Cup riots, exists an ever-shrinking confidence in the BC Liberal government or dare I say, Conservative Light, including their unwillingness to actually utilize the Independent Police Monitor they hired. It’s frustrating? Tell me about it.

Like clockwork, it seems like every month another story comes out about law enforcement abusing their powers or making mistakes in general.

Before I continue I should remind readers that I am a retired cop.

Why would I comment on my former profession you may well ask.

Well simply because I know we do, as a profession, mess up, and it is OK to admit that.

The less than flattering stories about police are almost a permanent fixture for most local news

networks. And unlike the constant stream of love directed toward firefighters, people in general are more wary of the boys and girls with firearms.

So much so that entire websites, blogs, Facebook accounts have sprung up dedicated to watching the cops tasked with watching over the public. One blog recently caught my attention because the blogger running it is currently offering $100 to the best police video submitted to the site.

The rules for submission are simple, just film a cop conducting their duties and the best one wins. The money offered is paltry, but the blog post highlights an interesting dilemma, one that is especially ripe in

confusion and uncertainty in our internet age: Is it legal to film police?

The short answer is yes, but with exceptions which we’ll get into later.

What’s important to note first is that this question of legality is poignant not just because it delves into the legal aspects of our Charter rights, but because it really is Continued on Page 31...

The Busted Knuckle Chronicles May 3rd, 2012A Cop’s Perspective Page 32

Page 33: The Busted Knuckle Chronicles May 3rd, 2012

Continued from Page 30...

a question addressing the means in which we as Canadian citizens may employ to ensure our own safety.

As noted earlier, websites about police preventing people from recording police activity are all over the internet, and issues of police brutality and violence seem like an unfortunate constant.

Furthermore, with the proliferation of personal recording devices in the form of cell phones, laptops, iPods, and security cameras, it’s hard to go anywhere these days without having your image caught in one form or another.

But getting back to the initial question posed by Moi - it’s generally legal to record police or in fact anyone at all with or without their consent.

However, please, please take note of the fact that “generally” doesn’t mean “always” because there are limits to this rule.

Laws regarding recording, whether by audio, video, photography, or a by combination of these forms can vary. Certainly a cop’s interpretation does. But typically, if you want to record a police officer, you can do it as long as you’re conducting the recording in a public place. Not the men’s room...kapish?

This rule applies to recording non-law enforcement, as well, (hence the popularity and continued existence of TMZ or even sometimes CTV - Hey Hudson.

This means, if a cop pulls you over in a public

street for speeding, you’d be in your right to record your transaction with the officer.

But say for instance, if police are investigating a murder scene in someone’s private house, a private citizen wouldn’t be able to waltz in and start recording the event unless they were authorized to do so (such as in the case of some press photographers).

Even if the police tape is not up, stay out.

Basically you can record as long as you are not interfering with the officer performing their duty.

If you happen to witness an officer using force against someone, keep recording and call 911.

Although you don’t know the details of the incident, the individual who is on the receiving end of the force will likely need medical attention.

And it never hurts to document matters.

So what should you do if you want to record a cop? Well, before you do it or end up in a situation where you feel inclined to, check your federal laws on police surveillance.

And if you’re still nervous about it, you can always just ask for permission from the officer or person you’re planning to record prior to recording them. This can be done directly or by simply announcing that you’re in a possession of a live recording device. This is a good tip to consider, especially if you’re planning to try to win that $100.”

Dear Fellow Rider (s): We are from Ontario, Canada, an awesome

motorcycling destination. However, we are currently being discriminated against by several Cities in the form of noise bylaws specifically aimed at bikes. If you ride a 4 or 5 cylinder bike, and your pipes are louder than 100 dcb at 5000 RPM

(and yes, they can hold you til they get someone to come put on a tach and test your bike), you may be subject to Noise Bylaw fines of up to $25,000.00 Currently the two towns are Caledon and Oakville Ontario, with several others looking to join in if it proves viable in these towns. For your own sake. We ask you to avoid riding through these

areas if possible during any trips you may be planning to this area. For our sakes, we ask you not to spend your money in these areas, perhaps we can prove to them that their prejudice against the motorcycling public comes at a cost. We Thank you for your support.Motorcyclists of Ontario In support of fair laws

The College of Piping & Celtic Performing Arts of Canada

to be Showcased During ATLANTICADE

SUMMERSIDE(PE) – May 2, 2012 – The Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival is very pleased to announce that The College of Piping & Celtic Performing Arts of Canada will be exposing their talents to both the public and participates during the 6th annual event being held from June 28th to July 2nd in Prince Edward Island.

