Despite repeated eviction, a group ofMfuleni residents are determined tomove onto a vacant piece of land in

Fountain Village.The group of about 150 people still gathe-

red in the bush on the private property loca-ted on Great Circle Road, Fountain Village,this week. The group have been congrega-ting at the same spot for nearly a week inan attempt to permanently erect wood and

iron structures.The Mfuleni residents, most of whom are

backyard dwellers, told TygerBurger theycurrently have to pay rent where they stayand they are dependent on social securitygrants. They are therefore seeking cheaperalternatives. The group first attempted mo-ving to Blackheath, but were met with hosti-lity. They are now trying to relocate to Foun-tain Village.

The City of Cape Town’s law enforcementagency and Metro Police, along with theMfuleni police, kept a watchful eye on the

piece of land since the Mfuleni residentstried to move onto it about two weeks ago.

Growing tensionLast week tensions grew and several of the

backyard dwellers resorted to violence. Ty-res were set alight in Rotterdam Road onThursday night and this past weekend, whi-le traffic lights in Hindle Road were also da-maged, said community leader and Foun-tain Village resident Maurette Dolman.

The entire road, according to Dolman, wasblocked.

She said no one was injured during the un-rest.

“Only one motorist’s vehicle was damagedwhen the people started hurling stones to-wards the police,” Dolman said.

A security guard’s vehicle had human fae-ces from a portable toilet thrown on it.

Joseph Adams, spokesperson for the Mfu-leni Community Crime Forum, said thisweek that the forum was aware of the situati-on, but could not confirm whether anyonehad been arrested.

Planned moveShe said over 2 000 people are planning on

moving onto the land.“We are still here.”She said they had gone to the Mfuleni poli-

ce station to opena case against property ow-ner, MSP Development.

“We were informed, however, that we can-not open a case because MSP had already

opened a case against us, that we are occupy-ing their land without their permission,”Thuliswa said.

“The illegal land invaders will have a de-trimental effect on the value of the land andsurrounding properties, and also pose as amajor security threat,” said Sarah Bateman,spokesperson for MSP Development.

Land earmarked“Since the incident we have been in con-

stant communication with the local council-lor, security firms, local law enforcement,the police and attorneys to control and pre-vent the land invasion.”

Bateman said the illegal occupation willalso delay a project that is earmarked for anaffordable rental housing project.

The vacant land can allow for the con-struction of a total of 592 houses and 431apartments totalling 1 023 units to be develo-ped, said Bateman.

The relocation of the Lwandle residents toBlackheath is inhumane.

This was the comment made this week ata subcouncil meeting by ward councillorWilma Brady.

Brady was instrumental in the attempt tostop the relocationof about 800Lwandle resi-dents to an open piece of land located alongAlbert Philander Road in Blackheath.

The families were controversially evictedfrom Sanral property in Nomzamo, Strand.

At the meeting last week Wednesday, Bra-dy expressed her gratitude towards the poli-ce, as well as to the City of Cape Town’s lawenforcement agency and Metro Police fortheir assistance during the week long un-

Dalen was requested by mayor Patricia deLille to assist during this period.

“If you are not involved in the humanityside, it is hard to understand the situationin Blackeath and Strand. Those families we-re used as a political toy,” Brady said.

Brady said in Blackheath about 20 taxisstopped at the spot where the wood and ironstructures were to be erected.

“The people were carted there like ani-mals, like goats to the area. That is inhuma-ne,” Brady said.

She said the councillors and mayor had tobear the brunt.

“I hope the families involved are well.“There were mothers with children invol-

vedwhen they came toBlackheath.Thatwas

inhumane.She said many other squatters took advan-

tage of the situation.“Others piggy-backed on the situation.

They took advantage of it but they camefrom Happy Valley and some from Mfuleni,people with ANC t-shirts, some with DA andEFF and Ses’Khona t-shirts.

“We picked up that there’s a trend of abu-se. These were people not in need of houses.”

Brady said some of the people were invol-ved to destabilise the community, to spreadfear among community members.

Answering chairperson Steven Vuba, Bra-dy said they did not see the problem coming.“But when it happens leave your political af-filiation in the boardroom and help the peo-ple.

“They need is moral support,” Brady said.

wendig uit ’n brandende buitegebou te kom.Die brand by die gebou – voorheen ’n mo-

torhuis wat in ’n kamer en kombuis omskepis – het so byna die lewens van di e hele ge-sin van Venusstraat, Kuilsrivier geëis.

