GM has officially declared that Buick will cease making the mod- el come this fall. Buick spokeswoman Jennifer Korail issued this statement: “Buick is announcing that the Ve- rano, manufactured in Orion, Michigan, will be phased out in North America following a short 2017 model year run ending in October 2016. The announce- ment underscores the changing consumer market dynamics where there is a growing demand for SUVs in North America.” Korail further stated that GM does not foresee any immediate impact on production at the Ori- on assembly facility. As to what replaces the Vera- no, Korail wrote, “. . . as a global brand, Buick remains committed to providing customers a com- pelling vehicle portfolio that meets the specific needs and de- mands of each country where it operates.” The Verano is a relatively new model in the Buick portfolio. Pro- duction of the first edition, the 2012 Verano, begin in 2011. At the time of its introduction, GM wrote of the Verano that it was designed to be a compact luxury sedan. It’s built on GM’s Delta II plat- form, which was developed by Opel in Germany and is the suc- cessor of the GM Delta platform. Other vehicles using the Delta II include the Opel Ampera, the Cadillac ELR and the Opel Casca- da, which will be sold in the U.S. as the Buick Cascada. At the time of its introduction in late 2011, John Schwegman, then vice president of Buick Mar- keting, said, “Verano expands our lineup, continues Buick’s mo- mentum and gives us a great op- portunity to attract a new gener- ation of customers with a prod- uct that delivers on their expec- tations for design, performance and technology. “It is a smart choice that deliv- ers unexpected luxury in a com- pact sedan – and it will compete head-to-head with competitors from Audi and Lexus.” Buick spokespeople stated that the Verano carried the mod- ern Buick design cues introduced on the Enclave, the LaCrosse and the Regal. But consumer vehicle prefer- ences have changed in the last few years. In a paper issued in August of 2015, Philly Murtha of J.D. Power wrote that SUVs, par- ticularly compact crossover utili- ties, were among the most-in- demand vehicles in the United States. Murtha wrote that as of August 2015, one of the major drivers be- hind this trend to own an SUV is “that gasoline prices remain rea- sonable, averaging $2.65 per gal- lon in mid-August vs. $3.47 a year ago, while SUV engine perform- ance and fuel economy im- proves. “In addition, manufacturers continue to make upgrades to the utility, comfort, safety, and technology features of non-pre- mium as well as luxury or premi- um SUV models.” Tom Libby, manager and Auto Industry analyst for IHS Automo- tive, said that it’s understandable that Buick did what it did by end- ing the Verano. “The market is shifting,” Libby said, “toward CUVs and SUVs away from what we think of as the traditional sedan body type of car. Buick is simply respond- ing to the marketplace. It’s un- derstandable and it makes sense. This is a trend that’s been going on since the turn of the century. I can safely say that this is a trend that isn’t going away.” Libby also said that the Verano was a competitive vehicle in its market segment. “But that segment is languish- ing,” Libby said. “The CUV and SUV segment is really growing. So this move makes sense.” Korail said that GM will contin- ue to manufacture the version of the Verano sold in China. Buick Verano is Driving Out of the Picture This Fall The 2016 Buick Verano will be the last version produced by GM. 2016 Chevrolet Malibu 2016 Jeep Compass 2016 Ford Escape General Motors sold 190,613 vehicles in May to individual or “retail” customers, down 13 per- cent from last May. This is largely due to two fewer selling days and very tight sup- plies of new launched products, said GM spokesman Dan Flores. Based on industry estimates, GM’s retail sales were in line with industry performance. Customer demand has signifi- cantly exceeded supply for new vehicles like the Malibu, Cruze, XT5 and CT6, Flores said. GM’s full-size utilities, mid-size pick- ups and small crossovers contin- ued to show strength in the retail marketplace with double-digit in- creases for Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, GM Retail Sales Increase More Than 1 Percent in May Fiat Chrysler had U.S. sales of 204,452 units, a 1 percent in- crease compared with sales in May 2015 (202,227 units), and the group’s best May sales in 11 years, said Fiat Chrysler spokesman Ralph Kisiel. The Jeep and Ram Truck brands each posted year-over- year sales gains in May com- pared with the same month a year ago. Pickup Trucks Lead Ford Sales in May