The College of Piping & Celtic Performing Arts took roots in Summerside back in 1980 and today has grown to be a premiere cultural tourism destination on PEI.

A 600 seat outdoor amphitheatre has become an extension of the classroom where aspiring performers have the opportunity to showcase their talents to the public.

The College’s student body now numbers about 350 students in addition to 200 summer school and workshop participants. There is a strong connection to PEI where 45% of the people have their origins in Scotland and 25% of Islanders are descended from settlers who came out of Ireland.

The highlight of the summer months at the College is the weekly showing of “Highland Storm” featuring a cast of over 30 who delight the audience with a high energy production of Celtic music and dance.

In fact “Highland Storm” only opens for the 2012 season on Tuesday – July 3rd but the College will put on a special performance to end of ATLANTICADE on Monday evening July 2nd at 7:30.

In addition admission to this performance will only be $16 (as opposed to the normal $32) and ATLANTICADE VIP registered guests will receive free admission with the showing of their VIP braclet at the door.

Those attending the motorcycle festival will get a taste of what to expect as College performers will be involved in the Opening Ceremonies, the dinner runs to Slemon Park, the cultural performance on the main stage and the Canada Day Parade during July 1st celebrations.

“We are very pleased to be involved with Atlanticade and looking forward to meeting people from all over North America” says College executive director Karen Hatcher. “I can’t wait to see all the motorcycles roll into our town. It should be a great event”.

Chairman Dale Hicks is equally excited to have the College members perform at various times throughout the event and says the July 2nd special performance will be a great way to finish of the five day festival.

“For sure there will be a number of our participants still around on Monday evening so it will be a great way to relax and take some great entertainment on the final day”.

NEW 2012 BRUTALE RR Wednesday April 25, 2011 (Boucherville, QC) MV Agusta Canada model line-up is renewed with the release of the 2012 BRUTALE RR.

Maximum performance without compromise, this is the creed of the new Brutale RR 1090. The Brutale RR 1090 is the most important addition to the Brutale 2012 line-up, it is an absolute missile capable of exceptional performance and a level of handling that makes all other naked bikes pale by comparison. The 1078cc four-cylinder engine with radial intake and exhaust valves offers the highest power output ever by a Brutale. New camshafts, new intake tracts, new throttle bodies (same bore diameter as the F4) all contribute to the record power level of 116,5 kW (156 hp) at 11.900 rpm. This engine is simply extraordinary and capable of satisfying even the most demanding rider thanks to the addition of the slipper clutch, new engine mapping and traction control with 8 levels of intervention.

The chassis of the MV Agusta Brutale RR 1090 is worthy of an authentic superbike without fairings, the ultra-light CrMo (chromium-molybdenum) steel tube chassis that is hand welded (TIG) with adjustable steering geometry that allows the rider to adapt the geometry to their personal needs. Logically, a superbike needs to have the best suspension available: Marzocchi 50mm USD front forks with DLC coating and dedicated valving for the Brutale RR 1090 together with a Sachs single shock with high and low speed compression adjusters along with rebound and spring pre-load adjusters. Completing the high level of components are

the brakes and wheels: Brembo monobloc front brake calipers (the same as on the hypersport F4RR) with 320mm rotors as well as forged aluminum wheels that weight over 1kg less that cast wheels and help reduce the unsprung mass.

The new Brutale RR 1090 offers an extremely high level of fit and finish including a projector beam headlight with incorporated LED position lights, LED front turn signals incorporated into the rear-view mirrors and LED rear turn signals. The Brutale RR 1090 is available in 3 color combinations: America, Red/Silver and Matte Magno Grey/Matte Black all for the price of $19,995.00 (Delivery, Preparation and Taxes extra) with availability by April 2012 in all our authorized dealerships.

