Greetings to all in the Name of the Risen Lord!May our worship celebrate the joy and hope, peace and presence, of our Lord Jesus Christ, raised to life for us. We welcome all, especially our guests. If you do not have a church home please consider Divine Shepherd. We would love to have you as part of our family. Please take a minute and sign our guest book.

A prayer before WorshipThis is the day you have made, O Lord Jesus, a day of new life and eternal celebration! The stone is moved; death is defeated; heaven is open. As Your disciples first saw and believed Your victory over the tomb, so give us joy in the promise You made and keep for us: because You live, we live also! Amen.

The Lord’s SupperThe Lord’s Supper is celebrated in the confession and gladness that, as our Lord says, He gives into our mouth not only bread and wine but His very body and blood to eat and drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with Him and with one another. Our Lord Jesus invites to His table those who trust His Words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us, that they may show forth His death until He comes.

Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the blood of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. (1 Cor 11:28 ESV) Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar.  Any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or hold a confession differing from that of the Holy Scriptures, this congregation, and the Lutheran Church~Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked to speak with Pastor Sturzenbecher.

Members and guests of DSLC and School we stream our services through Facebook Live. With this stream we do publish this to our Facebook page which means your face may end up on our Facebook page. If you are not comfortable with this, please talk to Pastor to address this concern. -Thank you, The AV Team.

Invocation & ExhortationP In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the

Holy Spirit.C Amen.P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the

truth is not in us.C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and

just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Confession of SinsP Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.4

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

AbsolutionP Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for

you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

Salutation and Collect of the DayP The Lord be with you.C And also with you.P Let us pray.

Almighty God, as Your only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, ascended into the heavens, so may we also ascend in heart and mind and continually dwell there with Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Old Testament Reading 2 Kings 2:5–155The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho drew near

to Elisha and said to him, “Do you know that today the LORD will take away your master from over you?” And he answered, “Yes, I know it; keep quiet.”

6Then Elijah said to him, “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan.” But he said, “As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.” So the two of them went on. 7Fifty men of the sons of the prophets also went and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8Then Elijah took his cloak and rolled it up and struck the water, and the water was parted

to the one side and to the other, till the two of them could go over on dry ground.

9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask what I shall do for you, before I am taken from you.” And Elisha said, “Please let there be a double portion of your spirit on me.” 10And he said, “You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it shall be so for you, but if you do not see me, it shall not be so.” 11And as they still went on and talked, behold, chariots of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. 12And Elisha saw it and he cried, “My father, my father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!” And he saw him no more.

Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 13And he took up the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and went back and stood on the bank of the Jordan. 14Then he took the cloak of Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the water, saying, “Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?” And when he had struck the water, the water was parted to the one side and to the other, and Elisha went over.

15Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho saw him opposite them, they said, “The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha.” And they came to meet him and bowed to the ground before him. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Catechetical ReviewThe Sacrament of the AltarAs the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household. What is the Sacrament of the Altar? It is the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ under the bread and wine, instituted by Christ Himself for us Christians to eat and to drink. Where is this written? The holy Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke and St. Paul write: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: "Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me." In the same way also he took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Second Reading Acts 1:1–11

1In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3To them he presented himself alive after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

4And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

6So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” 9And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. 10And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, 11and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Luke 24:44–53P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twenty-fourth

chapter.C Glory to You, O Lord.

44Then [Jesus] said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, 46and said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, 47and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations,

beginning from Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. 49And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

50Then he led them out as far as Bethany and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53and were continually in the temple blessing God. P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ.

Gathered in the name and the remembrance of Jesus, we beg You, O Lord, to forgive, renew, and strengthen us with Your Word and Spirit. Grant us faithfully to eat His body and drink His blood as He bids us do in His own testament. Gather us together, we pray, from the ends of the earth to celebrate with all the faithful the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom, which has no end. Graciously receive our prayers; deliver and preserve us. To You alone, O Father, be all glory, honor, and worship, with the Son and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

AnnouncementDear members of DSLC,

When the church building is reopened for full use of the building you will find that a change has been made to the mailboxes in the fellowship hall. In the past each box was labeled with the members name. Boxes were in alphabetical order. This was a perfectly good system as long as membership growth was modest. The rate of new members has increased, and we thank God for that. It does, however, require a change in how mailboxes are assigned.

Using the alphabetical system, the church secretary had to reorder the mailboxes periodically as members joined or left. This was time consuming for her, and often the changes were unable to be made promptly, so there was confusion where one’s mailbox actually was. You may have experienced this mailbox reassignment more than once.

Effective immediately, the mailboxes are in numeric order, #1 to #160. Each member/family has been assigned a number. There are two identical laminated lists of box numbers and names attached to the mailboxes. Please look at the list to find your 26

Page 27: The Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost€¦ · Web view2020/05/24  · The Ascension of Our Lord (Observed)Sunday, Ma y 24, 20 20 Divine Service 2, Page 167 LARGE PRINT Divine Shepherd

assigned mailbox. Once you know your number, it will never change. However, the lists will remain as a reference list so you can locate the mailboxes of other members should you need to leave them a note or other item.

EXAMPLE: John Smith is initially assigned mailbox #95. As long as he is a member of DSLC he will always have #95, no matter how many other members join or depart DSLC. But, when John Smith leaves DSLC permanently, for whatever reason, his mailbox number will be assigned to the next new member/family who joins DSLC following John’s departure. Even if their last name starts with a C, or H, or Y, they will have mailbox number 95.

Under this system, the secretary only has to make a change on the mailbox list, which is already in the word processor. She will print a new page with the change and insert it into the list attached to the mailboxes. That simple

We hope you will find this numbering system to be easy to use. If you do have concerns, please contact the church secretary, Melissa Seifert, at [email protected], or call 605-787-6438.
