President Richard Stanford called the meeting to order. John Brown gave the invo-cation, noting that Susan Donnenfield is recovering from surgery at SW Medical School; please keep her in your prayers. A Joy today is that E.G. McMillan said that he has had a very positive report regarding his cancer. Catherine Anderson led the Pledge of Alle-giance and “The Star Spangled Banner.” Our visitors and guests were introduced, including a visiting Rotarian who is moving to Dallas. Herb Ziev introduced our Marketplace Adver-tiser of the week, Chris McNeill, an attorney with Block Garden & McNeill. PE Barb Jeff-ries reported that the RCPC Foundation cur-rently has about $1.4 million. The Foundation met and approved two grants of $2,500 each; one to Attitudes and Attire and one to the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance. She said that they have $11,000 remaining to be given this year in grants. Sgt-at-Arms Cindy Cummings re-minded everyone that their “voluntary” contri-bution is due in their birthday month, but can be made at any time. Mary Bishop reminded members to RSVP for the Holiday Party and then to pay online. She said that the food would be provided by Al's Barbecue and that the bris-ket would be carved at the party. Happy Franklin explained the Rotary Bequest Soci-ety which requires including Rotary in your es-tate planning. PP Pam Carvey announced the next PCR Connect on Thursday, Dec. 19; it will be a breakfast meeting at Flying Fish in Preston Center. President Richard reviewed the Christmas service events remaining.

Dan Drabinski introduced our speaker today, Dr. Ronan Kelly, Chief of Oncology at Baylor Scott and White Hospital. He began by saying that can-

immune cells to fight cancer cells. They are trying to link all of the BSWH Centers through-out Texas around a common strategy. They are caring for every patient and learning from every patient. They want to know why in some people the immune cells do not get turned on and why some get suppressed by cancer cells. Nothing is as amazing as immune cells. They want to create an army of super-immune cells, then infuse them back into the patient. Cancer is increasing in the population but the population is aging. Immunotherapy is the fourth defense against cancer. The immune cells surround the cancer cell and kill it. They want to try to make an immune memory, like a vaccination to fight cancer before it starts. Cancer is a disease at the cellular level. Cur-rently, there are 350 new drugs to fight can-cer. They need to bring the price of immuno-therapy drugs down. The most famous patient is former President Carter who had advanced melanoma which had advanced into his brain and bones. He was treated with an immuno-therapy drug and is now cancer-free. Many patients with advanced cancers are alive five years later without cancer. They are just scrat-ching the surface of what is understood in-side the body . Immunotherapy drugs attack the cancer cells but the cancer cells put up defenses. Living drugs are able to take out those defenses. Real world patient data should be used to define trial strategies rather than relying on pre-clinical data. They want to keep track of pa-tients four times a year to track immune cells. They will use computer analysis to compare the data. When people get off can-cer drugs, they may get other treatment which may affect the immune system.

THOUGHTS ON . . .

A true friend is the greatest of all blessings, and that which we take the least care of all to acquire.

~ F. de La RochefoucauldReflect on your present blessings, of which every man has many; not on your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.

~ Charles DickensJust to be is a blessing. Just to live is holy.

~ Rabbi Abraham HeschelFor today and its blessings, I owe the world an attitude of gratitude.

~ Clarence E. HodgesI think it's absolutely a blessing when you just know what your purpose is and your destiny. I don't think it's a curse at all.

~ Lady GagaMen are slower to recognize bless-ings than misfortunes.

~ Titus LiviusLiving in the moment brings you a sense of reverence for all of life's blessings. ~ Oprah WinfreyThe hardest arithmetic to master is that which enables us to count our blessings. ~ Eric Hoffer

As we enter this season of counting bless-ings and remembering friends and family, we are reminded of the incredible opportunities we as Rotarians have to share our joys and change lives! It's a perfect time for each of us to consi-der “why Rotary?” What is it that Rotary can accomplish and inspires each of us to do?

And so we announce a contest to chal-lenge each of us to reflect “why Rotary?” In 50 words or less, you can capture your feelings about Rotary. The contest is open and will run through March 5.

The winner gets free admission to the

ʻWhy Rotaryʼ Campaign from DG Beverly GroganFoundation Gala to be held March 28. But we will all be winners, as this can become your new “elevator” recruitment speech. Click https:// rotary5810.org/page/why-rotary-challenge/ to submit your Why Rotary story.

So count your blessings, cherish the mem-ories you'll make this holiday season, and be-gin defining in your own words, “Why Rotary? “

Blessings to you all. Thanks for all that you do, and make this

season amazing! See you at the District Holi-day Party December 10!DG Beverly Grogan

At the Little League meeting the coach called over little Joey, bends down, looks him in the eye and says, “You know the principles of good sportsmanship, correct? You know Lit-tle League doesnʼt allow temper tantrums, shouting at the umpire or abusive language.”

“Yes, sir, I understand.”“Good, Joey. Now would you go and

explain that to your father.”
