Term 1: Week 07A

Dear Parents,

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) is responsible for Australia’s national reporting program, including MySchool. The MySchool website is updated annually with the previous year’s Naplan results and other enhancements. I am delighted to announce I have received notification from ACARA that Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School is one of the schools across the nation to demonstrate substantially above average gain in student achievement.

This is significant as it represents the progress made from Year 3 to 5, from Year 5 to 7, and Year 7 to 9. It tracks the actual gains that the students achieved and to be amongst the schools in the nation with substantially above average gain in achievement is reward for the hard work of our students, the commitment of our staff to continuous improvement and the support of our parent community for our teaching and learning initiatives.

Next term, our Head of Secondary School Mrs Noelene Wright will be taking some well-deserved long service leave. Last week Mr Rob Tobias, Principal of Emmanuel Anglican College in Ballina assisted me to interview staff for the position. I am delighted to announce that Mrs Charlotte Lush will be the Acting Head of Secondary School during Mrs Wright’s absence and will be available to support staff, students and families. Please give Mrs Lush your full support throughout Term 2.

Today, our students participated in the National Action Against Bullying supporting the ‘Bullying No Way’ initiative. Students were encouraged to wear an orange accessory as a trigger to think more seriously about the change in behaviour required to prevent bullying in our school and community. On Assembly, I spoke to the students about activity equaling action. Confidence and Capabilities

As part of our commitment to supporting optimal development for our students, we are excited to announce our second presentation in our Lindisfarne Parenting Series that will be held next week.

Dr Judith Locke is an international researcher, counsellor and the bestselling author of ‘The Bonsai Child’. This Seminar is aimed at equipping parents at all stages of schooling (Kindergarten to Year 12) to assist and coach children to build confidence and capabilities at school.

Tuesday 18 April 1.00pm - 5.00pmWednesday 19 April 9.00am - 1.00pmThursday 20 April 9.00am - 1.00pm

Worship and reflection time in Chapel recently has focused on the idea of “going beyond the mind you have” in order to continually improve in our decision making and our character development.

It is not an easy path to walk, and it requires setting ourselves some dedicated time to think about how we are feeling, and how we are responding to the world around us.

What follows below is an excerpt from a daily Lenten study guide called “Into the Desert” that has been published by the Anglican Board of Mission. If anyone is interested in exploring reflections like the one below more frequently, there is an app available through ABM – www.abmission.org/apps

This reflection is based on the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6: 7-15.

The Lord’s Prayer is so familiar to us that its most marked quality can pass us by. It is an extremely un-self-centred prayer. We don’t get to ask for our own stuff until half way through and even then, it seems that it is left up to God to decide what we need.

A lot of our praying could be summed up as ‘Dear God, may my will be done. Amen.’ As if we are a CEO and prayer is a daily performance review to hold God, the slightly reluctant employee, accountable against the KPIs we have put in place.

However, this prayer bears the imprint of Jesus’ desert temptations. We ask for God’s will to be done, not ours.We ask God for daily bread instead of providing it ourselves. It is God’s name that is hallowed, not ours.It is God’s kingdom that matters, not our own.

Our main role is not telling God how to run our life. We are sent out with the much harder task of forgiving those who have hurt us.

Blessings and peace this Lent.Rev Chad

It is a common belief that wisdom only comes with age, however, we think it is possible to help children to live with wisdom well before they become old and grey! This week at our Kindergarten to Year 4 Assembly, the students were introduced to their super power of wisdom. With the help of Year 4A Super Heroes, the children learnt how to use their ever-increasing knowledge of what is good and right to make the best possible choices in life. Ms Carley O’Connell expanded on this by explaining how to use our wisdom in order to foster good friendships and eliminate bullying. She reminded us all of the need to ‘Stop’, ‘Breathe’ and ‘Think’ before we act. Staff and students were invited to wear an orange accessory on Friday to support the National Day against Bullying and Violence.

Chicken Hatching @ Preschool

Last week, Henny Penny Hatching delivered an incubator and some eggs to Preschool. The children watched eagerly as each day some eggs started to crack. Some

of the children were lucky enough to see a chicken emerge slowly from the egg. They observed how the chicks stayed in the incubator until they were fluffy and then move over into the viewing tray. The children commented about their size, colour, sound, and counted how many chicks had hatched each day. The children were also able to hold the chicks and learnt how to wait for their turn and use gentle hands. Some of the chicks are going off to new homes and the remainder will head back to the Henny Penny Farm.