Die voorval het op Donderdag 12 Junie ge-beur.

“Hulle was almal nog in die bed. Ons al-mal het nog geslaap,” het Johanna Februa-ry (59), ouma, aan TygerBurger vertel.

Haar dogter, Candice, en haar vier kin-ders woon al byna twee jaar in die buiteka-mer, wat agter Johanna se huis geleë is.

“My ander dogter se kind in ons huis hetbegin hoes. Sy het opgestaan om vir haarkind water te tap. Toe ruik sy iets brand.

“Sy het by die venster uitgekyk en opge-merk die plek brand. Ons kon niks doen nie.Ek was bekommerd oor die kinders,” hetJohanna vertel.

Johanna het haar man, Christopher, asdie held in die verhaal beskryf.

“Sy arms is erg gebrand, want hy moesmet ’n byl die garage se deur oopkap omCandice en die kinders uit te kry.” Die burelangsaan het ook gehelp om die gesin te red.

IntussenhetCandicedienatkombers oorhaarself en die vier kinders gegooi. “Hullewas binne die huis vasgekeer. My dogterhet gesê sy kan nie meer nie,” het Johannavertel.

Haar dogter, Candice, se rug en hand hetgebrand. Die vier kinders is ongedeerd,maar is vir waarneming na die hospitaal ge-neem.

Die agterste deel van Johanna se huis,waar die kombuis en ’n kamer geleë is, is

ook erg beskadig. Behalwe dié skade het ’nwendyhuis langs die buitegebou waarin dieFebruary-egpaar se seun. Ryner, woon, ookin die slag gebly.

Ryner was volgens Johanna gelukkig niedie betrokke aand tuis nie. Sy wendyhuis,waarin sy televisie, bed, rusbank, kas entwee gasstofies was, het totaal en al uitge-brand. “Hy het alles verloor. Dis ’n wonder-werk die gasstowe het nie ontplof nie,” hetJohanna gesê.

Die brand het in sy wendyhuis ontstaanen na die buitegebou versprei.

Agter die erf het die oorblyfsels nog verle-deweekoral rondgelê.Al die gesin sekosba-re besittings is deur die vlammehel beska-

dig. As, rommel, papiere, stukkies hout enbedvere was verlede week nog duidelik sig-baar.

Christopher, wat in sy vrye tyd diefwe-ring en hekke vervaardig, het al sy gereed-skap en masjinerie verloor. Die oorsaakvan die brand is nog onbekend.

“Ons kan nie sê wat dit veroorsaak hetnie. Die forensiese span het gesê hulle gaannog uitkom en toetse doen,” het Johanna ge-sê.

Dawn Roode, stigter van die gemeen-skapsorganisasie, Dawn Cares, het ’n be-roep op die gemeenskap gedoen om die ge-sin te ondersteun deur klere, toiletware enkos aan die gesin te skenk.

Drankmisbruik kan lei tot onaan-vaarbare gedrag soos roekelose ofgeweldadige gedrag. Drankmisbruik iseerder ’n gewoonte as ’n siekte.

Dan kry ons die episodies-oormatigedrankgebruiker wat alkohol in so ’nmate gebruik dat hy die aanvaarbaresosiale norme oorskry en dikwelsbeheer verloor en dan drink totdat hybesope is. Apostel Henry Gertse (49), leier van dieMiracle Action Crusade Ministries, het gesêhy het die tuin langs die kunsgrasveld beginbou in ’n poging om die omgewing skoon tehou en ander aan te moedig om iets soortge-lyk te doen.

Gertse word deur van die gebied se kin-ders gehelp.

“Veral tydens die skoolvakansie help diekleingoed en tieners my,” het hy gesê.

Die versierings in die tuin – bome, plante,rotse, stene en buitebande – is alles items

wat hy langs die pad optel. “Dis goed watmense dump, dan kom sit ek dit hier.”

Gertse tel die meeste van sy items langsBobsweg in Eersterivier op.

Gertse is al meer as ’n jaar lank besig.Gevra oor die rede waarom hy die tuin

nog gereeld opknap, het Gertse geant-woord: “Ek het gesien hoe die vullis hiervir 14 jaar rondlê. Ek het dit begin skoon-maak en sedertdien maak die mense ditnie meer vuil nie.

“Die tuin dra by tot die netheid van diegemeenskap. As ’n gebied vuil is, is daarsommer outomaties meer misdaad. Ek wildie mense aanmoedig om eerder die gebiedskoon te hou.”

