New Orleans – City of Music, Culture and FestivalsThe “cradle of jazz” on the Mississippi

The south of the USA is the destination of our INFORM special this time. New Orleans, the Creole capital of Louisiana, to be precise.

Multicultural History

Originally given the French name of La Nouvelle-Orléans in honour of Philippe II, the Duke of Orléans, the city on the banks of the Mississippi was founded in 1718 and became the capital of Louisiana only four years later in 1722. The multi-cultural character for which New Orleans is known stems from these early days, during which the city passed from French to Spanish rule in 1762. In the year 1795 the Spanish granted the USA residency rights, but in 1800 the then Spanish colony revert-ed to the French again. On December 20th, 1803 the city was handed over to the USA, which had bought the entire territory to the west of the Mis-sissippi for US$15 million.The history of New Orleans is also marked by its close connections to the slave trade. Being a major immigration port meant the city saw the influx of many West Africans who brought their

culture, including the Vodun religion, with them. The resulting French, Spanish, American and African mix gave rise to the cosmopolitan and multilingual charisma that typifies modern-day New Orleans.The famous ‘French Quarter’ – also known as the ‘Vieux Carré’ (old quarter) – is a vibrant blend of Spanish, French, Creole and American architec-ture. Tourists are drawn to its restaurants, shops, bars, clubs and, of course, the legendary Bourbon Street like the proverbial moths to a flame. But New Orleans also has its quiet spots. The tranquil-ity offered by New Orleans’ botanical gardens, for instance, is perfect for recharging depleted batter-ies and admiring more than 2,000 different plants, most of which are native to Louisiana. The huge variety of constantly changing flora also make the botanical gardens a feast for photographers, be they professional or amateur.Located in the city’s Garden District and hailed as ‘The Jewel of America’s Grand Avenues’, St. Charles Avenue is another must-see. The world-famous ‘Saint Charles’ streetcar is a great way to see the magnificent 19th century villas flanking the avenue.

When you think of New Orleans, you think of music – and the music in question is jazz. And when you think of jazz, you think of a name you will find the city has paid ample homage to: its prodigal son, the legendary trumpeter and singer, Louis Armstrong. No surprise, then, to find Louis Armstrong Park, the Satchmo Summer Fest and Louis Armstrong Airport, to name but a few, among the many reminders of the great man.The musical genres that New Orleans has given rise to include Dixieland jazz, with its traditional horn-driven sound, and rhythm ‘n’ blues. Every night of the week, the streets of the Big Easy, how New Orleans is also called, are still alive. But

among all the music festivals and events, there is one known above all others the world over: the Mardi Gras. The tradition of celebrating ‘fat Tues-day’ with a colourful carnival parade stems from Paris. The most diverse music and parade ‘krewes’ toss throws – inexpensive trinkets like beads, cups and doubloons – to the people along the procession routes taken by their flamboyantly decorated floats.With its numerous events, museums, art galleries and the oldest opera house in the USA, New Orleans is sure to accommodate any cultural taste. No other city in the USA is comparable to this exciting metropolis, which is constantly adding new threads to the intricate tapestry of its cultural landscape.

The Big Storm

Footage of the devastation wrought on New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina went around the world in August 2005. Prior to its evacuation on August 28, 2005, some 455,000 inhabitants called the city home.By now, this figure has dropped to 270,000. Many people have either not been able to return for financial reasons, or are too scared of further flooding to chance living in the area again. But despite all this, New Orleans continues to be the pulse of the Mississippi and is keeping its unique history and culture alive.

This dredge is used as a floating platform. With its large pumps it sucks dirt, sand or gravel from the bottom of a waterway.

In the North American market, TITAN winches from ROTZLER are used in a wide range of appli-cations including dredging and drilling. Locat- ed 50 miles east of the City of New Orleans is a company that has specialized in these appli-cations: Hydra Works LLC in Slidell, Louisiana. INFORM talked to the owner, Mr. Gene Bourgeois.

INFORM:Mr. Bourgeois, what is the main focus of your business?

Gene Bourgeois:Hydra Works deals with winches for applications in oilfields, the marine sector, drilling rigs, the mining industry and others, where moving and positioning material is required. Predominantly we sell winches for dredge related applications.

INFORM:Can you tell us something about the history of Hydra Works?

INFORM: In 2005, the New Orleans area was disastrously hit by Hurricane Katrina. How did you personally experience the catastrophe?

Gene Bourgeois: Our city, Slidell, was located much closer to the eye of the hurricane than New Orleans and it was hit much more severely. Like many others, I lost my home in the storm, and had to rebuild. Most of the destruction was cleaned up, but still – four years later – the reconstruction in Slidell, as well as in the whole New Orleans region, is ongoing.

INFORM: Thank you very much for this interview.

Gene Bourgeois:I’ve been in the hydraulic business for 31 years now.Six years ago, I founded Hydra Works. We are a team of 8 and provide all services around winches including field service and repairs.

INFORM:So you are a real expert and well-respected au-thority on winches with so much experience. What is your opinion on TITAN winches?

