My dear friends in Christ, THROUGH THE YEARS! 40 YEARS OF CELEBRATING OUR FAITH AND GOD’S LOVE! In two weeks time we will gather as a community to celebrate the feast of St. Anne, our patroness. This gathering is about the love of God for us. The love that was very crucial in the life of St. Anne’s as mother of our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary! In the story of the Good Samaritan, we see the power and the meaning of love alive in the heart of humanity. In the gospel today, we are asked to reflect on the meaning of love through the heart of Jesus. When the scholar asked Jesus, Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself!” To reflect on the meaning of love, I am sharing with you a letter that I wrote to a couple during their encounter retreat. Dear Chris and Kristine, Socrates once said that the “unexamined life is not worth living.” I hope that you will find your time during this three-day encounter retreat a time and a moment of reflection and prayer. I know that this is a very important moment in your life together. It is also a moment with God. There must be a good reason why you decided to join this encounter weekend. Whatever it was, one thing I know for sure is that you will go home with a greater sense of who you are and what you are. You will see each other again in a very different light. Each of you is a unique and individual per-son. On the day of your wedding you brought that uniqueness to be molded into each other to form a new creation of life and beauty. This moment in your life can be a very powerful moment for growth and humility. This is an oppor-tunity! You chose to be part of this experience because you want to grow deeper in your relationship. But this is also an acceptance of your realization that to “seek more” is wisdom and joy. This must be the driving force in your life. B.F. Skinner, a great contemporary psychologist once said, “What you and I will become in the end will be just more and more of what we are deciding and trying to be right now. Each one of you brings with you a different and unique reality and experience in your married re-lationship. But the one thing that is very clear is that the word appreciation is one of the most important re-alities of your life and in your relationship. I believe that when you appreciate each other, the value of your relationship increases. On the day of your wedding, you made a promise and a commitment to “love each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and health all the days of your life.” This is the foundation of your life together as husband and wife. Every commitment is like every moment in life: there is a birth and death in every moment. Something is and something else can never be again. There is a choice and a surrender, a yes and a no. To love is indeed costly. I pray that these words will continue to have a deeper meaning for both of you especially during this time of your reflection and prayer. You have a share of the human realities of life, but you didn’t con-fine yourselves to isolation and despair and selfishness. Instead you opened yourselves to meaning and ful-fillment and appreciation. Viktor Frankl, an Austrian psycho-analyst, once said that “a meaningful life can result only from the experience of love.” This implies a dedication to another. St. Francis gave us a greater sense of this: “It is in giving that we receive.” I would like to leave you with these words from a great German thinker, Karl Menninger, who once said, “Love cures. It cures those who give it and it cures those who receive it.” I am so proud of you. May our God be with you and keep you safe in his care! Fr. Geoffrey
