Six design trends to heighten your home’s style(BPT) - Refresh and refocus. Taniya Nayak, interior designer, says the top trends will enhance and revive any home.

Be bold with shadowy and opu-lent tones; there are many ways to infuse a rich color scheme into your space. “Don’t be intimidated by dark hues,” says Nayak. “Incor-porate shades from the same color family throughout a room with a coordinating accent wall, rug and decorative pieces - such as pillows and blankets. This creates a bold, yet harmonizing visual.”

“The concept of a ‘pop’ of color is blown up this year,” adds Nayak.

“We’re seeing deep, rich hues adorning walls, lavishly upholstered furniture pieces, window treat-ments and area rugs. This year, we like to say ‘go bold or go home.’”

Create a room that’s uniquely yours by making a gallery wall with items of your choice. Display an array of mirrors, framed family photos, sketches or even postcards - the key is to be creative and be yourself.

Although neutrals provide a calm palette, it’s possible to infuse bold statements into these rooms, as well, with the use of patterns. Revi-talize your room with a geometric rug in an earth tone, and also add window treatments with a daring floral design in a complementary, yet understated, color. When mix-ing prints, pair structured, linear patterns with organic ones for a look that’s polished, and not too “matchy.”

The retro panache of mid-century modern decor will perk up rooms with its soft, sculptural lines, woven upholstery and bright accessories in geometric shapes. Search for vin-tage furniture pieces like rounded chairs and button-cushion couches with short, tapered legs to add a sense of authenticity.

“We are going retro mod - way back to the 60s where design was about curvy forms, vibrant colors and eccentric patterns,” Nayak says. “Be prepared to leave your design fears at the door and go full throttle with the bright and loud elements found in the mod movement. “

“It’s easy to bring nature and or-ganic structures into your home,” Nayak assures. “Leave linear styles out of the equation. Instead, think of free flowing shapes, colors found in nature and the peaceful serenity associated with the outdoors. The goal is to evoke the same emotional responses throughout your home.”

“Each year we see a particular met-al rise to the top of every designer’s list; and this year, it’s all about cop-per,” Nayak says.

Copper is a captivating metallic that adds a modern edge to even the simplest scheme. Small pieces make a big statement, so subtly pep-per in copper pieces to your decor, like light fixtures, planters or table settings. Display copper cookware in your kitchen - it’s a great way to add a touch of glamour without be-ing gaudy.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochestercelebrates 25 years of being a home away from home

This year marks Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Rochester’s 25th anniver-sary. The nonprofit celebrates this milestone as one of the leading nonprofit organizations in Western New York and strives to find, create and support programs that directly improve the health and well-being of critically ill children. RMHC provides a “home away from home” so family members can stay close to their loved ones during the most difficult of times. RMHC opened its doors 25 years ago, on February 18, 1990.

“Ronald McDonald House Charities of Roches-ter has served over 15,000 families since open-ing its doors 25 years ago,” said Carol DeMoulin, president of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Rochester. “As an organization that personally impacts the lives of so many family members here in our community, we strive to keep fami-lies together. No one ever expects their child, grandchild or loved one to become critically sick, but if this does happen to you and your family, we are here. We will be here to support families for as long as we’re needed.” Initiatives set for 2015, include:•a new Ronald McDonald House Family Room will open this summer inside the new tower at Golisano Children’s Hospital.•bedrooms for families at the Ronald McDonald House on Westmoreland Drive are currently be-ing completely renovated.•nearly $250,000 has been raised for RMHC through the Masonic fraternity’s Have-A-Heart fundraiser over the past 20 years. It is taking place now at area malls.•RMHC will celebrate the second annual Wear Your Stripes to Show You Care Day to observe the 41st anniversary of RMHC globally and 25th anniversary locally.

“Our houses are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” DeMoulin added. “Every RMHC volunteer makes a difference. Every dollar do-nated makes a difference. I can’t express how thankful we are for the giving, compassionate community we are part of and for how many RMHC ambassadors are out there supporting us.”

In celebration of the 25th anniversary, RMHC has a list of “25 Ways to Help Ronald McDonald House Charities This Year.” Five of those ways are:•Cook a meal at the house

•Volunteer at the RMHC Household Sale in the spring and/or fall•Attend the RMHC Red Tie Gala in March (March 28)•Young professionals - Join the RMHC young professionals committee, Red Tie Society•Wear red and white stripes in support of RMHC on October 15.
