Tiffin University Golf Media GuideTRANSCRIPT
At Tiffi n University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and chal-lenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades in-cluding All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffi n University in the last fi ve years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones
as we enter the NCAA Division II playing fi eld and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confi dent the future will also be highly successful for Tiffi n University athletics.
- Lonny Allen Athletic Director
Welcome to this athletic season at Tiffi n University. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffi n University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fi tness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the fi eld.

Darby Roggow - Head Men’s Golf Coach Darby Roggow enters his eighth season as Head Coach for the Dragons. He looks forward to leading the men’s team into NCAA Division II competition and building upon past suc-cess. “Being a member of the GLIAC is very exciting. I’m looking forward to a great year as we have a lot of new faces in the program. It should be an exciting year,” Roggow said. “We look forward to competing against great fi elds every week as we travel across the country again this year. Our trip to Tucson, Ari-zona highlights the season. Even though we are young, I think we can be competitive quickly. We must continue to manifest a strong work ethic and high level of intensity. Those things have worked well for us in the past, and that won’t change this year.”
Darby is Assistant Athletic Director as well as the Director of Club/Recreational and Intramural Sports at Tiffi n University. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Manage-ment in 1996 and obtained his Master’s degree in Business Administration in 1999. The Tiffi n University men’s golf team had a promising fi rst season of competition in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 2008-09, and will look to build on last year’s experiences. Said eighth-year Head Coach Darby Roggow, “The GLIAC is a very competitive conference with some of the best golfers in Division II, and we made good prog-ress as the season went along that will translate into success for this season.” The Dragons fi nished eighth at the GLIAC Championships in the fall, and the team’s youth was on display as Tiffi n’s top four golfers were sophomores or freshmen. The team fi nished 16th out of 21 teams at the Fall Great Lakes Regional competition, and 18th in the spring regional tournament. However, Coach Roggow saw signs of progress throughout the year, and they were
on display at the fi nal competition of the 2008-09 season. “Our third place fi nish at the West Virginia Wesleyan Invitational was our best fi nish in an invite all season,” said Coach Roggow, “and we know next year has the potential to be better with a year of seasoning against top competition in the region.” The Dragons return senior Spencer Schabel, juniors Andy Kronander, Seth McNeeley, James Bell, and Tom Conway, along with sophomores Justin Epure and Dil-lon Klein. Bell, Klein, and Conway consistently were the team’s top three performers at invitationals. “Our returners gained valuable expe-rience, and have greater expectations for this season,” said Roggow. Newcomers Jon Klein, Corey Martinez, Jimmy Van Fleet, and Brad Wannemacher round out the varsity roster for the Dragons 2009-10 campaign, which promises to be an exciting year for Dragon golf. “We have the talent to improve our performances from last season, and are ready to step up and start climbing the ranks among the elite teams in our region and conference,” said Roggow.
2009-10 Men’s Season Preview 2009-10 Women’s Season Review The Tiffi n University women’s golf team
looks to build on a successful fi rst season in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The team showed strong promise during the 2008-09 season and looks at a brighter future in 2009.
The Lady Dragons fi nished sixth at the GLI-AC Championships, a strong fi nish and the team’s third-highest fi nish at an event during 2008-09. Tiffi n won the Saint Joseph’s Invitational in the fall of 2008, and placed fi fth at the Tiffi n Invitational in the spring of 2009. The Dragons were led by senior Amber Wetherill throughout the year. Wetherill posted the best score in four of the team’s fi nal fi ve invitationals, with the only exception being Sara Durkee’s strong showing at the Ashland Invite.
“Amber did a great job for the team last year, and we’ll need stronger performances from our return-ers to have a good year,” said second-year Head Coach Ryan Sams.
The Lady Dragons return three players from last year’s team, including seniors Durkee and Brittany Lynch, and Kahla Bernacchi. Durkee was consistently the Lady Dragons’ second-best golfer last year, and Bernacchi typically fi nished a close third behind Durkee and Wetherill. “We’ll look for those three to show the new players on our squad the preparation needed to succeed in the GLIAC,” said Coach Sams. Tiffi n brings four freshmen into the fold for 2009, as Elizabeth Christani, Deborah Landis, Allison Soviak, and Stepha-nie Templeman will look to make a smooth transition into the team and raise the team’s overall performance from a year ago. Despite the challenges of having a roster dominated by youth, Coach Sams is hopeful that the team will be better prepared for success in Tiffi n’s second year in the prestigious GLIAC. “We made some good strides last year and have the ability to improve across the board,” said Sams. “With hard work and dedication we have a chance to be successful this year.”

