Wagaung, the 5th month of Myanmar calen-dar, has its literal meaning “the mid month of Bud-dhist Lent”, the peak of monsoon. Non-stop rain fillsup and spills over all water bodies causing floods.Paddy planters are doing their job in full swingregardless of foul weather. Ground lilies (Crinumamoenum) of all varieties spring up with blooms ofcolourful hues and fragrance everywhere in the coun-try, deserving the status of the designated flower ofthis month, in Myanmar tradition. With the zodiacalsign of lion, this month is astrologically named Simha(Leo). Due to overcast sky, heavenly bodies are notvisible. But astrologers say that in daytime, the sunand asterism Hpou Sha and at night the moon andasterism Tharawun appear astride.

“Sayetan Pwe” is the traditional monthly fes-tival of Wagaung. Freely translated into English, it isthe festival of charity by casting lots. Sayetans are lotsto draw to choose recipient monk of food, religiousgift or alms in a religious offering. This custom ofcasting lots in religious charity originates in thelifetime of Gotama Buddha.

While Lord Buddha was residing in WeiluwunVihara at the capital Yazagyoe, there was the time ofscarcity of food. Buddhist devotees could no longerprovide alms food for all monks of the Vihara. Somewanted to select ten to twenty monks to offer food. Some wanted to provide food only on sabbath days. Some preferred to cast lots to decide recipient monks. Finally they referred the matter to Lord Buddha whoexpounded seven different modes of offering food tomonks. They are as follows:-

1. Sangha-bhat which is the food offered to allmonks.

2. Uddesa-bhat which is the food offered particu-larly to one or two monks.

3. Nimantana-bhat which is the food offered to theinvited monks.

4. Salaka-bhat which is the food offered to themonks chosen by casting lots.

5. Pakkhika-bhat which is the food offered to themonks on the waxing and waning moon days.

6. Uposathika-bhat which is the food offered to themonks on the Sabbath day and

7. Patipadika-bath which is the food offered to the

monks on the day after the Sabbath day.Lord Buddha then said that He approved all of

them. Since that time, offering of food to the monks bycasting lots became a common practice among theBuddhists.

With the permission and at the direction of LordBuddha, the monks chose one monk from amongthemselves and appointed him “Bhattuddesaka” themonk who was in charge of alloting food offered bydonors. This monk must have special qualificationssuch as good health, activeness, managerial skill, free-dom from biases and prejudices, being able to keepcorrect list of allotted and unalotted monks. The first“Bhattuddesaka” was Maha Thera Ashin Datba. Hedischarged the duty of alloting Uddesa-bhat, Nimanta-bhat and Salaka-bhat, with fairness and correctness.

The lots are either wooden or bamboo slats, strips or palm pei leaves on which names and addressesof the donors of food are scribed. They are put into abasket which is shaken upside down many times sothat the lots are shuffled up. Monks queue up accordingto their serial numbers or the seniority of their or-dained years to draw the lot. Then, they go to thehouses as directed by their lots to partake of the foodoffered there. Originally, there was no rule fixingmonth, venue and date for casting lot. Myanmar Kingschose Wagaung as the month for performing thisreligious function because monks observing Lent vowsand residing together in the same monastery mighthave difficulty in receiving enough food in Wagaung.Originally, casting lots was to provide food to monks. But, later all four basic needs of monks (Satupyitsaya— food, robe, shelter and medicine) are also, some-times, donated by casting lots.

The earliest evidence of food offering to themonks by lots casting is found in the stone inscriptionsat old Bagan. In lines 22 and 23 of Saw Hla Win pagodainscriptions of A.D. 1268, 1290 and 1291, there wasmention of Sayetan (casting lots). King Thihathu (A.D.1298-1312) of Pinya dynasty built a big wooden mon-astery and offered it to a monk named Hsu Twin PyitSayadaw as he was tested proved a learned monk ofhigh education. But, the Sayadaw advised the king todonate the monastery by casting lots. From that timebegan the festival of charity by casting lots.

Later, in the reign of King Tha Lun (A.D. 1629-48) of Nyaung Yan dynasty, most venerable monkShwe Umin Sayadaw of Pakhan Gyi translated twoPali treatises — Culava pali nisaya and Culava paliAthakatha nisaya — into Myanmar. In them, hetranslated two Pali words “Salaka” and “Bhatta” as“Sayey Tan” and “Hswan”, two Myanmar words.Salaka means wooden or bamboo sticks on whichletters are scribed and bhatta means “hswan”, foodfor monks.

Myanmar literature of later periods made ref-erences to the charity by casting lots festival. Thisfestival is sung in many forms of classical songs.Eminent poets and playwrights such as U Yar, Lu UMin, Hpo Thudaw U Min, Mei Kway, U Hpyey and UPonnya mention this festival in their verses and plays. On page 229 of one Myanmar chronicle entitled“Konbaungset Maha Yazawun Tawgyi” Volume 2,the holding of the casting lots festival at the palace ofKing Bagyidaw (A.D. 1819-37) was recorded asfollows:-

“On the 8th waning moon day of Wagaung, village monks and forest monks were invited to thepalace. Eight priestly utensils and other offertorieswere arranged on two hundred and sixty padaythapins(wooden frames in the design of a tree). Their majes-ties the king and chief queen donated them to theinvited monks and they poured libation water. Theirmajesties next offered Salakabhat Sayeytan hswan(food for monks) to the monks.”

