Patriot Day is a day the

United States remembers

the terrorist attacks on

September 11, 2001. This

day is commonly referred

to as 9-11 (Nine-Eleven).

It is believed that 2,996

people died in the attacks. President George W. Bush pro-

claimed September 11th Patriot Day in 2002.

VJ Day marks the end of WWII, and the cessation of fighting against Japan. It

is called “Victory In Japan Day “or “Victory Over Japan Day.” On August

6th, 1945, the United States military dropped an atomic bomb over the city of

Hiroshima, Japan in an effort to force Japan into an immediate, unconditional

surrender. Instead of immediately surrendering, the Japanese government de-

bated what to do. So, the U.S. dropped a second atomic bomb on August 9,

1945 over the city of Nagasaki, Japan.

On August 14, 1945, Japanese Emperor Hirohito cabled the U.S. to surren-

der, and agreed to the terms of the Potsdam Declaration.

On August 15, 1945, news of the surrender was announced to the world.

World War II was finally over. Hostilities ended.

On September 2, 1945, the Japanese formally surrendered aboard the U.S.

battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. President Truman declared this to be

V-J Day.

DISTRACTED DRIVING: A Highway patrolman

pulled alongside a speeding car on the freeway.

Glancing at the car, he was astounded to see that the

lady behind the wheel was knitting!

Realizing that she was oblivious to his flashing lights

and siren, the trooper cranked down his window,

turned on his bullhorn and yelled, “PULL OVER!”

“NO!” the lady yelled back, “IT'S A SCARF!”

“Thank you for

our freedom! If

you are not

saved, you must

accept Jesus as

your Savior, and

go to church

and learn more

about him. If

you are saved,

keep on praying

for us, and keep

up the good

work !” …..Age 8

The Berean Armed Forces Ministries

Brother Patrick Hayes, founder, wrote on his web site, “People in this great nation are grateful for our service members. We are thankful that we can sleep safely at night due to the dedication of these valiant men and women who care so much about us and our freedom. We also know that they sometimes have to give up their lives in support of that free-dom. Berean Armed Forces Ministries exists to help these service mem-bers understand the true freedom they can experience eternally, and the love of fellow Christians who continually pray for and support them. We rely on help from volunteers who write Thank You cards, color pic-tures of encouragement, and collate gospel tracks into a packet to dis-tribute.” Smith Grove accepted Brother Patrick Hayes as our new missionary on Sunday, July 30. We also took on the mission to reach 400-500 vet-erans this coming Veterans Day at Colden Corral in Greensboro. We are receiving pre-collated packets from Brother Hayes, but we will be add-ing our personally written thank you cards and our colored pictures, and each service member will receive a beautiful 8x10 picture of the Smith Grove congregation that was taken July 30 in front of the church. This is such a wonderful opportunity for us to thank the service men and women in our area, and to share God’s love with them on Veterans Day! And….. we can do this if each of us continues to write one Thank You note card and color one picture each week. Even our youngest children have been doing an amazing job in saying Thank you!

So, please remember to take your note card and picture to color each

week – you will have an important part in this special project!

Wade & Nora Smith ~ Missionaries to our Military

The Psalmist said, “I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” It is with thankful hearts that we say “THANK YOU” for your many prayers for us, the ministry here and for the finan-cial help which you so graciously give. Your faithfulness is a vital part of the Lord’s work with the military in the Tidewater area of Virginia. We praise the Lord for the great revival we had in June with Brother Max Alderman from Statesboro, Georgia. Pic-tured here are Erin, Ann and their friend, Mi-chelle. Erin (left) and Ann (right) attended the last night of the revival. Erin is in the Navy and has recently been stationed here in Norfolk. Her husband, who is also in the Navy, is stationed in Japan. This kind of separation is just one of the many sacrifices that our military is willing to give in order to serve our country. Erin’s sister-in-law, Ann, came to stay with her while Erin’s husband is in Japan. Both are a blessing and are very faithful to the Lord and to His house of worship. We praise the Lord that He called us to this area to be a help and a family to those who are away from their loved ones. We would appreciate your prayers for our neighbor and his family. For security reasons, we can’t mention his name. He has been deployed now for about three months. His wife was over this week and had din-ner with us. She told us that the convoy he was in was attacked by the enemy. He, along with other military personnel, was rescued by the Navy Seals. There were some casualties, but none were our military. We praise the Lord for His protecting hand during this mission. We have experienced many times the fact that our ministry with the military does not end when a military family moves away. We had a faithful Navy family with us for about 10 years. They moved to Illinois about 7 years ago. We have kept in touch with them over these years. They are having marital problems and we are now counseling them via phone and Skype. They are faithful to an Independent Baptist Church where they live. But, they still turn to us for godly council and help. We are reminded of I Peter 5:8 …”the devil, as a roaring lion walketh about seeking whom he may devour.” We ask that you help us pray for this family that God will intervene and heal their marriage. Psalms 126:6, “He that goeth forth and weeping, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” We would appreciate your prayers for us as we go forth knocking and hanging door hangers on the doors of many homes in this area. We are trusting the Lord to give the increase. May God richly bless you is our prayer!

