The Who’s Who award is one of the biggest academic honors on campus, because the students are se- lected from among some 900 seniors at SWOSU. Campus nominating committees and editors of the annual directory select the students based on academ- ic achievements, service to the com- munity, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. The SWOSU students will be honored at a reception on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. in the SWOSU Fine Arts Center on the Weatherford campus. Chamber of Commerce Meeting The Chamber of Commerce will meet Mon., Dec. 30, at noon at El Charro. Longdale Country Op’ra Holiday Party The Longdale Country Op’ra holiday party will be Sun., Dec. 29, at 7 p.m. at the Longdale Community Gym. Canton AA/NA Recovery Meetings AA/NA Recovery meetings are held at 7 pm on Thurs at the Commu- nity of Christ Church, 601 N. Broadway. January Deborah Acord was appointed to the Canton Town Board. Gayle Tautfest resigned and was re-appointed to the Town Board. A public meeting was held at the Canton Community Center to discuss the water release issues. Representatives from the Corps of Engineers, Ok Water Resources Board, United States Geological Survey, Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conser- vation, Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes, and elected officials (Rep. Mike Sand- ers and Sen. Blackwell, agents from Imhoff and Lucas’s offices) met with local residents to discuss the proposed release of water from Canton Lake. A wreck at the Pine Street/US 51 intersection sent Cheryl & Kendall Hickman of Seiling to Oklahoma City hospitals. Brandon Myers and two members of his family were treated and released at Okeene Hospital. Canton Schools received a “Merit” Certified Healthy School Award. City workers removed trees on Washington in preparation of re-doing the sidewalk on the east side. Approximately 250 people attended a meeting at the Canton Community Center concerning the release of Canton Lake water to Oklahoma City. The Town Board approved changes to rates for building permits and water/sewer taps. Canton Lake Association members met with the Oklahoma City Wa- ter Utilities Trust to voice concerns about withdrawal of water from Canton Lake. 2013 Canton Tiger Basketball Homecoming King & Queen were Clay Smith and Kacey Rogers. Longdale Op’ra closed until Feb. 10 because of so many being sick with the flu. Ribbon Cutting and Dedication was held for the new C&A Head Start building. The Canton Lake Association met with Corps of Engineers members in Tulsa to voice concerns about the release of water from Canton Lake. Officials said they would talk to OKC about utilizing water in Lake Hefner before drawing from Canton Lake. The Town Treasurer and two Trustee positions are up for re-election. Filing period will be Feb 4-6. Funeral services were held for Darlene Seifried, Charles Warren “Chuck” Carney, Byrel Wayne England, Sally Blood, Samuel Jay Wilkinson, Jane Livingston, William Jackson “Bill” Tate, Robert W. M. White. February Release of water to OKC began on January 30. State Sen. Marlett and State Rep. Sanders voiced strong disapproval with OKC for the way they handled the water release. It was decided to hold the Walleye Rodeo no mat- ter what the condition of the lake. Other types of activities are being con- sidered to help make the event successful. Kim Doak began her practice teaching at Arapaho. The Longdale Op’ra re-opened. Lions Club 5th-6th Tournament was held Feb 11-12. Rep. Sanders and ODOT members met with Oakwood citizens to discuss the widening of US 270 in the area. Eight CHS Seniors and their families were recognized at Senior Night. Ribbon cutting was held for the new Pioneer Telephone office. Jean Howard was the only person filing for Canton Treasurer, and Brandon Martin was the only one filing for Town Trustee. In Longdale, Elizabeth Moulton filed for Town Treasurer, and Lois McGuire filed for Town Clerk. Mike Hicks filed for the two year Trustee seat. Michael Colvard, Martha Berry, and James McGuire filed for the two four year seats. The School Board renewed the Principals Contracts for the next year. Highway 58A across Canton Dam closed on Feb. 27th for repairs that will take up to seven months to complete. Chester resi- dent Kathryn Unwin was killed in an accident west of Fairview. The gates at the lake were closed on Feb. 22, stopping the release of water to OKC. A State of Emergency was declared in 56 Oklahoma counties because of a winter storm and excessive snow. Included were Blaine, Dewey, and Major counties. Funeral services were held for Frankie Jo Ivins, Elza Eugene Coffey, Clarence Meat Sr, Naomi Adams, Daisy Louise Strohm, Minoma RedHat Koshiway, and Patricia Vera Grabow Laubach Bowers. March The Wildlife Department announced it would be monitoring Canton Lake in wake of the water release to Oklahoma City. The Walleye Rodeo Associa- tion held meetings and announced that many new events were being con- sidered for the Rodeo this year. Chelsey Hunt and Garrett Lance announced their engagement. The Canton Police Department announced they have brought the DARE program back to Canton Schools. Thanks to donations, the Canton Lake Association worked with the Corps of Engineers to extend the boat ramp at the Canadian Day use area so that boats would be able to get into the water. They also announced a public meeting to