GISBORNE DISTRICT COUNCIL2

At Council, we encourage you to reduce your household waste as much as you can.

This guide will help you know what to do with your rubbish, recycling and waste.

Sort what can be recycled, re-used or re-purposed from your general rubbish. Know what can be put into your kerbside recycling bin and the correct place to dispose of rubbish, greenwaste and the things you no longer want.

Every little bit helps our environment and helps keep the cost of managing waste down. This means lower rates and charges for you and a healthier place to live for everyone.

We’re here to help so if you have any questions please contact our customer services team on 06 867 2049, email [email protected] or head to our website www.gdc.govt.nz.

YOUR GUIDE TO RUBBISH AND RECYCLING

Weigh it up

One sticker can be used for up to 5kg of rubbish.

More rubbish means you’ll need to use more than one sticker, and only up to a maximum of 4 stickers (20kgs) for one bag.

Reducing what you throw away in your rubbish bag will reduce the amount and weight of your rubbish.

Sort out what you can recycle or make into compost.

Make it safe

For the safety of our collectors, wrap any glass or sharp items before putting them in the rubbish.

Don’t put hot ashes in your rubbish.

Secure your bag to reduce litter getting onto roads and waterways.

Avoid leaving rubbish (especially with scraps or meat) out overnight for animals to get in to.

Stick a sticker on it

All households where rubbish is collected are allocated 52 rubbish stickers a year.

Stickers are delivered to the ratepayer in the rates invoice every three months. If you’re renting check with your landlord about access to stickers.

You can buy extra stickers from the supermarkets, most dairies, service stations and Council starting at $2.50 each.

Don’t waste foodKeep food and garden waste out of your general rubbish.

Food waste can be separated out for animal feed, composted or put in a wormfarm.

Bokashi bins breakdown a large range of food scraps, including meat and cooked leftovers, ready for your garden or compost. The Bokashi Zing is for sale at Council.

Find tips and advice on the LoveFoodHateWaste facebook page for how to reduce food wastage, store food longer, and make use of your leftovers.

Compost itYour garden waste can be used to make healthy compost. We offer free composting workshops throughout the year, and a free compost bin. See our website for workshop dates and composting, wormfarming and Bokashi tips. You can also take garden waste to the Transfer Station or to DB Judds, McDonald Rd.

Go green...keep Tairāwhiti clean

Kākāriki whāia... Tairāwhiti māia

FOOD AND GREENWASTE can be removed from general rubbish and put into a compost or wormfarm.

YOUR GUIDE TO RUBBISH AND RECYCLING

LitterLitter makes our streets untidy and rubbish ends up on our beaches and in our waterways.

When in public places, take your rubbish home with you or use the litter bins where provided.

Don’t dump household or commercial rubbish in litter bins, it’s illegal.

Illegal dumpingDumping rubbish in public places is not cool.

We monitor hotspots where people dump rubbish and we investigate all cases of illegal dumping. Offenders will be fined and prosecuted.

If you see someone littering or dumping, contact us right away, 24 hours a day. Freephone 0800 653 800 or send us photos @GisborneDC on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Community Clean-upsWe support groups doing beach, streamside and reserve clean ups with equipment and free rubbish disposal. Contact us if you want to arrange a clean up day.
