A three-way stop street has final-ly been erected in Kuils River,much to motorists’ satisfaction.

The three-way stop street – a tem-porary measure, was put up inLangverwacht Road on Wednesdayto alleviate the pressures from traf-

fic as motorists who parked at theKwik-Spar battled to get on to theroad.

“We are happy that we finallyhave a sense of relief,” says KobusNagel, a resident who frequentlyuses the road and the shop.

“It was a huge problem for allroad users as it was a problem to geton to Fisant Road. Since last year

I tried to get some kind of stop streetor raised intersection in place as itwas problematic for residents whodid their shopping and tried to getback into the road. You will bestanding stationary for a really longtime before you get a chance to getonto the road.”

Councillor Bertus van Dalen ini-tiated the three-way stop after he re-

ceived complaints from several re-sidents.

“We also received a petition fromthe people wanting us to put up stopstreets. This is only a temporary so-lution as a Checkers will be built atthe end of the year and the plan thenis to have a circle erected to maketraffic smoother.”

He says the stop street will be

monitored for a month to see howit works for the traffic.

“We will look at it and then assessit, but the circle will definitely beerected at the end of the year,” hesays.

“We are hoping that this three-way stop street will better the driv-ing and shopping experience for theresidents,” Van Dalen concluded.

Residents from Brackenfell,Kraaifontein and Durbanvilleare said to be the happiest withservices rendered by the City ofCape Town.

This is indicated by the most re-cent community satisfaction sur-vey conducted by the city – the re-sults were released in May.

This survey has been conductedsince 2008, and measures the per-ception of residents toward serv-ice delivery, on a scale of poor,fair, good very good or excellent.

“The perception survey meas-ures in which areas the city is do-ing well so that we can continueour performance, and where pos-sible, enhance levels of service de-livery. It also measures areas inwhich the city can improve. Theinformation that the survey pro-vides is invaluable as it assists usto strategically identify and workto meet the needs of all our citi-zens,” says mayco member for cor-porate services, Demitri Qually.

The survey was conducted byTNS, to according to Qually, en-sure scientific correctness and in-clude a representative sampleacross the city.

Three thousand face-to-face in-terviews were conducted with res-idents and 700 telephonic inter-views with businesses in the city.

It also included five focusgroups with residents to probe andinvestigate issues in depth.

Eighty percent of the residentsin the northern district, which in-cludes Brackenfell, Kraaifonteinand Durbanville, rated the city’soverall performance as good, verygood, or excellent.

This was a slight dip from lastyear’s 84 percent in the same area.

The western districts of Milner-ton, Table View and Melk-bosstrand reflected a 67 percentsatisfaction, followedby the south-ern district with 65 percent.

Bellville and Boston as part ofthe Tygerberg district scored 62percent, and residents of MitchellsPlain, who are less satisfied, 56percent.

According to Qually these over-all performance trends over thelast five years have been positiveand represent a general upwardtrend in residents’ satisfaction.

Overall, 63percent ofresidents inthe whole ofCape Townrated its per-formancegood, upfrom 62 per-cent lastyear, 57 per-cent in2009/2010, 54percent in2008/2009and 50 per-cent in2007/2008.

He added:“In terms of residents’ and busi-ness’ interaction with the city,most scores have shown signifi-cant increases both in the short-and long-term.

“It is also pleasing to note that

perceptions of the mayor and ofsenior city management in deal-ing with city issues have im-proved.”

Eighty four percent of business-es said thatoverall, theCity ofCapeTown’s per-formancewas good,very goodor excel-lent – upfrom 80percent in2010/11.

The sur-vey fur-thermoreindicatedthat essen-tial servic-

es remain a relative area ofstrength for the city overall, par-ticularly water provision, sewer-age and sanitation as well asrefuse collection.

“Stormwater drains being regu-

larly cleaned and prevention ofstormwater flooding has shownimproved ratings by residents inthe past year and continues as apositive upward trend.

“In terms of community servic-es, parks have shown an improve-ment in both the short- and long-term, while library services con-tinue to be rated by residents asgood,” he said.

Areas in need of improvementinclude roads, civic halls, andhealth services.

“Health is a key concern for thecity. Scores remain average to lowespecially waiting times at clinics.Public transport scores havedipped as have town planning andtourism,” he said.

“Law enforcement scores haveimproved overall both in the long-term and in the past year. Illegaldumping, illegal land settlementand noise have again been identi-fied as being important to resi-dents.”

Qually concluded that the2011/12 survey results are encour-aging for the city.

City services get public approval

The City of Cape Town will be upgrading andexpanding its Public Transport Interchanges(PTIs) over the next five years, to accommo-date the growth in demand for access and mo-bility across the city.

There will be a specific focus on 25 inter-changes, with the improvements costingaround R321 m.

This improvement programme forms partof the city’s mobility strategy, which sup-ports the development of a balanced trans-port system.