Japanese News Last week our generous Lindisfarne families opened their hearts and their homes to 10 international exchange students and two staff members from our sister school in Japan, Nabari Seihō.

Our school became a cultural learning playground as their week was filled with all things Australian including a great Aussie cook-up and lunch at our Trade Skills Centre, as well as boomerang making in manual arts classes kindly provided by Ms Leistra and Mr Wright.

The students were also integrated into their host families classes during the week and took English classes as part of their curricular studies.

At the Senior Assembly, two standout Nabari sudents were awarded with applause and praise after giving individual presentations about their experiences in Australia and their plans to return in the future.

On their final day here at Lindisfarne, the students gave a number of unique cultural presentations on Japan as a thank you for us sharing our culture with them. We truly hope all our Nabari guests had a joyous and rewarding time with us at Lindisfarne, and wish them the very best for a safe trip home.

Bond Accelerator Course

Lindisfarne is proud to announce the inaugural Bond Accelerator Course. The course will involve 12 students from Years 9 to 12 working through this entrepreneur program from Bond University. The course will take place every Wednesday afternoon 3.30pm-5.30pm during Term 2. The program is not subject specific and is open to all students who have a commercial or social business idea.

What is the Bond Business Accelerator program?

The Bond Business Accelerator (BBA) is the ultimate incubator for early stage start-ups, combining the essential ingredients of formal training, practical skills, high level mentoring and investor introductions that will transform your idea into a fully-fledged commercial entity. The opportunity to launch a new business in the global marketplace has never been more within reach. In a world where technology knows no borders, a business concept born and bred on the Gold Coast, could find lucrative markets anywhere in the world.

Donated Drum Kit

We would like to thank Cooper Nichols (Year 5) for kindly donating his smaller drum kit to the Sunshine Avenue campus. On Monday Kindergarten and Year 1 were excited to discover a ‘new’ drum kit in the Music Room. They had lots of fun taking turns keeping the beat and discovering how ‘cool’ playing the drums can be!

Choir and String Orchestra

A reminder that Choir is every Monday in the Music Room at 1.15pm until 2.00pm and String Orchestra is every Friday from 8.00am until 9.00am. Students involved in both the Choir and String Orchestra are to be congratulated on their commitment to weekly rehearsals and their open mindedness to learning new skills.

Beauty and the Beast

On Wednesday, Stage 2 was treated to a special performance by the ALPHA Show team. Beauty and the Beast was a delightful incursion which emulated the fun of live musical theatre. Students in 4A commented:

“The performance was phenomenal. There was lighting, dressing up and music. I couldn’t believe my eyes. There were messages in the story and they included don’t judge people and control your anger,” said Phoenix Lacey.

“It was amazing and the costumes were fantastic! There were numerous characters such as Belle, the Beast and Gaston. There were also great messages, lots of them in fact, like don’t lose your temper, don’t judge yourself and it’s the inside of you that matters,” Rachel Robbie.

“We went up to the high school to watch The Beauty and the Beast ALPHA Show. It was amazing. A couple of the people were two characters but the main characters were just one. My favourite part was when Belle went to Beast’s house. The messages included be yourself, don’t judge yourself and be kind to others,” Ava Taylor.

Coding and Chess in the Curriculum

Lindisfarne is delighted to inform the school community about our two new initiatives in the Primary School, Coding in the Curriculum for Years 2 and 4 and Chess in the Curriculum in Year 3. These wonderful programs come at no cost to parents and will take place on Tuesdays in Terms 2 and 3 this year. Lindisfarne realises and embraces the opportunity to ensure our generation of young people are exposed to computer coding. They need more than just being taught how to use the internet, various apps and programming packages, they need the deep understanding of how information technology works which comes from a grasp of coding. We are delighted to work with ScopeIT who are coming with two staff to train the students in coding.

This Easter, we are hosting a very special school holiday program called Code Camp where your child can build their very own iPhone or Android app! We trialled this last year and it was a resounding success. Code Camp has already taught more than 10,000 students in Australia in Years 2 to 8, teaching them important skills such as computational thinking, logic, creativity, user experience, app development and game building in a fun and engaging way. We will be hosting two camps, one is a beginner class and the other is a more advanced camp.

