Week 9 Term 3, 10th September 2014 Dear Parents, Sue Mackay Principal Week 8 Term 1, 16th March 2016 Dear Parents, Each year, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in NAPLAN assessments. For 2016, the dates will be 10th, 11th and 12th May. Naplan tests are one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace ongoing school based assessments developed by class teachers. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. Parents are encouraged to visit the website below for more information and to access sample NAPLAN questions. http://www.nap.edu.au/verve/_resources/NAPLAN_2016_information_for_parents_web.pdf All students are encouraged to participate in NAPLAN tests, however students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support that they would normally receive in classrooms. Please make sure you contact the school if you wish to discuss your child’s participation in the testing program. The Education Act 1990 requires that every government school allow time for the religious education of children of any religious persuasion. The Act was amended in 2010/2011 to allow special education in ethics as an option for students who have been withdrawn from Special Religious Education (SRE). Parents also have the option to decide that they do not want their child to participate in either of these lessons. Every year an involved timetable needs to be developed which balances the number of children in Scripture and Ethics classes, the availability of teachers for SRE and Ethics classes and the appropriate placement of students not attending either. SRE and Ethics are timetabled at the same time of the day for any given class. It is not permitted for formal activities nor academic instruction to occur at this time set aside. Students who do not attend lessons are supervised in a neighbouring age appropriate class. Each of the classes are taught by personnel registered by the individual providers with child protection checks needing to be current and valid. Lessons are for a 30 minute period each. Schools are required to communicate to parents the organisation for special education in the school. Please refer to the table below for an overview of when you can expect the time allocation for special education to occur for your child. Tuesday (9.15am – 11.15am) - 1/2LB, 2CB, 1SG, 1LB, Yr 1(K/1M), 1RC, 1NL, 2VW, 2LM. Wednesday (9.15am – 11.15am) - KC, KS, KM, KG, KR. Friday (9.15am – 11.15am) - 4/5DH, 3MW, 5DD, 6LS, 4CA, 3JB, 5LF, 6KN, 4GH, 3/4TW, 5AM, 5/6JC. At KPS, the Deputy Principal, Mrs O’dell, is the first point of call person for all questions and queries with regards to Special Education. The school’s Religious Education Policy is published on our school website for your reference. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have queries or questions with regards to NAPLAN or the Education Act. ICAS Competitions

A reminder that the last day to pay for Digital Technologies and Science is 5th April. I have placed detailed information in the newsletter twice this term in weeks 4 and 6 and will run it again next week. This information can also be accessed online if you go to the Kororo P. S. website.

ESL Students (English as a Second Language)

For some children at our school English is their second language. To support their learning we have a specialist teacher Mrs Tianne Albrow who works with all the ESL students in small groups, three to four times a week. Last week many of them came together to have a cooking lesson to make ANZAC cookies. The purpose was to engage them in oral language activities. As you can imagine it was a very exciting, successful lesson.

The Tell Them From Me student feedback survey This term, our school, like many others in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide our school with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. The survey is confidential and school staff will not be able to identify individual students from their responses. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 14 March and 8 April. A consent form has been sent home to all students in Years 4, 5 and 6. Please reply by Friday if you do not wish your child to participate.