It focuses on all elements of our transportsystem: rail, bus, taxi, cycling, pedestrians,parking management, freight, traffic man-agements, information and data.

“Our proposed upgrades will ensure thattransport is accessible and inclusive, provid-ing links between the communities and em-

ployment, education, health, communityservices and other services. Additionally, wewant to ensure that they become interestingsocial spaces and lively parts of the City,”said Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral com-mittee member for transport, roads andstormwater.

The City of Cape Town currently has over213 public interchanges of different sizes andfunctionality. These facilities are locatedalong the rail and road based public transportnetwork where commuters can change be-tween different types of transportation. Inthis regard, an interchange is defined as aplace where transport services meet.

“Over 54 percent of our commuters dependon public transport, whether by road ortrains. As a result, most of the public trans-port interchanges are overcrowded due to

growth in demand over the past years. Theyneed to be expanded urgently,” said Herron.

A number of the projects are currently indesign, tender and under construction. Up-grades are scheduled at the following inter-changes: Cape Town CBD, Mitchells Plain,Lentegeur, Du Noon, Retreat, Wynberg, Bel-lville, Nyanga.

New interchange projects are scheduledfor: Kuyasa, Bayside, Somerset West, Imiza-mo Yethu, Masiphumelele, Nomzamo, Samo-ra Machel, Scottsdene, Wallacedene, Mak-haza, Nolungile, Macassar, Durbanville andVrygrond.

Precinct developments include provisionof signage, CCTV and surveillance facilities,lighting, landscaping, integration of tradingfacilities, and health facilities.

“We are working towards an integrated

transport network for the City where the var-ious modes connect seamlessly in a commut-er-focused way. The provision of dignifiedand safe transport hubs is an essential com-ponent of an integrated transport system.”

“It should be noted that once the processfor acquiring professional service providersand additional capacity is completed, the af-fected subcouncils, ward councillors and af-fected communities will be consulted on thedesign and plan for the facilities,” said Her-ron.

Registration is now open for the Kuils RiverCommunity Police Forum (CPF) chairper-son elections, which will be held this year inNovember.

“The elections take place every two years,and all organisations wishing to be involvedin the CPF have until the beginning of Octo-ber,” said Captain Isaac van Niekerk.

To register, organisations must pick up aform at the Kuils River Police Station, which

will have the criteria for the candidates, andreturn the form with a letter of credence.

“When picking up the registration form,the organisation is also given a copy of theCPF constitution showing what is expectedfrom the chairperson, and what the commu-nity expects,” said Van Niekerk.

Three months before the final election, thedate for the Annual General Meeting (AGM)will be set. This is where the new chairper-son will be announced after deliberations bythe current CPF and police during the month

of November.The candidate will be judged according to

criteria provided by the police upon apply-ing for registration.

“We need people that can represent thecommunity for the police, and to help withkeeping Kuils River safe,” said Van Niekerk,adding that “The right people for the job willbe those that the community can trust andrespect, and who will set an example and en-gage with both the police and residents ofKuils River.”

The homeless in Bellville willbenefit now that the local nightshelter has been welcomed backinto the fold of what is consid-ered the biggest night shelter or-ganisation in the country.

Bellville Night Shelter was hand-ed over to the umbrella body of shel-ters, The Haven Night Shelter, dur-ing a function at the shelter lastweek. It will be officially incorpo-rated under their wing from 1 July.

The shelter stays the property ofthe City of Cape Town.

Bellville Night Shelter opened itsdoors in 1987 and later broke awayfrom the umbrella body to be inde-pendent.

Rev Phillip Bam, chairman of theHaven Trustees’ Committee saidyou come to a stage where you real-ise you cannot continue. “It is thena wise move to pass it on to some-one,” he said.

“All of you have been giving ofyourself. You are handing overyour jewel to probably the best shel-ter organisations in Cape Town andprobably in South Africa,” he said.

Hassan Khan, CEO of The HavenNight Shelter, thanked the committee of theBellville Shelter for what they have built up.

Denise Robinson, one of the foundingmembers of the Tygerberg Association for

Street People (TASP) and shadow deputyminister of health, said government couldn’tdo it all. “We all need to be lobbyists and dowhat we can in our private capacity,” she

said.The formal acceptance was signed by rep-

resentatives of The Haven Night Shelter andthe Bellville Night Shelter.

Two sets of tie-break dance-offs between dancers of twoschools were among the high-lights of the semi-finals of theDanceCraft Studios YouthDance Challenge that wereheld two weeks ago.

On Saturday 5 May dancersfrom schools in the northern sub-urbs showcased what they havelearned since last taking to thefloor with schools from the CityBowl and Milnerton and Blou-berg region getting their turn thefollowing day.

“The couples showed that theyhad completely settled into thebasics of the quickstep and thecorner turns were neat. The lock-step was added for the semis andall couples were able to show nicelocking,” said Marina Milanovi-ch from DanceCraft Studio whoorganises the event with Tyger-Burger as official media sponsor.

