MASS INTENTIONS

Volunteers needed to help on Wednesday, October 10th. Please

call Sandra at 905-683-8504 to help!

Attention parents of children interested in receiving

the sacraments of

First Reconciliation & First Communion

A very special welcome to all of the children who have

registered for their First Reconciliation/Communion this year

during the registration meeting dates. We are so excited to

get to know you and your family and to begin this beautiful

journey together.

Please drop off your registration forms a.s.a.p. to the Parish

office if you have not done so already. Passport stamping

began last weekend and we kindly ask that you wait until

Father has given the final blessing and the procession is at the

back of the church before sending your children to have their

passport stamped. We look forward to celebrating Mass

together each week as we prepare for these very special

sacraments.

A reminder to parents and Confirmandi that passport stamping

continues at the end of each Mass. Please remember to wait

until Mass has ended and Father has made his way to the back

of the Church before coming up to get your passport stamped.

Also, if you have not done so already, please remember to drop

off your registration packages to the parish office as soon as

possible. Have a blessed week!

This week, we begin another advertising

cycle. Please thank the advertisers when

you can and give them the support of your

business. Please recommend them to your

family and friends. Also, please mention

that you saw their ad in the parish bulletin.

PARISH MISSION/RETREAT

"Homecoming": How to bring loved ones home to the

Catholic Church

Seminar Series at St Francis DeSales Parish

We all have loved ones who have left the Catholic Church.

They are our children. Our grandchildren. Siblings and other

relatives. Friends, neighbours and coworkers. Our hearts break

for them as they brave the wilderness of life, outside the hearth

and home of the Catholic Church. How do we bring them home?

And why did they leave in the first place?

Understanding the answer your loved one gives to that last

question is just as important as the first — if we don’t grasp the

real reasons people leave the Church, we’ll never be effective in

our attempts to help them home.

This is the subject of "Homecoming: How to Bring Family and

Friends Home to the Catholic Church" by Cale Clarke, Director

of The Faith Explained Seminars, here at St Francis DeSales

Parish on October 15, 22, and 29 at 7:30 PM. Hope to see you

there!

QUESTION & ANSWER

I find that the veneration of Mary is excessive. How can

we justify this? Mary is only a saint. Does the bible

support this excessive veneration?

From the gospel of St. Luke, we find that there is angelic and

human veneration of Mary.

In the Annunciation scene of St. Luke 1:28, the literal

translation of Gabriel’s greeting is thus: “Greetings O Woman

who has been graced, the Lord is with you.” It is unusual for

angels to praise those to whom they are sent. Usually persons

are called by their name or simply given a curt instruction.

You can look in vain for an angelic greeting in the Old

Testament. No angel calls a human being “graced” or

“favoured” prior to being called by their name. Only Noah

and Moses have been declared to have “found favour in the

eyes of the Lord” (Gen 6:8; Exod 33:17). So at the very least,

Gabriel’s greeting suggests tat Mary is on par with the saviour

of humanity (Noah) and the saviour of Israel (Moses). Gabriel

is showing honour and veneration to Mary in an

unprecedented way.

In the Visitation scene of St. Luke 1:41-45, we find that St.

Elizabeth’s greeting of Mary is way out of proportion. Mary

and Elizabeth were two women of vastly different social

standing. Mary was a teenager (by our standards today)

around the age of 15 engaged to a manual laborer. By contrast,

Elizabeth is an elderly woman of high status. Elizabeth lived

near Jerusalem, the cultural and economic capital of Judea and

her husband, Zachariah was a high ranking priest.

In ancient societies, honour flows from younger to older, from

low statue to high status. But this is overturned. When Mary

shows up at Elizabeth’s home, the elderly woman “exclaimed

in a loud cry” her young cousin from the north. This

exclamation is very same way a Levite priest would do when

he was in the presence of the Ark of the (old) Covenant.

Indeed Mary is the Ark of the (New) Covenant, for she carried

in her womb, God Himself. Moreover, Elizabeth’s greeting

is “over the top”: “Blessed are you among women.” This is a

Hebrew idiom meaning: “you are the most blessed of all

women.”

It’s biblical. Mary is already venerated in Sacred Scripture.

September 7th, 2018

My dear friends,

Families are the heart and soul of our Catholic community. As

such, I am pleased to invite families across the Archdiocese of

Toronto to our first official diocesan gathering of families,

“Family at the Heart of Service”.

Grandparents, parents, and children of all ages are invited to join

us on Saturday, November 17 at Our Lady Queen of Poland

Church in Scarborough from 9am – 4pm. The day will be filled

with talks from families, prayer, praise and worship, and hands

on service activities. I will also be speaking on the importance of

family life in our faith journey.

I am grateful for all that families do to make faith a central focus

and priority of their family life. By sharing our gifts of time and

talent with one another, families not only enrich their homes but

also strengthen our parishes, modeling the example of Jesus to

love and to serve. In the words of St. Peter, “Like good stewards

of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever

gift each of you has received”.

Please be assured of my prayers as you journey with your family

through the ups and downs of daily life. The family unit is a gift

from God – one that we must work at infusing with mutual

support, patience, and boundless love. I pray that our time

together will be an opportunity for renewal and inspiration in the

company of your loved ones.

Sincerely in Christ,

Thomas Cardinal Collins

Archbishop of Toronto

A LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL

MOTHER’S GROUP

Please come join us for the first SFDS Mother's Group meeting of

the season! Mother's Group meetings will commence on

Wednesday, October 10th in the church foyer at 7:45 PM

where we will begin with the Rosary, time of prayer and a fruitful

meeting on how we can find more time of prayer and solitude in

the busy lives we lead as moms and within our families. If you

have not had a chance to come out to a meeting before, please feel

welcome to come, recharge your batteries and meet fellow

Catholic moms in your church community. Hope to see you there!
