PP Rick Amsberry led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Afrizo singers led The Star Spangled Banner. Mark Kashar, assisted by Jeff McNaughton with the mike, intro-duced our visitors and guests, including PDG Linda Elliott, PDG Ean Sullivan and DG Bill Dendy. Teri Thomas introduced our Mar-ketplace Advertiser of the week. President Eric explained that World Polio Day is hoped to call attention to how close the elimination of polio is to being accomplished. Currently, only three countries have new cases of polio.

Kathy Schatz introduced our speaker today, Paul Alexander, who contracted polio at the age of six and who has spent over sixty years in an iron lung. Kathy and her hus-band DG Bill Dendy asked Paul questions

dents took care of him for two weeks until a caretaker could be found. He said that he was determined to succeed. He said that the worst time was when he was in Parkland Hos-pital as a child. He could not see out of the tent over his head on the iron lung; he could not talk, and felt very isolated. He was in a ward filled with other children in iron lungs, but unless you looked at just the right time and the child next to you looked, too, there was no contact. Many of the children died. He said he never got to go to school until he went to SMU. He said that he was glad that Rotary had targeted polio to eradicate; it was his num-ber one enemy. He was asked if there have been improvements in the iron lung. He said

about his parti-cular challen-ges and accom-plishments. He said that he is able to take his iron lung with

him when he goes away from home. He atten-ded UT-Austin in an iron lung. He said he got there, but the person who was supposed to care for him did not show up. The other stu-

there have been, but he prefers the one that he has. PP Greg Pape recognized Paul as an Honorary Paul Harris Fellow.

Frank Lloyd, Associate Dean of Executive Education for the Cox School of Business at SMU introduced the Afrizo singers, students at Daystar

University, a nondenominational Christian uni-versity in Nairobi, Kenya. The students are touring the United States to help raise funds for their university.

Interactors hear facts, history of Polio, Rotary efforts to End Polio Now

Students of our Hillcrest Interact Club participated in World Polio Day listening to a program and presentation by our own Park Cities Rotary member and District First Lady, Kathy Schatz. The kids learned the history of Polio -- most meaningfully, its impact right here in Dallas -- and its devastating effects on the lives of young Americans in the early part of the 20th century, and how the plague contin-ues to this day in the poorest of the world's countries. The kids also heard of the heroic and persistent efforts of Rota-ry to eradicate this dreaded disease, and how the campaign of awareness, fundraising and action of End Polio Now is working throughout the world to bridge the gap.

The kids took up the challenge, asking what they could do, and committing the club to donate $1,000 by May 1,
