Fathers Day my wish

for you is that you will

take timeout of yourbusy schedule

to spend time with your family.

Have you taken your children on

any adventures lately?

This is the wish a local man sent

to president Jacob Zuma ahead of

FathersDay lastweek, in a desper-

ate plea to change current legisla-

tion around paternity leave.

He goes on to ask the president:

What are your fondest memories

of your children? I havent been

privileged to take Dant and Juan-

dr on a real adventure like camp-

ing or fishing yet, but we make the

visits to the paediatrician and oth-

er health care practitioners an ad-

venture for all of us.

Hendri Terblanche (39) of Brack-

enfell made headlines last year

when he publicly challenged the

current legislation, which allows

fathers only three days paid family

responsibility leave when their ba-

by is born.

In terms of the Constitution, he

submitted a petition to the Nation-

al Council on 3 July 2014, asking

that working men be given 10 days

paternity leave.

He appeared before the Select

Committee on Petitions and ap-

proached every member of Parlia-

ment to urge them to draft a new

Bill to this affect.

Constitutional provision

In November 2013, Terblanches

wife Giselle gave birth to twins,

born three months prematurely.

Three days paternity leave is

not enough for parents who opt for

Caesarean section or in the event

of other medical complications,

he says. At the time, his twins

spent 139 and 79 days respectively

in hospital.

However, only a handful ofMem-

bers of Parliament actually replied

and therefore the issue was never

addressed in the National Assem-

bly by means of members state-

ments, as provided for in the Con-

stitution.

The purpose of the above proce-

dure is to bring important public

issues to the attention ofministers.

Since then I have on numerous

occasions asked the secretary of

the Select Committee on Petitions

and Executive Undertakings when

the committee will make the rec-

ommendation, but until today I

still havent received any confir-

mation, he said.

In his plea to Zuma he asked the

president to intervene and help fa-

thers to claim back their role as

primary caregivers.

The law in its current format

changes a fathers role from a pri-

mary caregiver to a secondary

caregiver with only three days

family responsibility leave availa-

ble to fathers ina 12monthperiod.

Terblanche says the law needs to

be changed.

He also urged the Presidency to

investigate failure of the select

committee on petitions in fulfilling

itsmandate by finalising petitions.

se taak om dit uit te voer nie. Dit moet so

gedoen word dat geen leerder minder werd

voel as n ander nie.

Die ongeluk het op Jeugdag op Dinsdag

16 Junie in Van Riebeeck-weg plaasgevind.

Nathan Willemse (18), sy vriendin, Emel-

da Pietersen (in haar twintigs), en haar drie

jaar oue babadogter, Emelda jr., is in die on-

geluk oorlede.

Dis nog onduidelikwat presies tot die bot-

sing tussen die twee motors gelei het, s

kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, Kuilsrivier-poli-

siewoordvoerder, wat die betrokke aand op

die toneel was.

Flitsende ligte van nooddienste, inslui-

tende die polisie, ER24, SA paramediese

dienste, sowel as EMS-ambulansdienste en

die brandweer, het kort voor 20:00 die straat

verlig. Met hul aankomswas laasgenoemde

slagoffers egter reeds oorlede.

die M12 geroof het.

Die Caltex Fresh Stop-vulstasie in Stel-

lendale is verlede Maandag 15 Junie om

decision by the City of Cape Town

council on 2 June to shift thedelegation

for decisions about traffic calming to

Transport for Cape Town (TCT),

could be reconsidered.

Gerhard Fourie said in his cha-

irpersons report at the monthly

meeting of Subcouncil 7 (Koe-

berg) lastMonday that the delega-

tion to consider and approve traf-

fic calmingmeasures will in futu-

re resort with TCT.

We are awaiting the admini-

strative protocol in terms of

which applications those on the

waiting lists and new ones will

be dealt with in future, he said.

Fourie toldTygerBurger subcouncil mana-

gers will meet this week to discuss the way

forward.

In the past, traffic calming was a delegati-

on of the subcouncil. The ward councillor,

who serves the community, follo-

wed a process with the ward com-

mittee, after which a recommen-

dation was made in terms of the

traffic calming policy, he said.

We want residents to take part

in public participation and for us

to be able to oversee the process of

traffic calming, he said.

