Commodores’ Report 1 June 17

Our Klamath Yacht Club Commissioning Day was a great

success. Front page coverage on the Herald and News on 23 May,

2017, and the ensuing article showcased the relaxed and fun

mind-set at the club. I would like to thank all those who brought

their potluck dishes. They really rounded out the Dutch oven

roundup fare. Also, I would like to thank Father Cribben and

Uncle Gene for their fleet blessings. Commissioning Day sets the

stage for a great summer of sailing at KYC.

The Firecracker Regatta is on track for a weekend of exciting

competition and family fun on the weekend of 1-2 July.

Registration forms and Notice to Race are on the KYC

website. Here is the hot tip, save $30 by registering on or

before June 14th. Wow! That’s like two extra limited edition

Firecracker Regatta tee shirts for free! Yes, my friends, sign up

early and save. We still need volunteers. Please get with myself or

Greg to help with Firecracker Regatta. More folks volunteering

mean less work and more fun.

The future of sailing and our club depends on developing new

sailors. Tim Phillips is instructing a youth sailing class July 7-9 at

our KYC for sailors 8-12 years of age. We need at least two club

members to help. One position is contacting youth participants to

remind them of class schedules and what to bring. The other

position is helping on the docks as curriculum meets practical

application meets KYC safety standards. This is a great way to

get in hours and have fun with local youth. Won’t you help?

Please contact Tim at 541-892-4400.

Look forward to enhanced Wi-Fi at your Klamath Yacht Club. I

signed a memorandum of understanding with Cal-OR

communications to install a Wi-Fi box on the dock side of the

building. They will use this box to communicate with residents in

the Lynwood area. We get free Wi-Fi and $50 a month. Thank

Vince and your board of directors for making this great deal a

reality.

Words of thanks also go out to Stephanie and Jennifer for their

hard work planting flowers in time for Commissioning Day and to

Vince, Guy, Brian, Mick and crew for the very nice dock repair in

the corner of the seawall docks and the men of KYC for Mother’s

Day brunch. I would also like to thank Mick for the grounds being

maintained in pristine fashion. One last appreciation goes out to

all the very kind and generous donations to Sarah Haffely

attending America’s Cup as a youth volunteer. Sail Sara Sail!

Okay, I am off to download my Firecracker Regatta registration at

https://kycsail.us/images/scuttlebutt/2017_Registration_only.doc

and send it to Lisa Mulvey. Yep, I just saved $30.

Thanks, Vic and Laura Ford Commodores

Greetings from the Vice

June already; time sure flies when you don’t

have weekends. At least that’s my excuse.

May was very busy with the Mothers Day

brunch and Commissioning Day and a Steak Fry

plus Bob and Shirley’s Great Spaghetti Dinner.

A big thank you to all involved as we had some

great meals. I would name everyone but you

know who they are and see them at every

function or work party. So we’ll save some ink

and not embarrass them. Thanks Again. We

couldn’t do it without you.

Another big thank you to Jim and Geraldine

Wolf and Miss Cindy for cooking burgers for

Wednesday night races. I thought we were

going to have to go to DIY burgers for

Wednesdays but with a little persuasion

(threat), we now have a cook for this series and

possibly next. Thanks Dirk and Phil for stepping

up.

This month we will be just as busy with the

always popular Wood Fired Pizza with Dutch

Oven Deserts on the 10th, a rental on the 17th

(Half Klam Racers please park responsibly),

Indian Tacos on the 23rd, and the Start of the

Firecracker Regatta Brats on the 30th. Please let

us know if you are coming to any of these

events so we can plan accordingly.

Cheers! See ya at the Club! Vince

From the Rear… June 2017 May has been a busy month. Keeping the grounds up is much easier this year than last but still needs to be done on a regular basis. The

boat lot is looking more like a boat “club” rather than a storage lot. Good job for those that have their boats in the water with the intention of

sailing them!

A work party took place the 3rd of June and it was a VERY productive one! We cleaned up the cat harbor, weeded the south jetty, cleaned

up along the south fence line, weeded under the trailers in the trailer lot, cleaned & scrubbed under the deck, cut some errant tree stumps

down, the bolts attached to the angle iron that we are now using as chocks for the boats are free and clear of said bolts (strong work Jim

Lawson!!) and the north ramp dock has been fixed!! New floatation was placed and things were straightened up!! Now when you head north

on the dock you won’t get tossed! Nothing like the appropriate flotation to solve a sinking problem….WOOT!! Many thanks go to: Don

Softly, Jim Lawson, Al Day, Mike Smith, Valerie Morehouse, Stephanie Carpenter, Alexis Mulvey, Jadon Windham, Smokey

Hammack (new member), Glen Sitz, Dan Nygren, Steve Crabb, & Mick & Lisa. Having posted the names above, we’re pretty sure the

median age is about 65! They kicked some serious butt, strong work you guys!! I would also like to plug how GREAT it is to have the trailer

that the mower pulls. It has been invaluable and was an uh-MAZE-ing purchase! :D

Now if you’re thinking to yourself “Self? I am in good shape, I could use the hours and I’m sure they would appreciate my help”, then YES

we could! Please keep in mind that there has been a tremendous amount of work that has gone into getting the grounds and the boat lot to

where it is today, please…if you get something out, put it away. If you dirty it, clean it. If you borrow it, return it. Pick up after

yourself, Yo’ mama don’t live here! See you on WINDS-DAY! Mick & Lisa

Post Script: The Union 36 now resides with its new owner on the coast, she is where she belongs and if his dreams pan out, they will venture on to Costa Rica.

