Bites of Bread from Bob “Believers Behaving Badly” is one of the subtitles that has been given to the book of I Corinthians. In that church you see evidence of division, squabbles, boasting, immorality and even legal disputes. One of the only things Paul did not list as a problem in Corinth was a lack of passion.

In The Revelation of John we read of the criticism of the church in Laodicea: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm -neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth.” For all the problems the Corinthian church had, they still had passion. I remember hearing Tony Campolo say, “We have sometimes become so emotionally dead that we don’t even commit sin with very much enthusiasm.”

Passion can defined as “intense emotion compelling action.” A church filled with apathetic people won’t have a great deal of conflict, but neither will they accomplish anything great for the Kingdom of God. Maybe the reason we are still reading words written to a church in a town that no longer exists is because their passion compelled them into action for Christ.

Children and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and Youth A Little Light from Laurie Hey! It’s almost October and time to think of Christ-mas! Yes, yes it is. Christine Sinibaldi is beginning to practice the songs for our children’s Christmas program, “Aloha Christmas,” which will be presented on December 15 during the 11:00 am service. Stay tuned for more information to arrive in your mail-boxes.

Also in October, the first through fifth graders will have their annual Christmas store time. This is a chance for our Sunday school students to “Christmas shop” using the tickets they have earned in class. We will have the store open on October 27, from 9:45-10:45 am. After they have shopped, their gifts will be wrapped and then set aside until Christmas time. We decided to do this in October so we aren’t adding to the busy-ness of the Christmas season.

Backing up a bit, coming up on September 28 is a JYF family fishing day with Vern Wolford. He has the equipment and experience. You bring your lunch, appropriate clothing for the weather and get ready for some family fun. Children younger than third grade need to be accompanied by an adult. Please let me know A.S.A.P if you want to join.

Sunday, September 29, is Service Sunday and Camp Sunday. If you have attended church camp, come celebrate with us as we praise God through music and a few words from our campers at 10:00 a.m. We will be sharing our favorite camp memories and “God ex-periences” from camp.

One more note: Churches across the nation have joined together to “Light A Candle For Children,” a forty-day prayer vigil to learn and pray about the needs of children everywhere. Ramblings from Riane This week the youth learned about the negative effects of deception. We discussed the story of Esau and Jacob in the Bible. The eldest son was to receive the blessing and Jacob deceived his father by pretend-ing to be Esau in order to get what he wanted. As a result, Jacob got the blessing but his brother Esau wanted to kill him, so he had to leave his home and his family. There are different ways to work towards what we want and when we turn our trust to God, we may realize that what we want is not always what is best for us.

For the past seven weeks students have chosen a weekly challenge based on the lesson and individual improvements they want to make with themselves that glorify God. This Sunday, September 22, we will have a concluding lesson that addresses the progress we have made individually and as a group.

There will be Sunday School at 9:00 am before the service at 10:00 am on Sunday, September 29. For Service Sunday, the youth are welcome to come with my group to the City Park on River Road to spread bark dust and weed flower beds. We will meet by “Archie” and leave about fifteen minutes after the service.

It has been a blessing serving the youth here at Salem First Christian Church. Watching them grow, open up and learn more about our Lord and Savior has helped me grow in my faith. I have been grateful for the opportunity to spend time with my church family in a spiritual and professional manner. Thank you for all your support!

Available The church still has $17,308 in Oregon tax credits available. The purchase price for all of the credits would be about $12,600. It does not have to be pur-chased in total. Individuals, partnerships or corpora-tions may be eligible to purchase our credits and use them to directly offset Oregon state income taxes. These tax credits are spread over five years and can be used beginning with your income taxes payable for 2013. If you pay quarterly to the state, you could use the credits this year. As an example, if you pur-chase $10,000 worth of credits, it would cost you about $7,300. The first year of credits would provide you with $2,500, the second year $2,500 and each of the next three years, $1,666. The purchase amount comes directly to the church. As a fundraiser for the Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network, Dr. Tony Campolo will be visiting Salem to talk about faith and homelessness in our community. Tony is known as a preacher, educator, and founder of Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education.