Die tuin is geleë langs die kunsgrasveldop die hoek van Southdene- en Theescom-bestraat. “Die vullis wat hier was, het onsopgetel, ’n gat gegrawe en dit daarin ge-

gooi. Dis baie harde werk; gelukkig is daarwater langs die sportveld wat ek kan gebruikom die tuin mee nat te spuit.”

Gertse het aan die begin eers die stene gelê,toe het hy die grond geskuif en dit gelyk ge-maak.

Sy vrou Olivia help ook soms.Gertse het tot dusver ook tamaties en pam-

poene geplant.“Ek is lief vir tuinmaak. As die plek so lyk

kan die atmosfeer in Wesbank dalk veran-der,” het Gertse gesê.

A young couple never expected theirromance would capture global mediaattention.

George Erasmus (21) and girlfriend Ash-ley Kracht (26), originally from Kansas Cityin America, were catapulted into the lime-light last Monday when George enlisted fel-low passengers’ help to propose to Ashleyat a Kansas airport last Monday.

George currently lives in Brackenfell andAshley lives in Durbanville. They were vi-siting Ashley’s parents in the USA.

The big moment occured when Georgelanded at Kansas International Airport. Hehad asked fellow passengers to each handAshley a daisy as they walked through thearrivals hall.

George was last to disembark and propo-sed to Ashley, who was by then standingwith an armful of flowers.

The proposal was captured by a Kansastelevision crew and made headlines on theinternet and in South Africa.

But Ashley says they never expected allthe publicity.

“It is unbelievable. The airline had toldGeorge that there might be a local cameracrew there to cover it, but he didn’t set anyof that up himself and we definitely didn’texpect anything like the response we’ve re-ceived,” she told TygerBurger.

Ashley says George is a true romantic,constantly leaving surprises in her bag, “orlittle notes slid under the door of my housein the morning reminding me he loves me”.

She had no idea he was going to proposeat the airport.

“I was just so excited for him to join usin America.”

Her parents knew though.“George had been in communication and

doing some planning with them. They alllove George, so they were very excited.”

George says he decided in January that

he wanted to marry Ashley.“I knew that I wanted to ask her in the

USA, since we will be getting married inSA,” said Geroge.

He says their families’ reaction was of“shock, excitement and joy”. “But I thinkwe are more shocked than them about howbig it has gotten. The huge response and allthe media stuff is still a bit unreal.”

George’s mom, Alet, lives in Eversdalwith dad Merwe and says George has al-ways been adventurous.

George and Ashley met at the JabulaniAfrica Ministries in Hout Bay.

George is studying to be a paramedic andAshley says she’s going to work with a mi-nistry to start up a Child Care Center in SirLowry’s Pass village.

The couple plan to marry in January.

Most people don’t need to seek medical ad-vice. However, you should see your GP or chi-ropodist for advice if you have severe or re-curring chilblains, or if they don’t improvewithin a few weeks. You should also seek me-dical advice if you think your skin may havebecome infected.

If you are susceptible to chilblains, you canreduce your risk by limiting your exposureto the cold, looking after your feet and takingsteps to improve your circulation.

A number of self-help measures can help,including: wearing warm clothes and ensu-ring your home is well heated; keeping active;stopping smoking; avoiding tight-fittingshoes and boots.

Botox has become the short-hand term fornon-surgical anti-ageing interventions.

Botox (botulinim toxin), used for cosmeticand medical interventions, is a purified anddiluted form of the clostridium botulinumbacteria. Its beauty lies in its ability to relaxmuscle that has been injected.

Botox blocks nerve receptors that innervatethe muscle. This stops the muscle from recei-ving signals to contract, which means theoverlying skin smooths and wrinkles can’tdeepen.

However, while it is cheaper than a surgicalfacelift, follow-ups are needed every fewmonths, as the effect wears off. The durationof the effect of Botox depends on factors suchas muscle mass and size, skin thickness, ethni-city and gender.

Do we need more policing tostop traffic violations? No, wemust correct it ourselves: stopwhere and when you must stop,it is the correct thing forlaw-abiding citizens to do.

But if transgressors cannotabide by the rule of law, the“broken windows policy” ofNYPD fame must be implement-ed to curb urban disorder andanti-social behaviour. It is herewhere AARTO’s point deduc-tion system and the new heavytraffic fines must be felt to thefull extent of the law.

