Meet Jennifer Bauer YOUR NEXT HONOR could be your college. The Honors College is more than smaller classes with bigger opportunities. It’s a learning community within a residence hall. Working one-on-one with faculty mentors, students are given freedom to lead projects that they’ve developed. They get to experience William Paterson in an entirely new setting. As a student in the Honors College, Jennifer also took part in the honors learning community. “I was able to bridge the gap between my academic and social lives,” says Jennifer. “Members are always lounging in the ‘pod,’ watching a movie like Crash or The Motorcycle Diaries, and later discussing the implications and context with a professor who stops by. The experience really blurs the line between learning and living—making both even better.”

Jennifer is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau, one of William Paterson’s 25 sororities and fraternities. “It’s been equal parts demanding and rewarding,” says Jennifer. “It demands that I live out the values I’ve adopted, that I become a better person, and that I balance my academic goals with a healthy social life. But the rewards are immeasurable. I have a whole new awareness of the people around me—where I stand with them, and who I can count on to stand with me for the rest of my life.”

MULGREW MILLER, associate professor and director of the University’s internationally renowned jazz studies program, is one of the world’s most influential jazz pianists, featured on more than 400 recordings. He has toured and recorded with such jazz legends as Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, drummer Tony Williams, and the Mercer Ellington Orchestra, as well as leading his own trio and the sextet Wingspan. He maintains a balance between his weekly teaching and world touring, records best-selling jazz CDs, and shares his talent and the piano bench with the next generation of jazz innovators. When reps from the corporation met Joshua, they just had to make him an offer. He accepted. And now his internship lets him build on his two strengths: managing finance and sales. “I originally wanted to get a degree in finance,” says Joshua. “So this internship is tailor-made.”

“My job isn’t just to sell things. It’s to build relationships. My goal isn’t to become a salesman—it’s to become a trusted advisor,” says Joshua.

YOUR NEXT COMMUTE could be to a whole new world. Not everyone lives on campus. And that’s okay. “A lot of people think that as a commuter, you don’t get the rich campus experience and you don’t interact as much,” says Lindsay. “But it’s just not true. I have the freedom to participate as much as I want. It’s all here. There’s always something going on and I find that most of my friends who commute are like me—they don’t want to just come to class and leave right away. They join clubs, hang out, and study in the University Commons for a few hours.”

Part of the secondary-education requirement is 20 hours of classroom observation. “It’s called the real world,” says Lindsay. “And we get to experience it before we graduate. During my observation, I saw make-or-break moments where I learned what it takes to be a great teacher. For me, it just confirmed that I’m definitely in the right major. And the preparation I received at William Paterson confirmed that I am in the right place.”

As a graduate of the Paterson public schools, Lindsay is a Paterson Teachers for Tomorrow scholar (PT4T), which means she is committed to teaching in the city of Paterson for at least three years after college graduation. “Many kids where I’m from don’t think college is for them,” she says. “They don’t realize that they have what it takes to be a double major in education and math. Then I show up—and get them to think again.”

YOUR NEXT “PATIENT” might teach you something. The Nel Bolger, R.N. Nursing Laboratory is equipped with the latest in simulated lab technology. Opened in 2008, the Bolger lab recreates scenarios that play out in actual ICUs every day. The lab features observation areas, computerized patient-simulation mannequins, and a control station that makes everything come to life. It’s also outfitted with robotic digital cameras and editing facilities for producing DVD “resumés” that students can show to potential employers.

YOUR NEXT ROLE could be the lead. Our communication department is among the best in the state university system. Our students have access to fully equipped, state-of-the-art television and radio studios. Kamilah worked at our TV station, WPBN, on the current-events discussion show, Open Minds. She worked in and out of the control room, from operating the teleprompter to being the writer and producer.

YOUR NEXT INTERNSHIP could be on the air. Kamilah landed an internship at Air America Radio, announcing the traffic and weather every Saturday night during Rachel Maddow’s show. William Paterson students intern at a wide range of media outlets, taking advantage of our proximity to New York City, the media capital of the world.

YOUR NEXT MOVE could lead to a whole bunch of great opportunities. Kamilah transferred from a community college in Philadelphia. She came to William Paterson after following her passion and hearing some solid recommendations. The process was smooth. Once she got here, she jumped from jazz to film studies. That set her up for a position as a casting assistant for Transformers 2, several enviable internships, and eventually a job offer as a full-time events planner for celeb gatherings. And as one of the approximately 1,200 transfer students who enter the University each year, the only move she’s ever regretted after living on campus for two years was the move out.

YOUR NEXT MOUNTAIN-TOP MOMENT might happen on the fourth floor. Kamilah lived in High Mountain West, one of two residence halls that opened in 2006 to create a modern, inspiring “learning community”—and a 24/7 campus experience. All suites have everything you’d expect, which can be bittersweet. “Of course, I eventually had to move on,” Kamilah recalls. “But I’m crying because I loved it so much.”

YOUR NEXT MENTOR could be Diana Peck, professor of communication. “I’ve been with the University for 35 years,” says Professor Peck. “I’ve seen it grow up. It’s broadened its mission and community outreach. I see the same kind of momentum in the students. Every year they get more sophisticated, more driven. Kamilah is a great example. She’s a real self-starter. I helped coordinate one of her internships and I’ve been in her corner ever since.”
