NÄR ORRMOAN STEG UR HAVET (THE KORSNÄS MOVIE)

Country: Finland Language: SwedishLength: 22’Completion date: 2010

Synopsis This is a film about how the school pupils from the beautiful town of Korsnäs ( it is situated about 50km south from Vaasa by the Finnish west coast) who make an exploratory voyage to Orrmoan, a culture heritage site in the area, which existed from the Iron Age, when Orrmoan was surrounded by water. One day the pupils visit the local museum where the museum-veteran Joel Lenlund tells them about the importance of seal-hunting in the earlier days. Behind the museum the pupils find a stone labyrinth and in it a magic stone that transports them through time to the sea shore and the old seal hunting-site which now, due to the land uplift, lies far from the shore deep in the forest. On Orrmoan, in one of the pits on the so called ”devil’s field”, a man from the Iron Age tells them the history of the island and how seals were hunted there. He also shows them how fire was lit in an age, when no matches existed. Once again with the aid of the magic stone, they return to the present at the stone labyrinth by the museum.

Backwater

Country: Armenia Language: English subtitlesLength: 10 minCompletion date: 2009

Synopsis

Human being pollutes the environment and doesn’t think of the awful consequences it will have on it. The villagers were using the river water for drinking and other domestic needs but later the once agile river turns into grey, sullen, rubbish pile. Children do not swim in the river with the same enthusiasm as before because of skin diseases in that area. By this story students of the SunChild Eco-club of Artashavan-Saghmosavan wished to show that all the particles of the nature are interchained and any missing ring will shatter the whole chain.

Gyumri: Two Stories

Country: Armenia Language: English subtitlesLength: 18 minCompletion date: 2009

Synopsis

Students of SunChild Eco-Club of Gyumri wish to make a film on the environmental issues of the highest importance in Gyumri, a beautiful town in Armenia. And which environmental issues are most urgent for Gyumri? Two are outlined in this film -the dirtiness of the city and issues of the Zoo. Many of Gyumri people escape conversations about the garbage in their city; some cannot be bothered at all about the situation in remote suburbs and some just throw the garbage into the river and walk away with clear conscience. And the Zoo where the animals are being treated in an inhumane way and very few of those living in Gyumri are aware of its existence and those who are, never go there. Here then comes a question: then for whom and why to torture animals?

The House, the River, the Mountain

Country: Armenia Language: English subtitlesLength: 13 minCompletion date: 2009

Synopsis

The film is about Haghartsin village, where because of mountain erosion many residents are left without shelter, the running sand and the stones have blocked the highway. The erosions affect rather adversely on people’s living and no one is able to stop that disaster which was caused by humans themselves. Some years ago “creative-thinking” people decided to build railway in the mountains, thus weakening the base of the mountain, provoking erosions, changing the flow of the river, ruining the nearby houses. The railway was never built till the end but the consequences of the half-done and spontaneous job are now obvious.

Synopsis

Vorotan gorge is one of the wonders of Syuniq region which is constantly exposed to destructive actions of human activities and once there will come a tragic day when this gorge will disappear at all. For thousands of years Vorotan was enjoying a peaceful, nonchalant life. No one was disturbing its tranquility and beauty. And suddenly a man, drawn by the greed of making money, begins to spoil the eco-system of Vorotan gorge. The river which has fed humans, watered its crops giving them life, turned into a miserable and dolorous rill. The lands surrounding the gorge became barren, the rumbling thunder of the gorge that was once accompanying the chirping of the birds muted, eternal vegetation of the gorge died out. The hero of the film is someone who is trying to save the gorge on edge, who is able to appreciate each and every particle of the nature, who feels pain for every dying plant and animal. One day people will realise that by ruining nature, they are ruining themselves.

The Sunset of Astragalus

Country: Armenia Language: English subtitlesLength: 7 minCompletion date: 2009

Synopsis

Astragalus, in Armenian Gaz, is a plant species recorded in Red Book of Armenia but Armenian rural area people, especially herdsmen and Yezidis burn those flowers and use their stalks as kindling wood for fire. The students of the “SunChild” Eco-Club of Urtsadzor decided to make a film trying to show that in Armenian mountains, in areas not reachable for everyone, grows a plant which is very beautiful, especially in its bloom it seems that the mountains are covered in violet sheet. It is a pity that by regularly burning it we eradicate a beauty like that which will ultimately result in the extinction of another rare plant in Armenia.

The Way of Water

Country: Armenia Language: English subtitlesLength: 20 minCompletion date: 2009

Synopsis

Gavaraget originates from Geghama Mountains, passes through Lanjaghbyur and Sarukhan communities, Gavar city, Noratus community and flows into Lake Sevan. Gavaraget is clean and pure in its springs; even the herdsman says that the water of this part of the river is drinkable but once we get to the very first village, we see a fully polluted and rubbish dumped river. The river gets even more polluted as we move further on. In this way, it’s collecting its “portion of garbage“ from each of the villages and delivers it into the Lake Sevan thus polluting the lake and the fauna. The pollution degree of the river testifies to the attitude of people towards natural treasures. The film features the transmission of a clean river into a dump–bin due to human apathy & indifference.