The new draft traffic calming

policy will soon be circulated for

public input, he said. In terms of

this new draft policy, traffic cal-

ming is only recommended near facilities

such as schools, public open spaces, shop-

ping centres and retirement homes.

Diewendyhuise is totaal vernietig.Net

die swartbedekte buitemure van die

steenhuise staan nog. Dis egter onbe-

woonbaar.

Die besittings van die huiseienaars,

Georgina Louw en haar suster, Louisa,

is ook vernietig.

Volgens brandweerdienste is altesame

13 mense dakloos gelaat.

Vandeesweek is daar egter na die ge-

sinne omgesien. Klere, komberse en kos

is aan almal geskenk danksy n gemeen-

skap wat omgee. Die skenkings is gedryf

deur Caswell Julies, plaaslike Park Vil-

lage-inwoner en vriend van die slagof-

fers.

Ons het klere wat geskenk is, oorhan-

dig aan die slagoffers wat al hul besit-

tings verloor het.

Die oorhandiging was eintlik baie

emosioneel, s hy op sy Facebook-blad.

Memorial decided for Buttskop ten

memorial for the ten victims of the

Buttskop Level Crossing accident in

Blackheath five years ago is said to be

erected soon.

The memorial for the ten will be erected

at the Welmoed Cemetery along the R102

near the Penhill Estate.

The children who lost their lives in Au-

gust 2010 when a minibus-taxi transporting

them collidedwith a trainwere Reece Smith

(7), Michaela de Koker (11), Nolan February

(13), Jody Phillips (13), Cody Erasmus (15),

Nadine Marthinisen (16), Jean-Pierre Wille-

man (13), Jason Pedro (14), Jade Adams (10),

and Lisle Augis (11). Their memory will now

live on at the cemetery where most of them

were laid to rest.

Ward 14 councillor Bert van Dalen said to

commemorate the death of the children, sub-

council 21 budgetedR140 000 to be contributed

by the four wards within the subcouncil area

wards whom all lost children. The money,

he said, will be paid out of ward allocation

funds.

Suitable position

We as ward 14 thank the wards 11, 17 and

19 for contributing funds.

After intensive negotiations with all the

relevant parents and also in light of the clos-

ing of the level crossing and the construction

of a bridge that will change the scenery, a

monument will be erected on a suitable

place in the cemetery.

Most of the childrenwere buried inWel-

moed Cemetery, he said.

The manner of the monument was also

agreed on by the parents and this project

will be started in the next financial year

starting on 1 July, said van Dalen.

Further information will be available

once the tender process has been allocated,

he said.

Earlier this year it was announced that

the rail giantMetrorail and Passenger Rail

Agency of South Africa (Prasa), along with

the Western Cape government, were plan-

ning to build a road over rail bridge at Butt-

skop Road. This forms part of their Level

Crossing Elimination Programme.

Enforcement tightened

This project is at theplanning stage at the

moment and will start as soon as funds are

made available.

In themeantime, lawenforcementwill be

tightened via the cameras that were in-

stalled until the bridge is finished, van Da-

len said.

Sets ofwreathsnear the accident sceneare

currently the only reminder of the horrific

incident on took place that fateful day inAu-

gust.

Riana Scott, spokesperson for Metrorail,

said the Western Cape has the highest num-

ber of public level crossings, a total of 40

within its rail network.

Kleinvlei police have issued a warning

to residents about an increase in car-hi-

jackings occurring in the area.

So said police spokesperson Warrant

Officer Annacletta Mothoalo.

She said it came to the attention of the

police after several cases of hijackings in

Kleinvlei and Eerste River were repor-

ted at the police station.

There are a large number of these ca-

ses occurring in our area, warned Mo-

thoalo.

She went on to say the suspects like to

target people at night when they open

their gates or their garages.

The suspects apparently approach the

victims fully armed and they point the

firearms towards the victims.

It seems as if the same people could be

involved in some of the hijackings after

peoplewhohavebeen targeteddescribed

four armed men.

We suspect they belong to one

group, Mothoalo said.

She added: Wewant people to be alert

when they drive their vehicles. Learn to

use surveillance techniques such as

checking who is following you home,

Mothoalo said.

their way to school or home have be-

come the latest targets of robbers, the

police say.

