Friday, January 29, 2010
Greetings:
It is with distinguished honor and great pleasure that I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Theta Omicron Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.’s “2nd Annual Kocktails & Kufflinks Ball.” While the annual Kappa Ball is indeed a longstanding tradition here at Theta Omicron, this year’s ball does in fact mark just the second installment of our “Kocktails & Kufflinks” series. Aside from the obvious alliteration conveniences that the name provides, “Kocktails & Kufflinks” also represents the unmatched level of sophistication and elegance that the Theta Omicron chapter hopes to provide to all of our ball attendees this evening.
This year has been quite the ride for Theta Omicron. Already we have enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with other NPHC organizations on our campus via our “Kappa InKlusion Week,” as well as give back to campus through various programs, community service, and our “Kappa Kares Week.” This past December we were also fortunate enough to welcome four strong new brothers, who were “KUT 4 PerfekTiOn”, into our fraternal bond. Today, in fact, marks the culmination of our official Kappa Week for the school year entitled: “T.O.tal Khaos.” However, even outside of our immediate successes the chapter has made great strides in terms of preparing for the future and ensuring the longevity of Theta Omicron. Our efforts towards branding our chapter under the moniker of “UNC NUPES” have been successfully met, as we have effectively entered the realm of social media via Facebook, Blogging, Twitter, and YouTube. And yet, needless to say, NONE of the aforementioned would be possible without the continued support of you: our friends, family, and community. For this, we are ever thankful.
Furthermore, as you look around you will notice that much thought and effort have gone into preparing for tonight. You will hopefully notice the great decorations and high quality of the food that you are currently consuming. Please do not believe for one moment that any of this would have been possible without the consistent patronage of our financial sponsors. Our financial sponsors have truly gone the extra mile in helping us make tonight’s event a reality, and to them we are truly indebted and would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you.”
In closing, I would like to encourage you all to relax, soak in the environment, make new friends, and help us in celebrating the conclusion of our highly successful “T.O.tal Khaos” Kappa Week and our 2nd Annual Kocktails and Kufflinks Ball!
Thank you all once more for attending! All the best,

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded on the campus of Indiana University on January 5,
1911. Originally chartered and incorporated Kappa Alpha Nu on April 15, 1911, the name was
officially changed to Kappa Alpha Psi on April 15, 1915. The Fraternity is predominately African
American with the fundamental purpose of achievement. Kappa Alpha Psi seeks to train its
membership, particularly undergraduates, for leadership roles in their respective communities
and the attainment of a high degree of excellence in their academic pursuits.
Early in this century, African-American students were actively dissuaded from attending college.
Formidable obstacles were erected to prevent the few who were enrolled from assimilating
into co-curricular campus life. This ostracism characterized Indiana University in 1911, causing
Elder W. Diggs, Byron K. Armstrong, and eight other black students to form Kappa Alpha Psi
which remains the only Greek Letter Organization with its Alpha Chapter (first chapter) on the
University’s campus. The founders sought a formula that would immediately raise the sights of
black collegians stimulating them to reach accomplishments higher than they had imagined.
With achievement as its purpose, Kappa Alpha Psi began uniting college men of culture,
patriotism, and honor in a bond of fraternity. Subsequently, chapters spread in succession to
the University of Illinois, the University of Iowa, and Wilberforce University campuses. By 1919,
the Kappa Alpha Psi experience had generated serious interest among black college degree
holders to form Alumni Chapters.
As graduate chapters multiplied , the Fraternity began to expand its programming, for example,
“Guide Right,” its national social out-reach (mentoring) program was started three years after
the first Alumni Chapters were formed. Today National Guide Right Programs provide
programming, role models, and mentors for at-risk youth and other youth in communities
throughout the country and internationally.
Even though Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. is the only NPHC fraternity to have never extended
an honorary membership to any individual, regardless of rank in society The Fraternity has still
attracted a number of distinguished Americans. In the political realm, these include several
mayors, governors, and congressmen, most notably: Thomas Bradley, W. Wilson Goode, Bernie
Thompson, Michael White, and Johnny Ford. Brothers achieve in all forms of human endeavor
and business and law are no exception. Notable brothers here include: Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr,
Robert Johnson, Reginald F. Lewis, Bert Collins, and Theta Omicrons very own Kwame Jackson.
Civic and Entertainment leaders include: Tavis Smiley, Harry Bellefonte, John Singleton, Cedric
the Entertainer, Montell Jordan, Bishop Eddie L. Long, and Dr. Rev. Ralph Albernathy. In the
athletics arena Arthur Ashe, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell, Anfernee Hardaway, and Allan
Houston are also noteworthy fraternal members.