The contestants also improved

on their Latin sways whichproved troublesome in the initialstages of the competition.

“The mambo was causing a bitof problems on the rhythmicalside in the beginning, but by thesemi-finals the majority of thecouples settled nicely into thebeat. In the mambo, we also sawsome nice underarm turns,” Mi-lanovich says.

She was equally impressedwith the improvements made inthe rumba.

“In the rumba, the Cuban walkwas added, in which the gentspresent their partners in an ele-gant round walk,” she says.

It was a tough decision for thejudges following the dancing ses-sion of the Settlers contestants.

There was a repeated tie be-tween the same two couples. Af-ter the first set of three dances,the results showed a tie betweenMarlon Oranzie and partnerMelissa Petersen and LeightonMeyer and Angelica Martz. Allthree couples including clear

winners RudgertStuurman and Car-men van Wyk wereasked to perform allthree dances again.

Again the pointswere the same. Thejudges requested athird dance-off andeventually Meyerand Maritz wereeliminated.

The judgeshadanequally difficulttask in judging thecouples from TableView High. Danc-ing were Colby Halland Tamaryn Bak-er, Peter van derWesthuizen andTristan Nel, andKevin Nel and TamiGregan.

Hall and Bakerwere tied with Neland Gregan whenthe points were to-

“We want the community to know whatsector policing is about, and what unitsare involved in keeping the Kuils Rivercommunity safe.”

This is what Captain Isaac van Niekerkhad to say about the Sector 3 policing OpenDay which took place on Saturday 5 May.

“The main idea was to showcase Sector 3and all the units involved, as well as provideall the relevant contact details and educatepeople on the different equipment we all useto fight crime,” said Van Niekerk, addingthat, “there were various units on display,including the Forensics Unit, ExplosivesUnit, Mounted Unit, Metal Theft Unit andmany more including all the various securi-ty companies. This shows that we are unitedin the fight against crime”.

Another organisation involved on the daywas the Pink Ladies, who are known for

their help involving missing persons. On theday, they made certificates for children thathave all the relevant details that the policewouldneed to start an investigation, andhadover 300 children come in to have their cer-tificate made.

“The Pink Ladies had the busiest exhibi-tion, and officers had to come help themprocess the information because of thequeue which was forming,” said ConstableMaria Compion, who was directly involvedin organising the day.

Parkedoutsidewereall thevarious securi-ty company and ambulance vehicles fromthose participating, and even a Nyala, whichis an armed vehicle used for transporting po-lice to and through riots.

“We are very happy with how the dayplayed out. The interest from the childrenand adults alike showed us that the commu-nity is interested and appreciate all the hardwork these men and women put in everyday,” said Van Niekerk.

Journalists from TygerBurgerlast week examined the pros andcons of a career in journalismwith learners from Hector Peter-son Secondary school in Wal-lacedene.

This session formed part of agreater career exhibition organisedby the Khanyisa Learning Projectof the University of Stellenbosch.

People from all different careerbackgrounds were invited – ac-countants, geologists, designers – tomention only a few, to showcasetheir industries.

To show the children the ropes,senior journalists Jana Bekker, De-sireé Rorke, Leon Steenkamp andAndré Bakkes, were on hand at the

nalism in South Africa if theselearners are really interested inpursuing it as a career. I don’t knowif it was our informative presenta-tion or the free gifts, but they cer-tainly seemed keen,” said Bakkes.

Rorke added: “Apart from theircuriosity about the industry, manychildren expressed a desire to knowmore about the inner workings ofgovernment and how it influencedtheir daily lives. What struck memost was the longing of these un-derprivileged children to escapethe shackles of poverty.”

According to Rorke, benefits of acareer in journalism involve manyopportunities to meet and minglewith people from all spheres of so-ciety, from celebrities to politi-cians. “Apart from that, it is alsodeeply satisfying to be the voice of

the voiceless. But if you are in it forthe money, it is prudent to walk onto the next stall,” she said.

Learners actively participated ina discussion about the importanceof press freedom and the role of thepress in the South African contexttoday.

Promotional gifts from Tyger-Burger and Die Burger were distrib-uted to the children.

“This exhibition was planned tohave a more personal touch thanthe exhibitions our learners are ac-quainted to. They are used to exhi-bitions where they mostly receivepamphlets. From our observations,not much impact is made in theseexhibitions. Learners simply go toeach stall, listen to what the exhibi-torhas to say, andcollect pamphletsthey rarely make use of,” said or-ganiser Thobeka Msi from theKhanyiza Learning project.

The power of social networking and thestrength of the SA Twitter communityhave flexed its muscles and the TwitterBlanket Drive (“#TBDZA”) is under wayonce again.

The idea is for “Tweeps” to meet up(“tweetup”) at venues around the countryon the same day, at the same time to sharea warm cup of coffee – and to donate ablanket or two.

