Wrexham Power Limited (WPL) is consulting the community on plans for Wrexham EnergyCentre, a new gas-fired power station on Wrexham Industrial Estate. Our plans will:

n Bring investment and more skilled jobs to Wrexham n Support the success of existing businesses on Wrexham Industrial Estate n Be part of securing the UK’s supply of electricity.

We will create:n Up to 1,200 construction jobsn Up to 50 highly skilled permanent jobsn An improved supply of power to the Wrexham Industrial Estate, increasing its

attractiveness to businesses n The opportunity to provide cheaper power, gas and heat to businesses based

on the Estate. We are still at an early stage of the project and this brochure introduces our plans and howyou can have your say. More detailed information is available at www.wrexham-power.com.

about wrexham power limitedWPL is a joint venture between St. Modwen and Glenfinnan. Both companies haveextensive experience of large scale development and regeneration projects across theUK and in the energy market.

wrexham energy centrehow will it work? The Wrexham Energy Centre proposals are for a combined cycle gas turbine power station (CCGT). Far more efficient thantraditional gas power stations, CCGT plants use both gas and steam to generate electricity.

Initially, compressed air and ignitedgas are fed into a combustion turbinethat spins an electricity generator toproduce electricity. The heatgenerated by this process is used tocreate steam, which is used to spin asecond turbine attached to aseparate electricity generator. Thisturns what could be waste heat into avaluable source of power.1. Gas and air fed into turbine2. Gas turbine drives generator,

creating electricity3. Left over heat creates steam4. Steam drives turbine, driving

generator, creating more electricity

wrexham energy centrewhat does it mean?We are proposing a new gas-fired powerstation on Wrexham Industrial Estate. The1 GW (gigawatt) Energy Centre will provideenough power to supply 1,250,000 homes andhas the potential to provide discounted heat, electricity and gas to businesses on theindustrial estate. This represents a multi-million poundinvestment in Wrexham and the WrexhamIndustrial Estate.Gas-fired power stations are, and will continueto be, a fundamental part of the UK’s energynetwork. They are:

n Efficientn Reliablen Flexiblen Being built to be ready for carbon capture

and storage technology.

the future of energyThe UK and Europe are moving towards generating cleaner, low-carbonpower. To meet EU emissions targets by 2020, coal and oil-fired power stationsare set to close across the UK. A number of nuclear power stations arealso coming to the end of their functional lives. In total, approximately 22 GW of generating capacity, more than one thirdof UK peak demand, has to be replaced and gas-fired power stations havean important role to play in meeting this energy challenge.

our siteconnecting the energy centreWe would need to connect the Energy Centre to the national gas and electricity grid connections. At present we are looking atroute corridor options to make these connections. At this early stage we are assessing our options and are seeking your feedback on:

n The route corridor options for connecting the Energy Centre to the gas network (see right of this page)

n The route corridor options for connecting the Energy Centre to the national electricity grid (see following page).

a good locationThe Wrexham Industrial Estate is a good location for a new power station.Demand for electricity in Wrexham significantly outstrips local supply. Afterstudying a number of potential local sites, we have chosen this one as:

n It is near the national gas transmission networkn There is a clear connection route to the national electricity grid n It has the potential to provide discounted power and heating to

businesses on the industrial estaten It is an allocated development site with an existing consent for a

500,000 sq ft industrial building.

Each of the above route corridor options represent a study area within which transmissioninfrastructure could be located. The exact route and form for this infrastructure will be developedover the course of the consultation process, and after a preferred option has been selected.