Gene Bourgeois:TITAN winches are requested wherever exception-al performance with compact design is required. They are well built for marine applications and hold up in salt water environments. Our customers also appreciate the rope storage capacities, the line pull and speed. Some of our customers used other winches and were not satisfied. After they tried ROTZLER’s they exclusively use TITAN winches.

When the dredge is on water, a large metal de-vice called a ladder is extended into the water.On the end of the ladder is a suction hose, as well as a mechanical unit which loosens up the underwater soil. That soil is pumped through the machine and out through tubing which extends onto the shore. As the machine works further and further from shore, as much as 2,500 more feet of tubing can be added.

ROTZLER TITAN winches are used on dredges for several purposes, such as for port and starboard swing of the boom plus the elevation of the ladder hoist. They also can be installed as port spud hoists. However, they must meet strict requirements if the dredge is to be an efficient tool.

way to represent various winches in a display that had originally been designed for single winch operation. The new control unit therefore features a key for switching between the correct operating modes for TREIBMATIC TR 200 and HZ 010 winches. The respective operating mode can be identifi ed by a pictogram shown on the display screen. Another new feature of the display is the speed of the winch, something that was not possible to show before now.

One Hand for Two WinchesPractical dual operation control unit

ROTZLER provides various control units for oper-ating winch systems with several addressable components. The new dual operation module now enables simultaneous operation of two winches, each fi tted with its own controls, using only a single practical standard control unit. Up to now, this required a multifunctional control unit designed for use with complex systems. The biggest challenge in adding the dual function to the compact standard control unit was fi nding a

For applications supporting soft and hard rock mining, ROTZLER provides strong and safe winch sys-tems. ROTZLER supplies the HZ 200 winches to go with a retrieval sys-

tem that was jointly developed by ROTZLER and Sandvik Mining and Construction Canada Inc. for the fl ame-proofed and articulating TS650 SH shield hauler.The TS650 SH is fully fl ameproof, designed to run in explosive gas-eous and coal-dust environments. Weighing in at 55,000 kg, the TS650 SH uses its 1,400-mm fork to carry loads equal to its own weight. The ROTZLER HZ winch was selected as the smallest and low-est weight winch supporting the vehicle.The HZ 200 winch is capable of providing a constant pulling force of 250 kN, which can be nearly doubled to 490 kN with the use of a doubling

snatch block also supplied by ROTZLER. Thanks to its compact body dimensions, it was possible to integrate the winch in-between the vehicle's forks system. Complying with underground safety standards the fully hydraulically operated winch comes with approximately 15 metres of rope.Aside from the joint cooperation between Sandvik Mining and Construction, there are long-time

relationships established between ROTZLER and European Sandvik Business Units deal-ing with drilling rigs and rock drilling.

Following on from a report on bridges in a for-mer issue of INFORM, we now take a look at how tricky it is to maintain these sophisticated architectural structures.

Precariously positioned at the edge of a bridge, a steel giant slowly lowers a long arm over the bridge and comes to rest underneath it to create a platform. An inspection team can then descend to the platform and start inspecting the underside of the bridge. The fascinating machinery that makes this job possible is manufactured by Moog GmbH from Untersiggingen in the Deggenhausertal district near Lake Constance. The company is the leading manufacturer of bridge inspection units and access technology for tunnels. Moog repre-sentations in Hong Kong, China, and Virginia, USA, go to underscore the company’s interna-tional orientation.

A bridge inspection or platform unit takes about three to four months to build. Once all the specifi cations and fi tting options have been clarifi ed, the carrier vehicle is chosen in accordance with customer wishes. Some platform units are directly truck-mounted, while others are trailer-mounted. Excellent pneumatic shock absor-

bers, a low driver’s cab and a strong auxiliary drive are all of great importance when selecting the truck. Furthermore, a HIAB crane fi tted with a ROTZLER TITAN hoisting winch are often part of the specifi cations, too, as was the case with a 16-m platform unit delivered to a customer in

Austria. Suitable for bridge widths up to 16 metres, this trailer-mounted platform unit is capable of bearing loads of up to 800 kg, is designed to enable aerial inspections and comes with addi-tional scaffolding.

“All platform units delivered to Austria include a crane that enables work above the sound barriers, which are several meters in height”, said Christine Moog, general sales manager and daughter of the company’s founder. In Western Europe, the crane solution has proved to be extremely popular, par-ticularly for operations requiring aerial inspection work. “In producing our platform units, we often use our HIAB 026 T model along with a ROTZLER hoisting winch system”, Christine Moog, who holds a degree in engineering, went on to explain. Although the crane is light in weight, it is still ideal for handling heavy loads.

Bridge inspection teams rely heavily on safe and effi cient equipment that can supply the necessary material where it is needed – namely under the bridge. Christine Moog knows that “a crane fi tted with a ROTZLER hoisting winch system simply ticks all the boxes”.

