Sunday Sermons at 8:30, 9:30 and 11:00 am

May 26– Pastor Bob Hanna II Corinthians 13:11-14, These are Paul’s closing words to the church at Corinth. Part of Memorial Day is saying good-bye. Paul includes for them to that are worthy of what God has done for them. What are you doing with your life to make it worthy? June 2– Youth Sunday Celebration and Remembering our Baptisms Acts 2:41-42

Bites of Bread from Bob Recently, I have been using this column to write about quotes many have assumed are in the Bible. I have written about “Cleanliness is next to Godliness,” “God will not give you more than you can handle” and “Spare the rod and spoil the child.” This issue will consider the phrase “Everything happens for a reason.” It is often followed with a comment like, “but sometimes I just don’t know what the reason is” or “I may not know the reason but God does and that is all that matters.” Others put it this way: “There are no accidents; everything happens for a reason.” Marilyn Monroe said, “I believe that everything hap-pens for a reason...People change so that you can learn to let go...Things go wrong so that you can appreciate them when they go right...You believe lies so that you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself...And somehow good things fall apart so that better things fall to-gether.”

While this phrase is not in the Bible, many have sup-ported it with Ecclesiastes 3:1 and Romans 12:8. Ec-clesiastes refers to a season for everything. Certainly seasons are in all of our lives, but does that indicate those seasons are coming into our lives for a particu-lar reason? Romans says “All things work together for good for those who love God...” God may take anything that happens in our life and be able to bring something good out of it, but does that mean it hap-pened so something good may come out of it?

The phrase “Everything happens for a reason” can too easily be translated as “It is God’s will.” Every-thing does happen for a reason, but not everything is God’s will. Sin is the most obvious example. It is not God’s will for any of us to sin and yet the scrip-ture reminds us that we have all sinned. When a per-son who has been drinking too much gets in a car and

hits another car head on, the accident happened for a reason, but we can not say it was God’s will. When a child is abused, it happened for a reason, but we can not say it was God’s will. When someone betrays us, it happens for a reason, but we can not say it was God’s will. When some people in the world die of food and water shortages while there is plenty of food and water to feed all people in the world, we can say it happens for a reason, but we can not say it is God’s will. Even when humans collide with nature we need to be careful about saying it is God’s will. When earthquakes happen, like the one in Haiti or more re-cently in Bangladesh, and many die, we can say it happens for a reason, but even then we should be

careful in saying it is God’s will. Yes, God did create an earth with tectonic fault points, but we still need to be care-ful in our analysis.

Many forces are in place that often put our poorest of the poor in the most vulnerable places in houses and buildings unsuitable for sustaining the forces of na-ture. I don’t know enough about meteorology to un-derstand everything that goes into causing the torna-does our country has seen this week, but I can tell you there is a reason they happen. That reason does not mean it is the will of God that people will lose life, home and possessions. Everything happens for a reason, but that does not always mean it is God’s will.

To say that everything happens for a reason is a way of helping us deal with what seems like the random-ness of life. People use it to cope with situations that seem beyond their control. If they sense the bad things have happened in their lives for a purpose, it helps them deal with relationship problems, financial crises, disease, death and even natural disasters. It gives them a sense of purpose and meaning. As Christians, we hold onto the faith that while not eve-rything happening in our life is God’s will, God can take everything and help us benefit from it. We are partially responsible for the benefit we receive from the things that happen in our life. Life can leave us bitter or it can leave us better. How we choose to re-spond to what has happened will make all the differ-ence.

God Bless, Pastor Bob

All of you are in my thoughts often. Thank you for bringing your kids and grandkids back for me to cuddle. I love you, kiddos!

Children and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and YouthChildren and Youth A Little Light from Laurie “My God will meet all your needs. He will meet them in keeping with his wonderful riches that come to you because you belong to Christ Jesus.” This scripture from Philippians 4:19 is the theme for this year’s Va-cation Bible School, SonRise National Park, July 21-25. As we bring a little of the outdoors inside each day, we will explore God’s “True Peace,” “True Riches,” “True Power,” “True Love,” and “True Hope,” through Jesus.

While writing this, my office window is open, allow-ing the outside air and sounds in. My window faces a busy street and often all I can hear is the sound of traf-fic. Today, as I am reading through the scriptures of VBS, suddenly I hear birdsong break through the noise. It reminds me that in our chaotic, noisy lives, Jesus waits patiently to bring us peace, love and hope. We just have to push past the distractions to experi-ence His true beauty. In those moments we truly grasp the riches and power that only He can promise.

Please join me in prayer for this year’s Vacation Bible School: 1) That children will come to know Jesus through the lessons at VBS. 2) That we will glorify God while being a blessing to the families of our church and community. 3) Ask God’s guidance on how you can personally help to achieve these goals.

