2013 Tiffin University Baseball Media GuideTRANSCRIPT
Welcome...
At Tiffi n University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%.
We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing fi eld and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confi dent the future will also be highly successful for Tiffi n University athletics.

Welcome to th i s a th l e t i c season a t Ti ff in Un ive r s i ty. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffi n University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fi tness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the fi eld.

Joe Wilkins is in his fi rst season as head coach at Tiffi n University. He is no stranger to the program having served as an assistant coach from 2006-07 and 2011-12.
In the past two seasons as the pitching coach, Wilkins guided the
staff in lowering the ERA from 7.30 to 5.08. He helped mentor Pat Curtin and Jordan Liette, two key contributors in last season’s fi rst ever trip to the GLIAC Tournament. Curtin was the GLIAC Co-Player of the Year for his efforts on the mound, in the fi eld and at the plate. On the mound, he was 5-1 with a 3.19 ERA. The Dragons went 14-2 in the last three weeks of the season and Liette was a major contributor. He was 4-0 with 29 strikeouts and just four walks for a 1.93 ERA in 28 innings.
Wilkins, also responsible for helping the development of the catchers, saw K.C. Weber earn All-GLIAC honors. He caught in 43 games and hit .299. Weber was an extension of the coaching staff on the fi eld and was as important as anyone in that stretch run.
Wilkins was an assistant coach at Pepperdine (2010), where his responsibilities included training the catchers, helping to develop the offense and coaching fi rst base. He helped second-year catcher Nate Johnson grind through a 54-game season in 2010, in which he caught all but one of 473.1 innings pitched and threw out 17 base runners - the fourth highest season total in school history. At the plate, Johnson led all Waves with nine home runs and 36 RBI en route to being named to the All-WCC Honorable Mention squad.
Wilkins spent the 2009 season coaching the catchers at Wake Forest, where he tutored Cape Cod All-Star catcher Mike Murray. Murray has recently signed with the San Francisco Giants.
Prior to working at WFU, Wilkins spent more than a year at the Florida-based IMG Academies where he worked under former
Joe WilkinsHead CoachCleveland Indians bench coach Ken Bolek as the full-time catching instructor. He helped in the development of 2009 New York Yankees second-round draft pick J.R. Murphy. Murphy hit .627 in the spring of 2009 with 11 home runs in 102 at-bats. He added 34 extra-base hits and struck out just four times.
During his fi rst stint at TU, Wilkins coordinated the recruiting efforts that helped in the transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II and developed athletic marketing fundraising ideas to improve facilities. At Heminger Field, a new press box, back stop and pro-style seating have been added. A locker room, lounge area and coaches offi ces attached to the home dugout were completed in 2011.
During the summers of 2006 and 2007, Wilkins coached in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League. In 2006, he was the third base coach and worked with the hitters, catchers, outfi elders and infi elders for the Delaware Cows. In 2007, Wilkins was the head coach for the Stark County Terriers. As head coach of the Terriers, he worked with players from such collegiate programs as Wake Forest, Kent State and Cincinnati.
Wilkins began his coaching career at Dublin (Ohio) Scioto High School in 2005, working with the catchers and serving as the off-season hitting instructor.
Wilkins earned four letters at Ohio State, earning All-Big-10 second team honors and being named the Most Outstanding Player at the Big Ten Tournament as a senior. His walk off home run vs. Indiana gave the Buckeyes the tournament title. OSU won two Big Ten regular season championships and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including a Super Regional appearance in 1999, during Wilkins’ collegiate career.
Wilkins played professionally for three years, spending time in the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm systems. He led the Northwest League’s Yakima Bears in hitting in 2002.
A native of Columbus, Ohio, Wilkins graduated from Ohio State in 2005 with a degree in human ecology and a specialization in consumer affairs. He earned his master’s of business administration in 2007 from Tiffi n University.