What is most worryingly ispassengers allowing the driverto commit transgressions –allowing it and believing it tobe the norm.

“Death penalty is a violent act”is a very disturbing response toa letter (TygerBurger, 18 June)

Based on the response, Icould only assume Koert Meyerhas not experienced the loss ofa loved one through crime.

This country is rife with suchproblems, clearly without asuccessful deterrent. I guesseating human hearts, hackingpeople to death, raping youngchildren, setting them alight orremoving their intestines iswithin some peoples’ comfortzones, but not within mine.

I wonder if you have anychildren? Drugs are the orderof the day, as is house break-in,armed robbery and the brutalkillings of our doctors, farmersand loved ones.

The potential murderers yourefer to are the ones whoabolish the laws which wouldterminate these ruthless killers,leaving the innocent vulnerableand defenceless. It’s only amatter of time before you too,become a victim unless youhave turned your house intoFort Knox.

If you really have suchsympathy for those killers, youcan foot their bills while theyawait parole. I’ll rather pay mytaxes towards the innocent andneedy homeless people.

A graduation ceremony at the GeneLouw Traffic College in Brackenfell onFridaynight, saw34new local traffic offi-cials ready to take on the challenge onprovincial roads.

The Minister of Transport and PublicWorks, Donald Grant, was the keynotespeaker at the event.

Sanele Nyoka, a spokesperson fromthe ministry, said the graduates weretrained according to the requirements ofthe safety and security sector educationand training authority, local govern-ment sector education and training aut-hority as well as Road Traffic Manage-ment Corporation (RTMC) guidelines asto how to examine vehicles and licences.

Other skills acquired include firearmcompetency training, driver training, in-cluding articulated motor vehicle andmotor cycle training, as well as first aidand fire fighting.

“Besides their traffic diplomas, thegraduates also received their traffic pea-ce officer registrations,” he added.

Grant paid tribute to the managementand staff of the college for their dedicati-on and efforts to continually raise the

bar.“Since its opening, this college has

consistently improved on its service de-livery to the traffic fraternity at large.The effort of the management and staffover the years has established the repu-tation of this traffic training college inSouth Africa and across its borders. Thiswas recently acknowledged by the RoadTraffic Management Corporation at itsawards ceremony where our college andstaff competed with the nine other trafficand municipal colleges and was recogni-sed in all the five categories as the lea-ding traffic training institution in ourcountry,” Grant said.

“Other than receiving your traffic di-ploma tonight, you will also receive yourregistration as Traffic Officers and Pea-ce Officers as well as your appointmentcards to practise the duties of a TrafficOfficer.

“It is evident that thediligentworkhaspaid dividends and the time has come foryou to report to your respective trafficcentres and apply all of the training youreceived with honour and pride as a traf-fic official,” he concluded.

With the tax return filing date looming clo-ser, countless taxpayers have fallen victim toan elaborate scam.

Promising a believable windfall, it is by nomeans only the ignorant who have fallen forit.

Unsuspecting tax payers receive an emailfrom “SARS eFiling Alert”, informing themthat they have received a tax credit paymentinto their bank accounts by Sars E-filing.

This amount could range from anythingfrom R2000 to R8000, making it in range of theaverage annual tax return payout.

The person is then prompted to click on alink in order to “confirm online epayment”,and it is on this link where the victim is very

cleverly deceived to give out their bankingdetails.

Once this is done, the scammers are equip-ped with the necessary information to stealfunds from your account at any time.

The South African Revenue Service (Sars)is aware of this scam and is currently investi-gating it.

They warn tax payers to be extra vigilant.“Many tax payers have already been scam-

med and countless others have called to en-quire about this email,” says a spokespersonat Sars who warns tax payers not to respondto this email.

“The particular email address does not be-long to us and Sars will never prompt anyo-ne, even E-filers, to provide banking details.If a payment is to be made by us, we will auto-matically deposit it into your bank account.”

“It’s definitely for the love of it,” saysIlse Els, manager of the organisationthat daily opens its door and cupbo-

ards to empower those less fortunate.She and 15 others - of whom 10 are employ-

ed fulltime and six are permanent volun-teers - practice their “calling” from a big oldhouse in Bellville.

At the offices of the Metro EvangelicalServices, or MES, the team’s main purposeis to “teach people to fish”.

One of these projects is their GROW jobrehabilitation project which aspires to“make the unemployable employable”, saysIlse.

