    WELCOME...

    Its been a remarkable run!

For 24 years now, Verizon and its predecessors

dating back to MCI in 1987, have served as the titlesponsor of the refreshing PGA TOUR event at

    Harbour Town.

Not many other tournaments can point to a quarter-

    century of such continuous support.

And even though Verizon has decided not to extend

its sponsorship beyond this Aprils Heritage, the

termination has been very amicable, and Verizon

executives have given a clear signal that, it would

like to continue to be a part of this Hilton Head

    tradition in some capacity.

Meanwhile, you are reminded that Verizons last

hurrah will take place April 12-18 at Harbour Town.

Come join us as we celebrate the 42nd Anniversary

    of the Heritage.

    With every good wish,

    Arnie Burdick

    Tournament Information Director

ALL NUMBERS BOOSTEDIN STEVE WILMOTS REIGN

Steve Wilmot has been Tournament Director of the VerizonHeritage for 13 years, and what a great run its been.

Since 1997, the Heritage not only has raised thetournaments purse more than four million dollars (from$1.5M to $5.7M), but the bottom line -- charity donations -

    - have more than doubled (from $5M to $11M) during theprevious decade. The last three years have seen donationstotalling almost $5M.

During that time the staff has upgraded on-coursecomforts and viewing opportunities for fans, who haveshown their appreciation by purchasing all of the tickets

and badges available five of the last seven years.

Now Steve and the Foundation are faced with their biggestchallenge - finding a new title sponsor to replace Verizon, which will not renew its contract after the 2010 event.

So as the only PGA TOUR event in the State of South

Carolina is about to celebrate its 42nd Anniversary, itscomforting to know that this Harbour Town event is stillone of the golfers favorites.

Wilmot comes by his interest in sports and marketingnaturally. He was a star all-around athlete at Moorestown(NJ) High School and Guilford College. He holds a degree

in Sports Management from Guilford as well as a MastersDegree from St. Thomas University in Miami, FL

Besides serving as Tournament Director, Steve sits on theBoard of Directors of the South Carolina Junior GolfFoundation, The Savannah Harbor Foundation, the HiltonHead/Bluffton Chamber of Commerce, and the PGA

    TOURs Tournament Advisory Committee.

    HERITAGE CLASSIC FOUNDATION

    TOURNAMENT GENERAL SPONSOR

The officers and directors of the Heritage Classic

Foundation, general sponsor of the Verizon Heritage, provide

the financial stability, guidance and direction for the popular

annual PGA TOUR event on Hilton Head Island.

The Foundations goal is simple, but it embraces the

worlds most caring thought CHARITY!Since it was founded in 1987 as a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit

organization, the Foundation has helped improve lives in the

community, as well as lending support to many medical

    institutions.

Since its inception, the Foundation has donated close to

$20 million to the immediate area and State of South Carolina

charities. All net proceeds from the tournament are contributedannually, and multiple charities, colleges and universities

received $1.3 million from last Aprils event.

Some of the major beneficiaries over the years have been

the Volunteers in Medicine of Hilton Head, Hilton Head

Hospital, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, the Medical

University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, theShriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Greenville and the

Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head.

    SCHOLAR PROGRAM EXPANDED

The tournaments scholar program has been

considerably upgraded over the years. Both the value and

the number of grants have been increased by the Heritage

    Classic Foundation.

As in the past, Scholars from the graduating classes at

Beaufort County High Schools are honored, and these

awards are presented to deserving students whodemonstrate scholastic and leadership achievement as well

as financial need. The grants cover four college years

providing students maintain the necessary criteria.

The program, begun in 1993 when only seven Scholars

were named, now honors 14 scholars each year. In addition,

the value of twelve awards was boosted recently from$14,000 to $18,000. Also, two special awards -- named after

previous Scholar Chairmen, the late Mike Malanick and

John Zimmerman -- have risen from $18,000 to $22,000.

To date, a grand total of $2,050,250 has been awarded.

Since 1993, 192 students have been named Heritage Classic

Foundation Scholars. Trustee Ward Kirby now serves as

    BRIAN GAY REWRITESTOURNAMENTS RECORD BOOK

(Jim McCabe, one of the top-flight golf writers of our time, wasin Hilton Head to cover the 2009 Verizon Heritage. The

following was his lead in GolfWeek describing Brian Gaysrecord-shattering victory:)

With uncanny success, the team titles, championship rings,

and victories always have come Brian Gays way.

    Recognition, however, is another matter.

One of the all-time underrated greats in University ofFlorida golf, Buddy Alexander said. The man should know, having coached the Gators for the past 21 years, during

which his rosters have featured names such as ChrisDiMarco, Dudley Hart, former U.S. Amateur championBubba Dickerson and Camilo Villegas.

None of them, Alexander points out, can match Gaysoutput of seven championship rings: four SEC team titles, two SEC individual titles and one NCAA championship.

The fact that not much of a spotlight fell his way wasdisappointing, but no surprise. It fit with his personality:quiet and unassuming, Alexander said.

That description also would fit Gays game, at least untilApril 19, when the 37-year old made record-shatteringnoise to seize some attention. Adding his name to a

champions roll call at the Verizon Heritage that stretchesfrom Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus to Greg Normanand Davis Love III, Gay mastered the twists and turns ofHarbour Town Golf Links by shooting a tournament-best20-under 264.

Noisy stuff, but what generated greater commotion was the

whopping victory margin - 10 strokes. The widest spreadsince Phil Mickelson took the 2006 Bell South Classic by13. Gays steamroller was brilliant throughout. At itsSunday best -- a 7-under 64 -- it was as breathtaking as thewind-swept views across Calibogue Sound.

    Do you agree, champ?

Its never as easy as it looks, Gay said, moments aftersecuring the $1,026,000 prize.

Hey, who asked him? After all, he was so busy making atournament-best 20 birdies that he didnt notice his 62-shotlead- or whatever it was as he putted out on the 72nd green.

What will the stories be this year? No doubt, all of thisand more as the PGA TOUR regular season sets thestage for the Playoffs for the FedExCup.

Once again this year, the Playoffs feature a progressivecut narrowing 125 players to 100 and then down to 70players. A reset takes place, and the top 30 players areseeded for the final challenge where the 2010 FedExCupChampion will be crowned.

Rain played tricks with the 1980 Sea Pines Heritage Classic.

Fridays second round was washed out and playedSaturday, with 36 holes to be played Sundayafter cutting the field in half.

However, more rain Sunday morning limited that days play to18 holes in the afternoon with only the top 59

participating. The tournament was concluded Monday.

The Sea Pines Heritage Classic still paid the low 70 and ties, which is why some golfers who did not play 72 holes, still

    received a check.
