Take By Elda Ward Special to the North Islander Who says grandmothers can’t be social activists? Certainly Margaret Mead would never have believed that. “Never doubt,” she once said, “that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Campbell River has proven many times over that it is a caring and socially conscious community with ‘thoughtful and committed citizens’. Indeed, we see stories demonstrating this in every community newspaper that is deliv- ered to our doors. One more example of Campbell River’s many ‘small, thought- ful, committed’ groups is the Grandmothers Advocacy Network, fondly known as GRAN. Campbell River’s own GRAN is a committee of local grandmothers representing Campbell River’s participation in a much larger national movement. There are also GRAN advocates all across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands who are part of this vigorous national movement advocating on behalf of the grand- mothers in sub-Saharan Africa who are struggling to feed, clothe and educate millions of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS. Populated predominantly by older women, GRAN is attracting an increasing number of grandmother volun- teers across the country that are dedicated to challenging the status quo with a view to ensuring that Canadian government policies reflect Canadian values, particularly as they relate to supporting the lives of the grandmothers of Africa and the orphaned children in their care. Heading the GRAN groups on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands is Maggie O’Sullivan, the Regional Cluster Leader, a Campbell River resident and a former Dean (now retired) from North Island College. “My passion has been and still is education and I have been so fortunate always to work with strong, intelligent, opinionated, visionary women like the African grandmothers,” said O’Sullivan. “I have also been fortunate to see quite a lot of the world and to work with minorities and indigenous people. Never is it more evident to me that it is the women in these communities who are showing the way in terms of the health and edu- cation as a way out of the grinding poverty found there. Thus Canadian advocates like me take our direction from the African grandmothers who tell us that access to medicines, violence against women and girls and education are the three areas of critical importance to them right now. “Following their directives we, in turn, act as a Canadian voice for our African neighbors and sisters with MPs and government offi- cials. Similarly it is our job to raise awareness of these issues in our own communities.” In June, Maggie was one of 46 Canadian grandmothers from coast to coast who met in Ottawa to strategize how best to bring these issues to the attention of Canadians. Through actions large and small, innovative or tried and true, GRAN will do what it can to alleviate the impact of AIDS on grandmothers and vulnerable children in Africa. Over the past few years, the grandmothers fought for and lost federal legislation that would have enabled Canadian suppliers to provide developing countries with affordable medications for epidemic diseases such as AIDS, malaria and TB. “Although it was a huge setback that Bill C398 was not passed in the House of Commons, we have not given up on trying finding ways to improve Canadian legislation to better assist the Grandmothers of Africa,” said O’Sullivan. “Currently, an urgent priority for GRAN is to fight for more support for the Global Fund.” Created in 2002, the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria, has helped to treat 4.2 million people living with AIDS, 9.7 million people suffering from TB and has provided 310 million insecticide-proofed bed nets to pre- vent malaria.” GRAN will be urging the Canadian Government, which has to date played a leadership role in contributing to the Global Fund, to commit at the fall replenishment meetings to increase its contribution to $750 million (from $540 million) over the next three years. If Canada continues to provide leadership and steps up its contribution, other countries may be encouraged to do the same. If the funding goal could be reached, Dr. Christoph Benn of the Global Fund says eight out of 10 people could get access to effective treatment and prevention. If Campbell River citizens wish to support this worthy cause, a GRAN table of information and postcards for supporters’ signature will be available on Friday, Oct. 25 at the NIC/Timberline Theatre when the documentary by Jan Padgett, Under the Bushy Tree, is shown at 7 p.m. For more infor- mation, please contact Maggie O’Sullivan at 250-286-9778. In last week’s column I speculated that by the close of the Thanksgiving weekend we’d have a better idea of just how good the chum fishing will have been for the 2013 season. A week later the answer is good much of the time but certainly not every day, which is about what can be expected for fish that are migrating quite fast in pulses down the inner south coast.

By all accounts Saturday was the least suc-cessful of the three days and I know a number of experienced chum fishermen who fished hard on a long tide to put a couple of chums in the boat. However on both the Sunday and Monday there was good action up at Greensea Bay and nearby Chatham Point. Fish were caught closer to town at Deepwater Bay but to a lesser extent considering the same push of fish were passing through. Why this should be so is a puzzle as this traditionally product-ive chum fishing location has been under-performing this season compared to places further up Discovery Passage.

