Piratesof

HiltonHead

Board the Black Dagger and set sail on a pirate adventure!

From beginning to end, the action is non-stop as the kids are trans-formed into a Pirate Crew. The adventure starts in Harbour Town, where each little mate gets to put on some pirate gear and learns to talk like a pirate. Once they’ve sworn their allegiance to the boat, they are officially part of the Crew and get to join in the hunt for loot.

We’ve got a map that leads to a sunken treasure chest, but Stinky Pete knows about it too and he stole the key.

The race is on to find Stinky Pete and get the key back before he can steal the treasure for himself. Once we find him, our new Crew is going to have to man the water cannons and blast the stink right off of Pete until he gives us the key!

Fortunately, at Pirates of Hilton Head, we always beat Stinky Pete and every little pirate always gets a handful of the loot. We celebrate the victory with some music and dancing before heading back to port.

PIRATE LINGOEvery little pirate needs to know how to speak like a real bucca-neer. The most important thing for any aspiring pirate to know is that we shout pretty much every-thing! Those who can’t turn up the volume will be insulted with the lowest, most terrible of pirate nicknames, such as Mermaid or Guppy!

Some words you may want to brush up on in advance of your pirate cruise:

AHOY – Pirate for “hello” or “I see something.”

AYE, AYE – Pirate for “Yes, Sir.”

ARRGHH! - Always said with extreme emphasis, this is the one word a pirate simply can’t do without.

The entire experience with the crew of the Black Dagger lasts about an hour and a half. The first fifteen minutes are spent on the dock getting the little pirates ready and then we board the ship and head out on the Calibogue Sound.

Trips leave daily, reservations for all passengers are required. Please arrive at least 20 minutes early to get your pirate name and a tattoo.

8 THE OFFICIAL GUIDE | JUNE - AUGUST 2016

Established in 1985, the Coastal Discovery Museum offers hands-on exploration of the Lowcountry‘s diverse cultural heritage and complex natural history with an array of programs, presenta tions, exhibits and tours for all ages.

The last significant parcel of open space on Hilton Head Island, the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn opened to the public in 2007.

Comprising 68-acres of salt marsh and maritime forests, centuries-old live oaks, open fields and a dozen historic structures, Honey Horn is located at the inter section of Highway 278 and the Cross Island Expressway.

Over its 300-year history, Honey Horn has been home to Indian tribes, indigo and Sea Island cot ton plan-tations, Gullah families who hunted and farmed the land, a hunt club established by northern busi nessmen and, starting in 1950, Fred Hack’s private residence and farm.

In the late 1990s, the Town of Hilton Head Island purchased the site and leased it to the Coastal Discovery Museum for 95 years.

Construction of the 6,000-sq.-ft. hunting lodge began in 1859 and, today, is known as the Discovery House, complete with permanent and temporary exhibits, a Kids Zone and gift shop.

Self-guided tours of the property via salt marsh boardwalks and an oys ter shell trail include the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Enclosure, a Lowcountry Heritage Garden and a Camellia Garden. Guided History/Nature Walks & Talks, live animal programs and seasonal kids camps are offered

on a regular basis. Off-site tours and programs include the Forts of Port Royal, Beach Discovery, Turtle Talks & Walks and much more.

This historic property is also avail-able to rent for wedding receptions, corporate events and is home to some of the Island’s annual festivals.

EVENTSFORTS OF PORT ROYALDuring the Civil War, Hilton Head Island was occupied by Union forces early in November 1861. The Island’s proximity to Charleston and Savannah made it an important strategic location for the Union and was occupied throughout the War. This guided history tour will help you learn about the Battle of Port Royal. For ages 7 and older. $12 adult, $7 child (ages 7-12). Wed. at 10 a.m. Reservations required by calling (843) 689-6767 ext. 223.

EXPLORING PINCKNEY ISLANDPinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, located at the northern tip of the Island, is a unique location full of Lowcountry history and natural beauty. This tour explores three differ-ent habitats: the salt marsh, the mari-time forest and a fresh water lagoon. The Island is also rich in cultural history and was home to General Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a signer of the United States Constitution. Tues. and Thurs., 9-11 a.m. $12 adult, $7 child. Reservations required by calling (843) 689-6767 ext. 223 or register online.