There are 800 000 Tweeps in SA. If 1 per-cent contribute, 8 000 blankets can be col-lected.

Along with Johannesburg, Durban,Port Elizabeth and other South Africancities, Capetonians will be part of the big-gest tweet-up on 26 May from 18:00 to 22:00at the Fire and Ice Hotel (021 488 2555),Cape Town.

Even though “fitness” was cen-tral to everything on Saturdaynight, there were various catego-ries which spoke to different peo-ple. Ms Bikini is always a favouritewith the men and for the women

there was the Beach Body Modelcategory.

The first official Mrs Cape TownPhilanthropic Pageant was hostedat the Golden Valley Casino inWorcester on 5 May. The glitteringevent was a celebration of “ordi-nary women achieving the extra-or-dinary”.

The representative of Cape Townselected as Mrs Cape Town, is Su-zann Botha from Plattekloof. Firstprincess is Chantal Witthuhn fromKleinmond, and the second prin-cess is Burnedette Bekker fromBrackenfell.

The finalists underwent a sixweek preparation period, includingteam building activities and assess-ment by the panel of judges.

The judges were looking for awoman who can use her skills, net-work and experience to have a posi-tive effect in the lives of the poorand destitute.

qualities, and a spontaneous, so-phisticated personality.

The newly-crowned Suzann’s ob-jectives are to uplift her communityand to initiate new projects in sup-port of the projects of RolemodelsFoundation, an NPO registeredwith the department of social devel-opment.

During the lead-up to the event,Suzann managed to secure R200 000clothing from Clothing City for theunderprivileged.

Die bruilofsanger van Goodwood sing virenigiemand wat wil luister, want daar is ietsin sy hart wat die wêreld moet hoor.

“Because, you come to me, with naught sa-ve love,” sing Pieter le Roux (84). Die dieptenoorstem weergalm deur die kamer. Syvrou, Hermine, sit oorkant hom en luisteraandagtig na die liedjie wat sy al ’n duisendkeer gehoor het.

Pieter het “Because” gesing by die eerstetroue in 1949 waar hy ooit gesing het.

“Daar het eendag ’n dametjie na my toe ge-kom en gevra dat ek by haar troue moet sing.Ek was bietjie gespanne, maar oor die jarehet ek gewoond geraak daaraan,” sê Pieter,voordat hy byvoeg dat sy hele familie musi-kale gene het.

Die bruilofsanger sal gewoonlik ’n liedjiesing net nadat die paartjie die ringe geruilhet.

Die bruid, bruidegom en al die gaste in diehuis van God sal dan luister na Pieter se he-melse stem.

“Ek is daardie dae 10 sjielings en ses pen-

nies betaal! Dit was ’n groot klomp geld,hoor,” lag hy. “Met tien en ses kon jy ’n broekkoop!”

Pieter haal ’n boekie uit en spog so ’n biet-jie daarmee – sonder om so ver te gaan omsy eie beuel te blaas. “Ek het elke liewe trouewaarby ek gesing het, hierin geskryf!” sê hy.

Daar is vele inskrywings in sy boekie, metdie bruid se naam, die tyd en die kerk watdaarin pronk.

TygerBurger blaai deur die boekie en kies’n naam uit die sowat 250 en vra, “Kan jy ont-hou watter kleur hare Ida Strydom gehad hettoe sy in 1954 getrou het?”

Pieter dink diep en antwoord: “Haar harewas bruin! Ek sien nog hul gesigte so voormy!”

Hy het al ’n paar van die bruide gebel ophul 50ste huweliksherdenking en hul geluk-gewens.

Partykeer sal die bruid baie verbaas weesen uitvra hoe weet Pieter nou dat hul al 50jaar getroud is.

Hy sal antwoord en dan kom al die wonder-like gedagtes van gister weer in die gesprekop.

“Net nadat ek gesing heten gaan sit het, het ek haargesien en gedink vir háárgaan ek inkatrol!” Hermi-ne lag en sê: “Jy moet niedit skryf nie hoor!”

The City of Cape Town’s waterand sanitation department is em-barking on a voluntary boreholeand wellpoint registration andre-registration initiative as partof its monitoring and researchprogrammes.

The department’s registration in-itiative will involve both boreholeand wellpoint users.

Wellpoints are shallow water ex-traction shafts with a depth not ex-ceeding 10m that are mostly usedfor small to medium-sized residen-

tial gardens.Boreholes are much deeper ex-

tractions which are more suitablefor the irrigation of larger grassedareas and gardens.

The information supplied by resi-dents during registration or re-reg-istration, will be captured in a com-prehensive database for internaluse and a unique registrationnumber will be allocated to everyregistered borehole/wellpoint,against the erf number/address.

In return, residents will receive afree weatherproof registration sign

indicating that the water source onthe property originates from a bore-hole/wellpoint.