“You see, God uses us all. There are nonemore or less important than the other. The-re are none more or less useful. There is aplace for us all,” she says.

MES Cape Town originated from the Bell-ville Care Mission in 1999. From 2006 to 2008the Mission’s focus shifted from solely be-ing a church for street people, to holistic re-habilitation and MES Cape Town was esta-blished when the two organisations mergedin November 2008.

Sustainable solutionsMES’s key aim countrywide is to provide

sustainable solutions to poverty in CapeTown, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth andKempton Park, Ilse says.

The office in Cape Town provides accessto services to the homeless and vulnerablecommunity of the northern suburbs.

Key focus areas include poverty alleviati-on and community enrichment, skills trai-ning and enterprise development, and soci-al services.

These three core business units offer ser-vices such as spiritual guidance to those in

need in shelters and on the streets, and soci-al relief in the form of soup kitchens and ou-treaches to the street community.

They also provide a safe place to stay forclients on MES programmes for the durati-on of their intervention, and skills trainingfor people between 18 and 35 who possessa measure of vocational skills in order tohelp them find work and earn an income.

Transparency and integrityIlse says they employ trained clients in

various jobs and create more job opportuni-ties. Then there’s their development planfor each client, to help them reunite withtheir family, or rehabilitate.

“All this is done through support withcompassion, love and care,” Ilse says.

The philosophy underpinning their ope-ration is Christian discipline with respectand fairness, accountability with strongand clear roles, and sound financial proce-dures with transparency and integrity.

Ilse says MES in 2012/2013 served 8 823meals, provided clothing to 732 people, as-sisted 278 people to compile CVs, and 806clients were assisted through the GROWprogramme.

Besides offering financial support, orga-nisations and their staff can get involved ina project through participating in outrea-ches such as on Mandela Day, corporate ser-vice days, weekend outreaches, by cyclingthe PicknPay Argus Tour or participatingin MES’s Dirtopia mountain bike event.

“MES is 27-years-old this year and has de-cided to launch a sustainability trust wheredonors have the opportunity to give the or-ganisation a special gift – such as shares, le-gacies or finances that will guarantee ourfuture,” Ilse says.

MES is also BBBEE compliant and an 18Atax certificate can be issued for donationsmade.

Hy herhaal dié proses so seskeer, en heg dan die lae soos laslappies aan-mekaar, maar met kleefband. Dan is dit nogso drie stappe van omvou en vasplak, enminder as vyf minute later – voor jy kan sê“slaapsak” – is hy klaar.

Ilse sê hulle laat die slaapsakke in dievoorportaal van hul kantore. “Enigiemandis welkom, en kan daarvan neem soveel aswat hulle nodig het.” Sy sê afhangend vanhoe daar na die sakke, wat van herwonnemateriaal gemaak word, gekyk word, kandit so lank as ’n paar maande hou. Maar dithet ook sy nadele.

The “laughing face” of Suzy, lying snugly inher brand new, cosy kennel, speaks volumesfor her happiness.

Suzy is one of several dogs in Fisantekraalthat have benefited from the FisantekraalAnimal Welfare’s 2014 kennel project.

A total of 79 kennels, of which 16 were usedkennels, have been donated to the FAW’sKennel Drive. In this project people cansponsor a kennel for a dog in need for onlyR250 per kennel.

“To many of us, having our dogs and catssleep inside is the norm. Not only is it a com-fort because we love them, but they are bet-ter able to protect us, plus – most important-ly – they’re family members!

“Even if dogs sleep outside, we make surethey have sturdy, comfortable kennels andample shelter.

“However, in Fisantekraal and similarareas, dogs sleeping outside is the norm.Dogs without shelter – rain or shine – is also,sadly, pretty standard,” said Jane Payne, co-ordinator of the kennel project.

“Each weekend we continue to place thesekennels within the township and informalsettlement, ensuring that priority is given tothose animals where shelter is most limi-ted,” she said.

“As we drive around Fisantekraal, we arestarting to see a lot of FAW kennels and itreally reminds us that this project is makinga big difference,” she said.

Another dog, Wollie, was so unused to ha-ving his own home he was scared to enterhis new kennel. A volunteer, who asked tobe anonymous, had to go inside with him toshow him it is safe.

“I think he couldn’t believe it was for himto go into. He still runs after our van whenhe sees us and we always stop to give hima cookie,” Payne said.

For R250, people can offer shelter and com-fort to a township dog (or cat) this winter.

