QUESTIONS TRUSTEES MIGHT EXPECT FROM AN OFSTED INSPECTOR
Do trustees: Questions for governors to consider
carry out their statutory functions, such as safeguarding, and understand the boundaries of their role as governors?
• What do you understand as your boundaries as governors?• How many governors have undergone safeguarding training?• How many governors have undergone safer-recruitment training?• What procedures have you in place if there were a safeguarding
allegation made against a senior leader or the head?• How do the school ensure that students are protected from
extremism?• Have there been any safeguarding referrals to the LA / incidents /
serious complaints made to the governing body since the previous inspection?
ensure that they and the school promote tolerance of and respect for people of all faiths (or those of no faith), cultures and lifestyles; and support and help, through their words, actions and influence within the school and more widely in the community, to prepare children and young people positively for life in modern Britain?
• How do governors ensure that the school promotes tolerance and respect in the school and the wider community and prepare students for life in modern Britain? (This question will be asked in all school including those where there is limited diversity of cultures and backgrounds)
ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction, including long-term planning (for example, succession)?
• Can you describe the ethos of the school? What would pupils and parents value most about the schools and its intentions?
• What would you hope this school would look like in 5 years time? What will be its most important achievements?
• Are you about to lose any leaders to promotion? What has the school done to fill this gap?
contribute to the school’s self-evaluation and understand its strengths and weaknesses, including the quality of teaching, and reviewing the impact of their own work?
• Are you aware of the school’s self-evaluation summary?• Do you agree with the evaluation?• Why?• What evidence has convinced you?
understand and take sufficient account of pupil data, particularly their understanding and use of the school data dashboard?
• What are the strengths/weaknesses in the students’ achievement?• Are there any groups / subjects that are of particular concern?• How is the school tackling these concerns?
assure themselves of the rigour of the assessment process?
• How do governors know whether the school’s assessment and data analysis is accurate?
• Are you aware of how the school is developing its assessment systems in the light of recent developments (Assessment without levels)?
are aware of the impact of teaching on learning and progress in different subjects and year groups?
• What do you know about the quality and impact of teaching across the school, in different subjects?
• Are you aware of how leaders (SLs and MLs) are evaluating the impact of teaching?
• Are you aware of the impact of teaching on the learning of different groups of students?
provide challenge and hold the head teacher and other senior leaders to account for improving the quality of teaching, pupils’ achievement and pupils’ behaviour and safety, including by using the data dashboard, other progress data, examination outcomes and test results; or whether they hinder school improvement by failing to tackle key concerns or developing their own skills?
• Can you give examples of how governors have challenged leaders on how they are making improvements to teaching, achievement, behaviour and safety?
• Are you familiar with data dashboard, school progress data, exam outcomes and what they tell you?
• How well have students achieved in 2014? Does this justify the SEF evaluations for achievement?
use the pupil premium and other resources to overcome barriers to learning, including reading, writing and mathematics?
• Do governors know how PP is spent? What is the biggest spend?• Are governors aware of the impact of each line of spending on
students’ outcomes?• What information do you receive on the achievement, attendance,
and behaviour of disadvantaged students?
ensure solvency and probity and that the financial resources made available to the school are managed effectively?
• Is there a deficit or an underspend? What percentage of the total budget is this? What is the reason for this situation? What plans are there to reduce / tackle it?
• How often are you updated on the current financial situation?
Do trustees: Questions for governors to consider
provide support for an effective headteacher?
• How do governors provide support for the head teacher?• What CPD is planned for the head teacher, and why?• How often does the chair visit the school to discuss matters with the
head?
engage with key stakeholders?• What do governors do to seek the views of parents and students?• How do they respond to their views?• What actions have been taken in response to views?

• Are there clear policies in place for recruitment procedures, equality of opportunities?
• What contact with parents is there? Are parents aware of who the governors are and their roles?
• Are committee structures and personnel published on the website?• Are there any summaries of GB meeting minutes/business made
