    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

Music lovers, artists, friends and familywill

be paying their last respects to Cape Towns

    music legend Ricardo Groenewald this

    weekend.

Kuils River resident Ricardo, famous for

the 1980s hit song I love you, Daddy,

passed away more than a week ago after a

short battle with cancer. He will be laid to

    rest on Saturday, 5 December.

The funeral will take place at the Grace

Performing Arts Centre at 34 Brentford

    Road, BeaconValley, says family spokesper-

    son pastor Julian Claassen.

    Ricardos family are very emotional.

They have not had the time to be alone be-

cause of planning the funeral and with fami-

ly and friends visiting them. They are emo-

tional and trying hard to deal with it, says

    Julian.

The funeral on Saturday starts at 08:45.

Viewing will be held earlier at 07:00.

We will miss him and his phenomenal

voice. We will miss him for the person he

    was, and for his humbleness.

Cape Town mayor, Patricia de Lille, also

    extends her sincere condolences.

I am saddened to hear about the passing

of one of Cape Towns great sons of music

who shot to fame after his trademark hit I

love you, Daddy. Ricardos music enriched

the childhood memories of so many Capeto-

nians and others across our country. This is

indeed a great loss to themanywhose hearts

he crept into, says De Lille.

A memorial service will also be held on

Thursday night at the Grace Performing

    Arts Centre.

    strongpartnershipbetween thepolice,

the community police forum and resi-

dents of Kuils Rive, is required in or-

der to help combat crime in the area.

This is the opinion of Captain Isaac van

    Niekerk,KuilsRiver police spokesperson, at

the annual general meeting of the local com-

munity police forum (CPF) held on Monday

    night.

VanNiekerk explained that the number of

reservists at the station has declined over

the past few months, which can hinder the

fight against crime, and that a partnership

between the police and community is there-

    fore vital.

He suggested that a strong bond be built

between the police and local neighbourhood

    watch structures.

We have to form partnerships; we cannot

    fight crime on our own.

In total we have 356members in all of our

    neighbourhood watch structures across

    KuilsRiver andwehavemade goodprogress

in getting people from the communitys side

involved to help combat crime effectively,

    he said.

He added: Our reservists in total have de-

clined. For the month of April they worked

234 hours, in May 235, in June 200 hours, in

July 300 hours and in September 100 hours.

One must remember that all of those

    hours are voluntary, he said.

In his chairmans report, CPF chairman

Alton Payne said that it was important for

the community to be informed about the

CPF and its activities in order for people to

    get involved in this fight.

One of the ways of doing this, he ex-

    plained, is hosting community projects.

    Claude Julies, CPF project manager,

gave a brief outline of the different projects

undertaken during the course of this year.

Some of these included awareness cam-

paigns directed on gangs and gang vio-

    lence, he said.

We had some of these awareness cam-

paigns in sector 2 where there are regular

shootings. Meetings were held to help allevi-

ate the problem as well, he said.

Payne also touched on some anti-crime ini-

tiatives soon to be undertaken. This include

the installation of CCTV cameras across the

area and the other, a radio project.

As far as I know the aim of the radio

project is to have one single frequency for

Kuils River, but for each neighbourhood

watch to have its own channel. With regards

to the camera initiative, funding has been

made available for this by the City of Cape

    Town, he said.

Payne said an estimated amount of R300 000

has been set aside for the project, which will

    be launched in 2016.

    There are currently 14 neighbourhood

    watch structures in Kuils River.

    Partnership to help fight crime

The Kuils River Community Police Forum held their AGM this week at De Eike Kerk, Soneike. At

the meeting were members Winston Davids, John Lear, Alton Payne, Angela Frans, Wesley

Prinsloo, Yvonne Simpala, Johannes Pula, Claude Julies and Melanie Jacobs.

The Rhode family recently held their reun-

ion in Kuils River and 180 people attended.

    Organiser Euria Hendrickse says broth-

ers and sisters, aunts and uncles and neph-

ews and nieces attended the function which

was held on Saturday 14 November at the

    Kuils River caravan park.

The management at the park accommo-

dated all our activities that we initially

    planned to have.

Our family could reunite at a place that

was safe and neat for the first time in many

    years, Euria says.

She thanks the management at the local

    municipal offices inKuils Riverwho helped

    to make it possible.

Once again I wish to reiterate that it is

heartening to know that our municipality

still serves the community with care and

    consideration, she says.

    CapeTownpolice say they are investigating

the shooting of one of their own.

Alban Petersen, a police officer and awell

known gospel artist, was wounded on

Wednesday 25 November in Bishop Lavis.

    Captain Frederick van Wyk, provincial

    police spokesperson, says the circumstan-

ces surrounding an attemptedmurder is be-

ing investigated after the 48-year-old was

shot and wounded in Montana, Bishop La-

    vis at about 06:50.