60 Years of Unimog – A Jewel on Four WheelsA legend among utility vehicles

Much like Marilyn Monroe hailed diamonds to be a girl’s best friend in her famous song, so too is the Unimog often referred to as “a man’s best friend”. INFORM wanted to know what makes this legendary vehicle, which has been an automotive success for more than 60 years, so attractive and irresistible.

With its many variations and areas of application, the Unimog – as a contraction of the German for “universal motor machine” – really does its name justice. For instance, Unimogs are just as much used in the fields of agriculture and forestry as they are for military and municipal operations.There is barely an obstacle that a Unimog cannot overcome. The vehicle’s permanent four-wheel drive, 100% climbing power and very high ground clearance mean it can safely traverse rough terrain, including rocks and boulders, and even ford rivers.This is also why the Unimog is so popular for ral-lies and safaris, in which the “adventure” factor naturally plays an important part for the drivers. Kitted out with special equipment and bodywork, these vehicles turn into real miracle workers. For instance, in 1982 history was made when two Unimogs came in both first and second at the Paris-Dakar rally in the truck rating. Another fan-tastic victory was won at the Dresden-Breslau rally in 2008 when a Unimog easily took first place in the overall rating and outperformed almost 200 other competitors. New Steelwork Department Optimises Throughput TimesROTZLER invests in the future of the company

ROTZLER attaches great importance to constantly optimising company processes and this latest strategic decision is an investment into the core competence of the company, to quote CEO Juer-gen Rotzler on the new steelwork department at the Steinen site. “The new department will enable us both to produce our high-quality and complex steel structures at short notice and integrate them into the production of winches, systems and vehicle bodies. That also means we can now respond even more quickly to the requirements of our customers in very diverse markets,” Juergen Rotzler explained. In addition to ensuring greater planning reliability, the new department will neces-sarily improve both company efficiency and effectiveness – and thus strengthen our competi-

tiveness. As the head of a team of 10 employees, master craftsman Lothar Schneider ensures just-in-time supply of any structural steelwork needed for further production.

This particularly applies to manufacturing high-quality parts in small lots or even one-off parts. A shift work system ensures the department can provide the requisite service at all times.Among others, the investments made into the department include a brand new state-of-the-art machining centre for milling work to replace the conventional boring and milling machine used before. ROTZLER has already used a welding robot for producing precision parts for many years and has now added a second workstation to increase both capacity and speed. All welding processes are carried out in line with the international DIN EN ISO 3834-2 quality standard, in accordance with which ROTZLER has been certified since 2006.Customers will benefit from these investments in the form of quicker deliveries, even if larger lot sizes are required. In addition, vehicles brought to the Steinen site for kitting out will be ready that much sooner.

Music Class for Steinen Primary School

This kind of music education makes it possible to spot talent in children at an early age that would perhaps otherwise have no access to musical mentoring, as also shown by the positive results achieved at other schools, for instance with children suffering from speech problems or who speak German as a second language. In addition, making music in a group helps chil-dren to improve their ability to concentrate and boosts their social skills. The low-cost facility planned by the primary school is also directed at families who would otherwise not be able to afford musical tuition for their children for financial reasons. Renate Schulze-Schyja, Deputy Headmistress of the primary school in Steinen, and Susanne Kagerer, teacher at the ‘Mittleres Wiesental’ music school, were delighted to receive a gift of musical instruments for a new project at the school, all made possible by the financial support of the local winch manufacturer, ROTZLER.

Musical tuition for strings is set to begin after the summer holidays in 2009. The idea is to give 20 (second-year and above) pupils an opportunity to learn to play the violin, viola, cello or double bass. In cooperation with the ‘Mittleres Wiesental’ music school, a holistic concept was developed for this special project. Another one of ROTZLER’s long-standing employ-ees recently left the company to take his well-earned retirement. After 33 years of working for the company, it was time for Hans Guth (63) to down tools for the very last time. During a small leaving party held in honour of the highly popular and esteemed employee, CEO Juergen Rotzler as well as managers and employees looked back on Hans Guth’s career and thanked him for his many years of service and cooperative, helpful manner. Hans Guth began his time at ROTZLER in January 1976 as a locksmith in the winch assembly depart-ment. Soon afterwards he switched to the testing department, which maintained an outpost at the old Kleinkems quarry near the small town of Efringen-Kirchen in the far south of Germany. On Track for RetirementHans Guth leaves ROTZLER after 33 years of service

their paces by Hans Guth and his colleagues with a view to ensuring the company’s high quality standards were always met. From 1994 onwards, he was responsible for managing and ensuring the availability of trade fair exhibits. Thanks to his calm and careful nature, he always succeeded in completing ROTZLER exhibits on time for numerous international fairs around the world. At many exhibitions, for instance in Munich, Hanover and Paris, he even supervised the necessary construction work on-site at the trade fair centre. For his retirement, Hans Guth has taken up a hobby that is just as much interesting as it is time-consuming: a model railway. As a permanent reminder of his colleagues and time at ROTZLER, he was presented with a model ROTZLER carriage featuring a crane and a winch.
