Yellow tape now marksthe boundaries of the cavity thatbecame a sensation and put themuseum on the map. And insteadof a gaping sinkhole drivingtourism, now it’s the vintagesports cars crunched by rocksand dirt.Work ended recently to fill in

the pit that consumed eightprized sports cars in early 2014.The repaired exhibit area has be-come a magnet for visitors, andthe dirt-caked remains of themangled cars are the stars.Where the 60-foot-long, 45-foot-

For museum officials, the trickis to keep the site’s popularityfrom going in reverse now thatvisitors can’t gawk at the sink-hole. The museum cashed in onthe giant chasm with record at-tendance and revenue in 2014.

Last year, the museum just offthe interstate drew 251,258 visi-tors, easily topping the 150, 462visitors in 2013. The museum’sprior record attendance was200,900 in 1999. Through lastmonth, attendance for 2015 wasoff just 2.5 percent compared tothe first seven months of 2014,the museum said.

“We just want to try to do ourbest to make sure the decrease isas little as possible,’’ Museum ex-ecutive director Wendell Strodesaid.

Maintaining that momentumwill be challenging, said JasonSwanson, a University of Ken-

tucky assistant professor in hos-pitality management andtourism. Even if the sinkhole hadbeen left open, the publicity thathelped spark the attendancebump would have eventuallywaned, he said.

“The museum is better offsince more people now know ofthe museum because of the sink-hole’s publicity,’’ Swanson said.“However, 10 years down theroad, 2014 and 2015 will likely beseen as an anomaly.’’

The museum is doing its partto keep the sinkhole etched as acuriosity.

A temporary exhibit shows thenow-famous security camerafootage of the floor’s collapse

and cars toppling like toys intothe pit.

That footage has been viewedabout 8.5 million times onYouTube, the museum said. Thehole opened up when the muse-um was closed, and no one wasinjured.

There’s also video of the dam-aged Corvettes being pulled fromthe hole. Also featured are con-dolence cards to the museum.One card-sender wrote of being“devastated to hear of yourloss.’’

A new sinkhole-themed exhibitis scheduled to open this fall.

Kidd said he wished at leastpart of the sinkhole had gone un-plugged. It was an option dis-

cussed by museum leaders be-fore they opted to fill it in.

“It’s human nature to comeand see,’’ Kidd said.

As of Aug. 3, Cleveland-basedCrowne Group, LLC, has ac-quired Troy-based Vari-Form, amanufacturer of lightweight, hy-droformed structural parts forpickup trucks, SUVs and light ve-hicles.

Vari-Form has three manufac-turing locations in North Americawith a state-of-the-art technicalcenter in Strathroy, Ontario, Cana-da and a non-union workforce ofapproximately 400 employees,said Vari-Form spokesman TerryNardone.

Vari-Form is also expanding itsglobal footprint with new plantsunder joint venture relationshipsin Mexico and Italy scheduled tobegin operations this year.Terms of the transaction werenot disclosed, Nardone said.

DETROIT (AP) – Electric carmaker Tesla Motors said Aug. 13it hopes to raise around $500million in a stock offering thatcomes as it prepares to roll outits anticipated new SUV.Tesla will offer 2.1 million

shares and expects net proceedsof $492.6 million. Tesla couldmake up to $566.5 million if theunderwriters exercise their op-tion to buy additional shares.Tesla CEO Elon Musk intends

to purchase $20 million worth ofstock. The company’s sharesrose 1 percent to $240.94 in lateafternoon trading.Wall Street had been expecting

the move. Asked in early Augustduring the company’s second-quarter earnings call if Teslaplanned to raise capital, Musksaid there might be value in do-ing so “as a risk reduction meas-ure. I don’t think that there’s nota need to raise equity capital,’’Musk said.