Matthew 5:11–1211 “God blesses you when peo ple mock you and per se cute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my fol low ers.12 Be happy about it! Be very glad! For a great reward awaits you in heaven. And remem ber, the ancient prophets were per se cuted in the same way.

Per se cu tion

This is one of those pas sages that is so easy to toss around.

Peo ple mis un der stand it all the time, and use it as jus ti fi ca tion for their stu pid, un-Christlike behaviour.

Okay, so that was harsh! But, true.

I’m amazed at how some peo ple will be incred i bly mean and judge men tal to oth ers, and when they are crit i cized for it, they quote this verse and sug gest that their “per se cu tion” is evi dence that they are doing the right thing. Baloney!

Most “Chris tians” are hated because they don’t act like Jesus.

They stand on street cor ners with signs telling peo ple that God hates them, or they make silly state ments about people’s lifestyle choices, or they look down their noses at

those who are dif fer ent.

They don’t demon strate love, com pas sion, or grace.

Will there be times when we are per se cuted because we refuse to com pro mise on our faith?

Absolutely.

Jesus makes it clear in this pas sage that it will hap pen.

But the per se cu tion won’t come because we’re attack ing oth ers. It will come because we refuse to attack oth ers.

The per se cu tion will come from those who don’t under stand how we can “love those people.”

My prayer: Lord, help me to love as you loved. Help me to be will ing to stand against injus tice even if it means being per se cuted by those who don’t under stand rad i cal grace. Amen.

Motorcycle Buying Tips For Beginners - Cruiser, Sport-Touring, Scooter,

Dual-Sport, or Sport-Bike

With so many choices in motorcycles, selecting your first motorcycle can be challenging. Here are a few tips to help you select the right motorcycle for you.

What type motorcycle should you purchase?

There are at least eight different motorcycle types (styles) of motorcycles: touring, sport-touring, standard, sport-bike, scooter, dual-sport, dirt-bike, and cruiser.

Many new riders begin their search by looking at Harley Davidson motorcycles. Don’t make this mistake. While cruisers are extremely popular they don’t necessarily make the best beginner motorcycle. They’re heavy, loud, expensive, and unforgiving (loaded with chrome) of minor spills.

Touring motorcycles are generally built for long distance riding. Examples include the popular Honda Gold Wing GL1800, Road Glide CVO, and the BMW K1200. These motorbikes are heavy, powerful, expensive, and require significant skills to operate properly... making them a poor choice for new riders.

Sport-bikes (also referred to as crotch-rockets) are built for speed, agility, and performance. They’re light weight, brightly colored, and quick. Engine sizes for sport-bikes usually range from 600cc to 1000cc.

Note: Don’t let a smallish sounding 600cc engine fool you. A Honda CBR600 sport-bike can run circles around an 1800cc v-twin cruiser. Crotch rockets can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds! That’s faster than 99% of all production sports cars.

Do sport-bikes make good beginner bikes? Probably not, unless you have the maturity to handle the temptations of power, speed, and agility.

The next style of motorcycle is pretty easy to describe. Dirt-bikes are made to ride off-road. Tread patterns and suspension components on dirt-bikes are very different than their street-bike cousins.

While many models have headlights and turn signals, most won’t easily accommodate interstate travels. If you have convenient access to dirt roads or other off-road areas, a dirt-bike is a good beginner motorcycle.

Don’t have easy access to off-road areas? Consider a dual-sport motorcycle. These bikes are made to accommodate moderate off-road conditions, and handle highway speeds. A compromise of sorts, they don’t perform on-road as well as street bikes, nor off-road as well as dirt-bikes.

But, most dual-sport models can easily travel at interstate speeds and handle moderate off-road conditions. When you take that motorcycle tour (you’ve been dreaming about) to the Northern tip of Alaska, you’ll most likely be riding a dual-sport motorcycle, like the popular Kawasaki KLR650 or the BMW R1200GSA.

A standard motorcycle is an older style that once described the majority of bikes available... hence the term ‘standard’. Standard motorcycles are generally upright and moderately priced. Picture that 1970s bike your dad owned. It was most likely a standard motorcycle. While not the fanciest or flashiest bike, standard bikes can be good starter motorcycles.

