    Camp supportingbipartisanship, fundamental

    tax reform while on debtcommittee

    By Nico RubelloPioneer Staff Writer

IG RAPIDS Coming to a consensus onundamental tax reform may be a difficulttask to accomplish by Thanksgiving, but U.S.Rep. Dave Camp believes he and the other 11

embers of the bipartisan super committeean set the stage for that to happen.ogether, six Republicans and six Democratsrom both the House and Senate must reachn agreement by Nov. 23 on how to cut the

ederal deficit by at least $1.2 trillion throughpending cuts, new revenue or a combinationf the two.amp, R-Midland, recognized that theppointment to the super committee byouse Speaker John Boehner comes with

remendous responsibility.f the joint committee cant agree, or if theirgreement is voted down in either chamber oretoed by President Barack Obama, the samemount of cuts will be implemented across theoard, with half coming from defense.o avoid this, finding common ground betweenhe two parties will be crucial. The Budget Control Act that created thisommittee was a big bipartisan vote, so I thinkheres a sense that we need to try a differentodel, said Camp, chair of the House Waysnd Means Committee.e begins his search for common idealsy looking for bipartisan threads in priorgreements, like Simpson-Bowles.s a two-decade veteran of the U.S. House, amp said he is familiar with not only the

epublicans on the committee, but theemocrats as well. For instance, heslready worked with Rep. Chris Van Hollen,-Maryland, when he was a House andays and Means Committee member. Also, emocratic Rep. Xavier Becerra, of California,

s a current Ways and Means member.n the GOP side, hes worked with U.S. Sen.ob Portman, of Ohio, a former Ways andeans member; Rep. Fred Upton, a fellowichigan House Republican who Camp calls

a good friend; and Sen. Jon Kyl, of Arizona.Ive worked with a number of people on thisommission, and I hope thats going to beelpful going forward, he said.ill Ballenger, of Inside Michigan Politics, elieves Camps Ways and Means experienceould make him one of, if not the, leading

ommittee experts on tax policy. If theresny way Republicans will agree to revenuenhancements, like closing tax loopholes andnding deductions and credits, Camp certainlyill play a role in making that happen.amp proposes lowering the statutory rate inrevenue neutral way and then closing off

ax loopholes for individuals and businesses.n March, he proposed lowering the top taxate from 35 percent to an 80-year low of 25ercent.he congressman believes the United Stateseeds a simpler, fairer tax code, whiche says will spur business investment and, onsequently, job growth.ax reform doesnt equate simply to tax

reductions, said Camp on Wednesday whilemaking a stop in Big Rapids.

Its not about cutting taxes; its about reforminghe tax code to make it less complex, morein line with what the world is doing becausewere competing with them (and) simpler forbusinesses and individuals, he said.Camp has witnessed companies leaving theU.S. for countries that can promise them a settax rate, he said.We want those companies located here. Icant tell them what their taxes are going tobe in 20 months because we have so muchof our tax code expires, then its put in placeretroactively. Then it expires again, headded. How can you structure that kind ofinvestment that we need in the U.S. with thatuncertainty?Hed also like to see the United Stateswitch from a worldwide system of taxationto a territorial system. This would meanncouraging companies to bring profits madeverseas back to the U.S. to invest. If you get the investment, you get the jobs

here, he said.As of right now, Camp said hes not ruling outanything including tax increases but thereare some points hes firm on.We have to get on a path where our long-term

obligations and our short-term obligations aresustainable, he added.... Its much easier to just spend. Its goingto be hard to step back from that and reducespending, and thats our primary focus. Ifwe can grow our economy, that helps usaddress the debt and deficit, but its got to bedone in connection with significant spendingreductions.

Tips to Start the School Yearon the Right Track

(NewsUSA) - Back-to-school mayhempresents a number of challenges for parents. Each morning there are breakfasts to make, lunches to pack and extracurricular schedulesto track -- all while trying to get to work ontime. So, how do you navigate the morningchaos and hold onto your sanity? With thesehelpful tips, you can make your back-to-schoolmornings easier:

    1. Stick to a strict bedtime schedule. According

to the Mayo Clinic, school-age children need10-11 hours of sleep each night. Making surekids are well rested will help avoid oversleepingand wasted time getting them out of bed eachmorning.