I was fortunate enough to get out with my son Tim on the Monday and after a slow start we managed to limit out by lunchtime, although it took us at least four attempts to

get fish number eight in the boat. Having largely overcome the coming adrift 15 seconds after hookup issue I described last week it was a case of keeping the wily chums on for the last 15 inches before sliding over the rim of our landing net. Fortunately the fish were biting steadily by that point in the tide and it was largely a matter of time before we were finished – good fun!

In contrast to earlier trips after chums this season, my surface line being fished at 30 feet deep or less was entirely unproductive on this particular day so I stopped using it after a while. The lack of hits on it was surprising considering the number of fish showing on the surface how-ever we had several tangles with fish hooked deeper down that came rocketing to the sur-face. I’m a slow learner but through hard won experience over the years I’m a believer in fishing a lesser number of lines well rather than a greater number badly.

Last week DFO gave the first in-season updates on the chum return to rivers around

the inner south coast. The esti-mate for the Fraser River is approximately one and a half million fish, a decent but by no means large return, one that will hopefully prove to be larger yet in the final accounting. The first few fish were starting to show in east coast Vancouver Island rivers such as the Puntledge and the Qualicum’s although there’s a long way to go before their escapement targets are met.

The high-pressure system dominating the regional weather for the past few weeks shows no sign of breaking down and in fact the dry weather is forecast to con-tinue until month’s end at a minimum. With the absence of rain it’s likely the chums will be in no hurry to get home, especially for those fish headed into smaller watersheds. It is a well-established fact that salmon are very sensitive to atmospheric pressure and will slow down or speed up their migration according to their sense of water conditions in the rivers. Obviously this varies according to river size but a no rain/lower flow regime will

keep fish at sea longer than the opposite case. All of which suggests we’ll be chum fishing into November at this rate!

Less encouraging news last week came from southwest Vancouver Island where the chum return to the Nitinat system is far below forecast. This is a major chum producer with an escapement target of 225,000 fish and an egg-take target of 20 million eggs at the hatchery there, both of which objectives are a long way from being achieved; not surpris-ingly commercial fisheries in the approach area have been suspended. Hopefully this is not indicative of the WCVI chum return more broadly as their presence is important in terms of ecosystem well being.

Usually by the second half of October I have good reason to go poking around “my” creek, a.k.a. Menzies Creek, looking for adult salmon. However I haven’t been for a couple of weeks and until there’s some rainfall I doubt there’ll be much impetus to do so. Small creeks like this one are all in a low-flow regime once again and coho salmon will like-ly not try and enter freshwater until there’s sufficient flow to enable

MaddAddam is the third novel in a dysto-pian and futuristic trilogy by Canada’s doyen of literature, Margaret Atwood. It follows Oryz and Crake (2003) and The Year of the Flood (2009) in postulating an chaotic future brought about by climate change and genetic disasters.

Atwood, of course, is not a scientist, so the arguments implicit in her writing are not strictly empirical. But, like many authors of her stature, she has earned a respectable credibility because she reads voraciously, observes carefully and thinks critically, attributes that combine with an earthy wisdom to give her the ability to synthe-size ideas and trends with a perspective often denied to specialists. Indeed, like many other novelists and poets, she has the creative cap-acity and the sense for human nature that quali-fies her to anticipate events before they happen — Canada’s media guru, Marshall McLuhan, shrewdly called artists “early warning systems” because the future is discernible to those astute few who are appropriately open and alert to the events of the unfolding present.

Is Atwood’s trilogy a foreboding of disasters to come? Perhaps. The present is still unfold-ing. But writers are inspired by the trends

implicit in their surroundings. They don’t write from positions of uninformed and pointless vacuity. The following dialogue contains her insightful comments made in conversation with Brian Bethune, a noted interviewer and critic (MacLean’s, Sept. 9/13).

Bethune: “Do you go to and fro in your opinion of human nature? Crake, who does not think well of us, is very persuasive and I think he must persuade you sometimes. Yet you have altruistic characters.”

