    Grande Prairie to Fort Nelson Day 1

    Due to a variety of things, Miss Rita and I did not get to hit the road until about 1:00pm on June 18th. The sun had been shining gloriously all morning, but the sky was starting to darken with ominous clouds.

    We headed to Beaverlodge, I wanted to get a photo of Rita with the Beaverlodge Beaver and a kind tourist agreed to snap a few photos for me.

    Back on the bike we stopped in at Gaudins Honda, I needed to borrow a screwdriver to tighten up a couple of things that had come loose during the shake down ride to Fairview on Sunday the 16th. Alan Gaudin and his guys wished me safe journey and off we went.

    I had managed to miss the big downpour that had gone through, but the road spray wasnt dealt with so easily!

    We pulled into Elbow Grease Ventures in Dawson Creek at about 3:pm and had a light lunch with Mike and he got his photo taken with Rita. After thanking him for sponsoring me with such great cleaning products, Rita and I were off

  • again. (Mike is a Bike Magik distributor.)

    The rest of the ride to Fort Nelson was reasonably uneventful, except for the wet spray being kicked up by the trucks and the frigid temperatures.

    It was 38F degrees out according to the air temp gauge on the bike and it felt like there was snow in the air. I stopped at a rest area and threw some hotshots into my Olympia jacket and a couple into my new Held gloves and continued on.

    The gloves kept my hands nice and dry, and I love the built in windshield wiper on the left index finger a handy little contraption to say the least. It does take of a few times of poking yourself with that hard bit of rubber to remember its there and not scratch or try to rub your nose, and even with grimy road spray, the wiper works fabulously.

    The verdict is still out on the Olympia Jacket I find it too short in the waist for me and the sleeves are short. I also dont care for how easily the liner sleeves separate from the outer when taking the jacket off. Some of it is probably operator issuelike forgetting to undo the Velcro at the sleeve before trying to pull your hand out.

    The difference in wearing a leather jacket with zippers and a textile one with Velcro is something that takes a bit getting used to. The jacket is not that warm at 38F with wet conditions. At one point I stopped and put my Frogg Toggs jacket on underneath. That made a huge difference in the warmth factor.

    As I cruised along I saw a rider on the side of the road, I pulled over and sure enough, Nick from Florida had run out of fuel. One of the cardinal rules of riding in the north NEVER pass up a gas station!

    We syphoned some gas out of my tank and I put some Amsoil Motorcycle Octane Boost in his tank to help things along. We got him to within 6 KMs of Fort Nelson when he ran out.

    I flagged down a pick up and the kind gent took Nick and his one gallon jerry can (that hed forgotten to fill) into town and brought him back to the bikes. After fueling up we parted company at 11:30 pm he to go pitch a tent and me to check into my room at the Woodlands Inn & Suites.

    What a HOTEL! Super friendly front desk staff, Steven, the clerk who checked me in had a wicked sense of humour and made sure I knew I could either park my bike under the canopy by a window and he could keep an eye on it or there was great parking right outside the room with a door on the outside with an entrance to the hotel right handy!

    I walked into the room and was floored; a junior suite with a fireplace, full kitchen, a huge bathroom and a separate bedroom

  • replete with glass door. Oh and a KING SIZE bed!

    The room was without a doubt gorgeous. There were lots of amenities, a 24-hour convenience store, a full gym and laundry facilities and yes, in the morning a hose was available to wash poor Black Betty off.

    After a fabulous sleep, I got up, got ready and headed for breakfast. This is an oilfield town and the portions are generous. After seeing the size of the meals people were getting I

    opted to eat off the kids menu!

    I met with David Moore, the general manager and he and I had a brief chat turns out he rides and really understands the need for riders to have the kinds of services and amenities they need.

    Rita had her photo taken with David and then I was off to my next stop.

    At Davids recommendation I went and met Ken from the Bear 103, and he had his picture taken with Rita.

    While I was there, I ran into George Crummey and his daughter Natasha. They bought some patches as had David!

    After more photos with Rita and some hugs, I went to the Fort Nelson Historical Museum. Now, here is a place one could get immersed in! The man who founded the Museum, Marl Brown is not

    only the curator and founder but he has done 90% of the restorations too!

    There is too much to see in a short hour and a half, especially if Marl is there to chat with you. The stories this man has to tell are utterly captivating. The seasonal staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and very willing to ensure that every visitor has a great experience.

    I fell absolutely in love with Marl who is in his 80s and more active and with-it than most 16 year olds I know. The man is a human dynamo! He happily had his photo taken with Rita and I said goodbye to him with a promise to return to capture some of this mans amazing stories on video.

    At about 1pm, I got on the bike and started making my way to Watson Lake YT. About a half hour into the ride, I ran across Nick on the side of the road, this time he was lighting a smoke and not out of fuel!!!