    2. Get prepared the night before. Pack allschool bags as soon as homework is finished, and lay out school outfits prior to bedtime forthe next day. This shortens the list of morningchores and adds a few extra minutes of rest.

Also, dont wait until early morning to pack arushed lunch with little nutrition value. Preparingthe night beforehand enables parents to packfood with nutrients and vitamins, not justpotato chips and snack packs. For even betterefficiency, plan lunches a week ahead.

    3. Find a quick and balanced breakfast option. Not many parents have time for eggs andpancakes each morning, but there are quick, quality alternatives. Stock up on cereals thatkidswill enjoy and are high in fiber, folic acid, iron, and vitamin C. Try Malt-O-Meal for familyfavorite varieties packed with whole grains. Asan added bonus, Malt-O-Meal is available inresealable bags, which reduces the amountof packaging consumers have to dispose of orrecycle by 75 percent. (BagTheBox.com)

    4. Make a weekly calendar of activities.Organize each family members schedule tomake sure kids are where they need to beat the correct times. Between extracurricularactivities, like sports, clubs, study groups, jobsand friends, it can be a challenge to establishany sort of routine. Set up car pools in casesome events overlap. Input alerts in yourphone, and set an alarm for each to avoidtemporary mental lapses.

    Blinded Veterans FindStrength Through Wounded

    Warrior Program

(NewsUSA) - A lethal roadside bomb woundedMaster Sergeant Jeffrey Mittman on July 7,2005, in Baghdad, Iraq. Though within 30minutes of the attack Mittman was airlifted to ahospital in Baghdad, he sustained permanentbodily damage. When he awoke one monthlater at Walter Reed Army Medical Center inWashington, D.C., he was blinded in his lefteye, his right arm was badly damaged, and he

had lost his nose, lips, and most of his teeth.

After the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001,tales like Mittmans have become increasinglymore common. The wars in Afghanistan andIraq created more injuries resulting in blindnessthan any conflict since the Civil War. Advancedmedical technologies have enabled moreservice personnel to survive serious injuries, which in prior wars would have resulted infatalities.

Back at home, Mittman faced many roadblocksto rehabilitation. Today, as it was back then, 70percent of working-age people who are blindcannot find jobs.

Mittman chose to become involved in a training

program with National Industries for the Blind(NIB) through the Warrior in Transition Program;in this role he supports a critical mission ofemployment for people with disabilities. He

recently received the prestigious Oz Dayaward, presented to a federal employee omember of the military who demonstratesexceptional service in promoting employmenopportunities for people who are blind o

    severely disabled.

I decided long ago -- I can either own [mexperiences] and learn from these experiencesor I can let them own me. I chose the former, said Mittman. I am humbled and proud treceive this honor, and I am eager to continueto be an example to our wounded warriorsand other individuals with disabilities, showinthem what is possible.

Through the Wounded Warrior Program at NIB,wounded veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistaconflicts can become informed about training,

job placement and career opportunities withiNIB and 90 associated nonprofit agenciesacross the country. NIBs mission is tenhance the opportunities for economic anpersonal independence of persons who arblind, primarily through creating, sustaining, and improving employment.

    Delivering Wind Power toProduce Water

(NewsUSA) - Open a faucet, and fresh waterwill quench thirst. Turn a handle, and a showerwill invigorate a person. But what if the tap was

dry, and bringing water home were your job?

lmost one billion people around the world livethis way. One in eight people does not haveimmediate access to clean water, or bluegold, and lugging it home for miles often isthe only option.

Within the next 10-20 years, worldwidedemand for fresh water could outstrip supplyby 20 percent. It soon could cost more thanoil.

Growing up in Greenwald, Minnesota, DanielOhmann was acquainted with pumping water.Windmills were found on most farms. Hisfather installed many windmills to pump waterbefore electricity reached the area.

Years later, as a Maryknoll priest in Tanzania,

Father Ohmann thought about the windmillsas women carried five-gallon water buckets ontheir heads six miles from a river. Drought iscommon in Africa. Villagers often can be seenscooping murky water from makeshift wells inscorched riverbeds.