THE END OF AN ERA

by Lisa Mulvey Getting the Union 36 out of Klamath Lake & on to her next adventure was an adventure in and of itself. So many people helped with the removal of her, it would be hard to name you all. Thank you, thank you, thank you! This was a two day process in actuality but it really took more like a couple of months. Organizing the hauler, organizing the removal of the mast organizing the man power, traffic, things needed to do said job etc. etc. It was a good day all in all, we started at Scott Cullen’s on Lakeshore Dr. on Sunday removing the mast. On Monday at 7am bright and early with the wind calm for the moment and the temp hovering around 45 degrees we began the removal of the “pirate ship”. Doveri Crane was ready to pull the Union with the boat hauler on deck waiting for it’s moment. Doveri Crane was phenomenal in the execution of the lift. The boat hauler was just as good in maneuvering to get in place to accept the boat. The hauler itself was somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 + feet so imagine that on Lakeshore Dr. with one blind corner AND the crane AND the boat, all in one small area! Everyone involved was integral in making this happen and we couldn’t be more grateful. Special thanks needs to go to Scott Cullen for all of his time, energy and knowledge and the use of his crane to drop the mast. It takes a village and that was evident on the day of the pull. That’s what it means to be a club, to have people you can count on, to have people that know what they are doing and to be willing to share that knowledge with you. To have friends that are willing to take timeout of their day and to help you when you need help. That my friends, is what it means, it is fellowship in its finest form. Photos Lisa Mulvey

America’s Cup June 17-27: Bermuda submitted by Jim Lawson, Skipper

The America’s Cup preliminary racing has been very interesting to watch on Ch 89 NBCSN (usually at 10:00 am each morning). On Saturday, May 27 there was a somewhat nasty collision that was the result of a leeward boat establishing an overlap under the windward

boat from behind and then “hooking” (luffing) the windward boat. The windward boat for whatever reason was slow to respond and as a result

there was a collision and the windward boat was assessed a penalty. This all happened a little before the start signal, which made it legal. It

would not have been legal after the start signal, because then the boats are subject to a proper course. (There is no proper course before the

start signal.)

In this particular situation, the leeward boat came screaming in on a reach probably going three times faster than the windward boat and

promptly luffed up. Had the windward boat taken some action to give the leeward boat room, it probably would not have been given a

penalty. The windward boat must have known what was going to happen, but apparently was moving so slowly (probably “only” 10 knots) that it

was not able to make much of a course change. (The 2 boats involved were GBR Great Briton and Japan. GBR was the loser.)

What the US Sailing rules state is as follows in reference to AFTER the start signal: Rule 17) If a boat clear astern becomes overlapped

within two of her hull lengths to leeward of a boat on the same tack, she shall not sail above her proper course while they remain on the same

tack and overlapped within that distance, unless in doing so she promptly sails astern of the other boat. (In other words AFTER the start signal, if

you sail under another boat into an overlapped position, you have no luffing rights.)

On the other hand, before the start signal, you may sail under a boat and luff it, but you must give it “room to keep clear” – which is always a

source of debate in these situations. (I realize that the words “to luff” or “luffing” no longer appear in the rule book, but I think many of us still

prefer that language.) ****************************************************

Another situation developed on Monday, May 19. New Zealand was coming into the bottom mark (before the reach to the finish)

on Starboard and had to jibe for the finish. Sweden came flying in on Port and by going wide appeared to give NZ room and opportunity to

jibe, but the judges gave Sweden a penalty, which allowed NZ to finish first. To both the announcers and this viewer, this seemed to be a very

questionable call. Although the boats did not touch each other, apparently the judges felt that NZ was not given enough room to do a smooth

jibe which would keep it on its foils, but had to do more of a crash jibe, which slowed it down.

What the US Sailing rules state in this situation is: Rule 18.4) When an inside overlapped right-of-way boat must gybe at a mark to sail

her proper course, until she gybes she shall sail no farther from the mark than needed to sail that course. It also says rule 18.4 does not apply at a

gate mark – and in this situation it was a gate mark. (When rule 18.4 does apply, it means that if there is an overlap, you will gybe, as soon as is

reasonable or possible.)

On the Road Sailor Was it fun? Submitted by KYC’s roving road warrior, Gerald Pollock This trip was brutal because instead of driving at a leisurely pace of 500 or less miles each day, it became a race to charge across the

country to meet another person’s vacation schedule. Did that person realize that for us to drive from Clarksville, TN, to meet her in

philadephia, we would have to drive [Rand McNally] 869 to get there on time? I doubt if she even cared!