We are looking for volunteers for decorating and clean up; “Trek Guides”: those who lead the groups to their activities; “Adventure Leaders”: those who lead the Bible center and games; camp cooks, and skit peo-ple. We also need donations and any camping sup-plies, artificial Christmas trees and outdoor-sy, wood-sy stuff we can borrow. Please make sure all items are clearly marked with your name.

Let’s sing praises in His name this VBS and every day!

In His Name, Laurie

Flurries from Chris In preparation for Youth Sunday, June 2nd, I have been asking the youth a number of questions that all boil down to a single point: How do our youth see their participation within the life of the church? You will be able to hear some of their reflections, but what about how we as a church understand the youth’s role within the church?

A few years ago I joined with the elders of the church I was serving at in a study of the book “Kicking Hab-its: Welcome Relief for Addicted Churches” by Tho-mas G. Bandy. Near the beginning of this book it asks a number of questions in the format of a stress test. These questions took often-used statements about the church and reversed them. The readers of the book are asked to record their level of stress on a scale of 1-10. The first statement in this test is “The youth are not the future of your church!” The first time I heard this statement my stress level went through the roof, in part because all my life I have heard a statement that indicated the young people in the church are its future.

Once all the statements were read and results re-corded, as a group we returned to talk about the state-ments. Regarding this one, the group came to the re-alization that the youth are not the future of the church but rather the present of the church. The youth are watching, participating, and discovering what it means to be a part of the church.

What if we adopted an understanding that our youth are a part of the present church even as they are con-tinuing to learn about how our church strives to fulfill its mission? Our youth are already filling roles within our church that are essential to the programs of our church but are not always recognized because they are behind the scenes.

The youth are not the future of the church. They are a part of the present church.

Peace, Chris Snow

Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast Stumped what to do for your dad on Father's Day? Bring Dad and come on down to the church Sunday, June 16, and treat that special guy to a pancake breakfast.

There will be homemade pancakes with all the toppings, savory sausages, fresh fruit and breakfast beverages.

Breakfast will be served from 8:30 am to 11:00 am. This gives you, Dad, and the whole family a chance to attend any and all services that day! (A free-will offering will be taken to cover the cost.)

Worn-out Washing Machine The church's washing machine, used to wash bap-tistry towels and items used in cleaning around the church, has ceased to operate. Due to the need to maintain the supply of cleaning cloths and towels, we have purchased a new washing machine.

If you would like to help pay for the replacement, you may make a contribution specifically for that pur-pose. Mark on your check or contribution envelope “Washing Machine” and it will go to that purpose.

Thanks for your generosity. Property Committee

Blessing of the Bikes Sunday, June 2 12:15 pm, Fellowship Hall

All bikes, motorcycles, scooters, skates… are wel-come. Helmets are required. Light BBQ lunch as simple bike and helmet adjustments are provided. Followed by a blessing of all our summer activities and a bike ride. Donations of bikes and helmets are welcome. Contact Chris Snow with any questions.

Check It Out! Choices. Irene Jones, in her communion message on Pentecost Sunday, spoke about eternity starting with the choices we make each day. The Holy Spirit, which was poured out to all people at Pentecost, em-powers us, even today, to make the choices which allow the fruit of God’s Spirit to grow within us. Max Lucado in his book “When God Whispers Your Name” offers a chapter titled “The Choice,” in which he speaks about our choice to be led by the Spirit each day. Step into the library and read Chapter 11 of his book displayed on the front counter. Take a typed copy of that chapter with you for daily inspiration. Turn to the back counter and notice all the books available about the Holy Spirit. Do Check Them Out!

Fancy Dessert Night Salem Leadership Foundation’s (SLF) Friday June 21 7:00 pm, Salem Convention Center

This 90-minute program of speakers and videos tells the story of how SLF impacts our community; plus, you will get a great dessert.

SLF is a local “grass roots,” non-profit helping to build bridges of communication and collaboration between churches, non-profits, schools, neighbor-hoods, government entities and business.

Sam Skillern, the Executive Director of SLF, has spoken at our church. Scott Bigham, FCC member, is the current board president and I am also a current board member. If you do not know about SLF, come hear about how it impacts our community.

Both Scott and I are responsible for hosting tables at the event and if you are interested in joining our table, please let us know.

Thanks for you support. Rick Ikeda 503-798-7221 or [email protected]

Tornado Response The media has shown us horrendous pictures of devastation from tornados in Texas and Oklahoma.

Two ways you can give through the church include: 1. Week of Compassion: the way our church joins

with others in reaching out with the love of Jesus.

2. We are collecting donations and gift cards for Jaime Van Camp (Allison's niece) who lost every-thing in the tornados. Her house was on the same block as the school that was demolished in Moore, OK. Checks may be made out to FCC Salem.