The department’s water inspec-tors will deliver the signs and certif-icates to the property owners at nocharge and will also conduct aquick inspection of the borehole/wellpoint to make sure that the wa-ter used on the property is indeedcoming from the groundwater re-source.

This is necessary in order toavoid the issuing of fines to personsirrigating with groundwater out-

side of the prescribed wateringtimes which is between 10:00 and16:00 on any day.

“It must be stressed that this in-formation is strictly for environ-mental monitoring and researchpurposes andmembersof thepublicwill be participating on a voluntarybasis.

“Specific ervenwill be registered,not the property owners or occupi-ers themselves.

“This is not a revenue or billingexercise and owners or occupierswill not be billed for their borehole

or wellpoint water usage or theownership of a borehole or well-point,” said the City’s mayoral com-mittee member for utility services,Shehaam Sims.

To register voluntarily, residentssimply need to contact the City’sWater Demand Management Sec-tion to inform them of a borehole orwellpoint located on their property.

The City of Cape Town received a platinumaward for having excelled in the Departmentof Water Affairs’ now well-established BlueDrop drinking water quality assessment.

The city has now been recognised for itsperformance in the Blue Drop Awards Pro-gramme for four years in succession.

The city’s score for this year increased to98,14 percent from 97,61 percent in 2011, de-spite moving from second to sixth positionin the overall ranking in the country.

The city received the award for the bestperformer in theWesternCapeand theWem-mershoek Water Treatment Plant receivedthe award for the best large water treatmentplant in the country.

The manager of scientific services,Mpharu Hloyi, was awarded as the runner-up for the Women’s Award.

In addition the city received four otherBlue Drop awards as the bulk provider to ar-eas in the Stellenbosch and Drakenstein mu-nicipalities.

The city did exceptionally well in the Reg-

ulatory Performance Management System(RPMS) and was recognised as one of the topperformers in the country by means of theRPMS Appreciation Award.

The Blue Drop incentive-based regulationprogramme endeavours to facilitate anddrive continuous and sustainable improve-ment in service delivery and drinking waterquality and to ensure steadfast coverage ofun-serviced areas.

The Blue Drop process measures and com-pares the results of the performance of waterservice authorities and their providers.

The Department of Water Affairs com-mended the City of Cape Town in the 2012Blue Drop certification report for being con-sistent in complying excellently with theregulatory requirements.

“The city can take pride in this achieve-ment, which reflects our commitment toservice excellence and the sustainable provi-sion of drinking water of the highest quali-ty,” said Shehaam Sims, the city’s mayoralcommittee member for utility services.

This week the National Treasury recom-mended that the South African PoliceService reduce its staff members by 9 000,which could possibly lead to no moremembers being recruited as from 2013.

Police officers are already under pres-sure due to insufficient numbers and re-sources.

Service delivery protests are set to hitan all-time high this year. The people arefrustrated and restless and the tension isgrowing.

The question is now: Who will be left tofight the good fight?

Reservaat-personeel het eiehandig die oudrade verwyder, aangesien die buite-omhei-ning nou voldoende is.

Sonder enige vorige konsultasie of kennisgaan die waterafdeling toe voort om d.m.v.kontrakteurs ’n groot, sterk, palissade-hei-ning om hul reservoirs te installeer!

Die reservaat-bestuur het vergeefs pro-beer om die proses te keer.

Permanente skade is aan inheemse planteaangerig, en daar is geen verskoning nie, be-halwe dat hul departement sal betaal vir re-habilitasie! (Met watter inheemse plantenogal?)

Dit was geheel en al onnodig, aangesiendie hele reservaat goed omhein is, en daar24 uur-sekuriteit is.

Indien die afdeling geld moet spandeer,kon hul dit eerder aangewend het om hul wa-terafloop na die stormwaterkanale te herlei,eerder as in die reservaat, waar ’n vleilandonnatuurlik geskep is.

Indringergras groei ook binne die gesloteheinings, sodat bestuur dit nou nie meer kanbeheer nie.

Baie geld kon gespaar gewees het met be-hoorlike konsultasie.

Well done to the Western Cape Govern-ment’s latest soup kitchen initiative.Styled on a project used in Brazil, soupwill only be provided to people who areprepared to work for it. The work entailshelping keep the streets and parks cleanand once you have completed your taskyou are given a voucher which can be ex-changed for food.

It is a brilliant concept as it instils inpeople a realisation that if you want some-thing you need to work for it. Possibly thesame idea can be considered by local mu-nicipalities, civic action groups, churchgroups and any other organisation thathas interaction with people in need.

A little thought and a host of potentialjobs could be added and I am convincedthat a training fund would be well sup-ported to provide skills for expansion ofthe concept.

I am certain that forward thinking resi-dents would rather give a R5 donation permonth to a fund of this nature than a beg-gar, who is probably going to use it for adrink or drug purchase. One only has tostop at a robot in the Tyger Valley areato see the difference in attitude betweena beggar with a cardboard sign and a bud-ding entrepreneur (very often from otherAfrican countries), selling a variety ofitems.

