All Souls Day - Wednesday Nov.2 at 7:00 pm Each year, the Church observes the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) on November 2. It is a day on which we want to remember the dead in light of our Christian faith, which holds that the dead are called to share in Christ’s victory of life over death. At the Mass, we will call forth the names of the persons whose funerals were held at St. Mark’s since last year’s All Souls Day. For each of them, we light a candle from the Easter Candle as an expression of our Easter faith. The families who have had one of their members buried from St. Mark’s in the past year will receive a letter inviting them to this Mass. There may be parishioners who have experienced the death of a close relative (such as father/mother, daughter/son, brother/sister) this past year, whose funeral was celebrated elsewhere. If you wish to have a close relative's name called forth as well, please let us know by calling the office at (819) 684-6926 or by sending an e-mail to the parish office. A reflection for this Year of Mercy

“Merciful like the Father… is the ‘motto’ of this Holy Year. This is a shortened version of the verse in Scripture, “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” (Luke 6:36). The Pope wrote, “In mercy, we find proof of how God loves us. He gives his entire self, always, freely, asking nothing in return. He comes to our aid whenever we call upon him. What a beautiful thing that the Church begins her daily prayer with the words, “O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me” (Ps 70:2)! The

assistance we ask for is already the first step of God’s mercy toward us. He comes to assist us in our weakness. And his help consists in helping us accept his presence and closeness to us. Day after day, touched by his compassion, we also can become compassionate towards others”(Pope Francis). Like all other dioceses throughout the world, the Archdiocese of Gatineau has opened up Holy Doors in our cathedral. The Holy Door symbolizes the extraordinary way that Catholics can open themselves up to God. A special invitation to two diocesan events: Mark your calendars

Diocesan celebration of our Feast Day: October 11 is the Feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, principal patron of the Archdiocese of Gatineau. Every year, we are invited to join our brothers and sisters from the other parishes in the archdiocese at a Mass at the cathedral to celebrate this feast day. Please join us at the Cathedral (245, boul. Saint-Joseph) for this Mass at 7:00 PM on October 11. During the celebration of this Eucharist in this Year of Mercy, we will ask the Lord forgiveness for our occasional lack of mercy, both as individuals and as a church.

Year of Mercy pilgrimage for English parishes: One of the central components of the Jubilee of Mercy is that the Holy Doors throughout the world will be opened during this Jubilee year. When they are opened at the beginning of the year, "the Holy Door will become a Door of Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instils hope." The English parishes of the diocese will be coming together on Saturday, October 15 to make a pilgrimage to go through the Holy Door at the Cathedral. There will be a 14-km pilgrimage leaving from St. Mark’s at 9:00 AM on October 15, and a shorter pilgrimage leaving from Our Lady of the Annunciation at 1:00 on October 15. We will come together at St. Joseph’s Cathedral (245, boul. Saint-Joseph) to go through the Holy Door and celebrate a Mass at 2:00. Please see our Web site for more information and to register for the pilgrimage. Please invite friends and family members to join us!

Liturgy of the Word for children during the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses One of the ways we help children in our parish to become active participants in the liturgy of the Word is to celebrate it with them in the Children's Liturgy room. In that space, we do the same thing that the adults are doing – we read the readings together, reflect together on the readings, profess our faith, and raise up in prayer the needs of our world. We then come back to the church for the Eucharistic prayer. All children between 5 and 12 are welcome to join us on any Sunday – it is not necessary to sign up children to participate in the children's liturgy. If you have grandchildren or guests visiting, they are welcome to join us as well. We also welcome parents to accompany shy children on their first visit to help put them at ease. St. Mark’s Fall Harvest Dance! Come out and have some fun!!! Join us for the third Fall Harvest Dance, Saturday October 22nd in church basement; 7:30pm to 11:30 pm. Live music with Classic Country Re-Vu. Please bring your own refreshments (liquor license obtained) - Light refreshments will be provided. Tickets: $10 per adult, free for anyone under 18. Please call Brenda McGuire @ 613-797/0106 or Shirley Frenette @ 819-685-0576 to purchase a ticket (tickets also available at the door). Table and chairs for sale by silent auction The parish has a dining room table and chairs to sell by silent auction. The table is an Anthes Baetz Walnut Dining-Room Table, which has 3 Leaves with an apron-finished edge. It has rounded corners with a gold leaf trimmed edge, and 4 cabriole legs with club feet. The table comes with 8 chairs. Great Canadian Quality! Ideal for large gatherings. You can view the table and chairs in the church basement, and leave a bid on the silent auction sheet on the table. Bids will start at $500 and be received until Friday October 28 at noon. To avoid all confusion, please write your bids yourselves on the bid sheet, and NOT through the parish office. Operation Christmas Child Bring joy & hope to underprivileged children around the world, by filling a shoebox with items such as school supplies, toys, hygiene items etc. Each box will reach a child for Christmas. Boxes are found at the entrances to the church. Please take a pamphlet on the entrance tables which has instructions on filling the boxes and labels to put on the boxes. Boxes are due back before November 14th. For info call Shirley (819-685-0576). Thank you for supporting such a wonderful project!! Coffee Sunday Looking for volunteers to prepare and serve at the coffee Sundays. Someone is needed after the 9 am mass on the third Sunday of the month. Also for the first or third Sunday of the month after the 11 am mass. Please call Shirley at (819) 685-0576 for more information.

Join our youth group! St. Mark’s has a very active youth group for youth over 12. Last year, they put on a talent show, participated in a NET retreat, did volunteer work in the community and had lots of fun! Check out the photos of last year’s activities on our website. You can also register on the website. The youth group meets weekly on Thursday evenings. If you want more information, you can send your questions to the youth group email account at [email protected].

Why should I register as a parishioner? All parishioners are encouraged to register as parishioners. This enables us to have an accurate count of parishioners, and to send out mailings concerning activities at the parish. Finally, being a registered parishioner allows you to get your own set of envelopes for the weekly collection, which allows you to then get an income tax receipt. Please take a few minutes to pick up a registration form at the entrance and to fill it out!

Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Committee Report It has been some time since the RSC has had anything of significance to report to you. However, I can finally convey some positive news. Both applications for our two refugee families have been approved by the Quebec Gov't and our first family application is now being reviewed by Immigration Canada. We hope to hear soon from Quebec that our second application has been sent on to Immigration Canada. We realize that the federal process may take some time due to the number of sponsorship applications made nation-wide. At least now we are in the cue. As soon as the Committee receives more info we will pass it along to you. We thank you for your continued support and patience as we navigate through the bureaucratic maze.We are also in communication with St. Paul - St. Medard Refugee Group to compare notes info and procedure advice. Their first family is here and they expect to receive their second family in the spring of 2017. Presently, they are in need of "gently used" winter clothes for a 7 yr old boy, a 3 -4 yr old girl, a man's Sz 10 winter footwear and medium clothes and a woman's Sz 6/8, small clothes and for their second family in the spring they are in need of a good fridge and washing machine. If anyone can help out with these needs please contact: Alison Crouse: 819 684 6477 for clothing and Noella Leblanc: 819 332 4621 for furniture/appliances. Once again, thank you for your continued support and please keep our families in your prayers. CA Bowers, SRSC Upcoming Meetings and Events