Thankful to be in His Service, Wade and Nora

Already, our young people have wrapped up another summer, and it’s hard to believe that we’re beginning a new school year! Along with new school adventures, our youngsters are diving into brand new stud-ies at church and pondering truths vital to their Christian walks! John and Stephanie are leading the teens in a new Wednesday night study called “Living Right in a World Gone Wrong.” Although it may be difficult to adhere to God’s way of life, teens are learning that, if they will commit to Him, the Holy Spirit will guide them in their quest to develop a holy lifestyle. So far, teens have been wisely reminded that choosing God’s ways may result in feeling “alone,” but a lifestyle that pleases the Lord far outweighs the costs. “Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord.” (II Corinthians 6:17) Similarly, in Sunday School, Bruce has led the teenagers to see that “Dead Men DO Tell Tales.” From the framework of Hebrews, Chapter 11, we’ve been recounting the lives of faithful men, examining the traits that enabled them to walk close to God. In recent weeks of the series, we have focused on Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Joseph. We ask ourselves, “What can we learn from each of them, to help us live a life pleasing to God?” For our children, preschool through 6th grade, we’re kicking off the school year with a new twist… “Xtreme Adventure!” It’s a 5-week study that takes place on the hiking trail, and each Wednesday night will bring a different destination to help us learn to follow the steps of Jesus. Keeping in mind that “Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that (we) should follow His steps,” we are learning that walk-ing with Him leads to the Xtreme Adventure of the fruitful Christian life (I Peter 2:21)! So, grab your hiking boots and join us on the trail… if your kids love Vacation Bible School, they won’t want to miss this exciting weekly event, filled with campfire songs, snacks, Bible les-sons, and familiar puppet friends! Our first destination, on August 30, will be “Decision Pass… where we receive the Savior” and we’ll take a look at the Bible’s account of Zacchaeus. On September 6, we’ll visit “Prayer Peak… where we talk to the Savior” and learn that Jesus found a quiet place to pray. Note that the following schedule lists our “Xtreme Adventure” Wednesdays, but our youth will not be meeting at church during the week of camp meeting (on September 13, we encourage our families to join us at the Piedmont Baptist Camp-ground in Colfax, where we can truly worship the Lord under the stars)! Xtreme Adventure Wednesdays: August 30; September 6; September 20; September 27; October 4

The subject of the love of God is a misunderstood subject to many

people because the reference point for the subject is purely human and

solely based upon human experience. For example, a child unloved by

their earthly father would undoubtedly struggle more with an understand-

ing of the love of the Heavenly Father! God’s love, however, has no hu-

man equivalency and is only understood by the aid of the Holy Spirit.

“And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad

in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” – Romans 5:5

The subject of the love of God is a magnanimous subject for the love

of God itself is magnanimous! I would offer the following points in de-

fense of the truth of God’s magnanimous love:

God’s love is a self sustaining love. His love is not sustained from

any outward source for He is, in essence, “love,” as John states. His love

is not altered in any way by the actions and attitudes of us frail humans.

The love of God is sustained by the very nature of God which is pure de-

ity without the slightest taint of imperfection.

God’s love is a supreme love. Because He is God, His love has to

exceed all love on a human level. His love is unequalled by even the high-

est degree of love displayed today in the human family. God’s love goes

beyond our highest love. He loves us more than we even love our children

or ourselves!

God’s love is a sharing love. His love is a giving love. His love for

the world resulted in His giving His Son to die on Calvary! (Ref .John

3:16) His love is displayed in His daily loading us with benefits and pro-

visions along the way of life’s sojourn. “He that spared not his own Son,

but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give

us all things?” – Romans 8:32

God’s love is a settled love. He never loves us more and He never

loves us less. His love is consistent. God’s love is a secret love. The

child of God is assured by the Holy Spirit that they are loved individually

and in a special way by their Heavenly Father! He, in fact, loves us as if

we were His only child. He loves us in somewhat of a secret way in spite

of the multiplicity of His spiritual children. I think of a mother’s love.

Some mothers have several children but a loving mother has the capacity

to love all of her children in spite of their flaws and differences. However,

there is no model of love compared to the love of God!

“...God is Love...” (I John 4:16)

Pastor Chuck Peters

God’s love is a strong love. It is undying and unfailing. It can never

be broken and defeated.

God’s love is sacrificial. His love “drew salvation’s plan,” as the

song says. The drawing of salvation’s plan included a cross at Calvary.

His precious Son was sacrificed on that cross because of our sins! “For

he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be

made the righteousness of God in him.” – II Cor.5:21

I read a story of a lady walking down the street in a city who noticed

a little girl leaving a church by herself. The lady asked the little girl

where she had been and the child pointed to the church. The lady then

asked her what she was doing in the church. The child replied,

“Praying!” The lady thought that maybe she was bothered about some-

thing and then asked her what she was praying for. The little girl replied,

“Nothing! I was just loving Jesus!” (The Speaker’s Sourcebook)

I would close by saying that God’s love is shed abroad in the hearts

of the Christian. We find ourselves, “just loving Jesus” because He first

loved us! Peter states the truth well. “Whom having not seen, ye love; in

whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy un-

speakable and full of glory:” – I Peter 1:8 The love of God is both a dec-

laration of Scriptures and the delightful experience of the recipient of

God’s saving grace.

Our pastor is a learned man,

Who speaks with grace and ease.

He loves the sound of meter and

rhyme,

And writes so eloquently.

His writings radiate, with pen and

thought,

The essence of God in every phrase.

Yet his most enduring work with

words,

Has an inspirational message for

present days.

Prose and alliteration,

Syncopation and form,

Are the tools our pastor uses

In his “poemizing” brainstorms!

Posterity will record his views on life

And more on the life to come.

May his efforts result in many

souls saved,

And a closer walk

with the Son!

THE “POEMIZING” PASTOR