DETROIT (AP) – Eight auto-makers are recalling more than12 million vehicles in the U.S. toreplace potentially dangerousTakata air bag inflators.Documents detailing recalls by

Honda, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota,Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Ferrariand Mitsubishi were posted May27 by the National Highway Traf-fic Safety Administration.They’re part of a massive ex-

pansion of Takata air bag recallsannounced earlier this month.Seventeen automakers areadding 35 million to 40 million in-flators to what already was thelargest auto recall in U.S. history.

In addition, the Japanese trans-port ministry last week an-nounced 7 million additional re-calls related to the Takata infla-tors. Those recalls cover all frontair bags that do not have a chem-ical drying agent.May 27’s U.S. recalls include

passenger air bags in oldermodelsin areas along the Gulf Coast withhigh heat and humidity. But otherareas of the country are also af-fected, depending on the age ofvehicles.Takata uses the chemical am-

monium nitrate to create a smallexplosion that inflates the air bagsin a crash. But the chemical can de-teriorate over time when exposedto high heat and humidity andburn faster than designed. Thatcan blow apart ametal canister de-signed to contain the explosion,spewing hot shrapnel into vehicles.The inflators are responsible

for 11 deaths and more than 100injuries worldwide. Two addi-tional deaths are under investiga-tion in Malaysia and may havebeen caused by the inflators.The recalls are among the first

to be unveiled by automakerssince Takata agreed to the recallexpansion, and more recalls willbe announced in the comingweek. The recalls are beingphased in by the governmentdue to a lack of available replace-ment parts. Models that are from2011 or older in high heat and hu-midity areas will get first priority,followed by 2008 and older mod-els in Southern-tier states, then2004 and older models in the restof the country.Research has shown that it

takes at least six years for theammonium nitrate to deterio-rate. That’s the reason oldermodels are getting priority.Honda had the biggest recall

total last week with more than4.5 million inflators, while FiatChrysler reported 4.3 million.The Honda total even includesabout 2,700 Gold Wing motorcy-cles with optional front air bags.Honda says the latest recall

covers only about 2.2 millionadditional Honda and Acuravehicles. The other 2.3 millionvehicles were recalled previously

for other Takata air bag prob-lems. Honda expects the recallsto start in late summer for auto-mobiles and in late fall for themotorcycles.Fiat Chrysler said it’s not

aware of any crashes or injuriesinvolving its vehicles that arepart of the recall.The latest recalls cover mainly

front passenger air bag inflatorswithout the chemical dryingagent. The jury is still out onwhether Takata will have to re-call millions more inflators withthe drying agent.Takata has to prove to the gov-

ernment that those are safe bythe end of 2019, or they will berecalled.Since the recalled models vary

by state and age, officials saythat the best way to see if yourcar is affected is to go tohttps://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ ormanufacturer websites and keyin the vehicle identification num-ber. That number can be foundon the driver’s side of the dash-board near the windshield or onyour state vehicle registration.

Boththe Jeep Renegade – the newestentry to the Jeep product lineup– and the Jeep Patriot turned intheir best monthly sales ever.Sales of the Jeep Grand Chero-

kee were up 4 percent for itsbest May sales since the year2000, Kisiel said. Ram Truckbrand sales, which include theRam pickup, Ram ProMaster andRam ProMaster City, were upslightly in May for its best Maysales since 2005. Both the RamProMaster and Ram ProMasterCity vans each recorded theirbest May sales ever.Dodge Grand Caravan sales

were up 76 percent last monthfor its best May sales since 2014,while Dodge Durango sales in-creased 2 percent for its bestMay sales performance since2005, Kisiel said. In addition,Dodge Charger sales were up 5percent for its best May in twoyears. Dodge brand sales weredown 5 percent in May com-pared with the same month ayear ago.In its second month on sale,

the new 2017 Chrysler Pacificaminivan posted sales of 2,495units, up significantly from the487 units sold in its initial monthon sale in April, Kisiel said.Sales of the Chrysler 300 full-

size sedan were up 38 percentfor its best May sales since 2012.In addition, Chrysler Town &Country sales were up 49 per-cent.

