Introduction, Presentation and Welcome
The 11th EUROPEAN VACUUM CONFERENCE, EVC-11, is continuation of the series started in Salford, England, in 1988 under the
initiative of Professor J. Colligon, of the Manchester University. The main aim is to join scientist and engineers of the vacuum
and application field from the European Community as well from other countries to discuss the latest state of the art in differ-
ent topics of the conference from the previous meeting held in Balaton Lake, Hungary.
The Conference is held jointly with the 9th IBERIAN VACUUM MEETING, the join biannual meeting of the SPANISH VACUUM SO-
CIETY, ASEVA, and PORTUGUESE VACUUM SOCIETY, SOPORVAC, started in 1989 in Braga, Portugal, and the 6th EUROPEAN TOPI-
CAL CONFERENCE ON HARD COATINGS, initiate in Alicante, Spain in 1991. The meetings are co-organised by ASEVA and SOPOR-
VAC and we cordially invite you to participate and present the recent results of your research or technical improvements.
We are aware on the difficulties to prepare a program in the heterogeneous field of Vacuum Science and Applications, but par-
ticipants have the unique opportunity to interchange with topics that can be correlated with his field and could be an input for
your own research.

Session A Related with Vacuum Science and Surfaces
Session B Related with Thin Films and Hard Coatings
Invited lecturers for both sessions

The official language of the conferences is ENGLISH. During the week before the IUVSTA workshop on “Surface Phenomena Limiting Pressure in Vacuum Systems” will take place in Ávila (100 km from Madrid and 95 Km from Salamanca). Two IUVSTA short courses program in coincidence with these events has been arranged. We invite young scientist from any part of the world but especially from developing countries to attend the courses. An EXHIBITION has also organized jointly with the Conference and we expect that you will have the chance to know about the latest developments in instrumentation. A technical session has been also organized where manufacturers may present new instrumentation. Please do not forget to visit it. We deeply thank to the University of Salamanca as well to the Rector of the University to let us the use of facilities of the HIS-TORICAL BUILDING of the University. Both Chairmen on behalf of both Spanish Vacuum society, ASEVA, and Portuguese Vacuum Society, SOPORVAC, deeply thank the help of members of the Organizing and International Program Committees in the prepa-ration of the Program.

PUBLICATION
Presentations will be published as a regular issue of the Journal Vacuum. To prepare the manuscripts follow the instructions
as stated in the Vacuum Journal. Maximum length is: Invited presentations 5000 words, about four printed pages. Presenta-
tions 3000 word, about three printed pages. Manuscript exceeding these limits will not be accepted. Manuscript will be referee
according to the Journal standards. At the beginning of the manuscript three possible referees will be indicated.