Spark (Years 2 to 8): Fun, engaging and challenging… and is our most well-known Code Camp which more than 10,000 students have completed. Code Camp Spark is where every student in Years 2 to 6 should start their Code Camp journey.

Ignite (Years 2 to 6): Completed Spark or our previously named ‘Beginners’ course? Next stop is Code Camp Ignite! Returning students will build on their skills and create new apps with increasingly complex logic, more code, behaviours and problem solving.

Enrol today and help your child become a coding superstar! Click the links below for FAQs and videos:http://www.codecamp.com.au/lindisfarne

ADDITIONAL LEARNINGFor Chess, the students will be taken class by class with Gardiner Chess expert, Alex Jule who has earned the category Womens International Chess Master, and works with several of the top Gold Coast schools coaching students to tournament level.

For both coding and chess, the class teachers will also have the opportunity to learn alongside their students, empowering them with their newly learned skills. Lindisfarne is committed to ensuring that every student matters, every day, and we feel both coding and chess imparts great life skills in the 21st century, and we look forward to sharing this opportunity with our students in 2017.

The 2017 Additional Learning Needs (ALN) team has been working hard on Gifted Awareness Week at local, state and national levels to encourage and promote a multitude of events centered on raising awareness of the needs of gifted children at Lindisfarne.

Dr Geraldine Townend, Dr Aranza Blackburn and Nancy Wines are delighted to celebrate and raise awareness of the needs of gifted children by speaking at the 22nd Biennial World Conference, Global Perspectives in Gifted Education in July this year.

The presentations include:Gifted English Language Learners - Success Stories in Secondary Schools (Dr. Blackburn).

Gifted Education Programming: one size does not fit all – a vision from the coalface (Dr Geraldine Townend and Nancy Wines).

Research presenting early career teachers’ perceptions, Australia-wide, of their preparedness to meet the needs of diverse learners, including gifted and twice-exceptional students (Dr Geraldine Townend).

AFLQ Schools Cup

Last Wednesday and Thursday saw Lindisfarne compete in the annual AFL Queensland School Cup knockout competition. This year we have seen an increase in the interest in school football and, as a result, were able to field a team in every division.

The Years 7, 8 and 9 boys and girls competition was first and both teams recorded a win and loss from their two games. As usual, both teams conducted themselves in the highest manner and were a credit to themselves and the school. The boys were lucky enough to be assisted by Mr Brett Sekac whose assistance was invaluable. Their win against Xavier Catholic College was fantastic and a good reward for their efforts. The junior girls’ team also played very well and will be much better for the experience next year.

Thursday saw the senior teams, Years 10, 11 and 12 compete. The boys played a very fast and free-flowing brand of football. Wins against Byron High School and Kingscliff High School were the result of a committed team approach from the boys and this resulted in their place in the grand final against a tough Trinity College Lismore team.

Unfortunately, the boys seemed to run out of energy in the final and after scoring early were unable to match their opponents. However, a spot in the grand final was a great reward for the hard work and attack on the football they showed throughout the day.

The other big story of the day was the Senior Girls football team who were very keen to begin their journey in the Schools Cup. After saying farewell to one third of their team from last year, the girls had been training hard to ensure that the player losses from last year could be well covered.

But they came up against a mighty opponent in the first round, Trinity College Lismore. Trinity played a very similar style to our girls and weren’t to be intimidated by our approach. In the end, a loss was recorded by 13 points in a very exciting game.

The next two games saw the girls victorious over their opponents by five goals, however the damage was done and they were unable to qualify for the next round. The girls were understandably disappointed as was Mr Bedford, but as the old cliché goes: “That’s football”. The girls will bounce back next year and look forward to playing a big role in the AFL Queensland School Cup.

Lindisfarne will also be fielding a boys and girls team in the primary division and information regarding this and training will be given out in early Term 2.

Rugby 7’s

Our 14’s and 16’s teams had mixed fortunes on Monday’s Rugby 7’s Gala Day at Brunswick. Despite losing their first game, and then losing any substitutes to injury, the 16’s ended the day winning the whole competition!

Lillian Dick continues on her path to be a Pearl when she attends Camp 1 for the Australian Commonwealth Youth Girls Sevens team held at the Sydney Academy of Sport – Narrabeen this Friday. This camp will be the first of three camps in the build up to the Australian Youth Girls Sevens team competing in the Commonwealth Youth Games from 19 to 23 July in the Bahamas.