Kurt Rammel enters his seventh season with the Tiffi n University baseball program and his fourth season as a full time assistant. His on fi eld duties include assisting Coach Wilkins with the catchers. In addition, Rammel coaches fi rst base, works with outfi elders, helps with practice organization, and fi eld maintenance. Off the fi eld, he assists in recruiting, plans travel
arrangements, helps with camp development, and builds alumni relations.
Rammel graduated from Coldwater High School in 2002. He spent one season at Defi ance College before transferring to Tiffi n. While in college, Rammel saw action as a catcher and fi rst baseman. He was Honorable Mention all-conference twice, once at Defi ance College and once at Tiffi n. As a sophomore at Tiffi n, Rammel was the 11th toughest strikeout in the nation.
Rammel graduated from Tiffi n University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a double major in sports management and marketing in 2007. He also received his master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management in 2009.

Coleman is a Tiffi n native who graduated from Calvert High School and played four years as
a starter in centerfi eld for Heidelberg, serving as captain. He earned Academic All-America honors. Coleman has a B.S. in Health and Physical Education from Heidelberg.
Coleman served as head baseball coach and athletic director at Bettsville High School (1997-2001) and Arcadia High School (2001-02 school year). Coleman also holds a Certifi cate of Education (K-12).
Coleman owns and operates Sticks Lawn and Landscape LLC and lives in Tiffi n with his wife, Duana, and daughter, Bria (12) and son Branyan (4).
Brian ColemanAssistant Coach
Brian Makowski enters his fi rst season with the Tiffi n University baseball program. His primary duty will be to assist Coach Wilkins with the pitching staff.
Makowski was an assistant coach at Fostoria High School, serving primarily as the pitching coach. The team established the school record for wins in a season with 23, won the fi rst two league championships in school history, as well
as winning fi ve consecutive sectional championships. In addition, the pitching staff set school records for team ERA (2.28) and strikeouts (228) in a season, six pitchers were named fi rst team all-league selections, and three were all-district selections.
Makowski began his coaching career at Heidelberg where he spent three seasons as the top assistant coach and pitching coach. He helped guide the baseball program to a then school record of 32 wins in a season. Under his guidance, the pitching staff was able to lower the team ERA in each of his three seasons, along with establishing four current school records. In addition, a member of the pitching staff garnered fi rst team all OAC honors in each of his three seasons including the 2002 OAC pitcher of the year award.
Makowski earned four letters at the College of Wooster. He was a member of the 1994 team that earned a trip to the Division III World Series, as well as the 1995 team that won the NCAC Championship. He was an All-NCAC selection in 1996.

Brian MakowskiAssistant Coach
Corey Alexander is in his fi rst year as the Graduate Assistant for the Tiffi n University baseball program. He will be assisting with the coaching of the pitching staff.
Alexander comes to Tiffi n after an impressive career on the mound at Siena
Heights. As a senior, he helped lead the Saints to 33 wins, set the single-season record for winning percentage and won the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament to qualify for NAIA nationals for the fi rst time in 18 years. Alexander was 8-4 with 65 strikeouts and a 1.96 earned run average in 105.7 innings. He was a team captain, All-WHAC fi rst team, WHAC Gold Glove Award winner and a NAIA National Gold Glove award winner.
Alexander ranked among the top in single-season history for wins, innings pitched and ERA. For his career, he won 18 games with 143 strikeouts and threw 230 innings, all among the top fi ve in school history. Alexander was also an WHAC Gold Glove Award winner in 2010.
Alexander played in the prestigious Northwoods League in the summer of 2010 for the Battle Creek Bombers. A graduate of Whitmer High School in Toledo, he went on to receive his bachelor’s degree in Sports Management from Siena Heights and is now working on his MBA with a focus on Leadership Studies at Tiffi n University.