The ReMax Property Centre Durbanvillealso recently launched a new fundraisingcampaign to raise R10 000 to buy a solar wa-ter heating system for FAW so they can havehot water for the cleaning and bathing of theanimals.

Currently they are operating from a con-tainer with no electricity or hot water.

All the agents in Durbanville have agreedto donate a certain percentage of their com-mission and the administration staff havealso given willingly towards this project.

Singer Petra Mans wears her invincibleheart on her sleeve.

The bubbly, down to earth, twenty-four-year-old’s music career received a ma-jor boost after winning last year’s Makingof a Star competition, with her song, “Myinvincible heart”.

Since winning the competition’s originalcategory, Petra has gone on to record thesongandamusicvideo for it, but there’smo-re to come from her soon.

Petra got her first taste of singing inschool when her grandmother convinced te-achers to use her in a school production shewas too shy to audition for herself.

Once her teachers realised she had a goodvoice, they encouraged her to take singinglessons, and she’s been using her voice eversince. “It was love at first note,” she says.

Breaking throughPetra interprets “My invincible heart”,

written by her brother Hèrjo Schoeman, asa song about finding your voice and yourown strength, which is the story she tellsin the music video for the song.

“The music video is about struggling andbreaking through your struggles and em-bracing them,” she explains. “It’s about co-ming out bigger, better and stronger. It’ssaying: ‘you will survive this’.”

Her management team are in the processof contacting television channels, but fornow the video is available on YouTube.

Petra came across the entry form and pri-ze information for the Making of a Star com-petition and, being no stranger to competiti-ons, she decided: “I have to do it”.

“If it wasn’t for Making of a Star Iwouldn’t have had my own music video ora complete professional photo shoot,” shesays. Another highlight from the competiti-on was all the new people she met and conti-nues to meet.

Her single has been picked up by stationslike RSG, MFM and FeelGood FM, but Pe-tra’s next release will be an Afrikaans song.

“As Musiek Groen Was”, written by JJBrits, will be released within the nextmonth. “He’s a great friend of mine and afantastic writer,” Petra says.

The two have about 12 other songs they’vewritten together which they hope to releaseover the course of the next year.

Control and composureWhen she isn’t singing alone, Petra also

sings with the Canticum Novum choir,which is a slight adjustment for her. Sin-ging with the choir has taught her controland composure.

“You can’t just let loose and sing,” she jo-kes.

She has recently started working with theStellenbosch School of Rock and sings withtheir band. Also in the pipeline is an appea-rance on GoMusic.mobi, a new mobile sitethat streams live performances.

Petra has a few performances at festivalslike the Biltong Festival and Winter Won-derland lined up, but fans can keep an eyeon her Facebook page to stay up to date withher shows.

Proteas pluck ThistlesThe SPAR Proteas wielded the white-

wash brush to good effect as they wontheir third Test against Scotland’s

Thistles 46-33 at the Bellville Velodrome inCape Town on Saturday afternoon.

With earlier 56-29 and 41-25 wins from thefirst two Tests under their belts, the Proteaswill be off to next month’s CommonwealthGames loaded with confidence.

Despite the 3-0 series defeat, the Thistlesimproved with every outing and gave theProteas a great opportunity to work on are-as of their game that needed attention.

Despite winning all three tests, the Prote-as started off nervously, trailing 1-2 after on-ly three minutes of play.

This seemed to work as a wake-up call forthe Proteas, who increased their focus andin the space of six minutes halted the Thist-les’ charge by running up a 7-4 lead to raptu-rous applause from fans.

As play moved towards the end of the firstquarter, the frenetic playing patterns gaveway to a more cautious approach on bothsides. A two-minute time-out midway throughthis quarter after an injury to Thistles cap-tain Lesley MacDonald gave the coaches achance for animated pep talks, the teamsupped the tempo when play resumed.

This made for exciting play, with the sco-reboard seesawing as the ferocious action,

littered with turn-overs ahead of the halftimebreak saw the Proteas regain a slender 20-19lead.

This second-quarter display by the Thistleswas possibly their best quarter performanceand although they surrendered the lead, theystill outscored their higher world-ranked op-ponents by 10 goals to 9.

The Proteas were far more assured and con-fident under the post when play resumed. Itwas great reward for vastly improved inter-passing which caused the Thistles to lose theirmarkers and the Proteas steadily pulled awayby applying unrelenting pressure.