discuss future solutions to help preserve Canton Lake. Chris Vowell was elected Mayor and Brandon Martin Vice Mayor at the Town Board meeting. Kelsi Bond Musick was named GAC Coach of the Year. Her SWOSU Lady Dawgs played in their first NCAA Division II tournament. The Board of Education accepted the resignations of Edward Jinkens, Ruth White, and Jessica Digiorgio. Funeral services were held for Marlin D WhiteEagle, Sr, Robert Lee Ab- shire, Luther Allen Wall, Owen Hofacket, and Edna (Letha) Seifried Mason- hall. April A large group of people turned out for the Canton Lake Association meet- ing to voice concerns about release of water from Canton Lake. The Town Board held a special meeting to purchase new police cars and terminate Tim Allison. Susan Proffitt was killed in an accident near Oakwood. A lawsuit was filed in the Don Doyel death. Martha Berry was elected Mayor in Long- dale. Hunter Hood was named a finalist in the Ag in My Classroom Poster Contest. A barn belonging to Mamie Masonhall was listed on the Oklahoma and National Registers of Historical Buildings. Rates for trash dumpsters were raised. Raising water and sewer rates was proposed. Roger Gakel was hired part-time for the Public Works Department. Larry Thompson resigned from the Police Department. Dora Fuqua and her History Day students were honored by the Oklahoma Historical Society for their projects. Kingfisher firefighters donated a brush pumper to the Oakwood Fire Department. Dar- ren and April Scott were honored as 2013 Blaine Co. Farm/Ranch Family of the Year. Ryler James Jones was born March 25. Funeral services were held for Vickie Lynn (Curtis) Hoskins, Susan Re- nee Proffitt, Bruce Smith, and Eldon Fallis. May Canton graduation was held on May 3. Valedictorians were Kacy Rog- ers and Taylor Bromlow. Salutatorian was Leah Shifflett. The Chamber of Commerce honored the following people at their annual banquet. Citizen of the Year- Mark Fuqua, Business of the Year -This & That, Organization of the Year- The Canton Lake Association, and Farmer of the Year- Frank Mur- ray. Roy Ferguson was injured in a one vehicle accident. Julie Boucher was named Lions Club Citizen of the Year. Lions Club scholarships were given to Chad Miller and Paige Sutton. The 46th Annual Canton Walleye Rodeo was held May 16-19. Suzie Waldrep was the winner of the Pioneer Telephone Weather Ready Basket. The School Board accepted the resignations of Rob Davis and Cassandra Vaughan. The road across Canton Lake dam was closed for repairs. It was expected to be closed until at least September. A one mile and a 5K race were planned for Walleye Rodeo activities. The 2013 Long- dale School Reunion was May 26th. No action was taken by the Town Board during their regular meeting about hiring police officers or raising the water/ sewer rates. Despite a low turn out due to the low water level, the Walleye Rodeo was a success. The winning Walleye (5.73 lbs.) was caught by Rick Jackson, Ringwood. Most total poundage was 69.31 lbs. caught by Larry Hromas, Waukomis. Craig Smith was hired as a Canton Policeman. Kenneth and June Paulsen were involved in a car accident. Chad Miller represented Canton in the K101 Classic Bowl. Funeral services were held for Mayola Fay (Reichert) Phillips, and David Merrill Blood. June Mr. & Mrs. Frank Ake celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. An accident involving four cars happened on Main Street. Mr. & Mrs. Herb Hoskins celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mark Kopf brought in the first load of wheat on June 11. George Garman brought in the first load of Canola. Lacy Strunk and Mandy Jones resigned from Canton Schools. The Town Board voted to increase water rates beginning July 1. A routine traffic stop resulted in a possible drug seizure. Lorrie Brickman and Hank Moore were married June 3. Funeral services were held for James L. “Jim” Westfahl, Jr., and Alvena Q. Reichert. July Effective July 1, Paul and Maria Laubach purchased The Canton Times, The Okeene Record, and The Dewey County Record from Mack and Connie Miller. Samantha Carter and Brian Alonzo announced their engagement. Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Lee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The Southard School Reunion was July 6. The Canton Rodeo was held July 11-12. Dillon Chaloupek was a member of the Oklahoma team that competed in com- pound archery at the 4-H Shooting Sports Nationals. They took 1st place in the competition. A new fish habitat was installed at Canton Lake. The School Board accepted the resignations of Tina Rogers and Joshua Laney. They then hired Raelynn Gruver and Donna Slater as Elementary Teachers and Greg Hayes as HS Boys Basketball coach. Imogene Phillips celebrated her 90th birthday. Funeral services were held for Clyde Chaloupek and Glen Eldon Davis. August School began on August 12. Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kreger celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Paulsen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Rainfall helped the level at Canton Lake some. The ex- tension that was added to the boat ramp at Canadian Area was finally under- water. A wet July brought some relief to the drouth. An additional boat ramp was built at Canadian Area. Flatiron Hair & Fitness opened. Daniel Scott and Angela Farris were hired as teachers at Canton Schools. Norm Morgan is the new minister at Canton Church of Christ. Cortney Ruiz was killed in an accident SE of Canton. Fred Alexander won the Customer Appreciation drawing at Pioneer Telephone. Mr. & Mrs. Keith Long celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The third & fifth grade classes at Canton Elementary planted a garden. Funeral services were held for Charlene Sutton Lime, McKenzie Rae Blackwolf, Earl “Duane” Wymer, Donald Vernon Hatch, “Shorty” Charley Allen Paul Maze, Madalyn Irene Irving, and Courtney J. Michelle Tidball Ruiz. September Andrea Hutchison was named Agricultural Woman of the Year. Sophia Jane Parker was born Aug. 5. The Barefoot Pow Wow was held for the first time since 2002. Concerned citizens attended the Town Board meeting to ask questions about the possibility of switching the clinic offices with the town offices. The DARE program returned to Canton Schools. Mr. & Mrs. James Scott celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary along with their daughter and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Littleman, who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Canton Farm Supply celebrated 40 years of business. Carly Williams joined Head to Toe as a stylist. New Elementary teachers included Shannon Loudenslager, Angela Farris, Raelynn Gruver, Mica An- drews, and Donna Slater. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Alexander celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Elsie Edwards celebrated her 90th birthday. Funeral services were held for Christa Dawn Combs, June Russell, Bobby Joe Lind- sey, and Frank E. Ake, October Amateur Night was planned at the Grand Theatre. The Government shut- down caused campgrounds at Canton Lake to be closed. National Public Lands Day was a success, with many new trees and shrubs planted by volun- teers. The Elementary students picked produce from their garden. Rob Davis and daughter, Paige, were involved in an accident when a horse jumped onto their vehicle. Only minor injuries occurred. Chelsey Hunt and Garrett Lance were married June 1. Body Bond graduated from OBA Consumer Lend- ing School. Ten people, including Gregory Ryan, Nelson Calicoat, Carol Gilchrist, Robert Hoffman, and Jean Howard of Canton, received $71,000 each as their share of the one million dollar winning lottery jackpot. Lance Sessions was crowned King, and Shania Schoonmaker Queen, at the 2013 Canton Tiger Football Homecoming. Christmas at the Trail was set for Nov. 16. Sam Sackett released a fifth novel. Shelters and paved driveways were going in at the Canadian area. Funeral services were held for Freddie Lee McCurdy, Robert “Bobby” L. Hicks, Jr., Terry Lynn Hysell, Charles Gregg, Darell Grace Spies, Mary Lavina Gundlach, Lonny F. “Pete” Bonny, and Alondra Leigh Sankey. November Sherrie Haub was named Canton Teacher of the Year. The Pioneer Food Drive donated 123 food items to the Canton Lions Club for food baskets. The road across the dam finally opened to one-way traffic around Nov. 8. Several local business owners told how the water release from Canton Lake had af- fected their businesses. Mr. & Mrs. Lester Ritz celebrated their 60th anniver- sary. The first annual Christmas in the Park was a big success. Danea Abney was hired at Canton Schools as a para professional. Gayle Tautfest resigned from the Town Board. The 5th-6th grade Canton Tigers took 2nd place at the Thomas Tournament. Turkey Drawing winners included: Debi Hursh, Twila Alexander, Donna Willis, Brenda Gordon, Sarah Hoffman, Donna Kreger, Vernon Garrison, Jolynn Simon, Newakis Smoker, Larry Geiger, Tyron Lit- tle Coyote, and Alice Parker. Funeral services were held for Shirley Jean Hutton, Millage E. “John” Baker, Laverna Mary Smith, Michelle Cora “Shelby” RedHat, and Carrie Lee Howling Buffalo. What happened in Canton during 2013 No more water- The release of water to Oklahoma City starting Jan. 30, combined with the drought conditions, meant that the water levels in Canton Lake were very low. This caused a big economic impact on area. Compounding the problems at the lake, the road across the dam was closed on Feb. 27. It was supposed to take around seven months to finish, but it was not re-opened until early Nov. The third and fifth grade classes at Canton Elementary planted a garden this year. They worked hard taking care of the garden, and were rewarded with some very tasty vegetables. December Houston Edsel, Inc. celebrated 100 years of business. The Longdale Christmas program was held Dec. 13. Beth Seifried was the only person fil- ing for the position on the School Board. The Canton Christian Church held their Cantata Dec. 14 at the Grand Theatre, and Dec. 15 at the church. Will Robinson competed on the SWOSU White team in the Mind Games semi- finals. The School Board called for elections on Feb. 11, 2014 to approve two bond issues. One for $2,875,000 for building improvements, and one for $225,000 for transportation equipment. The Boy Scouts helped collect food to the Lions Club food drive. Longdale locals prepared 360 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes. George Garman brought in the first load of Canola. Lacy Strunk and Mandy Jones resigned from Canton Schools. The Town Board voted to increase water rates beginning July 1. A routine traffic stop resulted in a possible drug seizure. Lorrie Brickman and Hank Moore were married June 3.