The History of Theta Omicron
The Beginning
On May 8, 1976, at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Theta Omicron
Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was chartered by eight men seeking an organization striving
towards achievement. These eight men, from diverse backgrounds, united to form a chapter that has
grown and prospered over its first 34 years.
Prior to the chartering of the chapter, twelve men were initiated under the guidance of the Alpha Kappa
Chapter of North Carolina Central University in 1973 to form a colony. Thurston Frazier, Reynauld
Williams, Raymond McAllister, Charles D. Watts, Perry Hodge, Gregory Reed, Winfred Falls, and
Sidney H. Evans were all members of the Spring 1973 pledge class. These twelve men operated as an
independent colony at UNC-Chapel Hill for their first year as a moratorium existed for new fraternities.
Thurston Frazier served as Polemarch during this time of transition. After proving Kappa Alpha Psi’s
dedication to improvement of life, the Theta Omicron Chapter was established in April of 1976 being the
205th chapter in the fraternity. Gordon T. Cureton, Dewey M. Clayton, Barry S. Stanback, Spencer A.
Wynne, and Desoto Wilson, known as the Spirit of ’76, were the first pledges initiated under the Theta
Omicron Chapter in December of 1976.
Over the years, approximately 180 individuals have been initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi through the
Theta Omicron Chapter. Among these brothers were several Morehead Scholars, Pogue Scholars,
Chancellor Scholars, Teaching Fellow Scholars, and other scholarship holders. Since initiation, numerous
brothers have gone on to prominent careers in medicine, law, and business.

Guidance
Several distinguished brothers have served as chapter advisor, including the most illustrious Laurel
Wreath recipient Howard C. Barnhill, Hayben Renwick C.N. “Pap” Parrish, Elbert Avery, Dr. Arhcie Ervin,
and Anthony Walters have also served as chapter advisors.
Theta Omicron Influence
During the early years of the chapter, Theta Omicron was instrumental in the establishment of the Iota
Xi Chapter at Duke University, Mu Iota Chapter at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and
the Kappa Xi Chapter at North Carolina State University in 1980.
Awards and Recognition
Through the years, the Theta Omicron Chapter has been very active in the Middle Eastern Province. The
Chapter has produced seven Junior Vice Polemarchs, three provincial Strategus, and one Lt. Strategus,
and seven executive board members. The Theta Omicron Chapter has also produced eight
Undergraduate Kappa Man of the Year awards, five of which were won consecutively from 1993-1997;
past Polemarch Daryl Porter II is the most recent recipient of the award in 2009. In 1987, 1992, 1995,
1996, 1998, 2000, 2004, and 2009, the Theta Omicron Chapter was named Undergraduate Chapter of
the Year in the Province.
In 1990 the chapter was named a “Super Builder” for the new International Headquarters of Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. At the 20th Grand Conclave in Orlando, Florida, Brothers Kenneth Pugh and
Kevin Davis were awarded the Guy Levis Grant Award and the Bryon Kenneth Armstrong Award
respectively. This marked the first time in the history of the fraternity that two members of the same
chapter received the two highest undergraduate awards in the same year.