You dont need to be here long to see thatwater is the number-one need in this part of

frica, said Father Ohmann. The MaryknollFathers and Brothers is the overseas missionsociety of the U.S. Catholic Church foundedduring 1911.

When Minnesota farmers converted toelectricity, many donated their windmills toFather Ohmann. Others were purchasedfrom Nebraska, Australia and South Africato support Tanzanias initiative to ensure allhomes had access to water. Government

inefficiencies, though, eventually closed thewindmills for 15 years.

Father Ohmann was committed to get thempumping again, and more were installed.Twenty windmills now provide water to 18villages. Each fills a 2,000-gallon tank, andwater can be used to irrigate gardens and

orchards. A fully installed system today costsabout $20,000.

People enjoy better health in the villagesserved by clean water, said Father Ohmann.Diarrhea and cholera, once common, are nowrare.

This Season, Dont Let Pump Prices Put aDamper on Your Holiday Fun

    By Trisha Hessinger For NewsUSA

(NewsUSA) - Its easy to get caught up in theholiday hubbub when youre running aroundlooking for the perfect gift. While the holidayscan be expensive, there are ways to save.Firestone Complete Auto Care offers thefollowing tips to help you save money at thegas pump so you can focus on your holidaycelebrations.

Slow Down and Get Some Air

Vehicles use less fuel the slower theytravel. While staying within the speed limits, try dropping your highway speed by 10 mph tosee big savings at the pump.

Calm down. According to the U.S.Department of Energy, aggressive driving canlower your gas mileage by 33 percent on the

highway and by 5 percent in the city.

    Fuel Up

Buy the right fuel. Look in your vehiclesowners manual for the correct octane level foryour vehicles engine. Odds are that it will beregular unleaded, since fewer than 5 percent

of the vehicles on the road require the use ofpremium fuel.

    Drop Some Pounds

Extra weight in your vehicle makes it workharder, hence less fuel mileage. According tothe U.S. Department of Energy, an extra 100pounds in the car can reduce a vehicles fueleconomy by up to 2 percent. If you have atrunk full of junk, empty it out for better fueleconomy.

The holiday season can stretch your walletpretty thin. By following just a few smallsteps, youll have more to spend on holidayfestivities.

    How Do You Define

Natural?(NewsUSA) - Its safe to say neither catsnor dogs give one whisker about whetherthe products they use are eco-friendly. Yetmore pet owners do -- and the pet industry isresponding.

The exploding popularity of sustainable livinghas manifested itself in an increasing numberof products being marketed as eco-friendlyoptions for earth-conscious owners of alltypes of pets. Walk down the aisle of yourlocal grocery store, and youll see countlessbags and boxes whose now-leafy labels boastgreen, natural, or organic claims.

However, the definition of green remains thesubject of much debate. Look no further thencat litter for an example of how the natural

line is blurred: Clay -- the main ingredient ia large majority of litters -- is often touted abeing natural, but it requires strip-mininand can contain silica dust that carries thpotential of damaging the lungs of people andpets. In fact, most cat litters are made out ominerals that can technically be described anatural, but that doesnt necessarily mea

they are sustainable, biodegradable or healthif ingested or inhaled.

The question you must ask yourself, as a peowner, is whether the products you choosactually live up to their eco-friendly billing owhether they are using green-washing --term used to describe how companies usmarketing gimmicks to make their product onlseem more natural.

One company, Worlds Best Cat Litter, urgecustomers to scrutinize labels to make surthat youre getting the type of natural productyou demand. They define natural as productmade of naturally occurring ingredients thaare biodegradable, healthy, safe and derivefrom renewable resources. Worlds Best CaLitter uses the power of natural, whole-kernecorn to stop odor in its tracks. Its grown and i

digestible, dust-free and lacking any chemicaadditives.

Reinforcing their commitment to higstandards, in addition to the original Clumpinand Multiple Cat Clumping Formulas, WorldBest Cat Litter has also launched a trulnatural scented formula providing consumerwho prefer a scented litter with an all-naturalavender oil option -- once again proving yodont have to sacrifice the planet to meeconsumer demands.