Thepolice officerwasoff duty at the time

of the incident and dressed in police uni-

form when he was attacked by two armed

suspects who fled the scene without their

firearm. The motive for the attack is un-

    A

huge cloud of smoke billowing over

an area near Eerste River and Black-

heath left many people wondering as

to what the cause could be.

Curious people took to Facebook, upload-

ing photos of the dark cloud asking where

the fire clearly visible from Kuils River

and Belhar was and what caused it.

    Anyone knows whats burning, one

person wrote on the Kuils River Communi-

ty Page on Facebook on Friday.

Thankfully the fire along Van Riebeeck

Road (R102) was not a danger to anyone as

established during a visit to the site byTyg-

    erBurger.

A rubbish dump consisting of building

rubble, tyres, plastic andwood caught fire

on Friday just after 08:30. Firefighters from

the Mfuleni fire station were on the scene

by 09:00. It was unclear what the cause was,

however some allege that children in the ar-

ea predominantly farming area set the

    rubbish on fire.

Liezl Moodie, spokesperson of the City of

Cape Towns fire and rescue services, said

their service responded to the fire at 08:31.

    Resources were dispatched from the

Mfuleni, Khayelitsha and Belhar fire sta-

tions. Two fire engines and one water tank-

er with a total staff compliment of twelve

    responded, Moodie said.

The fire was extinguished by 09:23.

    No injuries were reported.

iKapa Cares runs tests for just R60

    A

    ffordable HIV counselling and testing

have been made available at iKapa

Cares outlets in the northern suburbs

in the wake of World Aids Day on 1 Decem-

    ber.

    The Western Cape Government Health

fell and Pick n Pay Plattekloof Pharmacy in

Plattekloof, is expanding its health service

offering to include HIV counselling and test-

ing (HCT), in addition to family planning.

This programme is an initiative between

the provincial government and private sec-

tor to ensure that the population of theWest-

ern Cape has increased access to services

and awareness in health care. The goal is to

avail necessary resources to our patient

pools to ensure better experiences in receiv-

ing vital health care tools, says the head

of the department, Dr Beth Engelbrecht.

HCT is an important service as it is a vital

part in encouraging people to know their sta-

tus. The private partners already render fam-

    ily planning andbaby immunisation services

on behalf of the department. The addition of

HCT is integral to ensuring accessibility and

education awareness so that people canknow

    their status, says Engelbrecht.

These iKapa Cares outlets have trained

nursing sisters who provide this confidential

service using quality supplies made availa-

ble by thedepartment. The testwill costR60.

Engelbrecht says this initiative seeks to

reach out to the ordinary person who can-

not afford private health care, but is not in

a position to take a day off work to access

    primary services.

The service launched on 1 December and

will be rolled out at 18 private partner sites

    throughout the Western Cape.

Memo handed to school hits hard

    RICHARD ROBERTS

    @richardjohn_rj

    O

ngoing violence and gang activity at

    the Eerste River Senior Secondary

School led to a memorandum being

    handedover to the schoolsmanagement last

    week.

Thememo, covering safety and security at

the school, was handed over to school princi-

pal Sydney Jantjies on Thursday morning

bymembers of the Eerste River Community

    Police Forum (CPF).

    Henry Beerwinkel, CPF subforum sector

4 vice chair, said the handover coincided

with the 16Days of activismagainst violence

    towards women and children.

One cannot ignore the increase in vio-

    lence in our schools.

We therefore ask that the school accepts

this memo in good spirit, as we are not here

to discredit the school but to help in building

it up, Beerwinkel said outside the schools

    main gate.

Jantjies, who signed a copy of the memo,

said that as a school theywill try and ensure

that a safe environment is maintained at

    school.

We will try and create a safe haven for

    the children, he said.

In thememo the CPF said they, alongwith

the police, parents and the community at

large are concerned and shocked at the cur-

rent conditions prevailing at the school

    which compromises effective education and

    learning.

Some of the issues they said that they note

with concern is that the school has become

unsafe for both learners and staff.

Illegal entry of unwanted elements onto

school grounds, intimidation and attacks on

learners and staff outside school and a lack

    of discipline and disruptive behaviour

among learners are also some of their con-

    cerns.

Another issue they are worried about are

gangs who recruit new members at the

    school.

Beerwinkel said not enough is being done

to guarantee the safety of leaners and staff

which is primarily the responsibility of the

    department of education, school manage-

ment committee and school governing body

    (SGB).

In conclusion he said the CPF recommend

the implementation of a 10-point plan thus

achieving a climate conducive for education

    and learning.