Things were not looking so good for Tiffi n as they were 6-14 in the GLIAC, ninth place with just three weeks left in the season. To say the Dragons turned up the heat would be an understatement. TU won 14 of its last 16 games and moved from seventh to fourth in the fi nal two days of the season. Overall, Tiffi n fi nished 20-16 in the GLIAC (4th) and was 25-26 overall. The blazing fi nish put the Dragons in the GLIAC Tournament for the fi rst time in school history.
Tiffi n will have some retooling to do as three of the top four hitters graduated. Among the losses was Co-GLIAC Player of the Year Pat Curtin and fellow All GLIAC honorees Jordan Chiero and Val Helldobler. On the mound, Curtin, Jordan Liette and Chris Pistorio combined to win 15 games. All three have graduated as well. Another loss was the departure of head coach Lonny Allen, Allen, who continues as Tiffi n’s athletic director, was the winningest coach in TU history.
However, the cupboard is not bare for fi rst year head coach Joe Wilkins. He welcomes 21 letterwinners back including six starters. In addition, the Dragons return four players who batted .297 or better to the fi eld.
CATCHING Senior KC Weber, who earned All-GLIAC honors in 2012, is back behind the plate for the Dragons. Weber started 43 games, scoring 20 runs while throwing out 12 runners and hitting .299. Junior Mario Rodriguez could challenge for playing time. He hit .298 at Mott Community College (Mich.).
INFIELD Seniors Tyler Glass and Jordan Stum return after hitting .297 or higher. Glass scored 19 runs, batted .315 and was third on the team, turning 13 double plays. Stum scored 12 runs and hit .297. Senior Roger Christensen led the team, turning 18 double plays and scoring 17 runs. Sophomore Nick Calandra and senior Tayler Glass saw a fair amount of playing time in 2012. Freshman Elijah Sanabria helped the High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology (N.Y.) reach the PSAL Final Four for the fi rst time ever.
OUTFIELD Senior Ryan Williams returns after earning All-GLIAC second team honors. He had two triples, scored 18 runs, drove in 18 runs and batted .314. Among the returners, seniors Ryan Locke and Colin Sallee should see action for the Dragons. Freshmen Garrett Vernau and Cole McCurry are expected to challenge for playing time. Vernau was a two-time all-district selection who helped Newark Catholic High School (Ohio) reach the Final Four of the state championship twice. McCurry earned all-district and All-Ohio Capital Conference fi rst team honors as Olentangy Orange High School (Ohio) went 27-4 and advanced to the regional championship.
PITCHING On the mound, TU has seven players back who threw at least nine games last season. Senior Eric Klepper was second on the squad with three complete games and 41 strikeouts. Sophomore Greg Sombati had a solid rookie campaign, going 3-0 and recording three saves.
Freshmen Logan Sendelbach and Mike Cooperider will be in the mix for time on the mound. Sendelbach was 2nd team All-Ohio Division IV after going 8-0 with 99 strikeouts and did not give up an earned run in 56 innings for Hopewell-Loudon High School (Ohio). Cooperider earned All-Federal League second team honors for Massillon Jackson High School (Ohio).

Tiffi n University’s Heminger Field continued to expand in the off-season before the 2012 season. The home of the Dragons received an improved backstop area with a nicely designed concrete wall and profes-sional net-ting in place of chain link
fence. The fan seating was completely re-worked, with individual seats replacing bleach-ers directly behind the backstop in front of the newly designed press box and concession area. Also new for the 2012 season was the full renovation and expansion of the Dragons dugout area, with individual lockerrooms, baseball offi ces, and a lounge area directly connected to the Dragons’ dugout. The facility will continue to improve with the times as it becomes an integral part of making attending
baseball games a great experience for Tiffi n University fans. Tiffi n University enjoys playing its home games at Heminger Field. One of many attractive new facilities on display, Heminger Field is one of the top baseball fi elds in the region. With capacity for 500, enclosed bullpens, a new fully equipped press box, a renovated backstop area with nettting, improved stadium seating, and a large outfi eld electronic scoreboard, the fi eld offers the Tiffi n University baseball team a great place to call home. The fi eld is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffi n University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU.
Heminger Field is part of the Tiffi n University Athletic Fields, which debuted in the fall of 1997. Also included are two softball fi elds, two soccer fi elds, two football practice fi elds, and a developing cross country course. Another new addition to the fi elds is the Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles. An indoor practice facility is also in development.

One major portion of the build-ing includes an indoor track and four multi-purpose courts that will be used for basketball, vol-leyball, and tennis. The other large portion has artifi cial turf and will be used for practices by the TU football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball, and softball teams, in addition to intramurals, club sports and other recreational ac-tivities. The middle section of the
facility has coaches’ offi ces, locker rooms, an athletic training room, two classrooms, and a food court.
Physical Fitness CenterTU also enjoys using the Tiffi n University Physical Fitness Center, yet another recently expanded facility benefi ting the student-athlete on TU’s ever-growing campus. The facility, which recently doubled in size, features a cutting-edge weight center that is continually upgraded with new equipment.