As concerned residents I believe wehave a choice of creating a “nation of beg-gars” or supporting initiatives of this na-ture.

So often in your newspaper I have readthe letters of people complaining aboutdogs and cats. In particular a lady lastweek spoke of a cat who was ruining hergarden. I am an animal aromatics practi-tioner and keen gardener so I know fairlywell what plants animals like and dislike.We need to respect other people’s spacesand likes, establishing boundaries with-out harming any individual or animal.

In Kathmandu the villagers, in conjunc-tion with the WWF, have resorted toplanting camomile flowers and mint

along the edges of their farmland, to keepaway wild animals like the rhinos and ele-phants, which destroy crops. The mintand camomile repel the animals as it isa fragrance they dislike, and it brings ina greater return cash crop.

Keeping this in mind what can peopleplant in their gardens that will keep catsout?

. Plectranthus caninus – This is a com-mon plant found all over Cape Town usu-ally used in municipal sidewalks and gar-dens. It has a very distinct smell, a mix

between ginger and mint. Itgrows in sandy soils and is soeasy to just break a piece off andplant it.

. Lavender,mint andruehaveverydis-tinct smells that cats do not like.

. Another thing cats don’t like is thesmell of citrus – So throw your lemon,naartjie and orange smells in amongstyour beds.

. Try some chicken wire in amongstyour flowers. Cats do not like the textureof the chicken wire on their paws.

. Mulch with bark or pips in andaround your plants.

If you want to do somethingright, go learn from the best,goes the saying, and that is exact-ly what the City of Cape Town didwhen they recently visited theNew York Police Department(NYPD).

The NYPD is famed for being oneof the most effective police depart-ments in the world, with an illustri-ous reputation, which has resultedin countless movie scripts and tele-vision series over the decades –think NYPD Blues, CSI New York,The Super Cops, just to mention afew.

Established in 1845, the NYPD isnot only the oldest but also the larg-est municipal police force in theUnited States, and the second larg-est overall law enforcement agencyin the States.

It has the primary responsibilityof law enforcement and investiga-tion within the municipal bordersof the city – a mandate very similarto that of the law enforcers and Met-ro police of the City of Cape Town,save for the workings of the SouthAfrican Police Department.

With a population of 8,3 millionpeople in an area of only 790 square

kilometres, the Big Apple is themost populous city in the UnitedStates and one of the most denselypopulated in the world.

It is also the most linguisticallydiverse city in the world with asmany as 800 languages spoken.

It is for all the above reasons thatthe City of Cape Town’s safety andsecurity committee, thought it pru-dent to go learn fromthisvaliant po-lice department, in order to shapeup safety in the Mother City.

The various heads of the safetydepartments of the city, accompa-nied chairperson of the committeeCllr Carin Brynard to New York fora one-week educational tour.

“During these seven days we hadan in-depth look at several of theprojects rolled out by the NYPD, es-pecially those which involve com-munity outreach,” Brynard told Ty-gerBurger last week, shortly afterher return, and added that the citywould start investigating variousoptions in the coming months to seehow similar projects could be im-plemented in Cape Town.

One such project, which im-pressed the delegation most, andwould be according to Brynard es-sential in our city, is the ComstatProgram.

This IT solution integrates all the

intelligence statistics in the city.“In this way all transgressions

and transgressors will be recordedon one programme, which will in-corporate by-law, traffic and drugrelated offences. The city willthus be able to identify andprofile serial offenders andour statistics will be more upto date, accurate and bettermanaged,” she said.

She adds: “With a systemlike this in place manpowerwill also be better managed.We are currently investigat-ing the costs involved in sucha system and whether the citycould afford it.”

Community outreach pro-grammes implemented by theNYPD were also scrutinisedby the delegation.

“As much as 15 000 people inNew York City are involved asvolunteers, in various communityoutreach projects. They are paid sti-pends, and act as civilian peace-of-ficers. Although they can’t make ar-rests theyworkwith thepolice inso-far as the ‘softer’ police work isconcerned. They undergo a 10-weekcourse at the police academy afterwhich they are deployed. A projectlike this won’t just take pressure offour Metro police but will also create

employment opportunities for hun-dreds of people,” said Brynard.

In other community projects theNYPD involves on a grand scale,churches, schools and parents

against social ills such as drugabuse. Peace officers are stationedat problem schools as a go-between,and even school children have a rollto play,” she says.

In winter they organise severalblanket and food drives, and overallthe projects breed much positivityin the city.

“What struck me as very excel-lent was the strength of the NYPD

brand. Their website is refreshedwith the latest news and informa-tiononadaily basis,”Brynard says.

Another NYPD project that coulddrastically improve safety in CapeTown, is the CCTV cameras in-stalled at all public housingschemes.

And is there anything they canlearn from us?

Yes, says Brynard, and refers tothe city’s 107 call centre.