“We’re working with the indus-try and MDOT so that once thesevehicles are on the road, you canrest assured that they are safe,”said the lead sponsor, Republi-can Sen. Mike Kowall, who livesnear a GM testing facility in sub-urban Detroit.

“I see the autonomous vehi-cles being tested on the roadevery day. It’s weird. But it’s

what’s going to move the indus-try into the 24th, 25th century.”

Consumer Watchdog, a Califor-nia-based advocacy group thathas voiced safety and privacyconcerns over autonomous vehi-cles, criticized the Michigan legis-lation. President Jamie Court saida “line needs to be drawn” to en-sure that a human driver can takecontrol if something goes wrong.Court said self-driving cars havea “long, long way to go” in partbecause “robots and humansdon’t communicate.”

One of the Michigan billswould end the human operatorrequirement, while anotherwould help create a facility totest autonomous and wirelesslyconnected cars at highwayspeeds at the site of a defunctGM plant that once churned outWorld War II bombers.

“The demand has been sostrong for our new launch prod-ucts, there’s no question wecould’ve sold more; however,production was impacted at Fair-fax, Lordstown and Spring Hill bythe Japanese earthquakes,” saidKurt McNeil, GM vice presidentof Sales Operations.

“Current dealer inventories forlaunch products are about half ofwhat we’d like for launch prod-ucts, but availability is improv-ing, which sets us up well for thesecond half of the year.”

Through the first five monthsof the year, General Motors retailsales are up more than 1 percentand the company’s retail share isup by 0.6 percentage points, thelargest retail share increase ofany full-line automaker, McNeilsaid.

Year to date, Chevrolet retailsales are up by 3 percent and re-tail share has grown 0.6 percent-age points, McNeil said.

Chevrolet remains the fastest-growing full-line brand in the in-dustry, Flores said.

Year to date, Buick retail deliv-eries have grown 5 percent andBuick has gained 0.1 percentagepoints of retail share.

GM’s Commercial deliverieswere up for the 31st consecutivemonth while daily rental saleswere down 21,753 vehicles or 49percent from last May asplanned, Flores said.

General Motors total saleswere down 18 percent to 240,450vehicles, driven largely by theplanned rental reduction, as wellas there being two fewer sellingdays in May 2016 compared withMay 2015.

The new Malibu continues togain share in a very competitivesegment, Flores said, with retailshare doubling to more than 10percent year to date.

In May, the new Cruze account-ed for 85 percent of the Cruze re-tail sales compared with 53 per-cent in April, Flores said.

“We continue to execute ourretail-focused sales strategy andmaintain disciplined inventoriesand incentive spending withgreat products,” said McNeil.“Our incentives continue to bewell below our domestic andmany Asian competitors.

“Also, our rental reductionstrategy is clearly divergent fromour key competitors and it’splaying a critical role in our ef-forts to strengthen our brands,improve our residual values andbuild the fundamental health ofour business.”

General Motors is continuingits strategy of reducing dailyrental deliveries to boost thecompany’s sales.

Year-to-date, GM’s rental deliv-eries are down more than 82,000vehicles from a year ago, Floressaid.

Overall, May’s sales figuresrepresented the largest singlesales monthly decline of 2015-2016 for General Motors, McNeilsaid.

“We expect key economic indi-cators like historically low inter-est rates, rising wages, stablefuel prices and strong employ-ment to continue for the fore-seeable future,” said MustafaMohatarem, General Motors’chief economist.

“These positive economic fac-tors point toward continuedstrong auto sales as the industryworks its way toward anotherrecord year of sales.”