    There was so much game out. I saw Stone Mountain Sheep, goats, moose, bear and buffalo along with a couple of caribouit was an utterly picture perfect day. 21C, blue sky and PERFECT. It was the kind of day that every rider dreams of. The roads were in good shape until about 150 KMs outside of Watson. There were three major construction

  • spots. Nothing horrible though and the waits were not long at all.

    Nick and I rode together until Watson Lake, he proceeded on to Nugget City to camp for the night and I stayed at the Stampeder Bed & Breakfast and Cabins, which is run by a Swiss couple. The cabin I was in is huge and can easily sleep 4 people. The bed was comfortable; there was lots of hot water for the shower great pressureall in all thoroughly enjoyable.

    Breakfast was toast, yogurt and cereal with juice and coffee. I enjoyed the chat I had over breakfast with a couple from Great Britain who were staying in the other cabin and Peter the owner. Soon it was time to pack up the bike and head for Whitehorse.

    At the bridge just outside of Watson Lake there was a 20-minute delay to cross it and

    they are rebuilding the bridge deck. A short 22 KM jaunt up the highway and I was at Nugget City. Linda and Scott had worked late and so they were not up at 9 AM. I had a coffee and Rita had her photo taken at the Northern Beaver Post, I chatted with Nick in the parking lot for a bit

    and wished him a safe journey and I was off again. Next stop Rancheria.Last spring, there was a flood that wiped out Rancherias water system that generates their power. A generator in these parts is a costly thing to run, Linda Bouchard, the owner expressed during the summer last year, it cost over $10,000 a month to provide electricity to their 2 motels, the cabins, the gas pumps and the restaurant.

    Rancheria is one of those places that every truck driver and bus tour that comes down

    the Alcan Highway stops at. The food and the hospitality are the driving forces behind that. The staff is so friendly and so eager to help and please and their food while simple and down to earth is flavorful and plentiful.

    After a hug and a photo op for Rita, we were off again. Next stop, Teslin and the Yukon Motel for

    fuel. This place is nutso busy. The food at this place is comprised of generous, flavorful portions and served up by staff that love their jobs or at least that is the impression one gets from those you deal with.

    After fueling up with regular gas that is priced at $1.54 per litre (HighTest which is very suspect here in the Yukon is $1.69 and hence

    why I run Amsoil Octane Boost in my bike), I headed for my next stop and the first event of the Conga, Yukon Motorcycle Centre.

    Yukon Motorcycle Centre is the OLD Harley shop once owned by Dick Watt and the Wilds out of Calgary.

    Dick is an optometrist and close to retiring, and Jim and Diane Wild divorced a while back, putting the shop in Whitehorse in a precarious position. Greg Irvine and his partner Dean Philpott bought the dealership and turned it into an all makes all models shop. They can service and repair just about anything and they sell Cleveland Cycle Werks bikes and are looking seriously at becoming a Johnny Pag dealer. They have a decent selection of gear, clothing and tee shirts not to mention that you can rent one of their used bikes, so flying in and riding is also an option.

    The gang at this shop is super friendly and very eager and willing to do whatever they can to make a riders stop a pleasant one.

  • I got in around 2pm and was taken up to the Bed & Breakfast I was going to be staying at to drop off my gear.

    I have to admit that when I first got to the Bluejay Suites B & B I was a bit taken aback as I was greeted by a diminutive Japanese lady in a Kimono. The home is a lovely Victorian with a wrap around deck and a huge entry.

    Dean took me back to the dealership where preparations were under way for a group ride & BBQ.

    Lots of riders stopped in on their way to or way home from work they bought hotdogs by donation and many donated to the cause. In all we raised $200 for our causes and had 6 riders join me. The reason for low attendance was two fold a lot of riders had already headed to Dawson City for the Dust to Dawson Gathering and it was raining.

    Never the less, we had a great ride up to Miles Canyon. It is a fascinating place with a ton of history connected to the paddle wheelers that used to navigate this rugged passageway. The color of the water is a rich emerald green and it carves the most amazing route through the dense forest.

    After riding up to the lookout, we then rode down to the suspension bridge where we got an up close view of how fast flowing and how full of deep eddys the water is.

    After a good gab we headed back to the shop where everyone said their goodbyes and I

    headed up to Porter Creek and my room for the night.

    Reiko Tanaka, the owner of the B & B took me to my room after showing me where the TV room and fridge were, and she explained what time breakfast was available from.

    When the door opened to the bedroom I was speechless easily big enough to through a party for about 40 people, the room was equipped with a king sized bed, a fireplace, sitting room, generous closets and a bathroom that was to die for.

    The huge soaker tub was the first thing I checked out after unpacking my gear.

    I had a good long soak and headed for a deep slumber in the over sized and exceedingly comfortable bed.

    I woke up on Friday morning and jumped into the multi headed shower and let the jets pound on my body and then I got dressed, packed and headed downstairs fro breakfast.