“Comparing our call centre totheir 911 call centres, I would say,that we have better technology,”she said. But that’s where it ends.

As a whole it would however bequite impossible to compare themighty NYPD, with its 35 000-strong force (excluding the peace of-ficers) to Cape Town with its mere1 000 person force – this includesMetro, traffic, fire and rescue anddisaster management.

“But all things considered, we arerethinking all we have learned andhow it could help us to make CapeTown a better and safer city for allits citizens”.

“We will soon be gauging the pos-sibilities of getting a delegationfrom the NYPD to come to CapeTown for a few months to show usthe ropes,” she said.

From Tygerberg High Schoolhead boy, to centre stage.

Jaco Nothnagel will be perform-ing in Lie, a Rust Co-operative pro-duction at the Intimate Theatrefrom 29 May to 3 June.

After matriculating, Jaco headedto UCT where he obtained a degreein acting in 2009.

After studying, he worked as aproducer for Nicola Hanekom anddid work at Woordfees.

At the end of 2010, he found ahome as production manager at the

Fugard Theatre.“It was an unbelievable experi-

ence,” he says, adding that he learnta lot in his time there.

This year, Jaco has been helpinghis mom set up her restaurant inStellenbosch, Ella’s Bistro, beforehe got the invitation to join Lie.

“It’s not your commercial type ofproduction,” Jaco says, pointingout that it’s a bit more intellectualand thought-provoking than gener-al stage work.

Lie tells the story of a marriedman who falls in love with a rentboy he met in a pub and withoutthinking he hires a flat for him.

His wife finds out about the situa-tion and part of the story shows howhe deals with the fallout.

The production was written, de-signed by Philip Rademeyer andstars Stefan Erasmus and Danieyel-la Rodin along with Jaco.

Rust Co-operative will also belaunching Expectant on 23 May atthe Intimate Theatre.

It’s written and directed by Pene-lope Youngleson and stars RebeccaMakin-Taylor. It will run until 27May.

With Expectation, Jaco says theyare also catering to a more broad-minded audience. The production

tells the story of a woman consider-ing herself and her place in theworld.

After these productions, Jaco willbe heading to Canal Walk to be partof Fred Abrahamse’s Little Mer-maid.

“It’s good to be back on stage,”Jaco says.

Later this year he is going over-seas. Jaco will be travelling to Edin-burgh for the Fringe Festival,where he will be the executive as-sistant for a company from London.

Loukman and Emo Ad-ams released their DVD,Brother Love, at Grand-West’s Market Hall re-cently.

The free show drew anumber of expecting fansof all ages, who filled theMarket Hall to the brim.

With the help of TakeNote, the brothers per-formed a preview from theDVD that is filled with sto-ries about their child-hood.

Directed by Basil Appol-lis, the production fea-tures signature tunes like

“Gums Kawalie Wams”and “Waar is Jy Liefling”as well as new composi-tions.

The launch saw every-one from tiny tots to olderfolks laughing at thebrothers’ joking rivalry.

Rollins will be performing his new show,The Long March, at The Baxter Theatre onFriday.

He explains what fans can expect from theshow: “I will be on stage by myself, no screenor effects, just myself and a microphone.”

“I tell stories from travels I have done allover the world, including Africa, talk aboutthings that happened to me, what’s happen-ing in America. Basically, it’s a long op. ed.Piece.” Rollins says.

From punk band frontman to film and tel-evision star and prolific author, Rollins isa relentless one-man rollercoaster on a glo-bal track of current events.

South African audiences will recogniseRollins from his role in the television series,Sons of Anarchy. “ I act between tours to stayworking if the opportunity comes up,” he ex-plains, adding: “I don’t go after it all thatmuch, nor does it come after me all thatmuch.

“It’s interesting work but nothing I am allthat good at but it’s great to be able to be partof something as cool as Sons now and then.If more of that kind of work came my way,I would definitely consider it,” he says.

Rollins is also involved in many charityprojects and while he says that everythinghe is involved with is close to his heart, hepoints out: “Drop In The Bucket, a smallNGO in Los Angeles has been an organisa-tion I have been working with for some time.They work primarily in southern Sudan andUganda.

“They do great work and it’s fantastic tosee it up close.”

Through his role as frontman for the bandBlack Flag, his charity work and his motiva-tional talks,Rollins is aheroand inspirationto many young people.

Whenaskedwhathe thinks is themost im-portant lesson for young people across theworld, Rollins says: “That perhaps theyshare the world with a lot of other people,cultures andwaysof ‘goingabout it’ and thatnone of this is to be feared. Perhaps it is tobe embraced, explored, enjoyed, protectedand understood.”

He adds: “War should be seen as an exam-ple of their government in failure and theyshould seek to remedy that. Also, history isthere to be learned from and not always re-peated.”

It was an emotional graduationas three Kyokushin-kan stal-warts received their fourth danblack belts earlier this month atthe International Kyokushin-kan training camp.

