Strengthening Families Program Sunday, January 12

6:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall

This program is designed to help strengthen family relationships through better communication for families of 7 year olds to high school youth. This Strengthen-ing Families event is providing a free dinner and childcare for children under 7.

Super Bowl Party & Potluck Sunday, February 2

3:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall Come join us for the Super Bowl. We will be streaming the Super Bowl live. Enjoy food, fellowship, and fun for everyone.

Please bring your favorite appetizer or finger food to share. There will be a game bracket and voting on best and worst commercials to participate in during the game. The children will be providing a half-time show for everyone to enjoy.

The Frees to Share of Upcoming Mission All Worship Services - January 12

Erik & Kim Free will be sharing about their upcoming Mission to Mozambique on Sunday, January 12. They grew up in the Oregon Region. He will train youth and elders in the community in agricultural skills and will also serve as a local church pastor as needed. She will train the church community on health care and preventative medical care. Kim will also work with women and girls on empowerment projects.

Bites of Bread from Bob I always enjoy watching the end-of-the-year summa-ries–the people and events of the past year. Some-times it is easy to forget all that has happened. On Sunday, December 29, we did that for the Outreach of Salem First Christian Church. To give that infor-mation a wider audience, I am listing it below.

In 2013 we had 4 Service Sundays (our next will be March 30.) During those Service Sundays we did the following:

• Sang at care centers and homes twice • Made cards for service people and “caring for

others” three times • Projects for Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network

three times • Projects for Marion-Polk Food Share two times • CARA-sponsored yard projects for members • Cornerstone Class began a commitment to do

yard work for Peter Larson monthly • A kitchen clean-up in preparation for the Culinary

Arts Program through HOME • Tied quilts for others twice • Worked at a Habitat for Humanity project • Knit hats for the homeless

In 2013 we contributed to Congregations Helping People. This is a way the downtown churches work in a coordinated way to reach the physical needs of people of Salem.

In 2013 we provided phone answering services through NW Human Service so that those without phones can receive messages pertaining to job interviews.

In 2013 we once again provided Easter morning breakfast at the Union Gospel Mission.

In 2013 we hosted Salem Interfaith Hospitality Net-work for three one-week rotations. Household items have been donated as well.

In 2013 we helped sponsor the Culinary Arts Pro-gram with HOME. Neva Clausen is the head chef. Two of the students of the program recently got jobs.

In 2013 CARA ministry took bags of care to those coming out of the hospital and those homebound. Our Elders took communion each month to our homebound as well.

In 2013 we had monthly support groups: Alzheimer’s Spiritually Speaking & Rebuilders.

In 2013 we had two cycles of Grief Share. Our next one begins February 8.

In 2013 we hosted AA and Alanon groups, Overeat-ers Anonymous Groups, CanDo Neighborhood Association.

In 2013 the Prayer Shawl ministry has made and given away many prayer shawls.

In 2013 our Christian Women’s Fellowship raised over $7000 for Outreach for: Disciples Mission Fund, Salvation Army, Interfaith Hospitality Net-work, Union Gospel Mission, Vacation Bible School, Alzheimer Network and water projects in the Congo and Haiti. Their tied 63 quilts (216 over the past 5 years) to go to Family Building Blocks, Liberty House, Veterans’ Hospital, Helping Hands.

In 2013 Outreach offering (not counting Christmas or end-of-the-year giving) was $42,515.

During Advent 2013 we had Giving Trees for the fol-lowing causes: • Lampas International: a ministry to street children

in Mexico City; donations of $460 • Hats, Scarves & Mittens for Liberty House,

Family Building Blocks, Helping Hands and Union Gospel Mission and donations of $225

• HOME: gifts, essentials and donations of $295 • Marion-Polk Food Share: 306 pounds of peanut

butter and donations of $300 • Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network: bedding,

kitchen items and donations of $325

Dear Church Family, Thank you for keeping my folks in your prayers. Tom & Julie Holmes are no longer homeless. Tom was admitted for physical rehabilitation to help him walk. Doctors continue to seek answers to his stroke-like symptoms, difficulty speaking, breathing and walking. They just passed their 25-year anniversary, making this a wonderful example to my sisters and our families. I am praying you all have a wonderful New Year’s celebration.

Children and Youth A Little Light from Laurie One year ago, the vision for a new parenting class was launched, not because our families NEED it necessarily, but because it presents a new way to bring happiness to the family. As we researched various programs, we looked for a format that presents and provides practice for communication skills that address Christ’s command to love one another. We found that the Strengthening Families program best fits our guidelines. Communication is the key to this class.

Other organizations are running this program as a 10-week course, but feedback we received told us families prefer less of a time commitment. We are trying this out as a one-day workshop, on Sunday, January 12, with the option to add more days if needed.

One of our goals is to provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where families can gather comfortably to interact with each other, as well as with other families. We will provide a nice sit-down meal that does not include fast food. We will do the dishes and even give out prizes.

The staff and volunteers pray that this class will be a blessing to those involved, and that it will be a time well spent to promote good communication within our families and with outside relationships as well. Please join us in this prayer for our families.

Ramblings from Riane “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

We have so much to be thankful for. This week, the youth spent time reflecting over the past year and what in their life they were grateful for. The youth expressed gratitude for family, friends and our church family. During Sunday school, youth recognized those who greatly impact their lives. It is important to tell those in our lives how much they are appreci-ated and we did so by conveying our gratefulness through “Thank you” letters.

The youth are collecting calendars in the youth room to deliver to the elderly with Alzheimers. With the help of Kim Resch, we will distribute the calendars during youth group on Sunday, January 26.

I am looking for adults who are interested in being youth sponsors. This would entail helping with youth events, attending regional events, and acting as mentors. If this is something you would be interested in or would like more information about, please let me know.

Important notice: High school youth attending Snow Rally – we will be meeting at the church Fri-day, January 17, between 3:15 and 3:30 pm to leave for Hood River Valley Christian Church. If you are able, please bring a few dollars for dinner that we will be getting on the way. Also, there will not be youth group on Sunday, January 19.

I would like to thank Julie Towery, Laurie Dyer, and Jackie Hermann for providing lunch for the youth before youth group. We really appreciate the time spent preparing delicious meals for the youth. And thank you to our church family for your wisdom, guidance and support. I am looking forward to experiencing what this New Year has to offer!

May God be with you during the transition back to normal routines at school and work after Christmas break.

This year, in view of Pastor Bob’s sermon on Lay Ministry in the Church, it may be a good time for each of us to re-examine our Spiritual Gifts to see where God is calling us and what He wants us to do in the year ahead.

Your Church library can help with books and Bible study resources on Spiritual Gifts. “Rediscovering Your Spiritual Gifts” by Charles V. Bryant is one such book. Bryant gives in-depth descriptions and biblical foundations of 32 Spiritual Gifts and shows how the gifts of the Holy Spirit can renew individuals and the church.