Atwood: “Everybody writing about human beings in any serious way will say the same thing. When we’re good, we’re very, very good, and when we’re bad, we’re horrid. This is not news, because we’re so much more inventive and we have two hands, the left and the right. That is how we think. It’s all over our literature, and all over the way we arrange archetypes, the good version, the bad version, the god, the devil, the Abel, the Cain, you name it. We arrange things in pairs like that because we

know about ourselves.”This dichotomy that we “know

about ourselves” creates the ener-gy for interesting novels — and, unfortunately, for interesting his-tory, too. Indeed, we never cease to be surprised by our capabilities. Modern technology is a wonder of multiple ingenuities; modern warfare is a shock of outrageous atrocities. Modern medicine is a miracle of humane cleverness; modern economics is a disaster of destructive exploitation. Our soci-

eties and our civilizations hover between the precarious polarities of astounding accomplish-ment and brutal devastation — “When we’re good, we’re very, very good, and when we’re bad, we’re horrid.” This is who we are, a subject that Bethune explores further with Atwood.

Bethune: “Ten years ago you told me you thought modern civilization had about 30 years before collapse. And we are down to 20 now, or have there been reasons to change your mind?”

Atwood: “The jury is out. Keep an eye on the weather, which is changing faster than

predicted, and on the new diseases escaping or being made, even as we speak. It’s a race between new tech and biosphere bankruptcy, I’d say.”

Such frank pronouncements could be the stuff of medieval court jesters. They were the only ones, as historians attest, who could speak honestly to the king and court without risk-ing fearful punishments. But, instead of using humour, Atwood couches her honesty in fiction — a fiction so brutally vivid and so possibly prescient that it should invite obstinate rejec-tion. But, like the king and court that welcomed the humour by laughing at themselves, people buy Atwood’s books. They are popular because she articulates, albeit in another form, the pervasive fear that humanity senses about its own vulnerability. Her books are imaginative exercises in vicarious preparation for what may actually happen.

Is Atwood aware of this psychological dynamic? Probably. She knows the human psy-che as well as anyone. But it’s not a dynamic she’s exploiting; it’s one she’s employing in her

Ardent Angler from page 2.them to get up into the headwaters or unless they absolutely have to leave the sea. I suppose at some point I’ll go look around the very bottom end to see if any chums have decided to spawn in the inter-tidal zone but other than that I’ll be like the salmon, waiting for rain.

The run pales in significance compared to many other rivers but all the same there was a pretty good return of pinks to Menzies Creek this year, perhaps a couple of hundred pairs anyway. After a period of near absence they seem to have become re-established without enhancement in both the odd and even years so hopefully the run will grow over time. As always, any salmon are important in these small watersheds that have experienced much reduced salmon runs, with the carcasses providing a much-needed nutrient boost to the stream. If a baseline of pinks and/or chums can be established then

the likelihood of coho doing well increases significantly

In closing I can report that the Quinsam Hatchery crew continues to find extra large barbed treble hooks with pencil lead wound around the shank tangled in the net used to capture chinook brood-stock, three on one day alone! Somebody who doesn’t know how to tie strong knots is obviously attempting to snag salmon on a regular basis.

Grigg from page 3.artistic role as an interpreter on the present and a com-mentator on the future. Which raises the issue of the title of her book, MaddAddam.

Atwood explained that MaddAddam was a name concocted for internet clarity, because it was an invented word that could not be confused with any other during web searches (Ibid.). But it is also a palin-drome — it reads the same whether from left to right or from right to left. “Mad” is clearly evident, as is “Adam”. And “Adam”, who appears as “Adam One” in her book, besides being the first man in the West’s myth of cre-ation — in Judaism, Christianity and Islam — is also the Hebrew word for “human”. So, does the title of the book and culmination of the trilogy actually mean “mad humanity”? Is the palindrome a pronouncement that our prospects are the same regardless of which way they are considered? Is Atwood suggesting that who we are and what we do has an inevitable conclusion?

Atwood is too bright a thinker, too skillful a writer and too careful a person to make such a damning pro-nouncement about humanity. But the thought is already drifting through our collective consciousness. Many sensitive and reflective people in many places are giv-ing serious consideration to the issue of our human character, are doubting if we know what we’re doing, are wondering if we are in control of ourselves — and thus our destiny. MaddAddam just gives a sharper focus to the same worrisome questions we are already pon-dering.

The Tidemark Theatre is proud to present Delhi 2 Dublin on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

Delhi 2 Dublin’s songs and the band itself reflect the cultural diversity present in many major cit-ies around the world. They challenge the defin-ition of urban music and drag it to the intersection of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub Reggae and Electronica. They have created their own niche. Nayar states, “As a band, we’re not interested in making the same album over and over again. The music we’re inspired by changes almost weekly. At the moment, we’re loving Santigold, Major Lazer, Jazzy B, Burial, Buraka Som Sistema, Four Tet, Moombahton, and tons of underground stuff, which is quite different from the music we were listening to when we made our last album.”