Kleinvlei police spokesperson Warrant

Officer Annacletta Mothoalo said street

robberies have been on the increase and

school children are being targeted more of-

ten.

The police nowwant to inform parents of

childrenwalking to or from school, to ensu-

re they do not walk alone.

Rather walk in groups, Mothoalo plea-

ded.

Some children like to walk with their

earphones on and listen to music. This is

dangerous because it gives criminals the

opportunity to grab their cellphones and

run away with them, Mothoalo said.

She said in most cases it is difficult for

the victims to identify the suspect.

Police encourage children to be alertwhi-

le walking to school. It is winter and we

all know that in the morning its still very

dark outside. Children should walk in

groups, that way criminals will not take ad-

vantage of them and try rob them.

Parents of small children are also encou-

raged to drop them at school and collect

them.

Eerste River learners

targeted by thieves

Kleinvlei police are investigating a bur-

glary case following a break-in at a den-

tists business premises.

Thieves made off with several valua-

ble items stolen at the practice inGordon

Street, EersteRiver lastweek, police say.

The incident occurred on Monday eve-

ning 15 June.

Kleinvlei police spokesperson War-

rant officer Annacletta Mothoalo said

computers and television flat screens

were stolen. The items are worth about

R50 000.

The complainant, who works at the

dentist as a clerk, locked the place in the

evening after work and discovered that

it had been broken into the following

morning, police say.

Mothoalo said the thieves gained en-

trance through a broken window.

No arrests have yet been made.

ker, het aan TygerBurger vertel dat die pad

vir byna 40 jaar lank probleme gegee het.

Ons is egter baie bly noudat die pro-

bleem uitgesorteer is, s sy.

Gemsbokstraat het in wintermaande ge-

reeld oorstroom. Die stormwaterpype sou

oorstroomwat veroorsaakhet dat diewater

tot in die erwe en gevolglik tot in die huise

stroom. Die pad is oor drie dae, tussen

Woensdag 10 Junie en Saterdag 13 Junie,

deur die Stad Kaapstad se departement

Transport for Cape Town (TCT) opgegra-

deer. Die dreine in die gebied is ook herstel.

Dit het onlangsmet die swaar renweer

hier oorstroom. Die water het tot reg agter

gebring.

Wat die hospitaal self betref,

was dit altyd skoon en netjies.

Dit is snaaks dat Yolandi nie

verwys na die verpleegpersoneel

nie vir die res stem ek 100%

saam met haar.

never stopped getting them.

However, there is one sure way

of stopping them from doing

anything to your computer, if

you have one. After the person

usually female says shes

calling from Microsoft and

theres something wrong with

your computer, just say somet-

hing along the lines that you

dont own a computer. Thats

what we say in our house when

we get one of those calls. Trust

me, the person will put the

phone down in your ear when

you say that, because they cant

continue with the scam unless

you agree that you have a

computer and/or a problem.

So, problem solved. And I bet

if enough people did that,

theyd stop the scam altogether,

because it would stop produ-

cing results!

Persons (SAARP) social club is the place

The group is having their next

or many children born with special

needs the journey to an independent

adult life is an uphill battle. With stag-

gering statistics on the end result of children

bornwithFoetalAlcohol SpectrumDisorder

(FASD), a child protection organisation has

revealed their vision for a new home in Mil-

nerton.

Home of Hope in Table View was founded

in 2005 and cares for childrenwho have been

abandoned, abused, raped, neglected, born

withFASDor infectedwithHIV. The organi-

sation cares for children in cluster foster

homes and is now working hard to make

their dream of having a family home in Mil-

nerton a reality.

They recently acquired a property in Mil-

nerton which formerly housed an old age

home and chief executive Eleanor Brook

says its 18 rooms provides enough space for

the organisation. She saysmore than 80% of

the children in the organisations care suffer

from FASD, making their needs unique.

Brook says according to statistics, between

600 000 and 700 000 children are born with

the disorder each year and more than 80%

of them end up in the social services cycle,

unable to progress.

AtHomeofHope, each child gets a fighting

chance to be the best they can be. Cared for

by caregivers and social workers, the chil-

dren are given a structured lifestyle which

helps them cope and progress.

Brook says they have been running clus-

ter homes for three years and now plan to

run a child youth care centre in Milnerton.