    I had given Reiko free hand to make whatever she wanted for breakfast and was treated to a home made Belgian waffle piled high with fruit, whipped cream and real maple syrup were provided to round that out. Coffee and juice were also provided along with yogurt.

    Then Reiko came out with a plate of scrambled eggs, bacon, prosciutto ham and cheese. I expressed to Reiko that there was no way I could eat the entire feast she set out in front of me although I did give it my best

    effort. I asked Reiko if I could please use the message chair and she graciously showed me how it operated and made sure I was set up well. This chair was utterly fabulous and I enjoyed having it beat some of the tension out of my low back and legs.

    Afterwards I was treated to the use of a foot machine that massaged my broken

  • feet and made me feel like I was walking on clouds. Reiko and I spoke about how it was a Japanese lady came to live in the Yukon. She explained that she had moved to Edmonton where she met her partner who is German.

    They decided to move to the Yukon and she has never looked back. She loves this place. I hear that all of the time from the imports that call this place home and I truly see why. The summers in the Yukon are lovely and the scenery is stunning.

    I reluctantly headed back to the Yukon Motorcycle Centre. I truly enjoyed my time at the Bluejay Suites B & B, a very rider friendly spot with covered parking in the back and for those that prefer, street parking right under your room.

    I buckled down to do some work tagging photos, charging cameras and getting my gear ready for the next adventure which would be riding with Benny, a 21 year old tech, to Dawson City for the Dust to Dawson gathering. Benny and I headed out at 3pm after fueling our bikes.

    We stopped at the Braeburn Lodge where we sampled one of their famous cinnamon buns and witnessed another customer attempting to eat a burger when I say attempting I mean that sincerely this thing was so huge, served on a home made bun it made anything that Fat Burger, Burger Heaven and 5 Guys Burgers puts out look like something from McDonalds!

    The ride was uneventful and supremely

    pleasant with picture perfect riding weather as we headed into Dawson City and the Dust to Dawson Gathering.

    Next week, Ill fill you all in on that event and my time in Dawson City.

  • We all love our bikes more than almost anything well this might be a stretch for some but definitely more than most things in life.

    Its a slow building relationship. First you hunt for the perfect ride or at least the perfect

    starting point to build from. In fact a lot of us dont plan on building, customizing or tricking out our rides, it just kind of happens. At least thats what happened to me with my Honeydripper.

    We select the perfect, or best starting point. Slowly we start to make it our own. No matter where you are on this curve, the love of ride is powerful. We clean, polish, shine and service so our baby always looks her best, even if its not finished.

    Some of us enter our babies in Shown Shines, some ride it like they stole it while others just enjoy it themselves. Its amazing how many great bikes there are that have been serviced and shined but almost never ridden. Then there are those who use, abuse and wash it once a year whether it needs it or not. As with most things in life, there are many ways to treat our dearly beloved machines and none of them are wrong.

    Heres the one thing most of us never do,

    no matter how much we love it; Have a professional portrait to capture the glory because like humans, its just not gonna look that good forever at least most of them.

    Turns out I know a guy who knows a guy . . . no, just kidding on that. But I recently met a professional photographer who specializes in this very thing, helping capture the magic.Let me introduce you to Dave Brewin, owner operator of Full Throttle Photo (this name will sound familiar to anyone who has ever been to Sturgis good times).

    Originally from Montreal he now resides in Langley, BC. Dave has been passionate about photography most of his adult life and has created images all over the globe. With Full Throttle he plans to combine his passion with his love of riding.

    A few weeks ago when Dave and I first spoke we discussed shoot locations and time of day for the best lighting. A few weeks later

  • he called with some possible locations. We subsequently met at our first choice and here are our favorites from about 20 proofs.

    After meticulous planning the photo shoot produced many angles and incorporated scenery and backgrounds to compliment the artistic look of each photo. Dave utilizes HDR, an interesting technique which produces a very rich, textured almost painting like result.

    Dave invites you to check out other cool bikes in his web site at: www.fullthrottlephoto.ca. He looks forward to adding your babys image to his portfolio. After all, you want to enjoy your baby on a cold winters night when you wish you were riding it, right?

    Although some beautiful images were created of my Honeydripper, we didnt quite capture the look I wanted so the hunt for the perfect background continues. I will share the results as they are created. See you on the road soon. Q out . . .

  • The 6th Annual Kreater Custom Motorcycles Ride & Rock in support of Kids Care was held on May 26, 2013 in Kelowna, BC. For those who dont know, Kids Care is an organization operated as a public service by the radio stations Q103.1 and Power 104 Kelowna and the area TD Canada Trust Banks.

    Their purpose is to benefit children of the Central Okanagan by identifying their special need and requirements and then developing plans and programs to meet them. To learn more about Kids Care or to make a donation you can email [email protected].

    The forecast for the event called for rain all week, so what a surprise it was to see the sun. Mother Nature was definitely watching over this event to help make it as successful as possible.