Scooters? Before you form an opinion here, visit your local motorcycle dealership. Gone are the 50cc mopeds of the 1970s. Instead, several new scooters fancy large 650cc engines and automatic transmissions. With a top speed of over 100 mph, and a 0 to 60 acceleration time below 5 seconds, scooters can keep up with most anything. Want to embarrass a Harley rider or Mustang owner... no problems? A Honda Silver Wing 650 scooter can do both.

Do scooters handle like motorcycles. Sure. Do

they operate easily on Highways? Yes, as long as they are 150cc or more. Do they make good beginner bikes? Why not?

A sport-touring motorcycle is the last style of motorcycle addressed here. Sport-touring models are sporty versions of touring bikes. Or conversely, relaxed versions of sport-bikes. This class of motorcycle falls between a touring bike and sport-bike.

The sport-touring class was designed as a balance between ergonomics, engine performance, and long range touring capabilities. It’s a popular class of motorcycle that combines the best of both worlds. The Honda VFR Interceptor 800, Triumph Sprint ST, and Yamaha FJR 1300 are examples of popular sport-touring motorcycles. Most models utilize 650cc to 1300cc engines.

Do sport-touring motorcycles make good first bikes? They can. Most, however, are relatively heavy... utilizing high performance engines and creature comforts like hard rear storage bags.

Before you select a sport-touring model, make sure you have the discipline to use only the power that matches your skill level.

For answers to other complex questions like: “What size engine can a beginning rider safely handle?” Talk to as many of the dealers as you can. They have unique perspectives, and can provide recommendations and advice on how a new rider should select their first motorcycle.

Whether you are new to motorcycling or want to improve your current riding skills, it pays to sign up for a Motorcycle Riding workshop.

Still not sure? I own three motorcycles able to satisfy my every riding need. “

Early season: Delights and Nightmares

This year circumstances have forced my hand and I had to take an early trip with the missus or get no extened bike trip.

So on the 14th of April we pushed off on a two week

odyssey that has included Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Cleveland and then back thru ohio, west Virginia, Pennsylvania, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, before we make it home to Nova Scotia again.

We have had some great early season riding but you must dress for it. Lots of layers and heated gear help but you have to be very careful. Also you must keep a real eye on the weather. We blew through Somerrset Pa and eight hours later the snow started to fall and twelve hours later there was a foot of snow. It was really freaky watching that on the news the next morning. But that was not the scariest.

We awoke in North Conway New Hampshire and it was a sunny eight degrees. Should have been no problems. And their wasn’t, but it could have gotten real ugly.

A mere 40 miles north it was minus eight and freezing fog. (Read nothing but black ice and serious two wheel danger).

We re routed and found a much warmer route but I found out my GPS loves Banjo music. So the big takeaway, check your

weather closely and have alternates or plan on losing a few days on the road. As I write we are storm stayed in Bangor since it is pouring rain and very cold.

It did however provide the chance on this trip to visit the Whitehorse Gear Warehouse in North Conway. If you want to know what a die hard rider lives for it is here. Not bikes, parts or tires. Nope, everything else under the sun. Clothes, Warm weather gear, Cold weather gear and just about every other Doo-dad that you can ever imagine.

We had been wearing Schampas Pharoahs hoods and the Missus added a underlayer top. This gear is light weight, form fitting and warm. It has what a rider loves and needs.

If you are not sure then give it a whirl. There is also another benefit to the early season riding in New Hampshire and Vermont. Before all the trees get all their leaves you can see much deeper into the woods and see things that are obscured by the vegetation a month later.

Note to self: frost heaves are not fun. So pay asttention, drive the conditions and dress for the weather.

So beyond the basic trip planning and dress, plan for extra stops for coffee and warming up. If you are used to 150 km hops, try 90. Your body will love you.

On a very unrelated to motorcycling note, but at the heart of the biker culture is respect.

I want you all to consider checking out an organization called V.E.T.S Canada. They are the veterans emergency transition services who are helping address the sad issue of veterans homelessness.

Check out their facebook page. Like them. They have donors who will donate cash for support by doing just this. They fought so you can ride in peace. Please consider helping so that they can live in it. Over the next few weeks you will hear me rail, rally and rant about this subject.

