Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a supportive Christian community, equipping each student for life.

Volunteering With volunteers playing such a vital role in our school community, I believe I can safely say that Waikerie Lutheran Primary School is a better place because of it. On behalf of the staff and students I would like to thank you for this.

Volunteers have worked diligently, contributing in various capacities, as gifts and talents, as well as time, permit. Volunteering in the classrooms, at working bees, for fundraisers, on excursions, cleaning etc, has benefited our children in ways we may never truly understand. I am always amazed at the many gifts and talents people have been blessed with and are willing to share unselfishly, so that others may benefit.

Putting others before oneself is a true mark of serving others. Serving others, through volunteering, brings many benefits. The person being served or helped generally receives with a thankful heart, which in turn brings joy to the giver. A life of service however, should not be done to receive rewards for self, but rather done from the heart. Serving is not "all about me." It's all about the others. I am sure if you asked any of the firemen in NSW this past week, they have not been there doing the job for themselves, but for others. This is always in the fore, and they expect no reward for their efforts. It comes from the heart.

The volunteering in classrooms has helped many children and brought a smile to many a child's face. People helping at working bees have helped keep our grounds looking beautiful and made improvements to them. People assisting at various fund raisers and excursions has benefitted the children in their learning. I encourage all of us to use our gifts to serve others; to serve form the heart, and to bring joy to others through this. 1 Peter 4:10 reminds us that we "should use whatever gift (we) you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms." Serve with a cheerful heart. May God bless you in all that you do for others.

Corner of Peace

I love to listen to music and songs whilst I drive in to school, and today, as I was considering subjects that would suit for the Corner of Peace, I heard the word “speechless” in the beautiful song by that name. In a time of constant speech, and background noise and voices, it is not often that we are in, or with others, in a speechless state. Particularly in our Western society people seem to be uncomfortable with silence and will talk just to fill the silence with sound. I find myself guilty of this too, and have been trying to train myself to only speak when words are needed. However I have noticed that Aboriginal people, Eastern people and African people do understand the need to just be quiet with one another. As a young person I was very shy so did not speak unnecessarily, especially around those I was unfamiliar with (people don’t believe that was so – but I assure it was!) Even at a young age I loved people (as I do now) but shyness controlled my tongue. Life and circumstances changed that. I am really grateful that I can now speak with anyone whether I know them or not, however there is a sting in that tail. Now I have to learn that words just for the sake of speaking are not helpful….and as I have grown older I have found this growing on me…… I still love to be with people and talk with them but I have learned to listen, as well, and be silent when I or some-one needs me to. Fortunately for me I have had help from the Master Teacher. The Bible warns that the tongue can be a dangerous “fire” when wrongly used and that it is a wise man’s lips that guide his heart – in other words are powerful and what we say does matter. We can learn much too from Job’s friends who visited him when he had lost all he had including his children and his health – in Job2:12-13 we hear that “12 And when they raised their eyes from afar, and did not recognize him, they lifted their voices and wept; and each one tore his robe and sprinkled dust on his head toward heaven. 13 So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very great.” God bless Moira
