SUNDAY 2ND OCTOBER 2016

TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

In our readings from Lamentations we

are reminded of the fall of ancient

Jerusalem and the Exile to Babylon,

but many can identify with Israel’s

experience. Some of us have seen our

land made desolate by war and others

have had their own days of despair

and discouragement. Yet even on the

darkest day, there is hope, for God is

forever faithful, and as the night

retreats and dawn breaks, we can be

reminded of God’s love and

compassion and we wait for the One

in whom we have hope.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns October 2nd 2016

Opening Hymn

I sing the almighty power of God

That made the mountains rise,

That spread the flowing seas abroad,

And built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained

The sun to rule the day;

The moon shines full at his command,

And all the stars obey.

All creatures, numerous as they be,

Are subject to your care;

There’s not a place where we can flee

But God is present there.

God’s hand is my perpetual guard,

He guides me with his eye;

Why should I, then, forget the Lord,

Who is for ever nigh?

Isaac Watts (1674-1748) alt.

TIS 119

TUNE: Newington

Gradual Hymn

For the beauty of the earth,

For the beauty of the skies,

For the love which from our birth

Over and around us lies,

Christ, our God, to you we raise

This our sacrifice of praise.

For the beauty of each hour

Of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale, and tree and flower,

Sun and moon and stars of light,

Christ, our God, to you we raise

This our sacrifice of praise.

For the joy of ear and eye,

For the heart and mind’s delight,

For the mystic harmony

Linking sense to sound and sight,

Christ, our God, to you we raise

This our sacrifice of praise.

For the joy of human love,

Brother, sister, parent, child,

Friends on earth and friends above,

For all gentle thoughts and mild,

Christ, our God, to you we raise

This our sacrifice of praise.

For the church that evermore,

Lifting holy hands above,

Offers up on every shore

The pure sacrifice of love,

Christ, our God, to you we raise

This our sacrifice of praise.

Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835-1917) alt.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns October 2nd 2016

Offertory Hymn

All creatures of our God and King,

Lift up your voice and with us sing

Alleluia, alleluia;

O burning sun with golden beam,

And silver moon with softer gleam,

O praise him, O praise him,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Swift-rushing winds that are so strong,

And clouds that sail in heaven along,

O praise him, alleluia;

Fresh-rising morn, in praise rejoice,

And lights of evening, find a voice:

O praise him, O praise him,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O flowing water, pure and clear,

Make music for your Lord to hear,

Alleluia, alleluia!

O fire, so masterful and bright,

Providing us with warmth and light,

O praise him, O praise him,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Dear mother earth, who day by day

Unfold rich blessings on our way,

O praise him, alleluia!

All flowers and fruits that in you grow,

Let them his glory also show;

O praise him, O praise him,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

And everyone of tender heart,

Forgiving others, take your part,

O praise him, alleluia!

All who long pain and sorrow bear

Praise God and on him cast your care;

O praise him, O praise him,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Let all things their Creator bless,

And worship him in humbleness;

O praise him, alleluia!

Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son,

And praise the Spirit, Three in One:

O praise him, O praise him,

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns October 2nd 2016

Final Hymn

Refrain:

All things bright and beautiful,

All creatures great and small,

All things wise and wonderful –

The Lord God made them all.

The wildflowers in their beauty,

The mountain ranges tall,

The billabongs and rivers,

And friendly birds that call,

Refrain

The cold wind in the winter,

The bright, life-giving sun,

The ripe fruits in the garden –

He made them every one.

Refrain

The coloured walls of gorges,

The gum trees green and tall,

The rocks, and pools, and palm trees,

The sparkling waterfall,

Refrain

The many-coloured corals,

The creatures of the sea,

Of bushland, field or desert,

On farms, or roaming free,

Refrain

He gave us eyes to see them,

And lips that we might tell

How great is God Almighty

Who has made all things well.

Refrain

Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895) (vv. 2 alt., 5, and refrain)

Psalm 137

1. By the waters of Babylon we sat down and wept:

when we remembered Zion.

2. As for our harps we hung them up:

upon the trees that are in that land.

3. For there those who led us away captive required of us a song:

and those who had despoiled us demanded mirth,

saying ‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’

4. How can we sing;

the Lord’s song in a strange land?

5. If I forget you, O Jerusalem:

let my right hand forget its mastery.

6. Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth:

if I do not remember you, if I do not prefer Jerusalem above my chief joy.

7. Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem:

how they said ‘Down with it, down with it, raze it to its foundations.’

8. O daughter of Babylon, you that lay waste:

happy shall he be who serves you as you have served us;

9. Happy shall he be who takes your little ones:

and dashes them against the stones.

Canons, Canons everywhere.

How is the title Canon used?

In the Anglican tradition Canons are associated

with Cathedrals. There are Canons elected and

appointed to the Cathedral Chapter which oversees the diocesan level of

the Cathedral.

There are also Canons who assist the Dean in the running of the

Cathedral. In this diocese they are called Canons in Residence.

Canon Kevin & Canon Catherine are excellent examples of those who

serve the Cathedral in that way and we are fortunate to have them with

us. Dean Phillip

100th Anniversary of The Consecration of the Cathedral When the new Bishop +Lewis Radford arrived in Goulburn in 1915 he discovered that

the Cathedral had not been consecrated. There was a minimal amount owing and so it

was duly paid, and the Cathedral was consecrated in 1916. Today we will be

remembering this milestone in our Intercessions.