KAYAK HILTON HEAD (843) 684-1910 / kayakhiltonhead.com

DOLPHINS, DOLPHINS, DOLPHINS, everyone wants to see them! Of course, they are wild animals, so we can’t guarantee to see them on every tour we do, but we are located in one of their favorite feeding spots, so our percentage of seeing them might just be the highest on the Island! Blackbeard, Nick and little baby Stripes are a few of our favorite dolphins. For over 10 years, Kayak Hilton Head has been teaching visitors all about the dolphins, birds, oysters, salt marsh and many, many other interesting things about our Island. A great activity for beginners, families and experienced alike. Our goal is to provide a leisurely, fun and educational experience. Our guides have been doing this for years and still love it every day! We often catch blue crabs, shrimp and many interesting varieties of fish as a great ending to our tours in the warmer months. The kids love this! It’s a great opportunity for the kids to hold and learn about these interesting critters and provides great photo opportunities for the parents.

Our kayaks are easy to paddle and completely safe and comfortable. We rotate new kayaks into our fleet every year, giving you new and high-quality equipment to better enjoy your experience. Single and double kayaks are available.

DOLPHIN DISCOVERIES (843-684-1911), our guaranteed dolphin, 6-passenger BOAT TOUR also runs daily tours for those looking to enjoy a leisurely boat ride with one of our captains.

RESERVATIONS REQUIRED. Tours depart daily throughout the day. Free parking at the end of Simmons Rd. on the LEFT SIDE.

SHARK! SHARK! The kids will talk about the shark they caught the whole way home! Younger kids and even your teenagers will have fun with this! 1- to 3-foot sharks are what we are out to catch on this 3-hour tour. The occasional 4-footer we might have to cut loose! Perfect size for a prized photo and then we put them back to live another day! We were successful on every single shark fishing tour we did last year! Our biggest day caught 18 on one tour. The kids couldn’t have more fun than this! Private boat, 6 passenger maximum. Family fun at its best!

TIVITIES

Although mucky and smelly, the salt marsh is an important part of the Lowcountry.

In actuality, the salt marsh produces more food for the environment than rain forests. The green grass that dominates the marsh is called salt marsh cord grass or Spartina. When this cord grass dies each winter and decomposes, its nutrients are released into the marsh mud, creeks, streams and even into the ocean. These nutri-ents begin the food chain for the entire Southeastern coastal area.

So, the next time you enjoy a meal of shrimp, mussels, oysters, blue crab, stone crab or saltwater fish, thank the muddy salt marshes.

Atlantic Bottlenose DolphinLocal waters host a large, year-round popu la tion of these playful, air-breath ing mammals. The South Carolina Lowcountry is also one of the few places to witness strand feed-ing–a learned behavior where dol-phins work as a team to corral fish, chase them onto a muddy bank and then temporarily beach themselves to eat their catch.

Marsh TackyOnce the most common horse found in the Southeast, this Colonial Spanish breed is unique ly adapted for sur vival in swampy ter rain. On the Sea Islands, Gullah families used them for transporta tion, hunting and farming. Today, fewer than 400 of these small, gentle horses exist.

Alligator Keep your distance from these feder-ally-pro tected, prehistoric reptiles often seen sunning themselves on the banks of lagoons. It is ille gal to feed these cold-blooded animals and, although they may look listless

and slow, they can out run humans over short distances.

Loggerhead Sea TurtleEvery summer, dozens of female log-gerhead sea turtles travel thou sands of miles to Hilton Head Island, return-ing to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched two or three decades earlier. It is a federal offense to harass these ancient reptiles which can weigh up to 300 pounds.

Green AnoleCommon in South Carolina and Georgia, this lizard is called a cha-meleon for its ability to change color. The only anole species native to the United States, males have a pink throat fan they display when protect-ing their ter ritory or finding a mate.