    The weather for the day was great, only a couple scattered showers on the Poker Run and it stayed away during the dinner and concert.

    Riders started to arrive at Kreater when the gates opened at 8:30am to register for the Poker Run and receive their first card and the staff were already hard at work setting up for the silent auction, preparing for registering riders, providing coffee and making sure everything was in place to make this a great day for everyone who attended.

Riders then headed to The Sage Pub in Osoyoos for their next card, lunch and time to socialize with fellow riders. Barley Mill Brew Pub in Penticton was the next stop to receive their 4th card. And the final card of the poker run was located at Whiski-Jacks Pub in Westbank. Riders had to receive their final card by 5pm to qualify for prizes.

    The gates opened at 5pm for the dinner and concert, and once again Memphis Blues BBQ House provided a delicious meal of pulled pork, beef, chicken, sausages and coleslaw, salads and dinner rolls.

    After dinner the Poker Run winners were announced. Mens 1st place went to Ian Hofman, winning $1100.00 in prizes, 2nd place winner was Norm Bodrug receiving $800.00 in prizes and 3rd place went to Rod Habberman taking home $700.00 in prizes. The prize for Worst Hand went to Jim Block who also won the 50/50 draw with another lady (sorry didnt get her name), each receiving $700.00 cash. Congratulations to all the winners.

    The MC, Tim Allen for Power 104, took the stage once again to introduce Jackson Cook, the opening act for the evening. Jackson took the stage and before long he had the 900 concert goers warmed up, and many danced and sang along. For more information on Jackson visit his website www.jacksoncook.com.

    The main act for the event was Canadian Alternative Rock Group 54-40. The crowd was fired up and ready to party when 54-40 hit the stage and put on an awesome show playing all their hits including One Day in Your

    Life, I go Blind, and Ocean Pearl. It was an awesome concert/event and everyone I spoke to had a blast!

    The Okanagan Chapter of Veterans MC Canada held their 6th Annual Mike Starker Poker Run this past weekend. We had 45 motorcycles and over 60 people. It was very successful but the T Shirt sales were a little disappointing.

    We left The Packing House Pub in Kelowna and rode to the Oyama Legion where we had a Beef Dip lunch and some cold ones. We then rode to the Enderby Legion were we arrived early and they weren't quite ready but we were well received. Next we went to the Armstrong Legion where we had sandwiches and goodies.

    They had a 50/50 draw for us and Anthony won. We then we rode back to the Packing House Pub where we opened the cards. Cuba won $400.00 high hand a pair of Kings. He donated the money back. Rob Ellis donated $400.00 to us and the Island Chapter also made a donation. Clayton also made a sizeable donation.

    We had lots of door prizes and everyone won something some 2 or 3 times. A great time was had by all. No Police were to be seen anywhere which made the ride even better.

  • Well, it's another year in the books, and another rousing success for the Calgary Motorcycle Ride For Dad.

    I didnt get to partici-pate on the Executive this year due to school demands, but I really have to hand

    it to those who continued to work so hard on this event... it was a job well done, and well done even under adversity.

    Due to a double booking, the Ride ended up not being able to utilize the Max Bell Arena as a start point, so with 7 weeks to go before the actual day, they were completely revamping the start of the event to begin at the Deerfoot Mall. Perhaps some of the fine details werent in place until the very night before, but they WERE in place for ride day, and thats what counts. I am very proud of my compatriots

    who worked so hard on this years Ride for Dad.

    In the end, it seems that moving the start of the parade may have benefited the ride; the massive pavement area available at Deerfoot Mall which was less than 1/4 full at 8:30am, was a veritable sea of bikes, trikes, and scooters by 9:45 with more rolling in; and it appeared to me to be considerably more bikes than could be fitted in at the Max Bell. Turns out I was right!

    Continued on Next Page

  • The event was put together in fine form, and this year there were 635 registered participants (26% higher than last year), approximately 600 bikes, and pledges of an amazing $106,000.00! Thats a 16% increase over last year per capita, and overall about $170,000.00 was raised.

    The day started with a presentation to Dr. Eric Hyndman representing the 2012 MRFD Calgary contribution to his research; that cheque was in the amount of $58,000.00, which Eric puts to good use every year in research to stop this disease in its tracks.

    Dignitaries then spoke, Bill Brooks gave another inspiring and amusing speech, the ride was blessed and our Ride Captain gave the riders their instructions; and then we were all more than ready to go.

    The parade itself, once begun, took over ten minutes to pass a given point, and stretched out seemingly forever in front and behind us. Im told it was about 5km long, which is also a new record for Calgary. A huge reason for this is the fact that the riders groups attended in massive numbers, even better than usual.

    The 3rd Cav, Blue Knights, Red Knights, HOG, Star Riders, Christian Riders, and countless more groups continue to bring their support and put their charitable fundraising where their group mouth is. Without the tireless work of these folks, and everyone who attends, this ride wouldnt be able to have the positive impact it does on our community. I know the Executive thanks you deeply for your support,

    and hopes to see you again next year, in even greater numbers!

