Happy Birthday President Lincoln ~ Lighthearted quotes from Abraham Lincoln:

If I were two-faced, would I be wearing this one?

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out andremove all doubt.

He can compress the most words into the smallest ideas better than any man Iever met. (referring to a lawyer)

It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues.

Did you ever wonder . . . About those people who still have Christmas lights lit inFebruary? What’s with those who hesitate, drag their feet, nearly refuse to “put away” Christmas?

I’m a member of this group. And as I drove up to the store last night, I saw several homes remaining inornamental light mode. We don’t want the holiday feeling to go away.

My Christmas tree still held all of its regalia in its branches until the end of January. A couple of days be-fore I'd begun the "dedecorating" a friend let me know that she had just “unplugged” the lights on her tree ~ a start, she said. Promptly, Iwalked into my dining room and took down the wreath. I put away a wintry holiday snow globe the next day. Two days later I began to boxup the ornaments. This got me to thinking that “dedecorating” feels better as a process for people like us.

When most of us decorate, we set aside one day and transform our homes with not only nativity scenes, the tree, and endless stands of lights, but also with wreathes, mistletoe, garland, red ribbons, candles andgingerbread houses. Within a matter of hours our homes change into our own personal magical kingdomsThe air is different, the energy dances, sweet smells waft from our kitchens and smiles grow broaderacross our faces.

Of course if we leave up all the décor year round, then we would get used to it and the “magic” would fade. But what if we systematically took down the decorations a little bit at a time so as to reacclimate into non

holiday mode? Well, that is what we did at my house this year. We decided to do a little putting awayeach day instead of seeing the dramatic stark disappearance of the season.

The question remains though: How do we stay living in the season throughout the year? Hark! I think theherald angels continue to sing. We can be in holiday mode in our mood all year long. Carry the season inyour heart and in your behavior. Don’t store away your kindness, your sense of giving, love and gratitudewith the décor in plastic tubs until next year. For the past several years I have left white lights (year round)outlining the large front window in my house~happy lights~happy reminder.

Working Class Hero Fund is a newly established organization founded on the tenet that

there are many good, hard working people in today’s society that experience traumaticevents that leave them unable to meet basic necessities. While these individuals wouldchoose not to seek charity, they find themselves in an unenviable position of needing assistance, and thenfind that they do not meet guidelines of more traditional providers.

WCHF will provide crisis funding for local individuals that can prove they are gainfully employed and canshow need. Participants must be able to articulate what circumstances caused the crisis, and what stepsthey plan to take to prevent similar circumstances from occurring again. Funds will not be distributed to theindividuals, but directly used to resolve the immediate crisis. Participants will not be asked to repay theamount, but will be asked to sign an ethical contract that will require that they somehow “pay forward” thegood will assistance that was given to them. That “pay it forward” can be as simple as helping a friend inneed, mowing the lawn of an elderly neighbor, or volunteering at a local non-profit.

Mardi Gras falls on Tuesday, February 16, 2010The terms "Mardi Gras" (mâr'·de grâ), "Mardi Gras season", and "Carnival season", in English,

refer to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Epiphany and ending on theday before Ash Wednesday. Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" (in ethnic English tradition,Shrove Tuesday), referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before theritual fasting of the Lenten season, which started on Ash Wednes-day. Related popular practices were associated with celebrationsbefore the fasting and religious obligations associated with thepenitential season of Lent. Popular practices included wearingmasks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Similar expressions to MardiGras appear in other European languages sharing the Christiantradition. In English, the day is called Shrove Tuesday, associatedwith the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins.Which means Easter Sunday is April 4th this year ~
