Bites of Bread from Bob “Christmas is all about….” You can fill in the blank with probably a dozen or more answers you will hear in the coming weeks: “Family,” “Children,” “Getting together with those you love,” “Presents.” I want to say that one of the things Christmas is “all about” is “giving:” it begins with “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten son.” The baby in the manger gave his life on the cross to overcome the power of death. Out of this tradition we give gifts to one another on Christmas.

I was visiting with a couple from our church a few weeks ago and they said they had already done all of their Christmas shopping. They went on to explain that for their younger family members they gave money toward their college education. For the older family members they had given farm animals through World Vision. That is a wonderful idea. It gives a whole new concept to the idea of buying a present for that “old goat” in your family.

At Salem First Christian Church, we once again have our trees of giving. Each Sunday of Advent has a theme: “What Did They Bring Him?”; “What Shall We Give Him?”; “What Will You Give Him?”; “What Can I Give Him?” As you answer these ques-

tions for yourself, we invite you to consider the five giving trees in our building. As you enter the build-ing, you will see the tree for giving hats, scarves, gloves and mittens. In the gathering area outside of the Chapel is a tree for giving school supplies and backpacks. In the chapel is a tree for giving personal hygiene items (travel or full size). In the Narthex (the area outside of the Sanctuary) are two trees: one is for papers products and the other is for food donations.

We encourage you to bring your donations through December 28. On that Sunday we will have one combined worship service at 10:00 am with one last chance to sing some of our favorite Christmas carols. Following the service, all who are able are invited to bring things from the Giving Trees down to the Fel-lowship Hall where the items will be sorted. Some of these items will be given to our guests who will be joining us for a meal, and the remaining items will then be taken to places like: Family Building Blocks, HOME, Marion-Polk Food Share and the Union Gos-pel Mission.

Young Married Couples with Children Yes, you love your spouse (that’s a given), and you would not trade your kids for the world, but . . . how long has it been since you had time to do anything fun together–just the two of you? Does your “date night” consist of drive-through coffee, running errands, and grocery shopping with the kids? Wouldn’t it be fun to hang out with a group of folks like you?

This new ministry group was formed with you in mind–young married couples of 1-10 years with young children. Life can be crazy trying to fit everything in, right? This group can help strengthen your marriage, as well as broaden your fellowship circle and have a fun time doing it! It can be as simple as just showing up or as in-depth as formulating and executing a plan. Come see what is in store for your relationship!

As most of you know, the knee replacement surgery went very well; healing is in process. A Warm Welcome On November 30 Heather Kreter came forward to transfer her membership to Salem First Christian Church. She came forward with Brandi Moya (our Wedding Hostess) because she has been in conversa-tion with Brandi about being married here in March. Her fiancé is currently deployed with the Marines in Africa. Heather has a daughter, Bailey, who will be two years old in February. Welcome to the family.

Thanksgiving for HOME Youth I know our church is filled with angels and last Wednesday we saw a wonderful example of angels at work. The Ambassador class provided a Thanksgiv-ing meal for the Youth Empowerment Program (Culinary program), which teaches restaurant skills to five youth at a time for a 3-month period and then feeds 30-40 homeless kids each Wednesday night.

Allison Pfaff came in early to prepare more food to fill in from Sunday’s dinner. The Ambassador class decorated and set the tables. They served all the food and DID THE DISHES.

The opportunity for the kids and the Ambassadors to interact with each other in a meal and laugh and have fun was such a blessing. The other joy of the day was when a girl in the class told us she had a second inter-view for a job and a boy was asked to interview at another restaurant.

The evening seemed very special because of the gen-erosity of the Ambassadors, both in their participation and, of course, in funding the dinner.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie It comes every year at the same time, and yet, some-how, every year it seems to take us by surprise. I’m talking about Christmas. We ask ourselves, “How can it be December already?” “Where did the time go?”

I’m sure a pregnant young mother asked a similar question all those years ago as she and her husband traveled to their destination. “How can it be time already,” she asked as her husband desperately searched for shelter. The environment wasn’t what they had planned, and yet their baby came. They hadn’t fixed the nursery, decorated the tree or fin-ished their shopping and yet a King was born. And despite all of the unfinished tasks, in the end, none of that mattered because it was all about a baby.

Yes, it is December and there are many activities and projects and shopping and decorating and baking and planning and lots of other tasks we think we need to get done to prepare for the celebration of Christmas, but, in the end, let us remember, it is all about a baby. It’s about Jesus. He didn’t wait until there was a house with a nursery and a decorated tree to come into this world.

The only preparation we need comes from our hearts; none of the rest matters. Prepare your hearts to wel-come the King because, ready or not, here He comes!

And, ready or not, here come the children to tell you about Jesus. They will tell the story of Jesus’ birth as only they can in “ It’s All About a Baby,” on Decem-ber 14, during the 11:00 am service, followed by a “Happy Birthday, Jesus” party in the Fellowship Hall. Come celebrate the birth of Jesus with us.

Ramblings from Riane There is nothing like kicking off the Christmas sea-son with the Advent Walk! Even though it was a bit chilly outside, we enjoyed being a part of this time-less tradition. The Christmas carols and thoughtful message reminded us of the “reason for the season!” Thank you to all who came out with the community to celebrate this wonderful time of year!

Pledge Drive Update The Giving and Sharing Team is overwhelmed by the loving generosity of our church family who gra-ciously and willingly participated in our Church Pledge Drive, "Thou Shalt Not NOT Give."

113 individuals/households have committed to giving $448,564 to the church next year. This represents approximately two-thirds of our total church budget adopted for 2015. The Budget, as approved by the Board, was accepted at $683.906.

We look forward to seeing what amazing things God will do through the gifts of this particular Body of Christ in 2015.

Live Nativity Scene Bus Trip Monday, December 15 6:00 pm Leave from the church

Join a trip to Portland to see 11 scenes from the life of Jesus portrayed by live people and animals. This is sponsored by Lynchwood Christian Church (Pastor Bob's former church) and Lynchwood Church of God. Sign up by calling the church office or at the information center.

Mission 2 Mexico Deadline The dates for the trip are March 19-28, 2015. We will be building four homes this year.

The application plus $100 are due by Sunday, De-cember 14. The cost of the trip is $425 per person. We are having fundraisers to offset some of the cost.