Funeral services were held for James L. “Jim” Westfahl, Jr., and Alvena Q. Reichert.

The Okeene Record, and The Dewey County Record from Mack and Connie Miller. Samantha Carter and Brian Alonzo announced their engagement. Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Lee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The Southard School Reunion was July 6. The Canton Rodeo was held July 11-12. Dillon Chaloupek was a member of the Oklahoma team that competed in com-pound archery at the 4-H Shooting Sports Nationals. They took 1st place in the competition. A new fish habitat was installed at Canton Lake. The School Board accepted the resignations of Tina Rogers and Joshua Laney. They then hired Raelynn Gruver and Donna Slater as Elementary Teachers and Greg Hayes as HS Boys Basketball coach. Imogene Phillips celebrated her 90th birthday.

Funeral services were held for Clyde Chaloupek and Glen Eldon Davis.

AugustSchool began on August 12. Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kreger celebrated their

50th wedding anniversary. Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Paulsen celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Rainfall helped the level at Canton Lake some. The ex-tension that was added to the boat ramp at Canadian Area was finally under-water. A wet July brought some relief to the drouth. An additional boat ramp was built at Canadian Area. Flatiron Hair & Fitness opened. Daniel Scott and Angela Farris were hired as teachers at Canton Schools. Norm Morgan is the new minister at Canton Church of Christ. Cortney Ruiz was killed in an accident SE of Canton. Fred Alexander won the Customer Appreciation drawing at Pioneer Telephone. Mr. & Mrs. Keith Long celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The third & fifth grade classes at Canton Elementary planted a garden.

Funeral services were held for Charlene Sutton Lime, McKenzie Rae Blackwolf, Earl “Duane” Wymer, Donald Vernon Hatch, “Shorty” Charley Allen Paul Maze, Madalyn Irene Irving, and Courtney J. Michelle Tidball Ruiz.