These ten points include that the school

adopts a policy of transparency, accepts re-

    sponsibility of maintaining discipline and

order, that the safety of learners and staff be-

come a priority and that an anti-tamper pe-

    rimeter fence be erected immediately.

Other points include that the SGB be-

comes a vehicle of transforming the school

to a community centre of excellence, imple-

    ment remedial and intervention programs

in transforming leaners to become responsi-

ble human beings, and that a representative

council of learners be developed and empow-

    ered through educational workshops.

handed over to him on Thursday morning by the vice chairman of the CPF subforum sector 4,

    erwag langer toue in voertuiglisensi-

    eringskantore in Desember as ge-

woonlik. Een van die redes hiervoor,

    s Ian Neilson, uitvoerende onderburge-

meester van Kaapstad, is dat motoriste se-

dert 1 November ook n bewys van hul

adres moet saamneem om hul lisensies te

    kanhernu.

nie hierdie kennisgewings ontvang nie, is

    n nasionale probleem, s Neilson.

    elektroniese administrasie-verkeersinlig-

re.

    munisipale rekening, n telefoonrekening,

of n kettingwinkelrekening in, solank dit

nie ouer as drie maande is nie.

Hierdie bewys is ook nodig by onder

meer aansoek om n bestuurslisensie of

    Youngboyshavebeenwarnednot to touch

or kiss a girl without her consent, as this

can be seen as sexual assault.

The request was made by an officer from

the polices family violence, child protec-

tion and sexual offences unit on Thursday

during a meeting celebrating 16 Days of ac-

    tivism.

Warrant Officer Koos van Wyk, remind-

ed boys of the harsh realities should they

commit such crimes and get caught.

The school holidays are coming up and

children especially boys often land in

trouble during this time, he said.

He saidwhen a child is involved in a rape

or sexual case, the culpritmust be taken in-

to custody within 12 hours after commit-

    ting the incident.

The unit has the right to arrest a child

    as young as 10 years.

Afterwards these children can be re-

    leased into preliminary care.

Children of 13 years can get detained for

up to 30 days if the investigation officer

feels that the child is a threat to his or her

    victim.

So, boys, please do not get into trouble.

Do not touch or kiss a girl without her per-

mission. The same applies to the girls. he

    said.

Please parents, be mindful of where

your children are and what they are doing

    I was absolutely delighted when

I received a phone call from one

Ingrid at Oude Libertas, to let

me know that I was one of the

lucky winners of a double ticket

    to the Kurt Darren concert,

which was held at the Oude

    Libertas Amphitheatre on

    Sunday 29 November.

I wanted to say a big thank

    you to TygerBurger and Oude

    Libertas for sponsoring this

    wonderful concert. It was the

first time that my husband and

I had visited this stunning open

air theatre, which is situated in

    such a spectacular setting. The

seating was great and the sound

really good as well, and we will

    definitely be attending further

    concerts at this venue.

We were so lucky that the

    weather was absolutely fantas-

tic maybe even a little bit on

the hot side. It is a concert that

we will not easily forget. It was

    very special, and together with

    the Christmas market which

was on at the same time, it

made us feel very much more

    in the festive mood.

    It was very special, and

asof n engel na ons gestuur

was toe ek en my man, albei

    pensioenarisse, langs die pad

    moeilikheid ondervind het met

    ons motor.

Hy het sy motor se battery

uitgehaal en op ons motor kom

toets. Jy kon sien dit is n man

wat n motor ken. Hy het na

alles gekyk en ges ons moet

stadig huis toe ry; hy sal ons

    volg tot by die huis.

Hy het gerel dat hulle die

    volgende oggend by ons huis

sal wees om die fout te herstel

en ook ges ons moenie bekom-

merd wees nie, want dit is nie

so n groot fout nie. Hy sal ons

help, anders gaan ons baie duur

    betaal vir die herstel daarvan.

Hy het presies geweet wat om

te doen. Ek sal hom aanbeveel

by enige persoon, want hy het

nie net my motor herstel nie,

maar ook nie n plaas se prys

    gevra nie. Baie dankie, Deon!

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Is daar iewers

    tingsbetalersgeld.

Wat die omgewing betref, verloor ons

land water met beurtwater ons voor-

land en verloor renosters steeds hul

horings en lewens teen n ongekende

tempo. Boonop verloor boere in droogte-

    geteisterde gebiede hul oeste.

    In die kommunikasie-omgewing verloor

dag- en Sondagkoerante hul lesers en

Afrikaans moet hard baklei om nie sy

status as hor onderrigtaal te verloor nie.

Met gemiddeld 49 mense wat per dag

in SA vermoor word, het die polisie

lankal sy greep op misdaad verloor.

Op sportterrein gaan dit nie veel beter

nie.

    horison?