    As always, Calgary Police Services and Al-berta Sherriffs department officers worked diligently to keep the participants safe and on time, and we pretty much shut down Deerfoot Trail for about 50 minutes. Glorious!

    After completing the parade, we had to watch

  • the others head out for the poker run and party that we had to give a miss to, but we understand that Suicide Blonde and friends rocked the party, many, many great auction items were passed out, and another great ball of fun was had by all!

    The rain gave most of the day a miss, and certainly helped with attendance. Now, the Executive (this time, including yours truly, or so Ive been informed in a rather stern fashion) has the challenge of improving yet again next year. Not an easy task, but rest assured; the Executive Committee of the Cal-gary Motorcycle Ride for Dad will rise to the challenge!

    In a small side note, I would like to send a very hearty get well to Steve Adair, Co-Chair for the MRFD Calgary. Steve had neck surgery just days after the event, meaning he did all of the organizing and the exhausting work on event day with a cane, and suffering from pain he absolutely refused to show. I hope you feel a ton better very soon, sir. I admire you and all of our Exec for the job you did this year.

    I also want to thank the members of the Vulcan Riders Association of Canada Calgary Chapter 02-AB-02 for jumping right in to attending rides as a group. Next year, well try to give the Star Riders a run for their money on attending numbers, right? RIGHT!