Hockey

Congratulations to the Years 7 to 10 teams of girls and boys who performed so well in the Hockey NRCC on Tuesday in the rain at Murwillumbah. The boys finished a credible third and the girls won the competition! We have four teams representing the school on Wednesday from Stage 3 in the Fitzpatrick Shield. Good luck to the Division 1 team and have fun playing your first full-sized pitch match against the other players.

Soccer

The Primary Girls’ NCIS competition in Armidale was called off on Tuesday morning, as their championships are not a trial like the Primary Boys’, Open Girls and Open Boys. However, they will have their competition at Ballina on Friday, 28 April. We wish Olivia Kane well when she trials directly for the CIS Squad on Monday. The Secondary Girls and the Primary Boys lost to BDC, who won each of the championships. The Open Boys were competitive all day. Congratulations to the students who have been selected to represent the NCIS: Matthew Hodgson, Lawrence Miles-Mwangangi, Thomas van der Weegen, Hugo McAteer, Riley Wagner, James Hillman, Declan Ryan, Georgia Maynard and Isabella Wright. Lindisfarne’s teachers and students stood together wearing their badge of honour, in the form of an orange accessory, to demonstrate our commitment to keeping our school and our community a bullying-free zone.

Hello and welcome to the latest addition of the Staff Bio where we focus that blinding spotlight on our freshest ‘Farne fellows here at Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School. This week we give a warm welcome to… me!

Gold Coast born and raised, my career began in news reporting and public relations after graduating from Griffith University with a Bachelor of Journalism at age 20.

Revelling in the entertainment industry, I soon became the go-to-gal on the Glitter Strip for hosting interviews with some of the world’s top artists and movie stars – think Rihanna, Snoop Dogg, Jason Derulo, Flo Rida, Margot Robbie and many more. With this came “street cred” – no, not Snoop Dogg swag – credit from those high up in the realm of writing who took notice of my hard work and (sometimes overzealous) dedication to my work.

My passion led to some truly amazing travel opportunities within Australia, the UK and in Asia and over my time abroad, practically living out of a suitcase, I was able to meet some incredible people, witness things I never even imagined, and experience growth like nothing I’d felt before. But as all good things come to an end, so too did my Visa as I said goodbye to the hustle and bustle of a busy New Delhi street, and hello to the salty sea spray of the Coast.

In 2017, I’ve joined the marketing team here at Lindisfarne as the Gen-Y specialist covering everything driven by communications – look out Facebook you’re about to get a faceLIFT! With my finger firmly on the Lindisfarne pulse, I’m enthusiastic, upbeat and will be immersing myself in all facets of the School.

I will spend most my time in my slightly odd, nonagon-shaped office in the admin block at Mahers Lane, but you’ll surely see me out and about at both campuses at P&F, events and snapping some pics of the great things we’re doing as a school. See you around soon!

VICTORIA BEATTIE Creative Director & Co-Founder, The Beach People

The Beach People was founded in the summer of 2013 by sisters Emma Henderson and Victoria Beattie in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales Australia. Inspired by their family, friends and seaside lifestyle, with their passion for creating beautiful and iconic products, their first collection of round towels sold out in weeks.

A few short years later, they are building a globally admired brand of seaside luxe essentials for

everyone, everywhere to enhance one’s living spaces and life experiences from the beach to home.

The Beach People’s design process starts with an experience, location or an aesthetic inspiration. From there the story develops into an inspiring mood board of images, textures and cuttings. Emma and Victoria present their stories to a team of designers and artists who hand draw and render the unique products within the range.

Emma, Victoria and the team test the products in their homes, at the beach and on adventures with

family and friends.

As part of the Lindisfarne Parenting Series, parents and guardians will be given the opportunity to attend seminars each term that explore how we can support the social, emotional and academic development of our students.

The topic for the second presentation for 2017 is Confident and Capable.

Lindisfarne is excited to announce that they have engaged Dr Judith Locke to present this seminar. Dr Locke is an international researcher, counsellor and the best-selling author of ‘The Bonsai Child’. Through our dynamic training and one on one service we have been able to improve many people’s quality of life – at home, at work and in their most important relationships.” Dr Judith Locke.