Concerned citizens attended the Town Board meeting to ask questions about the possibility of switching the clinic offices with the town offices. The DARE program returned to Canton Schools. Mr. & Mrs. James Scott celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary along with their daughter and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth Littleman, who celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Canton Farm Supply celebrated 40 years of business. Carly Williams joined Head to Toe as a stylist. New Elementary teachers included Shannon Loudenslager, Angela Farris, Raelynn Gruver, Mica An-drews, and Donna Slater. Mr. & Mrs. Fred Alexander celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. OctoberAmateur Night was planned at the Grand Theatre. The Government shut-

down caused campgrounds at Canton Lake to be closed. National Public Lands Day was a success, with many new trees and shrubs planted by volun-teers. The Elementary students picked produce from their garden. Rob Davis and daughter, Paige, were involved in an accident when a horse jumped onto their vehicle. Only minor injuries occurred. Chelsey Hunt and Garrett Lance were married June 1. Body Bond graduated from OBA Consumer Lend-ing School. Ten people, including Gregory Ryan, Nelson Calicoat, Carol Gilchrist, Robert Hoffman, and Jean Howard of Canton, received $71,000 each as their share of the one million dollar winning lottery jackpot. Lance Sessions was crowned King, and Shania Schoonmaker Queen, at the 2013 Canton Tiger Football Homecoming. Christmas at the Trail was set for Nov. 16. Sam Sackett released a fifth novel. Shelters and paved driveways were going in at the Canadian area.

NovemberSherrie Haub was named Canton Teacher of the Year. The Pioneer Food

Drive donated 123 food items to the Canton Lions Club for food baskets. The road across the dam finally opened to one-way traffic around Nov. 8. Several local business owners told how the water release from Canton Lake had af-fected their businesses. Mr. & Mrs. Lester Ritz celebrated their 60th anniver-sary. The first annual Christmas in the Park was a big success. Danea Abney was hired at Canton Schools as a para professional. Gayle Tautfest resigned from the Town Board. The 5th-6th grade Canton Tigers took 2nd place at the Thomas Tournament. Turkey Drawing winners included: Debi Hursh, Twila Alexander, Donna Willis, Brenda Gordon, Sarah Hoffman, Donna Kreger, Vernon Garrison, Jolynn Simon, Newakis Smoker, Larry Geiger, Tyron Lit-tle Coyote, and Alice Parker.

Funeral services were held for Shirley Jean Hutton, Millage E. “John” Baker, Laverna Mary Smith, Michelle Cora “Shelby” RedHat, and Carrie Lee Howling Buffalo.

What happened in Canton during 2013

No more water- The release of water to Oklahoma City starting Jan. 30, combined with the drought conditions, meant that the water levels in Canton Lake were very low. This caused a big economic impact on area.

Compounding the problems at the lake, the road across the dam was closed on Feb. 27. It was supposed to take around seven months to finish, but it was not re-opened until early Nov.

The third and fifth grade classes at Canton Elementary planted a garden this year. They worked hard taking care of the garden, and were rewarded with some very tasty vegetables.

DecemberHouston Edsel, Inc. celebrated 100 years of business. The Longdale

Christmas program was held Dec. 13. Beth Seifried was the only person fil-ing for the position on the School Board. The Canton Christian Church held their Cantata Dec. 14 at the Grand Theatre, and Dec. 15 at the church. Will Robinson competed on the SWOSU White team in the Mind Games semi-finals. The School Board called for elections on Feb. 11, 2014 to approve two bond issues. One for $2,875,000 for building improvements, and one for $225,000 for transportation equipment. The Boy Scouts helped collect food to the Lions Club food drive. Longdale locals prepared 360 Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes.

P&R Herefords, Leedey, Okla., has graciously donated the proceeds from the pick of its 2014 heifer calves to the Hereford Youth Foundation of America (HYFA). The pick will sell as Lot 19 in the Mile High Night Sale during the National Western Stock Show in Denver on Jan. 17.

Paul, Maria, Alex and Sophia Laubach, along with Ross Laubach are owners of P&R Herefords. The Craig and Laubach families have

been ranching for 113 years in west-ern Oklahoma and they have made this generous contribution to benefit Hereford youth.

The P&R Herefords herd is an-chored by daughters of CL 1 Domino 5110R, the No. 1 maternal milk sire in the Hereford breed. The P&R cow herd is considered to be one of the most functional, efficient cow herds in the Southwest.