Just remember, Freedom isn’t free. Somebody has paid, and paid dearly...

Riding Voodoo Country - Adventures in Voodoo, Vampires

and SpiritsBy William Perry

A few decades ago, my wife and I embarked on one of the most culturally rewarding, fun, wild adventures that we had ever taken. It is that adventure that keeps me coming back.

The roots of Voodoo have been traced all the way back to Africa before 1100 AD. Voodoo religion is based on one main supreme deity and several demi-gods called loas or lwas. The loas are much to Voodoo as the Saints are to Catholicism. Each one serving a specific purpose.

Above: Marie-Laveau

It is estimated that by the 1750s, 30,000 slaves a year were being immigrated into Louisiana bringing with them the Voodoo religion. The word Voodoo means Gods or Spirits. They believed

that these spirits had the ability to enter the worshippers. This was believed to be a valuable experience, warding off illness and misfortune.

New Orleans is stock full of folk tales of Voodoo practitioners who can transform into animals or cause animals to invade others. Rather than transforming into wolves, the Voodouns are generally reported as becoming cats.

Speaking of cats: BOSSU (BOH-soo): Is your cat mean and nasty? This male was. Bossu was an evil Voodoo spirit; a demonic “lieutenant”, and trust me, it suited this kitty.

One can only assume that much of the legends that have arisen in New Orleans were spawned by fear and superstition - like any religion really. It is human nature to fear what we do not understand. Voodoo could be perhaps, one of the most misunderstood religions that have ever existed.

The first Voodoo Queen in New Orleans was Saint DeDe, from Santo Domingo who bought her way to freedom in New Orleans. She would hold rituals in her courtyard, just blocks away from the Cathedral. Her drums could be heard during mass! In 1817, the Catholic church decided, all other religions must not practice within the city limits.

Marie Laveau was a hairdresser who, in 1826 became intrigued with the first New Orleans Voodoo Queen, Sanite DeDe. She began to study herbs and the secrets of the Voodoo religion. In spite of her attraction to Voodoo, she never abandoned her Catholic roots. She saw similarities between the two, particularly, between the Voodoo Loas and the Saints. Both demi-gods under one Supreme Being, each having a specific purpose. She incorporated the use of candles and Holy Water in Voodoo rituals.

It was because of this blending of religions that the White Creole Catholics began to find Voodoo a bit more palatable.

Marie retired as Queen in 1875. Although throughout her reign she was feared by many, when she died at the age of 98 in 1881, many people believed she was a saint. She is buried in St. Louis Cemetery # 1. Thousands of visitors flock to her grave site each year to make a wish or give thanks for wishes granted.

Voodoo could be perhaps one of the most misunderstood religions that have ever existed. Legend has it that in the 1800s, in an attempt to help populate the then somewhat seedy French Quarter with more educated, well bred denizens, French families were enticed to send their daughters here to marry. These families were much misled to believe handsome deserving gentlemen were waiting here for them.

The nuns of the Ursuline convent intercepted the girls at their arrival and put them up at the convent. The girls had arrived with their trousseau which were shaped unusually very much like traditional coffins. So mockingly, the girls acquired the name of casket girls.

Their trousseau were placed in the third floor attic of the convent, Continued on Page 50...

Page 50: The Busted Knuckle Chronicles May 3rd, 2012

Continued from Page 49...

and were not retrieved until a proper suitor was found for each girl. When the trousseau were retrieved they were mysteriously found empty. Superstitious individuals of the time claimed that the girls had smuggled vampires here to the French Quarter.

Well, that’s the legend but if this is just a legend, then why does the convent to this day seal each upstairs window with 8000 blessed screws? And every so often one of the windows will shoot open for no apparent reason, and immediately the convent once again seals it shut.

On St. Germaine, down rue Royal, at Ursuline, there sits the former home of Jacques St. Germaine. St. Germaine, moved to New Orleans from France in 1903 and only occupied the home for a short time. It is said that during his time here he attacked and bit a young woman in his home, after luring her there for a glass of wine. She was able to escape however, and make it to the local authorities. St. Germaine mysteriously disappeared. However, the authorities upon entering his lair, found a collection of wine bottles, which they later found to be filled with a combination of wine and human blood. Some say St. Germaine is still alive today, and visits the French Quarter occasionally.