    Until next time.. ride safe, ride sane, ride DRY. R.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~John Sinclair has left a new comment on your post Seven months of frustration and disap-pointment...:
    Sure wish I had come across this blog entry earlier. Just got completely screwed by Jeff
    today. Dropped off all my tins to him in Feb-ruary for a custom paint job on my bike with a delivery date of April 15th. Date came and went, no painting done. Contacted him and he made several excuses but said hed be right on it.
    After a couple of weeks, still nothing. Went through Kamloops just prior to Victoria Day on my way to a rally in Salmon Arm and stopped in. Was surprised to find the shop closed but Jeff was there.
    He explained why he was late and that work would be done on the bike that weekend. He told me to stop in Victoria Day on my way back though Kamloops. Guess what, no Jeff on Victoria Day.
    Contacted him again later in the week and he said the bike was underway, hed just need another week. Another week went by and still no word.
    All his promises went unkept. He never called when he said he would, never sent the pictures he promised and never did any work when he said he would.
    Finally, having enough, I went down to Kamloops today (a two and one-half hour drive). Imagine my surprise to find the shop closed with a notice on the door from a collection agency and the landlord.
    They have thrown Jeff out and seized all his assets. Now here I am, cant contact Jeff, have no idea where all my bike parts are and am out half of the $4,500 paint job which I left as
    a deposit. Surprise, surprise, I cant get ahold of Jeff via phone, text or email.
    No idea what Im going to do now. As if this wasnt bad enough, Jeff is the third painter in a row to screw me on this bike. The first kept putting me off and after four months, I decided to drop him. The second painter talked a good game but obviously wasnt a painter as he botched the job horribly before getting even half way through. Finally Jeff.
    Thought I did all the right things looked at his work, contacted previous clients, toured his shop and met the staff and finally, had several meetings with him to go over exactly what I wanted.
    Lost all my faith in painters. No wonder this guy went out of business!
    competitive classes in the CMDRA with the most entries overall. Although this is the last of the class by class articles, Street is where it all begins for most racers.
    Martin Miller was born to be on a motorcycle. His father had him around motocross at a young age and in 2006, Miller started hitting up the Friday Street Legal racing in Mission, BC. Its there he met some CMDRA racers who taught him the ropes of the CMDRA.
    In 2009 Miller had a fantastic first season setting personal bests for reaction time and
    winning a few along the way. I like racing CMDRA Street Class because it is fun, said Miller. I like the bikes, what people do to them, how they perform. The camaraderie is a big thing for me.
    Steve Bunn is a staple in the CMDRA class, racing since 2006. Bunn noted that Street is an easy and affordable way to get out, have fun, meet some people and race. I can honestly say every meet Ive attended, has been a hoot, said Bunn. He feels the veterans are mostly approachable and willing to help.
    Being a veteran himself, anyone that is
    interested can certainly come see me in the pits at any race I attend, for a bit of coaching or just to hang out. Bunn is looking forward to another race year and will continue to do race for as long as he can.
    It costs $30 to run in this class per race, not including expenses and gate fees for parts and the crew. Their plates are designated with S and reserved any street legal motorcycles.There are 8 requirements and specifications that Top Fuel bikes must adhere to in order to race; engine, drive train, suspension & brakes, frame, wheels & tires, body, electrical, and rider.
    The engine must be stock-type engine designed and manufactured for production motorcycle use with unlimited displacement. Carburetors, turbochargers, fuel injectors and superchargers may be used in any combination. Fuel system has a mandatory
  • shut-off. Nitrous bottles must be stamped with a DOT-1800 rating and be securely mounted on the inside perimeter of the frame. These bikes run on gasoline and nitrous only.
    There are three rules for the drive train; chain guards, clutch guard and transmission. Chain and/or belt guards are mandatory meaning they must have front and rear guards to cover the width and at least the top run of the center line of the sprocket of any chain or belts. Any type of motorcycle clutch or belt drive may be used and must have at least half of the side surface covered by .060 inch steel or .125 inch aluminum unless stock equipped. Any transmission can be used.
    The third rule applies to suspension and brakes. Front and rear hydraulic type brakes are mandatory. Minimum rotor size is a 7 inch diameter by 3/16 inch thickness. The handlebars must be at least 22 inches overall with grips removed. The snap back throttle return is mandatory. Any shifter or brake pedal that can be operated with the foot on the peg will be permitted. Air shifters are permitted if the air shift bottles are stamped with DOT-1800 rating and securely mounted.
    The front suspension minimum fork diameter is 32mm or stock with a minimum of travel of 2 inches. Steering dampeners are recommended. Wheelie bars are prohibited.With respect to the frame, stock or aftermarket frames only are permitted. Again the rules list bicycle parts are prohibited. Still makes me wonder what bicycle parts could be considered! The ground clearance is a minimum of 2 inches with the rider on the bike.
    Front wheel is a minimum diameter 16 inches
    with a maximum diameter of 21 inches. The rear wheel must have a minimum diameter of 15 inches with a maximum of 18 inches. The minimum front tire width is 3 inches. Tires must be in good condition with 2/32 inches of tread.
    No body parts are necessary. The rear fender must cover the full width of the rear tire and extend behind the rear axle and forward below the seat position. The seat, tail section and rear fender can be made into one unit. Fairings are permitted if mounted securely.
    The seat should be stock OEM or seat with a step to prevent rider from sliding backwards.Any ignition system is permitted and the bike must be equipped with a positive ignition cut-off attached to the rider with a lanyard of rawhide, wire, etc. The charging system is optional. The starting system must be a self-starter or external electric starter. Roller or push starts are prohibited. Only data gathering computers are allowed. It is very important to note that only CMDRA
