Venezuela’s president goescloud bombing to ease drought

CARACAS, 16 Nov—Venezuela’s president HugoChavez has said he will join a team of Cuban scien-tists on flights to “bomb clouds” to create rain amida severe drought that has aroused public anger dueto water and electricity rationing.

Chavez, who has asked Venezuelans to take three-minute showers to save water, said the Cubans hadarrived in Venezuela and were preparing to fly spe-cially equipped aircraft above the Orinoco river.

“I’m going in a plane; any cloud that crosses me,I’ll zap it so that it rains,” Chavez said at a ceremonylate on Saturday with family members of five Cu-bans convicted of spying in the United States.

Many countries have programmes aimed at alter-ing weather patterns, commonly known as cloudseeding, although the effectiveness of such tech-niques is disputed.

Firing silver iodine at clouds is one commonmethod. China uses rockets loaded with the chemi-cal to spur rainfall in arid regions. Chavez did notsay what technology the Cubans will use.—Internet

Ever more Mexicanchildren learn Chinese

MEXICO CITY, 16 Nov—Ever more Mexicanchildren are learning Chinese as the third language, after most Mexicans’ mother tongue Spanish andEnglish, pushed by parents who believe it will bethe language of the future.

Some senior Mexicans often say something “estaen Chino” (is in Chinese), meaning that it is hardto understand. But things are different nowadays— more and more Mexicans are able to understand, even write the “mysterious oriental language.”

Abel Martinez, an eight-year-old boy, studiesat Huaxia Chinese Culture Institute (ICCH), say-ing that he began to learn Chinese atage four andthat he liked Chinese martial arts.

During a recent interview with Xinhua, Abelwrote many Chinese words with good handwrit-ing. His sister, Samantha Martinez, a girl with beau-tiful eyes, also studies Chinese with her brother.

Supported by native Chinese teachers, manyMexican children cannot only learn the languageand calligraphy, but also China’s history and cus-toms in an enjoyable way. They also take part incompetitions and festivals associated with Chinesetraditional culture.

The original idea of the ICCH, which works withChina’s embassy in Mexico, was to teach overseasChinese children, but now 90 percent of the stu-dents are Mexicans, from all age groups.

A fever for the Chinese culture—covering finearts, foods, martial arts and its language—began adecade ago in Mexico.—Xinhua

Thinking of loved ones helps reduce painLOS ANGELES, 16 Nov — The mere

thought of loved ones can help reducepain, a new study suggests.

This underscores the importance ofsocial relationships and staying sociallyconnected, according to the study con-ducted by researchers at the Universityof California in Los Angeles (UCLA).

In the study, the researchers asked25 women whether simply looking at aphotograph of their loved ones can re-duce pain.

The participants had boyfriends withwhom they had been in a good rela-tionship for more than six months.

The women received moderatelypainful heat stimuli to their forearms

while they went through a number ofdifferent conditions. In one set of con-ditions, they viewed photographs of theirboyfriend, a stranger and a chair.

“When the women were just look-ing at pictures of their partner, they ac-tually reported less pain to the heatstimuli than when they were looking atpictures of an object or pictures of astranger,” said study co-author NaomiEisenberger, assistant professor of psy-chology and director of UCLA’s Socialand Affective Neuroscience Laboratory.“Thus, the mere reminder of one’s part-ner through a simple photograph wascapable of reducing pain.”

Climate change killingsea turtles

Climate change threatens the ex-tinction of leatherback sea turtles thathave called the Pacific Ocean homefor 150 million years, scientists said.

Warmer temperatures and risingseas are further reducing turtlepopulations already devastated bybeach development, net fishing andrestaurants that consider turtle eggsa delicacy.

Just 32 leatherbacks were seendigging nests last year on a beach atLeatherback Sea Turtle NationalPark, Playa Grande, Costa Rica, where the park’s turtle museum wasabandoned three years ago and nowis surrounded by weeds.

“We do not promote this as a turtletourism destination anymorebecause we realize there are far toofew turtles to please,” AlvaroFonseca, a park ranger, told The NewYork Times in a story published.

Moving eggs to hatcheries and ar-tificially cooling nests with shade orirrigation may only help temporarilysince sea turtles feed on reefs, whichare dying in warmer, more acidicseas, wildlife experts said.
