“I cannot say enough about the quality education I received when I attended the business school at St. Mary’s University. The school and the Marianists gave me the personalized attention that I needed to succeed. Today, I am very proud to have my name associated with the business school where students still come first. The school has come amazingly far in terms of its national reputation and the high caliber of students and faculty it attracts. I am confident that the business school will continue to succeed and that our graduates will continue to become leaders in the global marketplace.”

accountingAccounting is the language of business. It involves the recognition, measurement, reporting and analysis of economic events that affect decision-making processes. It is the way that companies keep score of how successful they are, whether this is measured by profit or growth.

Accounting majors focus on developing strong analytical skills, making decisions and explaining decision outcomes to others. Employment opportunities include positions in the following fields:

Public accounting (CPA)

Information systems management

Corporate tax accounting

Governmental accounting

Environmental accounting

Forensic accounting

Tax consulting

VITA, a joint effort between the Bill Greehey School of Business and the School of Law, is a program that provides free tax preparation services to low-income community members.

In 2011, VITA volunteers comprised of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and approximately 25 Wells Fargo employees prepared nearly 800 federal income tax returns. Volunteers contributed roughly 1,300 hours to training and 1,900 hours to site operations, which resulted in refunds of $1.6 million, primarily to residents in neighborhoods surrounding St. Mary’s University.

The St. Mary’s VITA program is one of 12 nationwide awarded a grant to participate in an IRS-sponsored pilot project that observes VITA sites preparing business returns for micro-entrepreneurs.

In 1981, Brother Paul Goelz, S.M., Ph.D., established the Algur H. Meadows Center for Entrepreneurial Studies with a grant from the Meadows Foundation of Dallas. The Center emphasizes programs in entrepreneurship that prepare students to initiate and operate their own businesses.

In 1986, the Center introduced the Forum on Entrepreneurship Breakfast Series as a way of featuring local, national and international business leaders. In 2006, the Meadows Center launched The Goelz Speaker Series, which is part of a course in which students hear from nationally known entrepreneurs and senior executives about their “road maps” to success.

The Entrepreneurial Studies Program helps students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze the market, launch their own venture, manage projects effectively, and solve problems that occur in everyday business situations.

The Entrepreneur Scholars (E-Scholars) Program includes academic and extracurricular activities for undergraduate students from all disciplines and majors. It consists of traditional classroom experiences and off-campus endeavors that enhance entrepreneurial education, including domestic and international business trips, one-on-one interactions with mentors and networking opportunities with successful entrepreneurs.

San Antonio provides the best in employment, culture and cuisine, recreation and entertainment, and professional sports. Museums and landmarks like the Alamo and the world-famous River Walk define San Antonio as a vibrant place to live, work and study.

According to the Milken Institute, Texas metropolitan areas, led by San Antonio, took four of the top five positions among the 200 largest metros in the 2011 Best-Performing Cities Index. The index includes both long-term (five years) and short-term (one year) measurements of employment and salary growth.

In 2010, The Brookings Institute named San Antonio as one of the strongest-performing economies among the 100 largest metropolitan areas in the nation. They also ranked San Antonio No. 1 in overall performance based on employment, unemployment, gross metropolitan product and housing prices.
