Leading area muralist Rick Muto installed his creation “Portraits from our Past” during the Low Bridge High Water celebration in Brockport May 13. newsmakersNikole Van Wie, daughter of Mark and Tina Van

Wie, received the Suny Chancellor’s award for Student excellence at The College at brockport; the highest honor bestowed upon a student by Suny. This year 248 students from 64 college campuses received the award.

The Chancellor’s award for Student excellence rec-ognizes model students who have integrated academic excellence with other aspects of their lives including leadership, campus involvement, community service, arts, athletics and/or career achievement.

nikole is a senior majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry, dedicated to becoming an emergency medicine physician. She co-authored a publication in the Journal of Hospital pediatrics and presented this research at the midwest Society of pediatric research Conference in Cleveland, ohio.

nikole also conducts independent research in a Gi physiology lab at brockport and is a capstone student in the leadership development program, where she coor-dinated a Student leadership Conference involving over 300 students, faculty and alumni.

She is the president of the biology Honors program at the college and also serves as the assistant Head Coach of the brockport Junior eagles Gymnastics team. recently, nikole traveled to Sacramento, California to compete for the brockport women’s Club Gymnastics team at the naiGC national Championships.

nikole is a 2012 graduate of brockport High School.

Maison Fadale, a junior at brockport High School, participated in the uSHl (united States Hockey league) Combines in Chicago, illinois april 28 through may 1. 6,600 players applied and only 320 were invited.

maison previously played for four years in aaa Hockey in rochester. He was coached by former nHl player Jim wiemer. This past season, he played for the buffalo Jr. Sabres, coached by former buffalo Sabres Captain michael peca. maison was third on the team in goal scoring with 31.

maison will be playing with the buffalo Jr. Sabres 18u Team this upcoming season. He has also been invited to participate in the uSa Combines in Syracuse in may.

maison is the son of Jeremy and Sheri Fadale with sisters madelyn and ella. Grandparents are Gary and Candi lewis of barre and paul and mary Fadale of brockport.

Vincent Lin of rochester received the alfred l. and ruby C. davis leadership award Scholarship at roch-ester institute of Technology. lin is studying in the industrial design program.

The awards are given to nominated students who pos-sess high leadership qualities, help advance college life on campus or in the community, help to build bridges for their peers and, in some cases, overcome personal hard-ships.

Katelyn A. Daley of rochester has been selected for membership in Gamma Sigma alpha, the national aca-demic Greek Honor Society, at St. lawrence university.

daley is a member of the Class of 2016 majoring in psychology. She graduated from The aquinas institute.

To be a member in Gamma Sigma alpha, students must be a member of a St. lawrence fraternity or soror-ity, be a current junior or senior and have either a cumu-lative Gpa of 3.5 or higher or have achieved a semester Gpa of 3.5 or higher during their junior or senior year.

rochester institute of Technology’s College of liberal arts honored student achievement in writing with the presentation of the 2016 Henry and mary kearse distin-guished lecture and Student writing award Ceremony.

award winners included Kevin Kha of rochester, a second-year imaging science major representing the department of Science, Technology and Society, with “pollen essay.”

Shannon Smith of Spencerport won the Gilman international Scholarship for the summer term. This program aims to diversify study abroad participants and awards up to $5,000 for undergraduates. Smith also won a fellowship to study at the kanazawa institute of Tech-nology in Japan. The kiT Fellowship is a six-week pro-gram during which students attend cultural programs, field trips and lectures, and develop science projects. Smith, an american Sign language-english interpreta-tion student at the national Technical institute for the deaf, will study in Japan.

Kerri Patt of Spencerport has been named to the elmira College dean’s list for Term ii, winter 2016. Students who earn a 3.6 or greater Gpa for the academic term are recognized on the dean’s list for academic excel-lence.

Daria Burge of Hilton excelled during the fall 2015 semester, achieving a Gpa of at least 3.5 to earn a spot on the dean’s list at Hofstra university.

Christopher R. Martin, son of Jean M. Brooks of brockport, was inducted into the alpha Theta iota Chap-ter of phi Theta kappa at monroe Community College on Sunday, may 1. martin is majoring in public safety communications.

phi Theta kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college cam-puses in all 50 of the united States, Canada, Germany, the republic of palau, peru, the republic of the marshall islands, the Federated States of micronesia, the british Virgin islands, the united arab emirates and u.S. ter-ritorial possessions.

Emily Caboot of rochester, has completed Silver level requirements in the Suny oneonta’s leadership education and development (lead) program.

lead oneonta is a comprehensive leadership pro-gram based on current research and guidelines from the Council for the advancement of Standards in Higher education. all students can choose to participate in the lead program, which aims to better prepare them for life after college by providing a comprehensive picture of leadership and the skills needed to be a good leader.

There are three levels of leadership certification: Silver, Gold and platinum. To attain each level, students must meet a mix of programmatic and experiential leadership requirements, including attendance at edu-cational events, and membership and leadership in one or more of Suny oneonta’s 100+ student-run clubs and organizations.

Completion of a leadership level is recognized on campus as a credential that can be used, for example, when running for office or applying for STep (Student Travel for excellence program) funding. The program also provides students with a leadership record that can be submitted to potential employers.