2010 NCAA Division II Men’s National Championships The Sagamore Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course in Noblesville, Ind., will be the site of the 2010 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. The event is scheduled May 18-21. The University of Indianapolis and the Great Lakes Valley Conference, with assistance from Indiana Sports Corporation and the Hamilton County Convention & Visitors Bureau, will host the championship.
The championship includes 108 student-athletes (20 teams of fi ve who qualify in regional play throughout the nation, in addition to the top eight individuals not on those teams). Those 108 student-athletes compete over 72 holes of golf to deter-mine both team and individual champions.
“We are excited to bring our 2010 championships to central Indiana and The Saga-more Club,” said David Sharp, chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Committee and athletic director at Ouachita Baptist University. “A Nicklaus-designed course measuring nearly 7,200 yards will provide both a tremendous challenge and a great
championship experience for our student-athletes.”
This championship announcement is part of Indianapo-lis’ inclusion in the Championship City pilot program. Indianapolis and Indiana Sports Corp joined fi ve other cities named to the program in September of 2008. The Championship City pilot program
will feature multiple host opportunities of NCAA Division I, II and III men’s and women’s championships through 2012. The centerpiece of the Championship City pi-lot program is a long-term agreement between the NCAA and each host city to bring a wide array of championships and ancillary events to the six geographical areas over the course of several years.
2010 NCAA Division II Women’s National ChampionshipsOffi cials from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) awarded Mesa host duties for the 2010 NCAA Divi-sion II Women's Golf Championships, May 12-15, with prac-tice rounds beginning May 10-11, 2010. The tournament will be held at Longbow Golf Club and co-hosted by Mesa Sports Tourism & Development and Grand Canyon University.
"Landing the Women's NCAA Golf Championship is another great example of Valley leaders working together for a com-mon goal," said Jon Schmieder, president of Phoenix Regional Sports Commission. "Mesa is a prime example of a commu-nity reaching out to partners to secure quality events for the entire Valley."
Newly formed Mesa Sports & Tourism Development, operated by the Mesa Convention & Visitors Bureau, worked in tandem with Grand Canyon University and Phoenix Regional Sports Commission to secure the event. This tournament will represent the fi rst time Grand Canyon University has hosted a championship-level event in Mesa. Considered leaders in the tournament hosting industry, the university has hosted numerous NCAA regional and confer-ence championship golf tournaments in the past, most recently the 2009 NCAA Division II Women's West Regional at The Legacy Golf Resort.
"Grand Canyon University has had great experiences with championship golf, having hosted NCAA regional and national events in the past. We are extremely excited to partner with the city of Mesa in hosting this national championship event," said Grand Canyon University Director of Athletics B. Keith Baker.
Pristine playing conditions will be on deck when the May tournament takes place next spring. Longbow Golf Club was recently ranked as one of the 2009 "Top 100 Resort Courses in The Country" by Golfweek magazine. The 7,003-yard Ken Kavanaugh-designed course boasts expansive fairways and infi nite shot making choices giving the competition an anticipated level of excitement. Hosting the event in Arizona will showcase challenging, desert golf to some of the best teams in the country.
NCAA and Tiffi n University Core Values
Core ValuesThe Association - through its member institutions, conferences and national offi ce staff - shares a belief in and commitment to: Learning Balance Resourcefulness Sportsmanship Passion Service
A student-athlete advisory committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experi-ence and to offer input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Presently, there are separate national SAACs for NCAA Divisions I, II and III member institutions. NCAA legislation mandates that all member institutions have SAACs on their respective campuses, and many NCAA conferences also have established SAACs. The information that follows will assist you in understanding how the network of SAACs, from individu-al campus committees to the national committees, interact and support one another to shape intercollegiate athletics policy. Functions of campus SAACs include:
Promote communication between athletics administration and student-athletes.
Disseminate information. Provide feedback and insight into athletics department issues. Generate a student-athlete voice within the campus athletics depart-
ment formulation of policies. Build a sense of community within the athletics program involving all
athletics teams. Solicit student-athlete responses to proposed conference and NCAA
legislation. Organize community service efforts. Create a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide
committees. Promote a positive student-athlete image on campus.