Southeastern Five-Lined SkinkNamed for the five white or yellow-ish stripes running down their backs, these moderately large lizards eat a variety of insects and spiders. Like many other lizards, their tails will break off if attacked, but it is only a myth that they are venomous.

THECRAZY CRAB

The Crazy Crab boasts two picturesque water front locations on either end of Hilton Head Island.

This longtime local favorite opened in 1984 on Highway 278 overlook ing Jarvis Creek. Two years later, the second restaurant began serving hungry patrons in Harbour Town.

Destroyed by fire in 1998, the Northend Crazy Crab was rebuilt to twice its original size and now accom mo dates nearly 250 people inside the spacious, nauticalthemed restau rant, with another 80 seats outside on the deck.

Open daily for lunch and dinner, both locations offer similar menus featuring madetoorder Lowcountry specialties.

Share a complimentary basket of freshly made hushpuppies while enjoying a bowl of She Crab Soup, shrimp cocktail, jumbo lump crab cake, oysters on the half shell or Caesar salad.

During lunch, the variety of salads, sandwiches, burgers, seafood plat ters and daily specials are sure to please every palate. In the evening, the menu expands to include an even larger selection of appetizers and entrées, such as stuffed flounder, baconwrapped BBQ shrimp and Alaskan king crab legs.

From fresh fish and tender sea scal lops to succulent shrimp and plump oysters, patrons may choose their seafood broiled, fried or steamed with a garden salad, cornonthecob, coleslaw, onion rings, rice, baked potato or French fries on the side. Those who can’t make up their

minds may opt for the signature Steamed Seafood Pot or a combina tion platter. Several steak and chicken dishes are available, as well.

Steps away from the Harbour Town Playground in Sea Pines or with an enclosed outdoor play area and huge indoor saltwater aquarium at Jarvis Creek, kids are always wel come at these casual, family friendly establish ments.

The special “Minnow’s Menu“ in cludes macaroni & cheese, fried shrimp, chicken fingers and pizza with a selection of locallymade ice cream, homemade Key Lime pie and chocolate mud pie for dessert.

According to coowner Peter Kenneweg, the secret of the restau rants’ success is threefold.

“It’s more than one thing,” he explains. “It’s got to be good food, good service and the price has to be right.”

The Crazy Crab restaurants have been local favorites for more than 30 years. A children’s menu, takeout and outdoor seat ing (at Jarvis Creek) are avail able. Reservations are not required, large groups welcome.

PLAN AHEADA little planning goes a long way, if you have your heart set on din ing at a specific restaurant. Decide where you want to eat long before it’s time to leave and call ahead to see if reservations are accepted. To avoid crowds and long lines, check to see if any spe-cial events are taking place in the area that evening. Remember, many restau rants offer

similar lunch and dinner menus, so you can always enjoy a mouthwatering midday meal at a great price.

ARRIVE EARLYAfter spending hours on the beach, in the water or biking around the Island, it’s time for dinner. If you head out early–before everyone is REALLY tired and cranky–you’ll find Early Bird specials, Happy Hour deals and, often, live enter tainment. Don’t worry, you can always move on to your next stop after having a bite to eat and a refreshing beverage.

SIT OUTSIDEEscape the frigid air-conditioning and white table cloths inside and settle down at an outside table for a relaxed evening of people watching, catching up with friends and family and, often, musical enter tainment. Many Island eateries offer the opportunity to dine al fresco overlooking spec tacular waterfront vistas, unique Lowcountry landscapes and, if you’re really lucky, a playground.

PROVIDE DISTRACTIONSWhat might seem like a reason able wait for an adult can be an unbearable eternity for a hungry child. Pack some portable snacks, a few small toys and accept crayons if offered. If there is a wait, spend some time outside exploring the immediate area and look-ing for lizards, birds, dolphins and other Lowcountry critters – unless there is a lobster tank inside. Please keep in mind, small toys make excellent projec tiles and crayons will melt if left in a hot car.