    T

    he Western Province Blood

    Transfusion Service (WPBTS)

is looking for 2 750 heroes who

are willing to register as blood do-

nors as the December holiday rapid-

    ly approaches.

And the WPBTS is making it easy

and fun for those heroes to come for-

    ward with an interactive #KeepThe-

    BeatGoing campaign across Face-

    book and Twitter.

    This campaign invites South Afri-

cans to participate by enrolling as

    blood donors and then submitting

    short, creative videos on Twitter

and challenging friends to do the

    same.

    Potential donors are invited to

Sing it, strum it, bang it, hit it, hum

it or clap it, the campaign says, en-

    couraging people to submit selfie

video clips, stating that they are

keeping the beat going by register-

    ing as donors.

    Use the hashtags #KeepTheBeat-

Going and #WPBlood and be sure to

tag a friend who youd like to chal-

    lenge next, saysWPBTS spokesper-

    son Marlize van der Merwe.

Less than 1,5% of Western Cape

    residents are registered blood do-

nors and according to the WPBTS,

this number has to rise to 3,5% just

    to meet the December demand.

    Were inviting everyone to join

in. You dont need to be musical to

submit a clip, and if youre already

registered as a donor, thats great

too, as you can still help to raise

    awareness and challenge those

around you to enrol as donors in a

    fun and light-hearted way, says

    Van der Merwe.

    She says this campaign reflects

    the real-time donor enrolment

progress and potential lives saved in

    a central dashboard.

The beat videos will be show-

    cased on the campaign website,

    where those in theWesternCape can

    also enrol as donors.

    WPBTS needs a minimum of 2 750

donors by January 2016 to meet the

    donor base goals.

    ie rieldanskompetisie vier

    vanjaar sy tiende bestaans-

    jaar.

Toe die eerste stofwolke op Sa-

    terdag 9Desember 2006 bydie amfi-

    teater op die Paarlberg opgeskop

word, het baie min mense van die

    unieke dansvorm geweet. Die ge-

leentheid om n half vergete en

    grootliks miskende kultuuruiting

    aan kultuurhonger gemeenskap

bekend te stel, is met albei hande

    aangegryp deur die sewe deelne-

mende groepe. Vir baie was dit die

kans op die terugwin van identi-

teit,n gevoel van eiewaarde en die

    hervestiging van n selftrots, s

Elias P. Nel, projekleier by die

Brandvlei. Na afloop van die eerste

    kompetisie het sy die projekorga-

niseerder omhels en in haar unie-

    ke Oranjerivierafrikaans vreugde-

    vol uitgeroep: My tjeent, vinaand

het jy virmyvirrie eerste tjeer soos

    n mens gelat voel!

    Die ATKV-Rieldanskompetisie

    wasveral vir verafgele platteland-

se gemeenskappe n reddingsboei, iets om

die ledigheid onder jongmense wat dikwels

tot kriminele aktiwiteite gelei het, teen te

werk.

s Nel.

    verdere hupstoot gegee.

Sedert 2008 was die riel skielik in aan-

vraag by feeste soos die KKNK op Oudts-

    hoorn, die Cederbergfees (Clanwilliam), die

    Snoek en Patatfees (Goedverwacht), Han-

    tamVleisfees (Calvinia),Vryfees (Bloemfon-

    tein), Huisgenoot Skouspel, Diazfees (Mos-

    selbaai), Kirkwood Wildsfees asook talle

    landbouskoue en gemeenskapsfunksies. So

word hul ervaringswreld verbreed en hul

    lewensuitkyk word positief benvloed. Die

    voorheen skugter, soms identiteit-

loses en miskende dansers was ewe

    skielik gesogte kunstenaars. Dit op-

sigself het n enorme bydrae gele-

wer tot die selfwaarde en trots van

    die rieldansers. Die aanvraagna op-

    tredes neem daagliks toe. Leier-

skap, wat deur die ATKV aange-

    moedig enwaarvoor daar ook oplei-

    dingsessies aangebied word, bring

mee dat leiers al groter begin dink

en doen. n Sprekende voorbeeld is

Floris Smith, die leier van die Die

    NuweGraskoueTrappers vanWup-

perthal.

deelgeneem. Dit het gelei tot die ge-

leentheid om in 2015 aan n interna-

    sionale kultuurkompetisie in Los

    Angeles te gaan deelneem. Hier

dans die Graskoue Trappers 13 me-

daljes los vir hulself, maar ook vir

die ATKV en Suid-Afrika. Seker die

belangrikste van al die medaljes is

die goue medalje vir die internasio-

    nale tradisionele volksdans!

    volgens Nel.

    Die tiende ATKV-Rieldans-eindstryd vind

op Saterdag, 5 Desember by die Liqui-Fruit-

    amfiteater in die Paarl plaas.