Wayne Sylvester, Greg Page andUlrich Smith met Shihan HennieSmith as youngsters many yearsago.

“It was a very special moment forus. I’veknown these guys since theywere very young, and they stuck totheir guns and today I am veryproud of what they have achieved,”said Bosman.

Sylvester started karate back in1991 at the age of eight. Showing tre-mendous talent, he was sent to Ja-

pan in 1998 and 2007 for extensivetraining. He also represented WP innumerous national tournamentsand currently is a referee at all pro-vincial and national tournaments.

He is also a very successful in-structor.

Greg Page started at the age of 13in 1984. He has been an instructorfor the past 21 years and has taughtat Bellpark Primary, Welgemoedand Brackenfell.

“I have also been refereeing forthe past 15 years and also had theprivilege of centre refereeing atprovincial champs, the Len BarnesMemorial and the Champion ofChampions,” said Page.

Ulrich Smith met Bosman in 1989and immediately fell in love with

the sport. In 1994 he graduated tohis first dan black belt. He travelledto Japan in 2007 where he also re-ceived extensive training from topJapanese instructors. For morethan 10 years Smith has also ex-celled as a referee. He is also one ofBosman’s top instructors.

These three men have the highestregard for Bosman, arguably thebest in the business.

Shihan Ishizawa and Sensei Kimwho flew all the way from Japan toattend the grading at the camp,were highly impressed with thehigh standard and work ethics ofthe karateka. Zimbabwe, Congo,Zambia, Namibia and Uganda to-gether with seven local provincesattended the camp.

Sy het vanjaar die WP-kampioen-skap – junior en senior – gewen endaarna het die SA junior kampioen-skap voorgelê. Hier was sy deel vaneen van die beste hoogspringkom-petisies die afgelope aantal jare enhet sy ’n derde plek met ’n persoon-like beste van 1,75 m behaal. Dieeerste 3 atlete het almal gekwalifi-seer om dalk later in Mei vir die sui-delike streekspan in Zimbabwe tegaan deelneem. Sy het dit opgevolgen verbeter met ’n tweede plek ty-dens die Geelbladsye-interklub inPretoria met ’n puik 1,77 m.

Aangesien sy nie deur die WP op-geneem is in hul span na die Baainie, het sy as individuele inskry-wing aan die SA senior kampioen-kap in PE deelgeneem. Weer eenshet sy almal verbaas en in winderi-ge omstandighede ’n silwer medalje

losgespring met ’n hoogte van1,75 m.

Sy het intussen verneem sy is in-gesluit in die Suid-Afrikaanse jeug-span wat einde Mei aan die suideli-ke streek-kampioenskapsbyeen-koms in Harare gaan deelneem.

Alhoewel Mia nie een van dielangste hoogspringers in die land isnie, maak sy absoluut op daarvoormet haar benadering tot die sport,naamlik veerkrag en ongeloofliketemperament.

Having tested the waters of inter-national competitive jet skiinglast year, a local wave warrior isset on taking the title this timearound.

Sunningdale’s Jake Montandon(28) has been hitting the waveshard the last couple of months inpreparation for the IFWA Jet-waves 2012 World Championshipthat gets under way on 25 May.

Montandon took part in theNorth American and South Amer-ican legs of the tour in 2011 win-ning the amateur category andcoming third among the profes-sionals at the World Champion-ships in Brazil.

This year Montandon has sethis sights on the complete tourwhich include the first two stopsof the series in Sintra, Portugaland then Montalivet, France aswell.

“After competing in Portugal Iwill be doing a road trip with myBurn team mate Zack Bright fromthe USA to Montalivet. We are in-dividual competitors but becausewe have the same sponsor we trav-el together,” Montandon explains.

He especially hopes for a goodresult in France.

“The competition is from 1 to 3June. I better win that one be-cause it is my birthday on thethird,” he challenges himself witha smile.

He managed to get a sponsoredski overseas which saves on extraand very pricey transports costs.

“Overhaul has supplied mewith a ski and there is a goodchance I might get a full sponsor-ship from them. This can opendoors for me, as they can supplyme with a ski wherever I have totravel. The hull of the ski is differ-ent to the one I’m used to but fromwhat I hear it is good,” he says.

The flips, turns and stretchesthat characterise the sport meanmuch physical training especiallyin the upper body and it takes atoll on the body.

“I stretched the ligaments in myleft knee a month and a half ago.I was practising a back flip and no-sedived into a sandbank. Some-timesyougoabitwild andyou for-get that you are too close toshore,” he explains the error injudgement. “But it’s all right now,it’s not a 100 percent. Since thenI have been doing some rehab jog-ging on the beach and training asmuch as I can.”

Montandon says this timearound he is definitely better pre-pared for the competition thanlast year.

“I know what to expect and Iknow the riders. I have worked onsome new moves and my wave rid-ing is good.

“I feel confident to do well andshow them what SA is made of,”he says with a grin.