ORDER TAKE-OUTWhen all else fails, it’s time to place an order to go. Call your favorite restaurant and enjoy your favorite dishes at a local park, the beach, a playground or on the deck at your rental unit. Relax, you’re on vacation!

Dining WITH KIDS

Adults want a delicious, relaxing meal and kids just want to have fun. With hundreds of restau-

rants catering to every taste and budget, nearly all of the Island’s eateries offer children’s menus, as well as some form of family-friendly enter tainment. Make vacation mealtimes memorable for the food and ambiance–rather than mon-umental meltdowns–with some helpful tips for dining with kids.

HOW HILTON HEAD GOT ITS NAME

Many people here on a first visit make a

basic error in assuming that somehow the

name Hilton Head has to do with the

Hilton hotel chain. While the late ho-

tel magnate, Conrad Hilton, may

have been related to the man from

whom the name sprang, it is certain that he

was unaware of the Island’s existence during most of his lifetime.

Hilton Head gained its name from some notes on navigation made

by the British explorer and seaman, Capt. William Hilton, who

investigated the lower coast of South Carolina in 1665 for a group

of Barbadian planters who were interested in expanding their New

World holdings.

His sighting of a particular bluff or “headland” as a way of finding the

entrance to Port Royal Sound while still at sea was noted in his papers

and the name of that headland soon applied to the entire island.

Summer Skincare:SUNBLOCKCHOOSE WISELYSkincare professionals prefer physical sunblocks, as opposed to chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays causing heat and inflammation in the skin (that’s why your face burns when you reapply), whereas phys ical sunblocks reflect the sun’s harmful rays and actually offer better protection in the water.

APPLY PROPERLYDon’t rub, but press your sunblock into your skin for optimum pro tection. When you rub your hands together, you automatically start to compromise the efficacy of your sunblock.

USE LIBERALLYUse the twofinger rule for your face. Squeeze a line of sunblock down both your index and middle finger to ensure an adequate amount. The rest of your body should require no less than 2 full ounces and more if you are larger.

FOR ADDED PROTECTIONCombine your sunblock with an antioxidant like Vitamin C or pomegranate and keep your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.

For those with fair, sun-sensitive skin, children or anyone spending a lot of time on the water, clothing with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of 15 and higher is recommended as protection against UV-related health risks. Enjoy plenty of fun in the sun this summer, just don’t forget to pack up sunblock, sunglasses, hats and UPF clothing so you don’t get burned.

RULES FOR THE ROAD:Please obey all traffic signals and pathway markings. Stop signs must be obeyed for safety. Bicycles are vehicles and must obey SC traffic laws.

Travel the pathways at speeds that allow for the safety of pedes trians and other users.

Never ride within the roadway against traffic. State law requires bicycles to drive like all other vehicles.

Please do not ride on roads where a pathway is available.

Please ride single file and keep a safe distance from other bicyclists.

WATCH OUT FOR MOTORISTS! Motorists must yield to pedestrians and bicyclists within marked crossings, but they may not see you.

Please yield to pedestrians. When resting or stopped, please move off the pathway.

Most sections of the pathways are not illuminated. If you must bike at night, please wear light-colored clothing or carry a flash light. Bicycles must have a red rear reflector and a headlight when biking at night.

When approaching slower pathway users from behind, please sound your warning device, or call out, “Passing on your left.” Always pass on the left.

Bicyclists should always wear a helmet, especially children 12 and under.

Make eye contact and use hand signals. Assume other bicyclists and motorists don’t see you. Hand signals tell motorists and other path users what you intend to do and will ensure everyone’s safe enjoyment of the pathways.

Be courteous, alert and predictable.

At low tide, the Island’s 12 miles of beaches are ideal for biking. Public beaches are indicated on the Public

Pathways Map.

Our map also shows the existing public pathways. Many kiosks are located

along the pathways with an Island-wide map on one

side, and a localized map of the area on the other.

Recreational PathwaysGuide

The Town of Hilton Head Island provides

nearly 60 miles of public path ways

and nature trails for the enjoy mentof pedes trians

and cyclists.