You can hunt Vampires in New Orleans’ oldest...truly. Exploring paranormal phenomena and reveal unprecedented material on the mysterious and sometimes sinister aspects of New Orleans, is what makes a visit even better. Guided tours, such as the New Orleans Vampire Tour gives access to the dark and mysterious world of the undead. I find walking through New Orleans’ history and experience the legends of famous New Orleans vampires, real and fictional, are entertaining.

There are dozens of sights and locations associated with these creatures of the night, including a visit to a noted Vampire tavern. Are there vampires lurking in the French Quarter? You’ll just have to find out for yourself.

In New Orleans, tales of witches were an integral part of local folklore. Among the Cajuns, it was believed that when an evil witch died, she might return as a chauchemar or nightmare witch. This ghostly creature would attack victims in their bed as they slept. The creature would pin the victim down, causing temporary paralysis. You can’t scream, you can’t move. Once she has you, she’ll ride you like a horse. Many a victim has awakened from griping nightmares to find actual whip marks on their body as evidence of the attack! In other parts of the country, as well as in Europe this is referred to as an attack of the Old Hag.

Today we attribute this sort of phenomena to psychic vampirism rather than witchcraft.

The same rules anywhere else, just don’t apply here.

I walked a few hundred feet and arrived at a doorway to what looked like a back yard storage building. Straight down the center of it was a

little light, on either side darkness. Hesitating, I stood just outside peering in. My curiosity was peaked as many of the locals had told me of this place, providing me warnings, with few offering encouragement. Entering, I suddenly had my hand grabbed and started pulling me. A voice, that seemed to resound from all sides, told me, “Come.” At first, I was startled.

Above: Voodoo Doll

The semi-dark kept me from seeing very well. When I realized what was happening, I was delighted. A Women was leading me.

She was speaking English with a heavy accent, whisking me past items which were barely illuminated by the few strands of light coming through the heavy slatted windows. All of a sudden she held a doll in my face. When I asked her how much, she waved her hand from side to side, to show me there was nothing to pay.The doll was clearly handcrafted and I suspect made by her. This wasn’t an item manufactured for Tourists, where handcrafted means made in China.

Above: Voodoo Shop

The doll was small and large, it was frightening to look at, but it was incredible. As I fazed at it, I was pulled and grappled and tugged, I watched her fingers held up, pointing to the open door. Placing the doll in my hand, she shoved me out.

The way I began my day, saying no to the many items shoved in my face, this encounter left me

feeling detached.

Halfway down the alleyway, a man appeared with items for sale, becoming insistent. He was intent to sell me something. The goods were cheap looking, just as he appeared. Suddenly his face changed, but it wasn’t me he was looking at. He put the item down to his die, stepped back, and allowed me to walk by. I could tell that for a moment he wanted to sell me something, but now, looked affraid.

In New Orleans, people aren’t afraid to touch like other parts of North America. It can seem overwhelming at times, but in an exciting way. Even as an Irishman, influenced by the British culture, I loved it. That is except for the ones who kept pulling me back to sell me something. They are determined.

From person to person I asked, in English and French, who could I talk to about Voodoo Dolls. It seemed like I searched for hours, but really it had only been a handful of minutes.

After a while this man jumped down off a porch, rattled off something in Haitian, rolled his eyes grossly at me and threw a polished rock at my feet! I looked down shocked.

I had just been cursed by a Haitian voodoo man. I loved it and until that second, was grateful that

voodoo didn’t intimidate me.

If you are a biker, and a wee bit adventurous, you’ve got to visit New Orleans. If you aren’t shy, can handle the constant grabbing, pulling and rapid talking, you are going to love it. Avoid the aggressive one who just won’t quit or buy something quick.

You just may experience a close encounter, and just might be the one who has voodoo curse on you.

I really didn’t want to leave... which is always a good sign that I enjoyed myself.

I have never forgotten it and that is why I go back. I want to find that Haitian voodoo curser. I want to buy something this time.

I wasn’t insulted by the curse in the least. For me, it was true cultural fun.

So my recommendation to you is ride your motorcycle and go to Louisiana. William Perry