No, it was only fun sometimes. It was a job.

The first day the drive from downtown KF to Provo, Utah, took only 16 hours. When we left on April 13th, my car was covered with ice, and

had to be defrosted in order to see out the windows, and then the weather became worse. In Lakeview, where I stopped to top up the fuel, it

hailed. The hail which was the size of peas became snow, and the snow continued all the way to the outskirts of Salt Lake City.

Two smaller trucks, the ones that contractors use to tow their equipment, had overturned in our lane and their trailers were demolished.

Nothing survived.

When we finally arrived at our hotel, the city had blacked out. After Provo, we overnighted in Denver, CO, and in Topeka, Kansas.

Dennis, my sailing friend of 40 years, had a “TomTom” GPS and I had my “Garmin”. We both upgraded our GPS-s before we left to make

sure that maps of Canada were installed. Both units quit in Missouri but the highway signs got us to Clarksville. The companies only gave

us a western upgrade.

On the way there, we drove through a rain squall and I estimate the winds to be 50 because we had to pull over off the road and wait 20

minutes for the rain to stop.

In Clarksville, I was visiting my Klamath Falls friend, Shane Pierce, who had just returned from a Middle East assignment. Shane is a Special

Forces Paratrooper. After a two-day rest, we headed to Philadelphia. To be continued….

America’s Cup June 17-27: Bermuda I arrive in Bermuda for the final leg of my America's Cup Journey on June 14th! I will be staying with a local 15 minutes from the action and she is going to be showing me around for the first few days. Then the fun begins. My first shift is June 17th! I am on both the on the water branding team (moving marks and advertisements on the water) and the guest services team (greeting people and running the information booth inside the America's Cup Village). I have a total of 12 shifts, which is as many as possible, for the 21 days that I am on the island. When I'm not volunteering I will be exploring the beaches and meeting locals. I have been selected to give an interview about how I got to the America's Cup. In this interview I will be able to explain my story and how Klamath Yacht Club has made this whole dream possible. I really wouldn't be going on this journey without the experiences I have had at the yacht club.

HALF KLAM ‘17 @ Harriman Springs Five boats, one chase boat, three rvs, one cabin, a tent, and one guitar, along with club members, made for a good Half Klam

2017. John and Carmen Pratt, Harriman Springs Resort owners, graciously allowed the club use of the traditional grassy area

next to the water. Race Captain Mick Mulvey oversaw the club’s annual two-day race. While Saturday saw good racing with

wind, Sunday found the racers still sitting near the Rocky Point start line nearly two hours later. What will RC Mick do for 2018?

Commodores’ Report 1 July 17

As I write this month’s submission for the Scuttlebutt the Americas Cup is just finishing. The pendulum swung over to the Kiwi’s. I like that. I did want USA to win of course but now we have something to shoot toward. KYC has a healthy vetting process. Those who want to have input do have input. I see it as a participative process resulting in good decisions. A democracy is not always fast but it is good. Speaking of Regattas, the Firecracker Regatta is [was] this week, June 30th through July 2. We figure 16 boats so far including those extras that show up. The $30 late fee has been waived. Regattas are much work; we do them well. Thanks to all our folks that have volunteered to help. We had a flare-up grilling burgers last week. I would like to thank Dirk and Mick for spending hours cleaning and inspecting the BBQ the following day. Upon inspection we found half the burners unserviceable and the back starting to corrode. We may make it through this year, but probably need to consider purchasing a new BBQ. It gets used much. I have rebuilt them and one thing leads to another, resulting in spending almost as much money as a new one on sale would cost. The future of sailing and our club depends on developing new sailors. Tim Phillips is instructing a youth sailing class July 7-9 at our KYC for sailors 8-12 years of age. We need another club member to help. One position is contacting youth participants to remind them of class schedules and what to bring. The other position is helping on the docks as curriculum meets practical application meets KYC safety standards. This is a great way to get in hours and have fun with local youth. Won’t you help? Please contact Tim at 541-892-4400. Racing at the club remains exciting! Perfect North winds and plenty of boats on the water make for close finishes, especially for those San Juan Fleet 51 sailors. Come on by and bring a friend.

Thanks, Vic and Laura Ford Commodores "It was a day like all days, filled with those events that alter and

From the Rear… Things have been fast paced this month and many things were done. Once again, we had an amazing group of people to finish some of the projects. Many thanks go out to: Marilyn & Bill Kennedy, Al Day, Bob Taysom, Don Softly, Danni Swanson Walt Larson Jim Lawson Stephen King, Teri & John McNamarra, & Lisa… A special thanks to Dirk Williams, who has been working with Mick almost every day leading up to the Firecracker. The regatta was a success, the grounds looked better than they ever have and many compliments went out to the club for the hospitality and welcoming feel we portrayed. WE do a great job. Thank you to all who pulled it together in the end to make it happen! Once again, if there are repairs to be made on your boat, please do the appropriate ground cover (Karl) and pick up after yourself. Yo’ mama don’t live here… Constant Winds, Lisa
