Mykonos Island is a global tourist destination. One of the most famous beaches of the island is ‘Paraga’. Nearby exists the largest open swimming pool with salty water in Europe (26.000 sq.ft) inside the SantAnna multiplex holiday resort. The coating applied inside the pool and on the surrounding area is micro-terrazzo with the use of the high performance hydraulic binder NOVACEM CREATIVE. The use of these ‘pebble coatings’ combined with the water and natural sunlight ‘transforms’ the internal area of a swimming pool to a surface which simulates a beachside front. In addition to this we can imitate nature by creating uniform coatings with patterns like rocky or natural stones landscape.

These ‘flexible’, in terms of design possibilities, decorative coatings PLANOCOLOR TERRAZZO provide ideal solution for constructions such as:

• Pedestrian walkways, squares and communal areas• Verandas, gardens, surrounding dwellings, hotels, theme parks, shopping centres• Car parking areas, access ramps • Benches, platforms, troughs, pots, prefabricated elements • Swimming pools, fountains and in general landscaping constructions containing water • Marinas and structures in coastal areas• Terrazzo floor and wall coatings, with the use of natural stone and/or crystal granulates • Horizontal and vertical surfaces that we want to resemble the natural relief such as rocks, stone, beaches, lakes

High aesthetics and integration of construction into the natural environment …

The great advantage of these coatings, comparing to the standard industrial made coverings, is that while the latter are designed, away from the application area, PLANOCOLOR TERRAZZO coatings are designed according to the specific requirements of the project, using in some cases, even raw materials from the area. This is achieved because these coatings are provided in the form of binder in powder form (NOVACEM CREATIVE), which is mixed with pigments, pebbles and granulates according to the requirements of each application. The PLANOCOLOR TERRAZZO coatings obtain the following characteristics:

• Strength similar to high quality concrete (Compressive strength >30 - 45 MPa) • Ability to receive light traffic after 12 hours • Ability to receive swimming pool water after 48 hours• Anti-slip or polished texture of the surface • Resistance to frost and adverse weather conditions • Resistance to acidic and common detergents • Small thickness: from 5 - 20 mm ideal for renovations• No requirement for iron or fiber reinforcement till the thickness of 20 mm• Combination with other building systems such as waterproofing, microcement coatings and ‘stone carpet’ coverings• Ability to be mixed with marble, quartz or glass granulates, and ‘different’ materials such as wood, metal, pebbles, shells and cement-compatible aggregates

CHARACTERISTICS & ADVANTAGES

Application procedure

• Substrate: the substrate has to be compact, rigid and free of cracks. On external floors and wet areas it is recommended to waterproof the substrate with the flexible cement based compounds NOVAMIX SC 200 PENETRATE (for absorbent substrate) or NOVAMIX SC ELASTIC (for non absorbent substrate). In order to use an alternative waterproofing compound or system, a laboratory compatibility test is required. • Mixing: the PLANOCOLOR TERRAZZO coatings are produced by mixing the cement based hydraulic binders NOVACEM CREATIVE (walls and floors) or NOVACEM CREATIVE FLOOR (floors and skirtings), with compatible to cement aggregates and pigments, if required. The mixing ratio is 25 - 35% by weight of NOVACEM CREATIVE with 75 - 65% by weight of aggregates and water 14 - 18% by weight. Compatible pigments, if a special color is required, are the NOVACOLOR OXIDE and granulates which can be used are: PLANOCOLOR GRANIT S (uncoated silica sand), NX Q (uncoated silica sand compilations), NX MR (uncoated marble granulates) or RC GLASS (recycled glass granulates). It is not recommended to use coated granulates on floors and on walls a compatibility test is required. The choice of aggregates depends not only on the aesthetic appearance but also on the type and use (in example, requirement for resistance to acid, friction, UV radiation).• Application of the mix: the application is done like a common plaster or screed (introducing guides, creating joints etc.) and according to the rules related to the proper application of cement-based mortars (curing in humid environment, avoid fast drying etc). Existing expansion joints on the substrate should be continued on the coating’s surface (normally every 25m2 or every 4-5 linear meters). In internal areas the maximum distance without expansion joint is 5 - 7 linear meters, depending also on the use of the area. • ‘Shaping’ of the final surface: After the mixture has been laid, application of the ‘double action’ surface retarder PLANOCOLOR CRT 052 is recommended. The PLANOCOLOR CRT 052 stops the curing process of the mortar only on the surface, making the subsequent cleaning of the surface easy. In this way it functions also as a surface protection against fast hydration of the surface during the first hours, which frequently causes superficial cracks (double action). PLANOCOLOR CRT 052 has a light purple color in order to help the applicator to control the coverage. After 12 - 24 hours the purple film is removed by means of water-jet (100 - 150bar) or power brush and water and reveals the granulates ‘hidden’ inside the mortar, providing an anti-slip terrazzo coating of high aesthetics. Alternatively if we don’t use the PLANOCOLOR CRT 052, the ‘washing’ process can be done with water and/or acidic detergent like NOVAMIX ACID CLEAN. The right moment to start the washing process depends on ambient temperature, humidity and mortar mix. This application requires to observe the surface continuously. The use of PLANOCOLOR CRT 052 facilitates significantly the ‘washing’ process.• Polished or smooth surface finish: in cases where the requirement is for a polished or smooth surface, like in example swimming pool walls, benches or internal floors, the coating can receive polishing by means of rotary machine with diamond discs, after 24 hours. • Surface sealing: the final surface protection against stains depends on the type of application. On external floors it is recommended to use a waterproofing agent like NOVAMIX PROTECT 100 (silicone based waterproofing) or NOVAMIX PROTECT 200 (siloxane based protection against water and oily stains). In internal dry areas the use of a sealer like NOVAMIX DRY BRIGHT or PLANOFINISH PU 2KW MAT might be required. Inside swimming poos no sealer is recommended. The final choice depends on many factors like the mixture, the texture of the final surface and the use.