In all Myanmar religious functions, a festivemood is created by the gathering of lay devoteesdressed in their finery, and dainty damsels carryingoffertories on their heads, followed by parties ofmerry-maker youths who joyously sing, dance andplay folk music of dho bat, ozi and byaw which befitthe occasion.

The full moon day of Wagaung is designated asthe Day of Metta Sutta, one of the Suttas in BuddhaParitta. By chanting or reciting Metta Sutta, you sendout to all sentient beings messages of your loving-kindness, compassion and goodwill. All who receiveyour good messages, reciprocate the same to you.You are immune from all dangers. You have noenemies, you have only friends.

I boughtit at 9th Mile factory.Previously, I used draughtcattle to plough my fields, and it was very difficultfor me to plough an acrein a day. Now, I use thispower-tiller and I canplough three acres a day.It consumes only one

bottle of diesel an hour.We work nine hours a dayand it consumes only oneand a half gallons ofdiesel. I use two units, soI can plough six acres aday. So, using power-tillers saves a lot of timeand labour.

“We complete ourwork in a short time. One-wheel power-tillers workvery well. It is easy todismantle and fit ittogether. It takes amechanic only about anhour to repair a break-down power tiller. Tractorsare far more effective, butwe have to do a lot of extra

work if we use a tractor. So, we choose power-tiller. A power-tiller iswell enough to plough20 acres of paddy fields. Now, I completeploughing fields earlierthan I did previously. Itcosts about 15,000 kyatsif I plough an acre offield with draught cattle.Using a power-tillersaves half of theexpenses. So, I wouldsay farmers can makegreater profits if they usepower-tillers.”

LOS ANGELES, 4 Aug—Vitamin D deficiency isassociated with anincreased incidence of riskfactors for cardiovascularproblems such as heartattack and stroke in kids, two new studies find.

The two studies, published in the 3 Augonline edition of Pediatrics, used US data from the2001-2004 National Healthand Nutrition ExaminationSurvey.

There was a clearassociation with

cardiovascular risk factors. The 25 percent ofyoungsters with the lowestlevels of vitamin D were2.36 times more likely tohave high blood pressure,54 percent more likely tohave low HDL cholesterollevels, 2.54 times morelikely to have elevated bloodsugar levels and 3.88 timesmore likely to havemetabolic syndrome, aconstellation of risk factorsincluding obesity, highblood fats and high bloodpressure, the two studies

show. While previousstudies have linked vitaminD deficiency to increasedrisk in American adults,“few studies have looked atwhether vitamin D can beassociated with increasedcardiovascular disease inchildren,” said Jared P Reis, who began his study whileat Johns HopkinsUniversity. US study shows exercise benefitsleukemia patients

WASHINGTON, 4 Aug— One of the most bothersome symptoms of leukemia isextreme fatigue, and asking these patients to exercise doesn’t sound like a way tohelp them feel better. A new study released Monday from the University of NorthCarolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill indicates that exercise may be a great way to do justthat, combating the debilitating fatigue that these patients experience.

In a first-of-its-kind clinical trial, a team of researchers from the Department ofExercise and Sport Science and UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Centerhave shown that physical activity can significantly improve symptoms of fatigueand depression, increase cardiovascular endurance and maintain quality of life foradult patients undergoing treatment for leukemia.

A total of 10 patients undergoing treatment participated in the EQUAL (Exerciseand Quality of Life in Leukemia/ Lymphoma Patients) study. Each patient wasprovided with specially-treated exercise equipment to minimize the risk ofinfection. They participated in an individualized exercise session while in thehospital for the 3-5 weeks of the induction phase of leukemia treatment.—Internet

led by Manuela Baccarini, scientist ofthe Centre for Molecular Biology of theUniversity of Vienna, has found theground mechanism of skin cancer suchas the melanoma, providing newpossibilities for skin cancer treatment, said a study released on Monday.

According to the study, the scientistshave cracked the “proto-oncogene,” atransmission channel for the “Ras” signal.Their studies suggest that skin cancer iscaused by the “Raf-1” protein that prevents

cells differentiating into skin cells.“Ras” is a kind of protein, which is

like a regulator under normalcircumstances, regulating many signaltransmission process in the cells. Butwhen this protein is interfered, it willhelp to canceration, leading to skincancers like melanoma. Differentiationor external influence is the cause for theinterference in “Ras.”

The unrestricted increase of skincells, or proliferation, is the premise ofskin cancer. —Internet

“In terms of England, I’ve never experienced atime when I have gone into matches feeling asconfident as I do now,”Chelsea midfielder Lampardtold the Sun.“The contrast with before is stark. Before, we felt we would probably lose or droppoints and it gives you a really good sensationgoing into the season to feel so optimistic about thechallenges ahead with club and country.

“I’m wary of falling into the trap where peopleask if you can win it, you say you can, and thenexpectations rise.“Of course we can win it, though. We are playing as well as we have done for a longtime and there is a real confidence and togethernessabout the group.”

England’s only previous World Cup successcame in 1966 and they haven’t even reached thesemi-finals since 1990.But Lampard expectsEngland to be a much tougher proposition foropponents now Capello has helped them develop amore ruthless streak.—Internet
