Primer paso

1. ¿En que día de la semana naciste?

2. ¿Cuántos años tenías cuando fuiste a la escuela por primera vez? ¿Quién te llevó?

0-2: ¡Qué mala memoria tienes! Tu pasado no te interesa.

3-4: Tienes buena memoria, pero no te acuerdas de los detalles.

5-6: Tienes una memoria excelente. Tu pasado te fascina.

Talking about what you used to doTo talk about what you used to do as a child:

De niña, veía mucho la televisión. When I was a child, …

De pequeños, mis hermanos y yo íbamos a la cama temprano.

De chiquito, no me gustaban las verduras.

Cuando era niña, leía muchas historias. Cuando era joven, mi familia y yo íbamos a la playa. Cuando tenía trece años, quería ser ingeniera.

GramáticaThe imperfect tense

You’ve already used the preterite tense to talk about the past. The preterite is uded to talk about completed actions in the past:

Ayer vi una película muy buena.

To talk about what you used to do or what you were like in the past, use the imperfect. It may also be used to tell how old you were and what time it was.

Yo tenía muchos juguetes. I used to have many toys. Escribíamos cartas largas. We used to write long letters.

All –ar verbs are regular in the imperfect tense.

The –er and –ir verbs share the same endings.

All verbs have a written accent in the nosotros form of the imperfect.

Saying what you used to like and dislikeTo ask what someone used to like and dislike:

¿Odiabas ir al colegio? Did you hate …? ¿Te molestaba hacer los quehaceres? Did … used to bother you?

¿Te parecía pesado el futbol? Did … seem boring to you?

¿Te caía bien Roberto? Did you like … ?

To answer:

No, lo encontraba genial. No, I thought it was great.

Sí, siempre me fastidiaba mucho. … it used to annoy me…

No, me fascinaba. No, I loved it.

Describing what people and things were likeTo ask someone what people and things were like:

¿Cómo era Iris en aquel entonces? What was … like back then?

¿Cómo era esta ciudad en aquellos tiempos? What was … like in those times?

En aquella época Iris era muy tímida. In those days… was…

En mis tiempos era mucho mas pequeña. In my time it was (used to be)…

GramáticaUse the verb ser (to be) to describe people and things in the past. Notice it is irregular:

yo era tú erasél/ella/usted era

nosotros éramosellos/as/ustedes eran

The imperfect of hay is había (there used to be). The plural form is the same as the singular.

Hay una tienda aquí.

Antes había una iglesia allí, y había tres tiendas allá.

Gramática

The word “o” changes to “u” before o- or ho-, and the word “y” changes to “e” before i- or hi-, in order to avoid repeating the same vowel sound.

No se si el perro tiene siete u ocho años. Pero todavía es alegre e inteligente.

Using comparisons to describe peopleOne way to describe people is to compare them to an animal or a plant. But you can’t always translate such comparisons literally! Here are some common Spanish expressions you can use:

Ella era tan buena como un ángel. ... (as good as) a saint.

José era tan feliz como una lombriz. … as happy as a lark.

Mi abuelo era tan noble como un perro. … as noble as a lion.

Yo era tan fuerte como un toro. … as strong as an ox.

Miguel era tan aburrido como un pato. … a terrible bore.

Silvia dormía tan bien como un lirón. … used to sleep like a baby.

To compare qualities of people or things that are the same or equal, use the following formula:

tan + adjective or adverb + como

Mi mama era tan buena como un ángel.El coche era tan rápido como la motocicleta.

To compare quantities that are the same or equal, use the formula:

tanto/tantos + noun + comotanta/tantas + noun + como

Yo tenía tanto dinero como mi hermano.María tenia tantas amigas como amigos.