The band has played several of the top festivals in Canada, the UK and the U.S. and, in 2011, expanded its horizons to include performances in the Pacific Rim and Europe. A new album and new internation-al touring opportunities all signal that originality and evolution are all part of the Delhi 2 Dublin experi-ence. Described by one magazine as the “United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”, they have become one of Canada’s most buzzed-about bands. This year will only see them enhancing that reputation.

Turn Up The Stereo is both the title of the new Delhi 2 Dublin album and the philosophy behind the release. Tarun Nayar, who handles electronics and plays tabla in the band, adds, “It’s also a metaphor for us turning it up in many ways for this album. We spent 10 times the amount of time and effort writing this album than we have in the past. We really tried to make everything better, from music and lyrics to production and artwork.” Part of the process includ-ed a retreat in Bali. After performing at a festival on the Indonesian island in the spring, Nayar and Seran, joined by violinist Sara Fitzpatrick, guitarist and sitar player Andrew Kim and dhol player Ravi Binning, rented a house and jammed out on the songs. “One of the most enlightening exercises was the day we spent playing all our songs acoustically on a guitar. We’d never been able to do that with our material - it really showed us the strengths and weaknesses of the songs,” says Nayar.

Tickets are $21 for members plus applicable fees and taxes and can be purchased at the Box Office from Tuesday – Saturday between noon and 4 p.m., or found online at www.tidemarktheatre.com.

Free set of 100% Natural Wool Pillows,

with any purchase of a mattress and boxspring set.

Most mattresses out there are made from foams, chemicals and other synthetic materials that can really compromise your health. Many manufacturers of "Natural" mattresses still include harmful foam fillers and chemical fire retardants in their beds, which can off-gas toxic petrochemicals and funky odors. You are literally breathing in poison while your body is trying to reju-

venate.

At Sprout we prefer to make superior long lasting mattresses from all natural components, without the use of any foam fillers or harmful chemicals . Natural means materials that come from nature, from the earth. So you can rest comfortably knowing that

when you sleep with Sprout you sleep with nature.

Ariadne Sassafrass, International Consciousness Facilitator, Healer and Empowerment Coach, is offering a dynamic, life changing workshop called Access Consciousness 5 Days of Transformation, October 31 to November 4. This workshop is a series of three workshops: Access Bars, Foundation and Level 1 and will be held at the Little Red Church on 243 Alpine Street.

Access Classes expand your capacity for consciousness so that you have greater awareness about you, your life, this reality and how you can contribute to create a healthier planet that thrives. With greater awareness, you can begin generating the life you always knew was possible and haven’t yet created.

The first class in ACCESS is The BARS, a nurturing and relaxing process activating 32 points on your head, allowing you to easily and and effortlessly release limitations in all aspects of your life and start receiving. The Bars has assisted thousands of people to change many aspects of their body and their

life including sleep, health and weight, money, sex and relationships, anxiety, stress and so much more. After completing this full day class you become a Bars Practitioner. Many energy healers and bodyworkers, find that adding Access Bars to their current practices is a wonderful contribution to their business.

In The FOUNDATION and Level 1 classes you will receive tools and processes that are pragmatic and easy to use! With these tools you can begin to change what doesn´t work for you in your life so that you can create a life and living you truly desire.

You will also begin to see the points of view that limit you and what you can change that would allow you to function from choice, possibility, and contribution. You are cleared of what stands in the way of you receiving what you desire: You realize how absolutely amazing and incredible you be!

From this new space you begin to contrib-ute to you, your life, others, the Earth and

the Universe, from a place of greater con-sciousness. You will learn 4 powerful hands on healing techniques that you can use for to heal pain, trauma, and a myriad of dis-eases. Pre-requisite is Access Bars. You can take Foundation without

Children under 15 can come for free. Those that are 16-18 can attend half price.

The purpose of Access is to create a judge-ment free world. It empowers individuals to get to the point were they are consciousness enough to create change within themselves so that it is possible to change anything that isn’t working for them in their everyday life.

Once people become more conscious, it will be easier for people to thrive in the face of the shifts that are occurring now on the planet.

Access Consciousness is a World Wide Movement that is currently available in 46 different countries. Please check out accessy-ourawareness.com for more information.