    licenses will be accepted if you are running 9.99 or quicker. The helmet must be a full face helmet, must be Snell 05 or ECE 22.05 approved. The rider must be in full leathers if running over 120 mph where if it is in two pieces, there must be a zipper to join the two pieces at the waist. The rider must wear leather boots or shoes that cover the ankles and full finger semi or full gauntlet leather gloves with double armor reinforcement in the palm and finger/knuckle area on the
  • Metcalfe and Politelli prevail in MX wars at Wild Rose
    In what turned out to be the toughest racing of the season so far, Brett Metcalfe claimed his second consecutive MX1 clean sweep to win Round 3 of the Monster Energy Motocross Na-tionals at Wild Rose MX Park in Calgary, AB on Sunday.
    In the MX2 title hunt, Metcalfes Monster Energy/Parts Canada/Leading Edge Kawasaki teammate Austin Politelli stayed on a roll to claim his second consecutive clean sweep and
    third overall win of the year.
    Although Metcalfe recorded only the fifth fastest qualifying time behind his MX1 teammate Teddy Maier, the Australian was more than fast enough when it really counted in the motos.
    The first MX1 moto holeshot went to Cycle North Hondas Ross Johnson, who was followed into turn one by Maier, Metcalfe, Red Bull/Fox/Royal Distributing/KTMs Tyler Medaglia and MX101Yamahas Jeremy Medaglia.
    It only took a few turns before Metcalfe grabbed the lead. Johnson gradually disappeared from the frontrunners and would settle for seventh at the finish line.
    Although Maier would stick with Metcalfe for about half the race, the American was unable to mount a successful challenge and stick a pass on his teammate. Maiers second place soon went out the window after he was vic-timized by a radiator hose problem, which left him on the sidelines with zero points.
    Austin Politelli made it three wins in a row and has a healthy points lead going into Edmonton.
    Ross Johnson (25) grabbed both holeshots and earned a total of $1200 from Royal Distributing
    for his efforts.
  • Behind Metcalfe, battles for position raged between the other top-five candidates. Jeremy Medaglia hounded his brother Tyler until he stuck a definite pass to secure second. Tyler Medaglia next succumbed to Rockstar Energy/OTSFF/Yamaha Motovan.coms Bobby Kiniry and Sewer Rat Yamahas Morgan Burger.
    Kiniry had suffered a mediocre, outside the top-10 start but lay down a furious pace to slice and dice his way into the top-five. In the closing laps, he picked off Tyler Dags to then go after Jeremy Medaglia, but with time running out the New York native had to settle for third. Burger held on to fourth while Tyler Medaglia cemented the top-five finishers.
    Fast starter Ross Johnson surprised by also collecting the second moto holeshot: this time ahead of Kiniry, Yamaha-mounted Jake Anstette, Jeremy Medaglia, and Morgan Burger, which in turn earned him a $600 bonus from Royal Distributing for his two holeshots on the day.
    The Leading Edge duo, Metcalfe and Maier, got off to less promising starts in the second moto. Maier found himself outside the top-five - Metcalfe outside the top-10. Tyler Medaglia also faced a tepid start, buried somewhere in mid-pack. He had his work cut out for him to make his way into the top-10.Up front, meanwhile, Kiniry wasted no time sticking a pass on Johnson to take the lead. A few laps later Jeremy Medaglia, Burger, and Maier had also passed Johnson and became locked in a dogfight over second position.
    Johnson eventually faded out of the top-10 and would greet the checkered flag in a dis-tant 18th place.
    About a third of the way into the moto, Metcalfe arrived on the scene, methodically knifing his way into second place. From this point on the race for first became a slugfest that would last till the checkered flag was waved.
    Metcalfe went to work on Kiniry, who kept the Aussie behind him until the midway point. Immediately, Metcalfe put a few seconds on Kiniry, but was unable to totally shake him off. Together they put some distance on third place Maier, but the Iowa native wasnt in the mood to be left out of the game and started to close in until he became part of the battle.
    As the moto wound down, the trio fought
    tooth and nail for position, with Maier hounding Kiniry and Kiniry hounding Met-calfe. But when it was over Metcalfe had man-aged to prevail and take his second moto win of the day, followed by Kiniry in second and Maier in third.
    Jeremy Medaglia held onto fourth, followed by Sewer Rat Racings Morgan Burger, who crossed the line fifth.
    Brett Metcalfe went 1-1 in Calgary. He had Bobby Kiniry and Teddy Maier on his tail in the second
    moto to make for the most exciting race of the series to date
    Topher Ingalls is closing the gap on Politelli each weekend and is favoured to end the Kawasaki
    riders win streak.
  • Kiniry clinched second overall on the strength of 3-2 motos while Jeremy Medaglia nailed down third overall with his 2-4 motos results.
    In the MX2 title hunt Austin Politelli had it a bit easier than his MX1 teammate Metcalfe, but he still had to work a little harder for the win than his previous clean sweep.
    Politelli had set the fastest qualifying time with a 2:02.105, but it was nearly matched by Red Bull/Fox/Royal Distributing/KTMs Kaven Benoit, who ended up second with 2:02.323, and RTR Performance Hondas Topher Ingalls who laid down 2:02.898Cycle North Hondas Brad Nauditt snared the first MX2 moto holeshot, followed by Benoit, Politelli, and Ingalls. A tense, three-way battle for the lead ensued with Benoit and Politelli pushing through on lap four. Nauditt then found himself under attack by Ingalls, who after a few challenges made the pass for third.
    Benoits up front position ended not too long after he took control of the moto. He went down hard as he tried to distance himself from the chase group, breaking a lever in the process then soon headed back to the paddock.
    Politelli inherited the lead and would keep it till the finish line. Ingalls moved up to second place where he would hold a comfortable gap over Nauditt, who would greet the checkered in third.
    Devil Lake MX Kawasakis Josh Clark tried to close the gap to third but ran out of time. He held on to fourth place, continuing his strong season so far. GDR Honda rider Blake Savage cemented the top-five.
    Politelli grabbed the second moto holeshot and never looked back. Behind him were Clark, Benoit, Ingalls, Savage and Blackfoot-Direct Yamahas Jared Allison, all very much determined to put an end to Politellis win-ning streak.
    Benoit, a little too anxious to make a pass, slid out not long after the start of the moto, remounting around 10th. Ingalls then began to push the pace of the chase group. He also went down in a deeply rutted corner. Clark gratefully took over second place again with Savage staying close on his tail.