The difference with this home, is children

will be permanent residents and the centre

will not be accessible to the public. Brook ex-

plains that because many of the children

have been abandoned, they have been in the

organisations care since they were babies

and no parents or family visit the home.

Social worker Bianca Breytenbach says

with a focus on special needs, the organisa-

tion aims to create a family home which ca-

ters to the needs of children. We are trying

to find the balance between strict routines

with the need for a family home.

In addition, Brook says children have

grown up with their caregivers and one

homewould not only further aid their devel-

opment by ensuring their bond with their

caregiver remains, but provide the opportu-

nity for caregivers to support each other.

With the new home, siblings will no longer

have to be split.

For the caregivers, this is not just a job,

this is their passion. Looking after children

with special needs is very different and this

homewill enable them to support each other

and assist them with debriefing, she says.

Breytenbach says with the new home, the

organisation hopes to restore what has been

lost.

Home of Hope has embarked on a fund-

raising drive to raise R1.2m to pay off the

property. In addition they will be undertak-

ing restorationworkaimedat improving the

home.

Home gives kids a chance

The newKleinvlei Fitness Hub is invi-

ting locals to join them and in so doing

maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Club chairperson Johanna Steen-

kamp said the community-based club

meets at the community centre in

Kleinvlei, Eerste River.

Our goal is to promote health and

fitness in a community where unem-

ployment, crime, drugs and gangste-

rism are rife.

Our aim is to reach out to families,

starting with the women in our area,

Johanna said.

There are currently between 20 to 30

women in the club.

The numbers differ from time to ti-

me as some women find employment

and leave the club, however newmem-

bers join on a regular basis.

Nearly 99% of the women at the

club are unemployed and use the club

as an escape from their daily difficul-

ties and struggles they face, Johanna

explained.

The club is currently planning a

Back-to-School dance which will be

held on Friday 26 June. The event will

be held to raise funds.

Sakhile Humbanes perseverance

has resulted in him receiving a bursary

from a radio station earlier this year in re-

ward for his talent.

Now he and fellow musician Jose Dias

will soon be performing in Welgemoed at

the local primary school hall.

The duo will present their talents at the

concert on Sunday 28 July at 16:00 and ad-

Sakhile is a particularly promising flu-

Galway, as well as Pierre-Yves Artaut,

Betsy said Sakhile had recently appeared

as principal flute and principal, piccolo in

the South African National Youth Orches-

tra. He also appearedwith the Stellenbosch

International Chamber Music Symphonic

tra, she said.

He has been an awardwinner at theArt-

scape national youth music competition

andwas awarded first prize and third prize

respectively in the Fine Music Radio burs-

Die kunstenaar het al op uitnodiging in

meer as 19 lande uitgestal, waaronder Bel-

gi, Suid-Korea, Itali, Finland, Swede,

VSA en Frankryk.

Die uitstalling Sculpting the Earth is

die eerste solo-uitstalling wat by di nuwe

galery, Whow Studios, aangebied word.

Die galery is gele in Ixiastraat 2 op die

hoek van Protea- en Ixiastraat, Durbanvil-

le.

kies-projek wat deur haar en n vrien-

TannieElna verduidelik: Ons leer n

groep van 25 vroue van Blikkiesdorp

naby Delft om te brei. Ons is n hele

groep wat hieraan saamwerk.

Die groep maak onder meer mussies,

slaapsokkies en truie, maar komberse

geniet nou voorrang.

Kombersprojek

My vriendin Sandra het hierdie kom-

bersprojek begin nadat sy gehoor het dat

daar verlede jaar mense dood is van die

koue in die blikhuise daar.

Dit raak vreeslik koud in daardie

strukture, s tannie Elna.

Nou leer ons die vroue om die komber-

se te brei.

Sy swanneer hulle Vrydae naBlikkies-

dorp vertrek, neem hulle al wat beskikba-

re wol is saam.

Tans werk hulle aan n klomp komberse

vir Mandeladag.

Die vroue kan elk die eerste kombers

wathulle brei, vir eie gebruikhou.Die ver-

dere komberse gaan dan aan behoeftige

mense wat hulle identifiseer.

Die oorhandiging word opMandeladag

in die saal van die Horskool Linden in

Delft gedoen, s sy.
