While we are on earth, an encounter with God is usually
overwhelming and frightful. We paint an image of a
loving God and begin to define Who God should
be. Because God is infinite and merciful, He requires us
to get real with Him. He loves us so much, but not on our
terms and not based on feelings. The Old Testament
paints an angry God, but the translations get it
wrong. God has a justified indignation for us, especially
we Catholics. He has provided us His Sacraments to both
forgive and heal us of the ravages of enslavement to
sin. Sin is a violation of an unforgiving Natural
Law. Adam and Eve, at one point in their lives, lived
sinless and were at peace with God and themselves. But
the devil, in his hatred for God, managed to appeal to
both of them to logically think they could be like God. Eve
was persuaded by the devil’s appeal to her pride. She
then seduced Adam to follow her. The world has never
been peaceful and happy since that incident because
their original sin fractured the world to this day.
Today’s Gospel passage emphasizes a very important
concept about our relationship to God. One must listen
as the first step to encounter God. Simon acts on Jesus’
Word by casting out his nets. It is reminiscent of the
Blessed Mother who hears the Word and conceives Jesus
through the power of the Holy Spirit. As Simon follows
Christ’s instruction, just as the servants at Cana, he
catches two boat loads of fish to the point of both boats
nearly sinking. The future Peter is the first of his
companions to trust Christ’s Word. The Apostles Peter,
James and John become the trio who are present at some
key moments of Christ’s ministry, the restoring to life
Jairus’ daughter and the Transfiguration.
When Peter sees his big catch, something pierces his
heart and he suddenly feels the pressure of his own
sinfulness, just like Isaiah when he is called by God. Now
Jesus directs Peter and his companions to catch men
alive, fulfilling Jeremiah’s prophecy (Jer 16:16) to go out
to the distant lands and bring back those who separated
themselves from God’s love. These disciples left
everything immediately to become part of the radical
nature of Christian discipleship.
After the Bishop’s Catholic School Week Mass last
Monday, we were all having a conversation about
vocations. The Bishop had mentioned that most
vocations come from the influence of a priest. I said to
him that was not the case for me. I did not tell him that
most of the priests that I met in my life were not that
inspirational. What I did say to him was that it really
came from prayer.
I kind of knew it since I was in fourth grade. It may have
been influenced by the Dominican sisters who taught me
in grammar school to pray and their Aquinian logic that
fits so well into my scientific future. What delayed me,
Pastor’s Notes however, was my observation of young men who left the
seminary bitter. They never told me why. The final
decision did come from prayer when I was about 28 years
of age. I was praying in the Lateran in Rome and I
received that certitude that God wanted me to quit the
scientific and political world and become a priest. I could
not apply to my own seminary, even though I was
teaching science in its minor seminary, because I had
contrary opinions based on Church teaching concerning
in vitro fertilization so I entered the Archdiocese of New
York’s seminary instead. Even though the well-known
moral theology professor disagreed with my politics, he
made me resign my re-election in absentia as vice-
president of the NYS Right to Life Party. I could live with
that because he did teach what turned out to be the
teaching of the Catholic faith. I did not have the
humiliating experiences of Isaiah or Peter in my
relationship with God and I am grateful for His gentleness
with me.
Today is World Marriage Day and I asked the deacons,
who prepare marriages, to preach about their vocations.
Fr. Euk
Colossians 1:9-10 - Therefore, from the day we heard
this, we do not cease praying for you and asking that you
may be filled with the knowledge of his will through all
spiritual wisdom and understanding to live in a manner
worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every
good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of
God.
We often don't realize the power of prayer, how
things can change and how the Lord can attend to our
needs, in accordance to His will for us. The most powerful
prayer is communal prayer. The power of a community
untied in prayer for the well being and love of others.
Truly putting emphasis on God's commandment to “ Love
One Another”. Through prayer we not only help each other
but we show our love for each other and for
God. Remember, no one is an entire chain, but we are
each a link. Take away the link and the chain becomes
weak or broken. No one is a whole team; we are each
players. Take away a player and the game can be lost. We
need each other, to help each other, to support each and
continue the Lord’s mission in a difficult world. Through
unceasing prayer, change will happen.
You all are a community of prayer warriors and when
we needed your prayers you came together and our Lord
heard you. We were overwhelmed with emotions to your
response and love. We felt the power of your prayer. He
answered your intercessory prayer for us, worthy to our
Lord and pleasing to Him fulfilling His desires and bearing
the fruits of your persistent prayer. Keep praying for each
other and the world. Thank you Lord and thank you all for
your loving prayers.