    Within a few laps, however, Savage tossed it away, allowing a hard-on-the-gas Ingalls and Benoit to get back into the mix. Towards the end of the moto Ingalls reclaimed second
    place from Clark. Benoit also stuck a pass on Clark, relegating him to fourth, where he would finish just ahead of Allison.
    Ingalls strong ride netted him second overall, thanks to his 2-2 motos. Clark took home a well-earned third overall on the strength of his 4-4 moto results.
    Nauditt, meanwhile, failed to reproduce his
  • Wardlow AB: The second round of the Royal Distributing Canadian Cross Country Series was hosted by the Lethbridge Motorcycle Club in a historic location of the Porcupine Hills. The Foothills of the Rocky Mountain area provides an epic balance of elevation change and smooth flowing trails.
    Vernon BC s` Victoria Hett rode her Valley Motosports TE 250 to a 6th place Intermediate. This class in Alberta is a class below Pro, where in BC she competes in the Intermediate Class 2 levels below Pro. Given a course which is much faster than her typical riding areas and heavier competition, CGRT is pleased with her finish.
    Once again the Pro Class was stacked with 17 of Canada` s finest riders. The course conditions definitely separated the riders who can do well in their comfort zone from those who simply know how to be the best. Airdrie AB` s Shane Cuthbertson had a great 4th place
    start on his A&E Racing backed TE 300 and pushed his way into 3rd position for the first two laps of the 5 lap event. He rode strong the entire race, keeping pace with the leaders, however a malfunctioning quickfill jug, cost Shane valuable seconds in the pits allowing another rider and Kitimatt BC resident, CGRT teammate, Ben Rego to pass him. Shane finished in 5th position.
    Ben Rego, had a poor start, and rode hard to move his A&E Racing supported TE 300 towards the front and a final 4th position. Claiming to have crashed a number of times and happy to be safe and sound, Ben was pleased with his finish.
    Ryan Linderman of Hill Crest Mines AB, finished a credible 7 position in the Pro Class. Crossing the finish line seconds behind 6th place and a few minutes behind veteran Shane Cuthbertson, Ryan had a break out ride, proving he has speed and endurance during a 3 hour event.
  • Szoke Narrowly Claims Victory at Kelso Conservation Area
    Brantford ON Canada - June 18th 2013
    Jordan Szoke narrowly claimed victory at the Kelso Conservation Area Mountain Bike Race Series Tuesday evening. Szoke has been on a win streak, claiming all four victories since the beginning of the season.
    Tonight we really stepped up the pace, John (Cauchi) and I have been battling it out all season, he almost nipped me on this one. says Jordan. We both just came off the Lake2Lake 29er Mountain Bike Event on Sunday, it seems appropriate that we battled it out here at the mountain too.
    The 24 km, three lap loop consisted of lots of
    tricky single track, tough climbs and very fast downhills.
    The weekly Kelso Conservation Area Mountain Bike Race Series is held at the Kelso Conservation Area, with a full calendar hosting 14 races plus a finale event at the end of the season. The series has welcomed many professional O-Cup and Canada Cup racers offering a good training ground with some of the best climbs that Southern Ontario has to offer.
    The eight time Canadian Superbike Champion uses bicycling as a way to prepare for his motor-sports events. When asked why he decided to compete in Mountain Bike Racing, Szoke responded; This particular competition is very convenient for me, we usually ride Tuesday nights out of our supporting shop Bicycle Works. The boys and I come here instead to contend and represent. Bicycle Works is the major sponsor for the event for 2013.
    Jordan currently leads the Kelso Championship and will continue to represent Bicycle Works for the remainder of the season.
    Watch for Jordan showing off his Observed Trials skills at the next Bulls and Bikes event June 22nd in Sudbury On Canada.
  • Snow White has me stumped. Something in the motor is making noise and it has me scratching my head.
    I could dive head long into the motor pulling parts apart to seek out the source but it could quickly get out of
    my reach. I had to bite the bullet taking her to a trained tech to sort out the problems.
    I left her together and running so he could hear exactly what I was hearing. It was my only option. I've been on the other side of the counter when some well-meaning customer has dropped a box of parts off saying it didn't work. It meant lots of time checking things that didn't need to be checked and time means money.
    It was difficult. The local guys specialize in Jap bikes so while a motor is a motor I wanted someone who knew the inside of a big twin. The closest Harley dealership doesn't even like working on Harleys so my aftermarket Harley "inspired" motor would be a complete slap in the face to them.
    That left me and Snow White travelling three times the distance to Yorkton Harley Davidson. Even though she wasn't booked in until the next morning they had her unloaded with all the techs surround her giving their two cents as to what the problem might be; all asking
    Bill, the service writer, if they were the one that was going to get to work on her. As I waited for the paper work to be drawn up I looked through the bikes in the showroom.
    Owner Rick understands that it is the bike and its strong heritage that got it and them to where they are now. The majority of the floor space is dedicated to bikes. I was eyeing up a murdered out RoadKing and before I knew it they had a spare helmet strapped on my head and on the road for a test ride. I was impressed. Tempted. The blacked out two up bagger is the complete opposite of Snow White making a good compliment to my garage space.
    For now I have to wait on a prognoses from the mechanic. As I talk to Rick he told me about cutting the drive belt on the open primary of his drag bike because it would throw the belt at the top end. The cut belt allowed half the belt to stay on through the
    trap. It reassures me that they understand performance, that sometimes a wrong makes correct. He pointed out the Shovelheads and other bikes that his staff ride and work on.
    Yorkton Harley Davidson understands the last 110 years, that bikes are apart of us, who we are. They understand that we all come from different walks of life, from different income levels. That we stood behind our V-twin when it wasn't fashionable, when it wasn't the most reliable. Rick is there to make sure that those roots, the very foundation that Harley Davidson was built on dont get lost.
